Eight herbicide postemergence treatments were applied to proso millet (Panicum milaceum L.) at three growth stages. The dimethylamine salt of (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D) at 0.56 kg/ha had significantly higher grain yields than the weedy check. All herbicides except the amine of 2,4-D at 0.28 kg/ha appeared to injure proso millet plants by varying degrees; however, yields were not greatly affected. All herbicides gave excellent control of redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) when applied to proso millet in the 4 to 6-leaf stage. Weed control was poorer when spraying was delayed until proso millet was in pre-boot and post-flower stages.

Dalapon (2,2-dichloropropionic acid), tebuthiuron {N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N,N′-dimethylurea}, and hexazinone [3-cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione] were evaluated for smutgrass [Sporobolus poiretii (R.&S.) Hitchc] control in bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge.) pastures. Dalapon and hexazinone provided the best smutgrass control but injured the bahiagrass. Forage treated with hexazinone at 1.7 kg/ha or less recovered within 6 months; however, the effects of the initial injury from dalapon at 2.2 kg/ha could be detected for as long as 2 yr after treatment. Dogfennel [Eupatorium capillifolium (Lam.) Small] and broomsedge (Andropogon virginicus L.) replaced smutgrass and bahiagrass removed by dalapon. Higher rates of tebuthiuron than hexazinone (3.4 vs. 1.1 kg/ha) were required to control smutgrass adequately.

Several soil-applied and two foliar herbicides were evaluated for weed control in established alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in two experiments for two consecutive years. Most of the soil-applied herbicides effectively controlled weeds in the first harvest year following application; however, there was little carry-over into succeeding years. Except for the low rate of secbumeton [N-ethyl-6-methoxy-N′ (1-methylpropyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine] in the first alfalfa cutting of 1973, no herbicide treatment significantly increased alfalfa yields over the control plot. In fact, some herbicides caused injury to alfalfa at high rates of application, as did reapplication a second year at the original rate of application.

Atrazine has been the most widely used herbicide in North American processing sweet corn for decades; however, increased restrictions in recent years have reduced or eliminated atrazine use in certain production areas. The objective of this study was to identify the best stakeholder-derived weed management alternatives to atrazine in processing sweet corn. In field trials throughout the major production areas of processing sweet corn, including three states over 4 yr, 12 atrazine-free weed management treatments were compared to three standard atrazine-containing treatments and a weed-free check. Treatments varied with respect to herbicide mode of action, herbicide application timing, and interrow cultivation. All treatments included a PRE application of dimethenamid. No single weed species occurred across all sites; however, weeds observed in two or more sites included common lambsquarters, giant ragweed, morningglory species, velvetleaf, and wild-proso millet. Standard treatments containing both atrazine and mesotrione POST provided the most efficacious weed control among treatments and resulted in crop yields comparable to the weed-free check, thus demonstrating the value of atrazine in sweet corn production systems. Timely interrow cultivation in atrazine-free treatments did not consistently improve weed control. Only two atrazine-free treatments consistently resulted in weed control and crop yield comparable to standard treatments with atrazine POST: treatments with tembotrione POST either with or without interrow cultivation. Additional atrazine-free treatments with topramezone applied POST worked well in Oregon where small-seeded weed species were prevalent. This work demonstrates that certain atrazine-free weed management systems, based on input from the sweet corn growers and processors who would adopt this technology, are comparable in performance to standard atrazine-containing weed management systems.

Seeds of witchweed (Striga asiatica) were found in undisturbed Lakeland sand in all layers to 60 inches deep.

Simulated sprayer tank residues of the broadleaf weed herbicides dicamba, chlorsulfuron, and clopyralid applied alone and with the grass weed herbicides sethoxydim and diclofop on sunflower, tame mustard, and lentil, respectively, caused visible crop injury and reduced dry weight and yield. Dry weight production in the greenhouse and crop tolerance ratings in the field indicated that the grass weed herbicides enhanced crop injury from dicamba, chlorsulfuron, and clopyralid. Yield reductions in field experiments were also greater when dicamba and clopyralid were mixed with grass weed herbicides and applied on sunflower and lentil, respectively. This did not occur with chlorsulfuron applied to mustard. When mixed with simulated broadleaf weed herbicide residues, diclofop enhanced dry weight reductions and crop injury and reduced yield to a greater extent than sethoxydim. Crop tolerance ratings differentiated treatments and rates but were not a good estimate of the extent of yield loss. When broadleaf weed herbicides were applied at rates simulating sprayer tank residues alone or combined with grass weed herbicides, yield losses ranged up to 40% in sunflower, 70% in mustard, and 95% in lentil, compared to the untreated check.

