Recently, an article was published in this journal (Hartz et al. 2012), presenting new data on the age of early ceramics in eastern Europe (in particular, the central Russian Plain) and discussing the issues related to the appearance of pottery (i.e. Neolithization) in this region, with wider implications of the results for northern Eurasia. I was one of the reviewers of this paper, which is acknowledged by the authors. However, despite my numerous remarks and comments, many of them were not taken into account. As a result, the work by Hartz et al. (2012) suffers from several flaws; here I point them out and briefly discuss the issue of the Neolithization of Eurasia.

More than 70 logboats are known in Lithuania and about half of them date before 1800 cal AD. This paper reviews these more ancient logboats, which were discovered in the beds of former or still existing lakes and rivers and present new radiocarbon (14C) dates and wood taxa identifications. Special attention is paid to the logboat found at Šventoji 58, which is at present the oldest 14C-dated (2895–2640 cal BC) logboat found East of the Baltic Sea. Most logboats from the pre-1800s period were 14C dated to medieval and early modern periods and they were made out of pine and oak wood. From a very scarce dataset available it seems that oak wood was introduced into logboat building by Neolithic people, who also brought new technologies in stone tool production. We also noted that 14C dating does not confirm the logboat typology suggested in earlier studies.

In 1989 an ancient burial consisting of a skeleton and a few objects was discovered at the Monte dei Cappuccini Monastery, in Torino (Italy). Anthropological analysis of the skeleton revealed that it belonged to a young man, and the archaeometric characterization of the objects suggested that most of them are compatible with the Medieval period. As a proper archeological survey was not conducted at the time of the finding, due to the religious nature of the site, a high-precision radiocarbon (14C) dating has been performed. The samples were processed with three different methods: besides the ultrafiltration (UF) treatment, we applied the “collagen” (COL) and the Longin-base (LB) methods. While UF and COL treatments provided compatible results, LB method returned ages older with respect the UF one, with significant disagreements in some cases and this evidence is supported by several measurements on the same individual. Thanks to the reduction of the uncertainty with the high number of measured samples and the availability of historical evidence, the possible age of the burial has been limited to the time interval 1464–1515 cal AD.

Variability in temperature and 14C levels are recorded in coralline aragonite that grew in the Gulf Stream during the past four centuries. In particular, 18O/16O ratios reflect a decrease of ca 1°C in surface water temperature during the latter part of the Little Ice age. 14C levels also rose in the surface waters of the Gulf Stream and in atmospheric CO2 during the Maunder minimum. These observations indicate that ocean circulation may have been significantly different in the North Atlantic around the beginning of the 18th century.

We report on a review of 14C production and release from the nuclear industry in the United Kingdom (UK). Using earlier predictions (Bush, White and Smith 1984) it is estimated that a total of 1764 TBq of 14C would have been produced in UK graphite-moderated reactors up to the end of 1995, and 135 TBq of this total would have been released. Release rates, based on reported discharges, of 5.1 and 0.93 TBq GW(e)a-1 have been derived for Magnox reactors and Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors (AGRs), respectively. Using these new figures, cumulative discharges of 14C up to 1995 from reactors have been estimated at 531 TBq. The combination of these reactor discharges and the reported discharges from Sellafield (388 TBq) and Amersham (52 TBq) suggest a total cumulative release of 971 TBq of 14C up to the end of 1995.

The site area of Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou (Limassol, Cyprus) has been surveyed and systematically excavated since 2007 as a joint research project of the University of Florence and the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus. A focused investigation was dedicated to analyzing funerary evidence from the southern Cemetery (Area E), where 7 single-chamber graves were excavated. The offering goods assemblages from the burials point to a general date ranging from Early to Late Bronze Age I, and draw a sequence of use that is contemporary to the stratigraphic deposits from the top mound Workshop Complex (Area A). During the 2010 field season, charcoal samples from the Workshop Complex and bone samples from the skeleton remains of 2 burials (tombs 228, 230) were opportunely taken for radiocarbon analyses. 14C dating was performed at the AMS-IBA Tandetron accelerator of the INFN-LABEC Laboratory in Florence. This paper will discuss the results of the 14C analyses and compare them with the archaeological evidence in order to outline a chronological sequence for the settlement and cemetery areas at Erimi-Laonin tou Porakou, thus collecting further data on the development and pattern of occupation of the Early to Late Cypriote period in the Kourion area.

The results presented in this list include some recently measured samples (1984) but mostly ones from our earlier years of operation which had not been previously published in RADIOCARBON. It is the first of a number of special lists prepared over the last year so that the backlog of unpublished dates of this laboratory will be cleared. The samples are all archaeologic from the United Kingdom most of which have originated from “rescue”-type excavations.

