Archaeological materials in several prairie mounds in the northern Western Lowlands of southeastern Missouri indicate that mounds began forming prior to ca. 5000-3000 yr B.P. The mounds subsequently were inundated and built up to their modern configuration by aggradational and reworking processes. Human use of the mounds may have been tied to exploitation of aquatic animals residing in backwater habitats during periods of prolonged flooding. Principal features of the sampled portion of the mound field include preoccupation topographic highs, early occupation (ca. 5000-3000 yr B.P.) layers that drape the topographic highs, and later occupation (ca. 3000-950 yr B.P.) layers that drape earlier occupation layers and extend onto intermound areas.

Vegetation and climate over approximately the past 13,000 yr are reconstructed from fossil pollen in a 9.4-m mire section at Caleta Róbalo on Beagle Channel, Isla Navarino (54°56′S, 67°38′W), southern Tierra del Fuego. Fifty surface samples reflecting modern pollen dispersal serve to interpret the record. Chronologically controlled by nine radiocarbon dates, fossil pollen assemblages are: Empetrum-Gramineae-Gunnera-Tubuliflorae (zone 3b, 13,000–11,850 yr B.P.), Gramineae-Empetrum-assorted minor taxa (zone 3a, 11,850-10,000 yr B.P.), Nothofagus-Gramineae-Tubuliflorae-Polypodiaceae (zone 2, 10,000–5000 yr B.P.), Nothofagus-Empetrum (zone 1b, 5000-3000 yr B.P.), and Empetrum-Nothofagus (zone 1a, 3000-0 yr B.P.). Assemblages show tundra under a cold, dry climate (zone 3), followed by open woodland (zone 2), as conditions became warmer and less dry, and later, with greater humidity and lower temperatures, by closed forest and the spread of mires (zone 1). Comparisons drawn with records from Antarctica, New Zealand, Tasmania, and the subantarctic islands demonstrate broadly uniform conditions in the circumpolar Southern Hemisphere. The influences of continental and maritime antarctic air masses were apparently considerable in Tierra del Fuego during cold late-glacial time, whereas Holocene climate was largely regulated by interplay between maritime polar and maritime tropical air.

The vertebrate fauna recovered from indurated conglomerates at Wallingford Roadside Cave (central Jamaica) is shown to be in excess of 100,000 yr old according to uranium series and electron spin resonance dating. The Wallingford local fauna is therefore pre-Wisconsinan in age, and Roadside Cave is now the oldest radiometrically dated locality in the West Indies containing identifiable species of land mammals. In the absence of a good radiometric record for Quaternary paleontological sites in the Caribbean, there is no satisfactory basis for determining whether most extinct Antillean mammals died out in a “blitzkrieg”-like event immediately following initial human colonization in the mid-Holocene. Fossils of Clidomys (Heptaxodontidae, Caviomorpha), the giant Wallingford rodent, have never been found in situ in sediments of demonstrably Holocene age, and its extinction may antedate the middle Holocene. This is also a possibility for the primate Xenothrix mcgregori, although its remains have been found in loose cave earth. A major, climate-driven bout of terrestrial vertebrate extinction at about 14,000–12,000 yr B.P. has been hypothesized for the West Indies by G. Pregill and S. L. Olson (Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics 12, 75–98, 1981), but at present there is nothing to connect the disappearance of Clidomys with this event either. Quaternary extinctions in the Caribbean may prove to be of critical significance for evaluating the reality of New World blitzkrieg, but not until an effort is mounted to constrain them rigorously using modern radiometric approaches.

Marguerite Bay, situated between the subpolar glacial regime of the northern Antarctic Peninsula and the polar glacial regime of West Antarctica, is ideally located to test various models of glacial and glacial-marine sedimentation and specific scenarios of late Wisconsin ice sheet expansion. Piston cores and single-channel seismic reflection data were collected during the Deep Freeze 85 and 86 expeditions to determine the late Quaternary history of the area. Seismic data in the bay show a rugged seafloor, with numerous deep troughs and a very thin layer of sediment over crystalline basement or older sediments. Glacial erosion is important in modifying existing features, although the ultimate repository of the eroded material is not known; it is not found within the bay. The piston cores are topped by diatomaceous muds, which are underlain by terrigenous muds and muddy gravels that imply deposition beneath an ice shelf. Basal tills were penetrated at three sites, reflecting deposition by a grounded marine ice sheet. A reconstruction of the glacial history of Marguerite Bay since the last glacial maximum shows grounded ice filling the bay in late Wisconsin time. Rising sea level caused an uncoupling of the ice sheet and slow retreat of an ice shelf throughout the Holocene.