The spring-tine harrow is gaining popularity for mechanical weeding. However, its weeding performance and mechanism have not been well understood. A spring-tine harrow was first tested in a controlled indoor soil bin at four different travel speeds (4, 6, 8, and 10 km h−1) with three different spring-loading settings (low, medium, and high). Then the harrow was tested in a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) field at the same spring-loading settings at three different weeding timings (early, middle, and late) in 2019 and 2020. Soil cutting forces (draft and vertical), soil displacements (forward and lateral), soil working depth, weed control efficacy, weed density, and crop damage were measured. The results showed that the spring-loading setting had a more dominant effect on working depth and soil cutting forces than the speed. The soil displacements were more dependent on the speed compared with the spring-loading setting. Treatment effects on weeding performance indicators in the field were similar across years. Adjusting the spring-loading setting from low to high improved the weeding efficacy from 44.9% to 73.9% in 2019 and from 51.6% to 78.1% in 2020. Consequently, the final weed density was minimized at the high loading setting, with the reduction in 2020 being significant. The middle weeding timing caused the least crop damage, while reducing the final weed density by approximately one-third compared with the control (without mechanical weeding), which was the most desired outcome among the three timings tested.

The inclusion of competitive crop cultivars in crop rotations is an important integrated weed management (IWM) tool. However, competitiveness is often not considered a priority for breeding or cultivar selection by growers. Field pea (Pisum sativum L.) is often considered a poor competitor with weeds, but it is not known whether competitiveness varies among semileafless cultivars. The objectives of this study were to determine if semileafless field pea cultivars vary in their ability to compete and/or withstand competition, as well as to identify aboveground trait(s) that may be associated with increased competitive ability. Field experiments were conducted in 2012 and 2013 at three locations in western Canada. Fourteen semileafless field pea cultivars were included in the study representing four different market classes. Cultivars were grown either in the presence or absence of model weeds (wheat and canola), and competitive ability of the cultivars was determined based on their ability to withstand competition (AWC) and their ability to compete (AC). Crop yield, weed biomass and weed fecundity varied among sites but not years. Cultivars exhibited inconsistent differences in competitive ability, although cv. Reward consistently exhibited the lowest AC and AWC. None of the traits measured in this study correlated highly with competitive ability. However, the highest-yielding cultivars generally were those that had the highest AC, whereas cultivars that ranked highest for AWC were associated with lower weed fecundity. Ranking the competitive ability of field pea cultivars could be an important IWM tool for growers and agronomists.

Organic crop production is often limited by the inability to control weeds. An 18-yr data set of weed cover in organic crop rotations at the long-term Farming Systems Project at Beltsville, MD, was analyzed to identify meteorological and management factors influencing weed abundance. A path analysis using structural equation models was employed to distinguish between the direct effect of factors on weed cover and the indirect effect on weed cover through effects on crop competitiveness. Grain yield of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] served as a surrogate for crop competitiveness and was found to be the most important factor influencing weed cover. Precipitation during late vegetative and early reproductive crop growth had a strong positive effect on crop yield, and thereby a negative indirect effect on weed cover, but this effect was partially offset by a positive direct effect on weed cover. Delayed crop planting date and crop rotational diversification including crops other than summer row crops had a moderate negative effect on weed cover, while having minimal effect on crop performance. Rotary hoeing also had a direct negative effect on weed cover, but a corresponding negative effect on crop performance resulted in a diminished total effect on weeds. Results demonstrate the complex interactions that define the relative abundance of weeds faced by organic growers, but, generally, factors that enhanced crop competitiveness provided the most effective weed management.