Moss et al. (2006) provided comments and criticisms of our recent paper in this journal (Hall et al. 2005). We can appreciate the need for promoting vigorous dialogue among those interested in the research of early sites along the New World Pacific Margin and thus welcome their intervention; however, we are compelled to respond because they raise several points that require clarification and introduce a critical error that must be corrected.

The late Pleistocene to early Holocene Champlain Sea provides a unique opportunity to study the development of marine ecosystems in a context of global climatic change. This study presents radiocarbon (14C) dates and stable isotope analyses on 15 vertebrate specimens from Champlain Sea sediments, including the Charlotte Whale, which is Vermont’s State marine fossil. Data are used in an attempt to investigate the timing of colonization and ecological dynamics in this newly formed sea. Using the average marine correction, 14C dates on four specimens likely calibrate prior to or possibly synchronous with the accepted origination date for the Champlain Sea, implying larger marine reservoir effects than the average marine correction in the vertebrate tissues. Without knowing the specific marine reservoir offsets, it is not possible to calculate the timing of colonization or its relation to concurrent climatic change. Observed lower δ13C and δ15N values in walruses, a fin whale, and a right whale support consumption of prey from lower trophic levels such as bivalve mollusks, krill, and copepods. Higher isotopic values in beluga whales and a bird, the thick-billed murre, support consuming fish, such as cod and capelin. These isotopic data show comparable values and relationships as observed in modern arctic marine ecosystems.

The Bronze and Iron Age cultures in Yemen have no parallels to the well dated cultures in the Syro-Palestinian region. Radiocarbon datings are therefore exceptionally important for the Yemenite archaeological excavation sites of Ma'layba and Sabir, the latter being the largest excavation site of the Sabir culture. Dating series were done in order to determine the architectural development of the sites and find time marks for the ceramic development. Sample materials were dated from the 2nd and 1st millennium before Christ. The 14C dating results allow statements about the cultural development in Ma'layba and Sabir as well as a comparison with the development of other regions in the surrounding, independent of only sparse available archaeological parallels.

The total 14C content and its partition between inorganic and organic species were measured on irradiated Zy-4 samples from a CANDU spent fuel rod transferred from Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Long-term leaching tests and accelerated corrosion tests were carried out to measure the 14C release and corrosion rate, respectively, in chemical conditions relevant to cementitious environment. Experimentally measured 14C inventory was compared to the theoretically one predicted based on the irradiation history and impurity content of Zy-4 by means of ORIGEN computations. CANDU SF claddings have a 14C content of around 2 × 104 Bq/g of Zy-4, mainly as organic compounds (more than 99%). The total 14C content measured by acid dissolution/wet oxidation method is in good agreement with the value estimated by ORIGEN simulations for an average burn-up of 7 MWd/kgU. The total 14C released as dissolved species after 18 days and 18 months of Zy-4 immersing in alkaline solution are similar, indicating that a small amount of 14C was available as instant release fraction (0.05% from the initial 14C content) followed by a very low release rate that could not be measured by liquid scintillation counting. In alkaline conditions, 14C is released predominantly (∼70%) as soluble species, but also inorganic 14C was measured as gaseous species. From the soluble 14C released during leaching test, more than 60% was found to be as organic species. Generally, corrosion rates values ranging between 46 and 130 nm/yr were measured by the linear polarization resistance method. In addition, defects and cracks were observed on the oxide layer by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation.

The following list of dates is compiled from samples prepared and catalogued since publication of our last date list (R, 1975, v 17, p 99-111). The counting equipment and operating procedures are the same. Ages are quoted with a 1σ counting error which includes statistical variation of the sample count as well as for background and standard, using ad 1950 as the reference year and 95% NBS oxalic acid for 14C dating as the standard. The half-life value used is 5570 years.

The C14-laboratory at the Geological Survey of Finland was started in October 1960 in order to determine ages of Quaternary objects. Only 11 samples that have been measured are ready to be published. Most samples in the following list have been measured many times in order to control the stability of the system and to make all necessary corrections. The C14-system includes two CO2-filled proportional counters. Until now the measurements have used only the first counter system. The second one is now ready for dating.

The object of our investigation was to study a mechanism of water formation in the Surdulica geothermal system (recharge area, age and homogeneity of the waters). We collected 56 samples to determine the chemical, stable isotope, 14C and tritium content of the waters. We found large stable isotope variations in precipitation collected at different altitudes, whereas the geothermal waters are largely homogeneous and seasonally independent. Data on springs and rivers, the local meteoric water line and recharge area were obtained. Three groups of groundwater were identified by age – modern from natural springs, old from mines and very old from the Vranjska Banja. Because the initial 14C activity of infiltrated waters from the recharge area is unknown, the age of thermal waters can only be inferred, from HCO3 −, 14C and 3H content, to be 10,000 to 28,000 years old.