Evidence for annual seasonal migration of extinct Bison antiquus in the late Pleistocene fossil assemblage from Rancho La Brea, California, is demonstrated for the first time. The maturation of individuals from the B. antiquus sample was analyzed using the cheek tooth eruption sequence and occlusal wear patterns in juvenile and young adult inferior dentitions. Individual age of the specimens was established by comparison with wear stages observed in modern B. bison dentitions of known age. Assuming that reproductive behavior was restricted to a specific annual cycle similar to modern B. bison, B. antiquus was seasonally present at Rancho La Brea during the late spring. An annual migratory pattern is indicated by the presence in the assemblage of yearly groups of young individuals of the same age.

Glacial recession from the Antarctic continental shelf is recorded by glacial-marine diamictons, sands, and overlying siliceous oozes. In order to clarify the chronology for this sequence, use was made of the University of Arizona tandem accelerator mass-spectrometer (TAMS) for 14C dating. Small samples of benthic and planktonic foraminifera were selectively removed from diamictons, graded sands, and surface sediments which were recovered from the Wilkes Land continental shelf and slope, East Antarctica. Organic carbon was also utilized as a source for TAMS dating of the siliceous oozes and muds. Uncorrected ages varied from 14,260 ± 140 to 3230 ± 200 yr B.P. Carbon fixed by phytoplankton and foraminifera is strongly influenced by old, glacial-derived CO2. Thus, reservoir corrections of up to 5500 yr are needed for the 14C dates. Iceberg turbation reworks foraminifera so that dates from resulting deposits (diamictons) are interpreted as maximum ages. The consistency of corrected ages from the shelf, along with the sedimentologic interpretation, suggests a rather recent recession, perhaps mid-Holocene for this portion of the East Antarctic ice sheet. Further application of the TAMS method should help clarify other problems concerning the late Quaternary glacial history of Antarctica.

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios have been determined for tooth collagen of 27 prehistoric herbivores from a rock shelter in the central Rift Valley of Kenya. Collagen samples whose isotope ratios were not altered by diagenesis were identified using several analytical methods. During the later Holocene, when the climate was as dry or drier than at present, the isotopic compositions of individual animals are similar to those of modern individuals of the same species. During the earlier Holocene, when the climate was wetter than at present, the δ15N and δ13C values are lower than those for their modern counterparts. When diagenetic factors can be discounted and adequate modern comparative data are available, stable isotope analysis of herbivore teeth and bones can be used to evaluate prehistoric climate and habitat conditions.

Comparison of Southern Ocean diatom populations from (i) surface ocean production, (ii) underlying Antarctic sediments, and (iii) laboratory dissolution experiments demonstrates that dissolution can account for the temporal and spatial variations in sedimentary diatom assemblages observed in Southern Ocean sediments. Increasing dissolution causes relative depletions in N. kerguelensis (K), enrichments in T. lentiginosa (L), and slight enrichments in E. antarctica (A). This reflects the relative susceptibility to dissolution of the three species that dominate Antarctic sediments. We have devised a preservation index for the Southern Ocean based on the ratio K/(K + L) to estimate relative extents of dissolution and applied it to natural assemblages. Holocene Southern Ocean sediments display increasing opal preservation toward higher latitudes, but south of the Antarctic Polar Front preservation decreases in the order: well preserved = SE Indian > S. Atlantic ∼ SW Indian > SE Pacific = poorly preserved. Dissolution also accounts for the pattern of diatom assemblages in the last glacial maximum (LGM) sediments of the Indian and Pacific sectors, but in the Atlantic, increased E. antarctica abundances at LGM must have resulted from an increase in surface ocean production of this species. Holocene and LGM diatoms in Atlantic and Pacific sector sediments are equally well preserved, but in the Indian sectors, Holocene sediments are better preserved than those of LGM age. Paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic transfer functions derived from factor analyses of variations in the sedimentary abundances of these three diatoms have ignored the effects of differential dissolution on thanatocoenosis and thus should be interpreted with caution.

14C dates obtained by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) on monospecific foraminiferal samples from two deep-sea sediment cores raised in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean have been corrected for the difference in 14C composition between atmosphere and sea surface by using a reconstruction of the latitudinal 14C gradient which existed in the Southern Ocean prior to 1962. The corrected AMS-14C data show a reduced sedimentation rate in core MD 84-527 between 25,000 and 10,000 yr BP. For core MD 84-551 the available data suggest that the sedimentation rate was higher during the Holocene than during the glacial period. These changes in sedimentation rates may be attributed to an increased opal dissolution during the last glacial maximum.