Waterhemp [Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) Sauer] is one of the most troublesome agronomic weeds in the midwestern United States. The rapid evolution and selection of herbicide-resistance traits in A. tuberculatus is a major challenge in managing this species. An A. tuberculatus population, designated CHR, was identified in 2012 in Champaign County, IL, and previously characterized as resistant to herbicides from six site-of-action groups: 2,4-D (Group 4), acetolactate synthase inhibitors (Group 2), protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibitors (Group 14), 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase inhibitors (Group 27), photosystem II inhibitors (Group 5), and very-long-chain fatty-acid synthesis inhibitors (Group 15). Recently, ineffective control of CHR was observed in the field after dicamba application. Therefore, this research was initiated to confirm dicamba resistance, quantify the resistance level, and investigate its inheritance in CHR. Multiple field trials were conducted at the CHR location to confirm poor control with dicamba and compare dicamba treatments with other herbicides. Greenhouse trials were conducted to quantify the resistance level in CHR and confirm genetic inheritance of the resistance. In field trials, dicamba did not provide more than 65% control, while glyphosate and glufosinate provided at least 90% control. Multiple accessions were generated from controlled crosses and evaluated in greenhouse trials. Greenhouse dicamba dose–response experiments indicated a resistance level of 5- to 10-fold relative to a sensitive parental line. Dose–response experiments using F1 lines indicated that dicamba resistance was an incompletely dominant trait. Segregation analysis with F2 and backcross populations indicated that dicamba resistance had moderate heritability and was potentially a multigenic trait. Although dicamba resistance was predominantly inherited as a nuclear trait, minor maternal inheritance was not completely ruled out. To our knowledge, CHR is one of the first cases of dicamba resistance in A. tuberculatus. Further studies will focus on elucidating the genes involved in dicamba resistance.

Mathematical growth analysis techniques were used to study the effects of simulated field temperatures and chilling events on the growth of the exotic noxious weed itchgrass (Rottboellia exaltata L. f.) and adapted varieties of corn (Zea mays L. ‘DeKalb XL43’ and ‘DeKalb XL395′), and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Corsoy’, ‘Williams', and ‘Tracy’] in climate-controlled greenhouses and growth chambers. Itchgrass grew vigorously and produced seed in temperature regimes simulating the warmest 4 months of the growing season in the Gulf Coast states (30/25 C, day/night), the central Midwest (27/21 C), and the northern Midwest (23/18 C). At 30/25 C day/night, itchgrass produced 707 g of dry matter and 1907 seed per plant after 119 days. Itchgrass produced 621 g dry matter and 1429 seed at 27/21 C and 499 g dry matter and 1160 seed at 23/18 C. Itchgrass and adapted varieties of corn and/or soybeans were grown in four additional temperature regimes simulating the first 5 weeks of the growing seasons for corn and soybean at Madison, Wisconsin (19/11 C day/night); for soybean at Carbondale, Illinois (24/20 C); for corn at Waycross, Georgia (20/14 C); and for soybean at Baton Rouge, Louisiana (27/23 C). After 24 days of growth, half the plants in each regime were exposed to 3 days of chilling (11/4 C for Madison, 17/10 C for Carbondale, 15/6 C for Waycross, and 24/18 C for Baton Rouge) and returned to the original growth regimes for recovery. The chilling treatments reduced dry matter production, net assimilation rate, and leaf area duration more in itchgrass than in corn or soybean. After recovery, the previously chilled itchgrass plants had greater reductions in height, leaf area, and dry weight, compared to unchilled controls, than did corn or soybean. Weed/crop ratios in height, leaf area, and dry weight for itchgrass/corn were significantly reduced by chilling. In the two cooler regimes, weed/crop ratios in leaf area and dry weight for itchgrass/soybean were significantly reduced by chilling. Because of its sensitivity to cool temperatures, itchgrass, is unlikely to be an important early-season competitor with corn or with soybean outside the South.

Six species of Solanaceae including tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill ‘Campbell 28′) were sprayed in the greenhouse at weekly intervals for 4 weeks starting when tomato plants had one true leaf. All species gained tolerance to metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazine-5(4H)one] with age but tomato and black nightshade (Solarium nigrum L.) were the most tolerant and gained tolerance fastest with age. Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium L.) and eggplant (Solanum melongena L. ‘Black Beauty’) were the most susceptible species and the ones that gained least tolerance with age. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) from true seeds and pepper (Capsicum annuum L. ‘Yolo wonder’) were intermediate in tolerance. In the field, tomato and nine weed species planted in separate plots and kept free from competition were sprayed at weekly intervals starting when tomato plants had one true leaf. Tomato, large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinales (L.) Scop.), ivyleaf morningglory (Ipomoea hederaceae (L.) Jacq.) and yellow foxtail (Setaria glauca (L.) Beauv.) were the most resistant species to metribuzin and the ones that gained tolerance fastest with age. The most susceptible weeds were velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic), common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.), pale smartweed (Polygonum lapathifolium L.), redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), and jimsonweed. Low amounts of sunlight during the 3 days before spraying greatly reduced the resistance of tomato to metribuzin.

