Si la publication 99 de la CIPR et le BEIR VII recommandent de maintenir l’usage d’une relation linéaire sans seuil (RLSS) pour estimer l’excès de risque relatif de cancer lié à de faibles doses de rayonnements ionisants (RI), le rapport conjoint de l’Académie des sciences et de l’Académie de médecine (2005) conclut qu’elle conduit à une forte surestimation des risques des faibles et des très faibles doses. Les fondements de la RLSS sont remis en question par de nouvelles données biologiques et de l’expérimentation animale qui montrent que la défense contre les RI met en jeu le micro-environnement cellulaire et le système immunitaire, et que les mécanismes de défense contre les faibles doses de RI sont différents et plus efficaces. Ces cellules lésées par une irradiation à faible dose sont éliminées ; la réparation s’impose à forte dose pour préserver les fonctions tissulaires. Les organismes pluricellulaires réalisent ainsi une défense au moindre coût et au moindre risque contre les RI et les dégâts du métabolisme oxydatif. Les différences entre les défenses contre les faibles et fortes doses sont particulièrement nettes dans le cas de contamination par des émetteurs alpha qui montrent chez l’homme et l’animal des effets à seuil de plusieurs grays. Ces différences remettent en question les résultats des études épidémiologiques qui, pour des raisons de puissance statistique, estiment les risques en fusionnant des données obtenues pour des gammes de doses très étendues, ce qui sous entend implicitement que les mécanismes de cancérogenèse sont similaires quelle que soit la dose. L’estimation des risques des faibles doses de RI doit reposer sur des études spécifiquement limitées aux faibles doses, avec une évaluation précise de facteurs de confusion potentiels. La synthèse des études de cohorte pour lesquelles on dispose des coefficients de risque fondés sur les seules doses inférieures à 100 mSv chez l’adulte ne montre pas d’excès de risque relatif significatif, ni pour les tumeurs solides ni pour les leucémies.

CT scanning technology is a valuable tool to diagnose many diseases; however, the levelof the radiation dose is a source of concern, especially for children. CT scan systems anddose measurement methods have evolved over the years; but reported pediatric effectivedoses (EDs) have sometimes exceeded the annual dose limit recommended by the ICRP (1 mSvper year for persons under 18 years) (ICRP, 2007a).Efforts have been made to reduce organ doses and EDs by adjusting the scan parameters.This paper describes the determinants of the ED, and the dose reduction techniques inpediatric imaging from the early age of CT examinations until now. The firstepidemiological results regarding the associated risk of cancer are also brieflypresented.

Une véritable révolution technologique a, au cours des 5 dernières années, profondément modifié le périmètre d’application et les perspectives de la médecine nucléaire, en particulier de la cancérologie nucléaire. Dans le cadre des applications diagnostiques, la tomographie par émission de positons (TEP) avec le 18F-fluoro déoxyglucose (FDG) a eu un impact déterminant sur la stratégie diagnostique des oncologues en ajoutant des informations fonctionnelles très précieuses aux informations morphologiques de l’imagerie conventionnelle. De nombreux autres traceurs fluorés, en cours d’évaluation clinique, sont destinés à étudier des fonctions tumorales diverses (prolifération tumorale, hypoxie, apoptose chimioinduite, etc.) pouvant avoir des répercussions thérapeutiques importantes. D’autres émetteurs de positons seront disponibles à terme, comme le 64Cu (période de 12 heures), le 124I (période de 4,1 jours) et le 86Y (période de 15 heures) dans des indications comme l’immuno-TEP ou la dosimétrie pré-thérapeutique qui ne peuvent être développées avec le 18F du fait de sa période trop courte. Dans le cadre des applications thérapeutiques, la radiothérapie interne, longtemps limitée au cancer thyroïdien différencié, s’est étendue à beaucoup d’autres types de cancers du fait de la disponibilité de nouveaux vecteurs de radionucléides comme les anticorps monoclonaux (radioimmunothérapie) ou des peptides (radiopeptide-thérapie), de nouvelles méthodes de ciblage tumoral et de nouveaux radionucléides, en particulier des émetteurs de particules alpha (alpha-thérapie). Toutes ces évolutions technologiques ont bien sûr une implication en radioprotection en ce qui concerne l’exposition du personnel de médecine nucléaire, de l’entourage familial proche et plus généralement de l’environnement. Actuellement l’essentiel des dispositions règlementaires s’applique au 99mTc pour les applications diagnostiques et au 131I en thérapie, elles ont été étendues en 2001 au 18F dans le cadre des contraintes de radioprotection liées à l’utilisation de FDG. Concernant l’exposition de l’entourage proche du malade, la règlementation est actuellement limitée au seuil d’activité de 740 MBq de 131I qui impose un confinement hospitalier du malade. Une indication indirecte de cette exposition peut être donnée par le débit d’exposition (en µSv/h) à 1 mètre pour une source de 1 MBq. Si on prend en compte la valeur du débit et la période physique, il apparaît, qu’à activité identique, le 52Fe, le 86Y et le 124I sont des radionucléides émetteurs de positons qui présentent un débit élevé à la sortie du service et pendant les heures qui suivent l’injection. Concernant l’exposition de l’environnement, la règlementation actuelle impose une concentration radioactive, à l’émissaire de l’établissement, de 1000 Bq/L pour le 99mTc et de 100 Bq/L pour le 131I. Pour les nouveaux radionucléides, d’autres hypothèses que celle d’une concentration permanente de 100 Bq/L doivent être retenues et des études d’impact, similaires à celles pratiquées dans le domaine du nucléaire devraient être effectuées.

