Slope deposits in the Snowy Mountains of south-eastern Australia have a wide distribution above 1000 m elevation on slopes between approximately 5° and 25° which are well stabilized by the existing forest vegetation. The present environment is not severe enough to initiate slope instability.

The slope deposits consist of fines with gravel and angular stones showing preferred downslope orientation, overlying a generally smooth substrate of weathered bedrock. Pockets and lenses of relatively stone-free organomineral soil containing fragments of carbonized wood sometimes occur near the interface between the slope deposits and the weathered bedrock. Fragments of the carbonized wood carefully selected from three sites in different catchment areas several kilometers apart have similar radiometric ages of between 31,000 and 34,000 years.

The properties of the slope deposits and the context of the site and climatic conditions in which they now occur point to an origin under periglacial conditions commencing 31,000–34,000 years ago, associated with deep seasonal freezing and thawing although not necessarily with permafrost. It is estimated that a substantially lower mean annual temperature, at least 8–10°C less than the present, would have been necessary to produce periglacial conditions down to 1000 m in the Snowy Mountains. On the evidence of similar slope deposits elsewhere in south-eastern Australia, this major cold period was evidently widespread.

Climatic conditions prior to the onset of the cold period appear to have been generally similar to those of today, except perhaps for rather moister and cooler summers.

A preliminary study was made of the magnetic stratigraphy of the Pliocene and Lower Pleistocene marine sediments in Le Castella area, Calabria, Southern Italy. Microbiostratigraphic evidence of the measured sediments provides a basis for tentative correlation with the standard magnetic chronology. The Gilsa Event in the Matuyama Reversed Polarity Epoch is estimated to be a little older than the lower limit of the Calabrian in Le Castella area.

Postglacial uplift data from 33 sites in northeastern North America reveal that during the period from 11,000 years B.P. to 7000 years B.P., glacio-isostatic uplift rates varied in a consistent manner with distance from the former margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The consistent trends of these uplift rate variations with distance from the former ice sheet margin suggest that they were not the result of changes in the rate of ice sheet retreat or local tectonic activity. They instead may have resulted from rebound affected significantly by the earth's viscosity at a depth approximately equal to the wavelength of isostatic deformation [McConnell, R.K., Jr., Journal of Geophysical Research70, 5171 (1965)]. Extremely high viscosities below 600 km, however, probably provide the lower limit for this relationship.

“Thermokarst” as a process is the melting of ground ice and the consequent formation of depressions. Thermokarst landforms depend on the tectonic regime of a region, the ground ice content, and the degree to which the permafrost equilibrium is disturbed. Thermokarst forms are especially prominent in the lowlands of the subnival region with permafrost. The authors distinguish two modes of thermokarst development—permafrost back-wearing and down-wearing—based on their investigations in Siberia. The first mode is characteristic of a more dissected relief. In this case permafrost back-wearing takes place and the process is characterized by development of gullies, thermocirques, and parallel retreat of steep walls with ice veins, resulting in a lower lowland level. The second mode of thermokarst development is due to permafrost melting from above and is typical of a flat undissected relief, mainly that of watershed regions. characteristic forms are depressions with steep slopes and flat floors (alases). Thermokarst valleys develop through coalescence of alases. Thermokarst processes destroy the lowland relief of large areas and create characteristic forms resulting in a lower lowland level. Thus thermokarst represents a special type of lowland development in permafrost conditions.

Between the two wars, studies on the Quaternary were scarcely in favor in France. However. from the beginning of the 19th century recent terrains had held the attention of our country’s eminent geologists, and later that of the prehistorians, and starting in the 1850s these terrains were given the first chronological classifications based, on the one hand, on the evolution of Mammals. and on the other hand, on the succession of prehistoric civilizations.

Corries in Okoa Bay contain glaciers, ice patches or are empty. Each of 165 corries is described by 17 variables that describe shape, location and geometry and also have some relationship to the glaciological conditions in each basin. Analyses of these data in terms of “explaining” the factors controlling glacierization (using information and graph-theoretic methods and multiple stepwise discriminant analysis) all emphasize the importance of elevation on the current pattern. Orientation is also significant as virtually all glaciers and ice patches are contained in north-facing corries. Residual elevations from a linear trend surface on corrie lip altitudes indicate that empty corries lie, on average, only 200 m below those currently ice-filled, thus the area is extremely sensitive to the effects of climatic change. Empty corries also lie at the same elevations, on average, in north- and south-facing locations. The orientation of glacierized corries toward the north is a reflection of the variations in insolation between north- and south-facing slopes at latitude 67°30′N. Calculations indicate a difference under clear skies of 25% for global radiation and ∼50% for absorbed short-wave radiation. The 200-m lowering of local snowline implied by the corrie lip data is equivalent to a 1.2°C temperature decrease—this is the same as estimates based on changes in the earth's orbital parameters for this latitude. A lowering of temperature results in an increase in the ratio: sublimation/melting which leads to a reduction in the amount of ablation. It is suggested that glacierization of much of Baffin Island is possible with a lowering of snowline by 200 m, this could then trigger other areas such as Labrador and Keewatin.