Twelve-day-old corn seedlings (Zea mays L. ‘Funk's G-83’) were exposed to thermal conditions (482 C for 125 msec) approximating those used for flame weed control. Tissue dehydration was evident within 1 min after flame application. One hour after flame exposure, the water content of shoot tissues was 6% less than in nonflamed shoots. Transpirational water loss 16 hr after flame application was reduced by 68% when compared to that of nonflamed seedlings. Assimilation of 14CO2 by flamed seedlings, while substantially decreased when compared with that of nonflamed seedlings, continued on a limited basis even in the most severely injured leaf tips.

Genome sequencing of many model systems, including the human, yeast, Arabidopsis, and rice genomes, has been completed. As a complement to genomic techniques, proteomics has emerged to study the composition, structure, function, and interaction of the expressed proteins or proteome in a given cell, tissue, or organism. During the past several years, tremendous progress has been made with proteomic techniques in human and yeast, but progress has been slower in plants due to several factors. Proteomic techniques have been used in plants, especially in agriculturally important crops and weeds, to understand mechanisms of herbicide tolerance and weed resistance. Proteomic techniques, starting from protein extraction to protein identification, have been developed and advanced for large-scale proteomics studies, but limitations and problems for these techniques still exist for plant proteomics. Further technological improvements are needed to enhance quantitative and comparative large-scale proteomics studies. Applications of these techniques may help weed scientists to understand stress tolerance in crops and investigate weediness traits further. Proteomic techniques have unique strengths but also offer several challenges. Together with transcriptomics and metabolomics, these techniques for analyzing global patterns of gene expression offer new and novel techniques for better understanding biological questions of interest to weed scientists in the future.

Sheep sorrel is an invasive, creeping perennial weed of lowbush blueberry fields that decreases yields and hinders harvest. Much of the basic phenology of sheep sorrel in blueberry fields is unknown and not documented in peer-reviewed journals. Three levels of fertilizer (0, 20, and 40 kg N ha−1) and two levels of hexazinone (0 and 1.92 kg ai ha−1) were applied to three vegetative-year blueberry fields to determine their effects on root and shoot growth, biomass allocation, and seed production of sheep sorrel plants. Hexazinone efficacy varied widely between sites, but suppressed shoot biomass, achene number and weight, and reproductive biomass, as well as the reproductive : shoot biomass ratio. Fertilizer tended to increase achene number and increased sheep sorrel shoot biomass in the absence of hexazinone, but had no effect on achene weight, root biomass, or reproductive biomass. When fertilizer was applied, sheep sorrel allocated resources to sexual reproduction at the expense of vegetative growth.

Invasive species such as Canada thistle pose a significant threat to ecosystems. The risk of introducing invasive species has increased with human activities, and the effects of such events have economic and aesthetic impacts. Native to Europe, Canada thistle is now established throughout temperate North America. Although there is documentation of early occurrences to North America, little is known on how it has become established in diverse habitats or how it continues to spread. We examined genetic diversity within and among nearly 1,700 Canada thistle individuals from 85 North American locations with the use of seven microsatellite markers in order to address these questions. PAUP and STRUCTURE programs were used to assess genetic diversity and relationships within and between populations. Populations exhibited greater within-population diversity (> 60%) than expected for a reported clonally reproducing species. Total diversity of sampled locations in North America (0.183) was less than previously reported for European locations (0.715), but the greater mean difference between North American populations (0.264 relative to 0.246 from England) suggests strong founder effects or restriction of gene flow influencing individual populations. Furthermore, analyses identified numerous instances where individuals from geographically distant regions clustered together, indicating long-distance translocation of propogules. However, isolation by distance analysis showed significant correlation between location and population genetic distances (r = 0.1917, P = 0.006). Within populations, nearly 92% of individuals sampled harbored unique multilocus genotypes, strongly suggesting that sexual reproduction is common. Within populations, analysis of genetic structure indicated significant admixture of genotypes throughout the invasive range in North America. The recurrent distribution of seed throughout North America has led to a highly diverse gene pool and increased the adaptive success Canada thistle to a wide variety of habitats. Future technologies developed for control of Canada thistle should consider this diversity.