Indoor radon surveys were carried out in some of the Arabcountries through a Coordination Research Program (CRP) organizedby the Arab Atomic Energy Agency (AAEA). The objectives of the programaim at establishing a database on indoor radon concentration levelsin the region and investigating any anomalies, where they exist.The approach adopted by the survey teams to achieve public participationin accepting the radon detectors in dwellings is presented and discussed.Most of the participants in the CRP used the passive method (CR-39plastic detectors) for long-term radon measurements, while othersused charcoal detectors and E-Perm systems for short-term measurements.The results of the surveys showed that radon concentration levelsin most of the dwellings were low, whilst in some old cities andin an area close to a phosphate mine the levels were found to berelatively high.

Continental aquifers flow along topographic gradients toward coastlines in many geologic environments. Wherever aquifers intersect coastlines, ground water mixes with seawater infiltrated in marine sediments. In this mixing zone, sediment-pore fluid interactions create geochemical gradients that migrate back and forth on short (e.g., tides, waves) and long time scales (e.g. seasonal and eustatic sea level fluctuations). We focus on sorption and ion exchange characteristics of radium in these mixing zone sediments using laboratory column experiments. Previous studies have shown salinity affects radium sorption, but this process has not been investigated in porous sediments where solution ionic strength may fluctuate over a range of time scales. Additionally, different sediment types present within this subsurface zone may act as temporally and spatially variable source/sink sites for Ra. These sediments may have been underestimated in Ra mass balances for estimating coastal ground water fluxes. We performed microcosm sediment column experiments to examine Ra behavior and quantify the source/sink capacity of sediments. Longitudinal dispersivity results indicate local flow field variability was minimal during experiments. Radium desorption from sediments occurs rapidly (within 60 to 120 minutes) with exposure to solution and is generally high in the shallow portion of the subterranean mixing zone.

The European Model for Inhabited Areas (ERMIN) was developed to explore recovery optionsfollowing the contamination of an urban environment with radioactive material. This paperdiscusses the user experience of ERMIN and in particular it concentrates on thedevelopment of a description of the urban environment and how that description affects theoutput. The user interacts with ERMIN by defining different regions on a map. A region maybe an area in which a particular combination of recovery countermeasures is applied, orwhere a particular level of contamination is found, or where there is a particular type ofurban environment. Most of the output from ERMIN is also presented as maps with summaryinformation that allows the user to compare different countermeasure strategies. ERMIN hasbeen implemented within two international nuclear accident Decision Support Systems; RODOSand ARGOS. Both systems have user interfaces that exploit geographic information system(GIS) technology which complement the ERMIN map based approach.