Biotite-bearing chalky-white rhyolitic ash, here called the Bishop ash bed, occurs in-middle Pleistocene alluvial and lacustrine deposits at eight localities scattered from California to Nebraska and is correlated with the basal air-fall lapilli of the Bishop Tuff, an ash flow of eastern California, radiometrically dated about 0.7 million years. Correlation of the Bishop ash bed with the air-fall lapilli is made on the basis of similar petrography and on chemistry as determined by electron microprobe, atomic absorption, and emission spectrographic analyses. At five localities the Bishop ash bed lies stratigraphically below a Pearlette-like ash. As more occurrences of the Bishop ash bed are found, it should become an increasingly important dated stratigraphic marker relating middle Pleistocene deposits and events across several geomorphic provinces.

Another biotite-bearing chalky-white ash, here called the ash of Green Mountain Reservoir, occurs at three other localities and is distinguishable from the Bishop ash bed by small differences in chemical composition of the glass. The ash of Green Mountain Reservoir is younger than the Bishop ash bed, as shown by the fact that at one locality it lies stratigraphically above the aforementioned bed of Pearlette-like ash.

Un forage réalisé en 1966 dans le récif-barrière de la côte sud-ouest de Nouvelle-Calédonie a traversé, avant d'atteindre un substratum éocène à la profondeur de 226 mètres, un ensemble sédimentaire carbonaté divisé en 5 grandes unités lithologiques. L'examen de ces dernières révèle la présence, dès la base, de sédiments vraisemblablement post-miocènes, d'origine peu profonde, semblant s'être déposés durant une subsidence du socle. Le récif-barrière actuel, s'élevant d'une profondeur voisine de 70 mètres, parait être lié, au contraire, à la seule influence de phénomènes glacioeustatiques datant au plus du Quaternaire moyen.

Volcanic ash deposits whose source is the Cascade Mountains area were correlated on the basis of 19 elemental abundances obtained by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). After activation of glassy separates in a TRIGA reactor, gammaray spectra were obtained and analyzed with computer programs. The elements Na, Sm, Sc, Fe, Ce, Hf, and Th were determined with relative standard deviations less than 5%; the precision for La, Co, Eu, Yb, Cs, Ba, and Lu was less than 17%; larger errors were obtained for Rb, Ta, Nd, Tb, and Cr. A statistical method was developed for correlation on the basis of relative elemental compositions unique to the ash deposits. Elemental abundances of Mazama glassy separates were independent of distance from the source. The site to site chemical variability of crystal rich Glacier Peak and St. Helens ash layers was greater than for Mazama and Newberry ashes. The Rb, Yb, Lu, Th, and Ta contents in Newberry glass were more than twice those in Mazama glass. The concentrations of trace elements in Glacier Peak and St. Helens ashes generally were less than one-half those in Mazama glass. The presence of Mazama ash has been confirmed at sites in Oregon, Washington, Alberta, and in sediments of the Pacific Ocean.

Electrical resistivity field measurements and subsequent laboratory analyses of the electrical properties of soils and rocks, both frozen and unfrozen, are used to describe the type and configuration of permafrost in Wright and Taylor Valleys, Antarctica. Rock and soil samples saturated with potable water have resistivities that increase four orders of magnitude when cooled from +21°C to −25°C. Resistivities greater than 10,000 ohm-m are associated with an impermeable variety of permafrost referred to in this paper as confining permafrost. Confining permafrost is continuous throughout the ice-free valleys except near McMurdo Sound and under saline lakes. A hydrologic connection between lakes and the groundwater reservoir beneath the lakes is inferred; thus, part of the brines contained in the lakes may be derived from groundwater.

Radiocarbon dates of organic matter collected from ablation till or from the base of peat bogs in dead-ice deposits may postdate retreat of an active glacier terminus by hundreds or even thousands of years, and therefore provide only minimum estimates for the time of glacial maximum and the beginning of ice recession. Logs incorporated in Vashon till close to the drift border postdate recession of the Puget Lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet by some 1400 years, and probably were buried when drift-mantled stagnant ice melted away, causing collapse of a superglacial forest.

Twenty-nine samples of volcanic ash from the Pacific Northwest were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation techniques, with the aim of distinguishing among ashes from different sources. Preliminary results of petrographic studies of 42 ash or pumice samples are also reported. Geochemical characteristics of Mazama ash are defined, and problems induced by winnowing of crystalline material during transport and by weathering are discussed. Contents of La, Th, and Co, and La/Yb ratios are shown to be good discriminants. Data on refractive indices and on proportions of crystalline materials also aid in distinguishing among the various volcanic ashes studied. Ash and pumice found in archaeological contexts at Fort Rock Cave, Paisley Cave, Wildcat Canyon, and Hobo Cave are all from Mount Mazama, presumably from the culminating cruption of 7000 years ago.