Experiments were conducted at two sites for 2 yr in the Pacific Northwest dryland cropping region to determine if seeding rate of small-red lentil could enhance weed control with herbicides and increase lentil seed yield. At Pendleton, OR, and LaCrosse, WA, lentil was planted at 22 or 44 kg ha−1 in one direction in all plots. In one-half of the plots, lentil was cross-seeded at right angles with an additional 22 kg ha−1 to provide seeding rates of 22, 44, 22 + 22, and 44 + 22 kg ha−1. Seeding rate main plots were split into three herbicide treatments and an untreated control. Total weed density was reduced by increasing seeding rate at Pendleton both years when averaged over all herbicide treatments. Seeding rate reduced total weed density to a greater extent when herbicides did not adequately control weeds or when herbicides were not applied at Pendleton in 1992. Increased seeding rate also reduced total weed dry weight at Pendleton in 1992 and 1993 and at LaCrosse in 1993. The suppressive effect of increased seeding rate on weed dry weight was more evident when herbicides were not used or when herbicides gave only partial control. Herbicides generally reduced weed density, but the effectiveness of individual treatments was related to the weed species present and environmental conditions present in each experiment. Lentil aboveground dry weight production increased with seeding rate at both locations; however, only in 1 yr did lentil seed yield increase with seeding rate. The primary benefit from increased seeding rate in this study was to reduce weed density and dry weight.

Four field experiments were conducted to measure the effects of seven Ipomoea hederacea (L.) Jacq. densities on Gossypium hirsutum L. lint yield, stripper-harvest efficiency, and fiber properties. The seven densities were 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeds 10 m−1 of row. Data were used to develop prediction models to compare with those previously constructed that used fewer experiments and fewer weed densities in this range. Gossypium hirsutum lint yield in kilograms per hectare and as a percentage of the weed-free control best fit a linear regression model. Gossypium hirsutum lint yield reductions for each increase of one weed 10 m−1 of row ranged from 30.7 to 36.2 kg ha−1 at Chickasha and from 35.4 to 36.4 kg ha−1 at Perkins. Lint yield reductions for each weed 10 m−1 of row ranged from 3.8 to 6.9% at Chickasha and from 3.9 to 6.0% at Perkins. All plots could be mechanically stripper harvested, except for the 12-weed density at Chickasha in 1994 and the 10- and 12-weed densities at Perkins in 1996. Harvest efficiencies were not significantly different in any experiment. The only fiber properties to display significant differences were micronaire and strength at Chickasha in 1994. Prediction models calculated herein were highly similar to those previously constructed.

Field and greenhouse research was conducted to quantify the level of resistance to atrazine in Wisconsin (WRB1) and Maryland (MRB) velvetleaf biotypes and to determine cross-resistance of the WRB1 and MRB biotypes to other selected herbicides as compared to a Wisconsin atrazine-susceptible velvetleaf accession (WSA1). In field studies, the WRB1 and MRB biotypes survived atrazine applied POST at dosages as high as 4.5 kg ha−1. In contrast, the WSA1 accession had 50% survival following a 1.1 kg ha−1 POST atrazine application. The WRB1 biotype demonstrated neither cross-resistance nor negative cross-resistance to alachlor, bentazon, bromoxynil, cyanazine, dicamba, linuron, metribuzin, or thifensulfuron. The MRB biotype demonstrated neither cross-resistance nor negative cross-resistance to alachlor, bentazon, dicamba, metribuzin, or thifensulfuron; slight negative cross-resistance was demonstrated to bromoxynil, cyanazine, and linuron. In greenhouse studies, the WRB1 and MRB biotypes were approximately 100-fold more resistant to atrazine than the WSA1 accession; the WRB1 and MRB biotypes demonstrated neither cross-resistance nor negative cross-resistance to alachlor, ametryn, bentazon, bromoxynil, cyanazine, dicamba, linuron, metribuzin, pendimethalin, terbacil, or thifensulfuron. Absence of cross-resistance to cyanazine, ametryn, metribuzin, and terbacil in the WRB1 and MRB biotypes of velvetleaf is in contrast to most other atrazine-resistant weed biotypes.

Application of 2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine (atrazine) to intermediate wheatgrass (Agropyron intermedium (Host) Beauv.) increased forage yields, plant protein, and nitrate over a 4-year period. Atrazine or 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine) applied to a sward of red brome (Bromus rubens L.), Arabian grass (Schismus arabicus Nees.), and red-stem filaree (Erodium cicutarium (L.) L'Her.) increased dry-matter yields sixfold and also increased protein and nitrate nitrogen. Nitrate in plants treated with atrazine increased to near-toxic levels for livestock.