Dans le cadre de ses missions d'expertise pour la protection de l'homme contre les rayonnements ionisants, l'IPSN a pour objectif de dresser un bilan des accidents d'origine radiologique survenus dans le monde ayant causé des effets déterministes afin d'en tirer les enseignements et d'établir un retour d'expérience. Une base documentaire informatique “ ACCIRAD ” de ces événements est établie en reprenant des données acquises à l'IPSN au cours de ses propres expertises, mais également des informations issues d'un travail de recherche bibliographique. Un recensement sous forme de tableau résumé est présenté dans cet article et une synthèse permettant d'établir un certain nombre de faits marquants a été réalisée. Dans un second temps, une consultation via Internet sera envisagée pour rendre accessible la base de données “ ACCIRAD ” au public intéressé.

17 ans après l'accident de Tchernobyl, cette étude propose une reconstitution des dépôts de 137Cs dus à cet accident sur l'ensemble du territoire français métropolitain. Cette reconstitution est basée sur la relation entre les dépôts de 137Cs et les pluies de la première semaine de mai 1986, validée sur le tiers-est du pays, et sur une modélisation de l'appauvrissement d'est en ouest des masses d'air contaminées. La carte proposée, établie suivant la même méthode géostatistique que celle utilisée par la Commission européenne, est cohérente avec les estimations des dépôts de 137Cs dans les pays d'Europe voisins.

Current studies within the field of Environmental Risk Assessments associated with the presence of radionuclides in ecosystems tend to implement the usual approach developed for chemicals, that includes four steps: (1) pollutant inventory in the sources of exposure, (2) effect analysis, (3) exposure analysis and (4) risk calculation. In the case of ionising radiation, the third stage involves radiological dose calculation. For humans, this kind of calculation is internationally codified by the ICRP, that provides both models and associated dose coefficients. For non-human biota, this task is a new field of investigations and no international consensus exists at the present time. We thus propose a computer tool to evaluate the dose rate at which the energy produced by ionising radiations is deposited in representative organisms of non-human biota. This energy depends on several parameters, describing the geometry of the relative position of the ionising source and the target, in association with the main properties of the latter. Concerning the source, the radiation type (alpha, beta or gamma) should be taken into account as well as the energy emissions of the concerned nuclides. The target-organism is described by its geometry (assimilated to an ellipsoid characterised by its three axes), its chemical composition and its lifestyle (exposure pathways, dietary habits, behaviour). E.D.E.N. (Elementary Dose Evaluation for Natural environment) is the operational code that we are developing to evaluate the Dose Per Unit of Concentration (expressed in Gy.time-1 / Bq.mass-1 or Bq.volume-1) due to internal and external exposures of any non-human organism to any radionuclide. A user-friendly interface is provided to build the exposure scenario of interest, characterising the target and the sources involved. Several cases are presented to illustrate the possibilities of E.D.E.N.

Les accidents causés par les rayonnements ionisants sont rares et possèdent leur propre spécificité. Ils ont des effets indirects, particulièrement importants dans les accidents de grande ampleur. La gamme des accidents est large et variée : il existe des accidents qui ne posent pas de problèmes particuliers, des accidents dont la gestion médicale est délicate et des accidents qui mobilisent des moyens très importants. Dans chacune de ces classes on peut distinguer les accidents qui sont diagnostiqués d'emblée et ceux qui sont découverts tardivement et qui auraient pu être ignorés. Certains accidents sont gardés secrets pour des raisons militaires ou politiques. Cette classification permet de tirer un enseignement général, qui devrait contribuer à la prévention et à la gestion des situations accidentelles, tant en ce qui concerne la sûreté que le domaine médical.

In order to study the vertical migration of anthropogenic 137Cs, soil inventories ofthis radionuclide were measured in two regions selected on the basisof a previous comprehensive survey in the northern Iranian provinceof Guilan located in the South Caspian region. Ten sampling stations were randomly chosen in these regions and split-level samplingwas carried out to a depth of 30 cm. Sample analysis was performedusing a HPGe detector system. In situ gamma measurementsin both regions were als o carried out with the aid of a portable germanium spectrometer.The experimental data were then compared with the solution of theconvection-dispersion equation (CDE) with the proper initial and boundary conditions to evaluate initialdeposition as well as transport parameter values. The solution,including the effects of both considered sources, i.e. global falloutand Chernobyl releases, fits the measured data well. The effectiveconvection velocity and dispersion coefficients of 137Cslie in the range of 0-0.25 cm·y-1 and 0.32-0.75 cm2·y-1, respectively, indicating a very slow migration rate in the area. Most of the deposited 137Cs still remainedin the top 10-cm layer. Moreover, the fitted depth profiles werethen employed to correct the surface activities of 137Csestimated by in situ measurements.