We used the scintillation variant of the radiocarbon method. The scintillator is prepared on the basis of ethylbenzol [benzene], synthesized from acetylene according to the method of Kuchkarev and Kondratenko (1955). For radiocarbon dating we used materials both rich in carbon: wood and charcoal, and [those] poorer: also peat, buried soils, and fossil bones. The Kostenki-Borshchevo site complex (Voronezh region, Russia) serves as the foundation of Eastern Europe’s Upper Paleolithic chronocultural framework. Here we present new radiocarbon dates for three Kostenki sites. Dates of ∼27.5–27 ka BP for Kostenki 15 suggest that its archaeological layer accumulated over a short period. These results help to confirm that the site is unrelated to Aurignacian assemblages. New dates for the Kostenki-Avdeevo Culture (KAC) Layer I of Kostenki 1 address the longstanding question of its chronology. Our results of ∼23.5–23 ka BP from different areas of the site are consistent with the layer’s accumulation over a short period. These results accord with recently obtained dates for Kostenki’s other KAC sites. Our younger results of ∼22.5–21 ka BP for different material from Layer III of Kostenki 21 are similarly consistent with a short chronological window for Kostenki’s KAC sites. Overall, this and other recent publications support the view that many Kostenki assemblages are chronologically distinct. This provides an important insight into the tempo of Upper Paleolithic cultural change.

My path to the invention of accelerator mass spectrometry—now just called AMS—was quirky and extraordinary, and it is a saga worth telling, particularly for young people who may have an oversimplified image of how progress in science is actually made. It was an adventurous journey, and like many adventures, it was often uncomfortable, haphazard, and frequently characterized by a feeling of being lost. In retrospect, the only reason I set out on this journey was my belief that I didn't know much about finding my path in physics, and that the best I could do was to follow the lead of the great physicist Luis Alvarez. He had an incredible ability to create new and ingenious projects that led in new directions, and I wanted to understand how he did that. So I had decided that I would work with him on any new idea he came up with, even if it inconvenienced the rest of my life. And true to my expectations, while working with Luie (that's what he wanted everyone to call him), I often felt like Odysseus, tossed between distant shores by capricious gods.

The article presents the results of research on the absolute chronology of the Nižná Myšľa cemetery. Due to its scale and location in a key region of the Carpathian Basin, it should be considered one of the most important Early Bronze Age sites in Central Europe. Many years of archaeological research have so far failed to provide adequate data on absolute chronology. This text presents the results of statistical and spatial analyses on a series of newly acquired 14C dates. They allowed us to present a model of the spatial and chronological development of the funerary space and to capture the stage of significant cultural change associated with the adoption of a new raw material—bronze.

Santa Lucía is a pottery production site dating to the Formative period (about 1600 BC to AD 200). It is located in the Cochabamba valleys of the eastern Bolivian Andes. The settlement consists of a residential area and a separate workshop area. A peripheral sector of ash mounds was used as refuse sites and burial grounds. The excavations yielded a total of 16 radiocarbon samples from all 3 sectors, which were dated at the Gliwice Radiocarbon Laboratory (Gliwice, Poland). The results from the deepest trench in the workshop sector (Trench 5) provide information for the stratigraphic sequence and help to define spatial and socioeconomic changes at around 600–500 BC with the beginning of the Late Formative or Santa Lucía III phase. The 14C dates from Santa Lucía, therefore, contribute to a better definition of the existing regional Formative period phases and finally to a better understanding of the processes during the Formative period in the south-central Andes.

A conventional 14C system with either a 15cm3 or a 100cm3 methane gas proportional counting tube, each constructed from high purity copper, has been used at the Washington State University 14C laboratory for three years (Sheppard, Hopper, Westberg, 1981). The electronic components of this system included highly stable (John Fluke) power supplies, modified pre-amplifiers (Canberra), and NIM amplifiers, single channel analyzers, scalers, timers, etc, (ORTEC). Modules were selected for a highly stable low-noise system. The system was designed to minimize problems generated by ground-loops, electromagnetic noise pick-up, and line noise. It operates in a copper-lined basement room of a four-story brick and concrete building along with a second and older gas proportional system which has three 500cm3 copper counting tubes operated at 2 or 3 atmospheres of methane. Analysis of the older system's background data indicates that the background counting rate of 0.8 counts per minute is virtually independent of atmospheric pressure. It has not been possible to determine the pressure dependence of the small counting tubes.