In nuclear and radiological emergency and post-accident management decisions oncountermeasures and remediation strategies have to be made. Whereas in the early phasedecisions on emergency actions must be made in a very short time, according to emergencyplans and dose thresholds, in the recovery phase complexity is higher. But there is alsomore time for evaluating alternative countermeasures and remediation strategies withrespect to several goals. In this paper evaluation strategies supporting the decisionmakers throughout all phases are presented. The applied decision support techniques rangefrom graphical presentations of decision relevant information about the alternatives foraction to multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods. In particular methods to copewith several types of uncertainties inherent in the different phases are presented. By theintegration of these techniques, the decision support system RODOS is able to providesupport for more conscious, transparent and coherent decision making.

Model intercomparison exercises have identified radionuclide transfer predictions as the greatest source of uncertainty in biota dose assessments. One wildlife group for which few transfer data exist is reptiles, Given that reptiles are an important, and often protected, component of many ecosystems and that assessments of radiation impact on ecosystems are becoming increasingly necessary due to the current nuclear renaissance, there is a need to further develop our current database on transfer to reptiles or find alternative approaches to estimate reptile transfer parameters. Three approaches that have the potential to increase the availability of parameters to predict radionuclide transfer to reptiles are the use of non-lethal sampling techniques, phylogenetic relationships and allometric relationships. Non-lethal sampling is an attractive long term option for deriving transfer parameters, but the derivation of phylogenetic and allometric relationships could provide ways of predicting transfer in the interim.

People in France drink commonly mineral spring waters from those regions where concentrations of natural radionuclides are high. Using the recently updated age dependent dose coefficientsrecommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection, (Publications 56, 67, 69, and 72), it is shown that the largely consumed natural waters can be separated into twocategories: non gaseous waters for which a constant exclusive consumption would result into an annual committed effective dose around than 0.03 mSv; and the saline and gaseous ones forwhich, in same conditions, the dose would be 10 to 40 times higher. For the infant, the diet of whom is often including largely the first category, the annual effective dose committed over 70 yearsof lifetime would be around than 0.3 mSv.

Ingestion of radionuclides through food intake accounts for a substantial part ofradiation doses and vegetables constitute essential components of the diet, bycontributing protein, vitamins, iron, calcium and other nutrients. Radionuclides can beapprehended in the ecosystem of the East Singhbhum region which is known for its viablegrades of uranium. In the present study, vegetables were collected from the villagesaround the proposed Bagjata mining area and analysed for U(nat), 226Ra,230Th and 210Po. The geometric mean concentration of U(nat),226Ra, 230Th, and 210Po were 0.05, 0.09, 0.17 and 1.12Bq kg-1 fresh weight, respectively. The intake of the radionuclides fromvegetables was found to be 49.58 Bq y-1while the ingestion dose was calculatedto be 11.51 µSv y-1, respectively. The estimated doses are reflecting thenatural background dose via the route of ingestion, which is much belowthe 1 mSv limit set in the new ICRP recommendations. It is lower than the global averageannual radiation dose of 2 400 µSv to man from the natural radiation sources as proposedby UNSCEAR. The total cancer risk due to the consumption of vegetables was calculated tobe 6.65 × 10-9 which is negligible and much lower than the threshold risk valueof 10-6. The study also reveals that water is more conducive forhigh radioactivity occurrence in vegetables compared to soil systems.

The radionuclide contamination of fishes from the Glubokoye and Dalekoye-1 Lakes (left-bank flood lands of the Pripyat River), Azbuchyn Lake and Yanovsky Crawl (right-bank flood lands of the Pripyat River), Pripyat River (near by Chernobyl town) and the main area of the Kyiv reservoir on a modern stage are explored and analyzed. The percentage of 90Sr is shown in organs and fabrics of different fishes by the state on 2005–2007.

The reported work aimed at modeling process of radionuclide migration from the near-surface waste burial (trench no.22) containing nuclear fuel particles to the unsaturated zone and aquifer. The developed global model of the waste site accounts for dissolution of reactor fuel particles, vertical radionuclide transport in the unsaturated zone, and horizontal transport in the underlying aquifer by advection-dispersion mechanisms. It is based on the following sub-models: the geostatistical model for radioactivity distribution in trench; the radionuclide source term model describing dissolution of fuel particles, radionuclide redistribution in the trench body and unsaturated zone (STERM1D) and the two- and three-dimensional contaminant transport in the aquifer (MODFLOW - MT3D). Modeling work included sensitivity analyses, calibrations and eventually validation tests for the global model by means of comparison of model predictions to experimental data. In addition, a preliminary step by step validation process was applied to “elementary" sub-models. The developed modeling methodology is mostly suited for producing spatially averaged parameter values (such as radionuclide concentrations in trench porous solution, integral radionuclide release to aquifer) and is applicable for long-term predictions on a scale of decades assuming that hydrological and geochemical conditions remain steady state.

Although great efforts had been made to improve the physical phantoms used for calibrating in vivo measurement systems, for technical reasons they can only provide a rough representation of humantissue.Substantial corrections must therefore be made to calibration factors obtained with suchcalibration phantoms for extrapolation to a given individual. These corrections are particularly crucialand delicate in low-energy in vivo measurement when absorption in tissue is significant. To improvecalibration for such special conditions, the possibility has been raised of using voxelised numericalphantoms associated with Monte Carlo computing techniques. In the method described below, a mathematicalphantom, consisting of a voxelised representation derived from scanner images is used, with aspecially-designed interface making it possible to not only reconstruct widely-differing contaminationconfigurations and specify associated tissue compositions, but also automatically create an MCNP4b inputfile. After validation of the different sources and geometries, the complete procedure of reconstructionof the phantom and simulation of 241Am lung measurement was carried out using a tissue equivalentcalibration phantom of the type commonly used for lung calibration for actinides. The purpose of this workwas to extend the use of this principle to the reconstruction of numerical phantoms on the basis ofphysiological data of individuals obtained from magnetic resonance and scanner images. The resultsobtained and the current limitations of this approach in the context are discussed.

Les techniques de spectroscopie laser sont de plus en plus employées pour l'analyse élémentaire à bas niveau et la spéciation des actinides et autres radionucléidesd'intérêt. A partir d'une recherche bibliographique et des expériences développées au sein du Laboratoire de spectroscopie laser analytique, le principe,les performances, les applications ainsi que les avantages et les inconvénients de ces différentes techniques laser sont présentés, une comparaison est effectuée avec une autre technique (non-laser) analytique performante, latorche à plasma – spectrométrie de masse. Les différentes techniques laser présentées sont en spectroscopie moléculaire : la lentille thermique, la spectrofluorimétrielaser à résolution temporelle, la fluorescence induite par laser de l'iode, et en spectroscopie atomique : la spectroscopie optogalvanique, la fluorescence induite par laser en four de graphite, la fluorescence induite par laser dans unetorche à plasma, la spectroscopie d'ionisation résonnante colinéaire et l'ionisation laser couplée à la spectrométrie de masse. Les principaux avantages des techniques de spectroscopie laser sont l'absence de préparation d'échantillon, la rapidité, la sélectivité, la sensibilité ainsi que la possibilité de pouvoir effectuer des analyses à distance via fibre optique.

The extent of radiocaesium in soil is very important to appreciate the risk of its recycling by the vegetation and thus the risk of food chain contamination. An intrinsic soil parameter, the radiocaesium interception potential (RIP), could be used to measure this retention. In this study, we tested the possibility to predict the RIP starting from a simple acid extraction in widely different soils coming from the whole world and pertaining to various soil reference groups of the WRB/FAO world soil classification. Our results show that a simple acid extraction could be used as an operational test to estimate the RIP whatever the soil type.
