We generate ray-class fields over imaginary quadratic fields in terms of Siegel–Ramachandra invariants, which are an extension of a result of Schertz. By making use of quotients of Siegel–Ramachandra invariants we also construct ray-class invariants over imaginary quadratic fields whose minimal polynomials have relatively small coefficients, from which we are able to solve certain quadratic Diophantine equations.

Let [An,k]n,k⩾0 be an infinite lower triangular array satisfying the recurrence

for n ⩾ 1 and k ⩾ 0, where A0,0 = 1, A0,k = Ak,–1 = 0 for k > 0. We present some criteria for the log-concavity of rows and strong q-log-convexity of generating functions of rows. Our results can be applied to many well-known triangular arrays, such as the Pascal triangle, the Stirling triangle of the second kind, the Bell triangle, the large Schröder triangle, the Motzkin triangle, and the Catalan triangles of Aigner and Shapiro, in a unified approach. In addition, we prove that the binomial transformation not only preserves the strong q-log-convexity property, but also preserves the strong q-log-concavity property. Finally, we demonstrate that the strong q-log-convexity property is preserved by the Stirling transformation and Whitney transformation of the second kind, which extends some known results for the strong q-log-convexity property.

We show that there exist an infinite number of topological orbits in classes of complex map germs from the plane to the plane that have a representative of type (xy, xa + yb ), with (a, b) ≠ = (2, 3) or (2, 5). Our key tool to prove this existence is the existence (or not) of stems in the class; these germs are not -finitely determined and allow the determination of a non-finite number of topological orbits. We also show that the class (xy, x 2 + y 5) has two topological orbits.

Propagation at a finite speed is established for non-negative weak solutions to a thin-film approximation of the two-phase Muskat problem. The expansion rate of the support matches the scale invariance of the system. Moreover, we determine sufficient conditions on the initial data for the occurrence of waiting time phenomena.

In this paper we are interested in the microscopic modelling of a two-dimensional two-well problem that arises from the square-to-rectangular transformation in (two-dimensional) shape-memory materials. In this discrete set-up, we focus on the surface energy scaling regime and further analyse the Hamiltonian that was introduced by Kitavtsev et al. in 2015. It turns out that this class of Hamiltonians allows for a direct control of the discrete second-order gradients and for a one-sided comparison with a two-dimensional spin system. Using this and relying on the ideas of Conti and Schweizer, which were developed for a continuous analogue of the model under consideration, we derive a (first-order) continuum limit. This shows the emergence of surface energy in the form of a sharp-interface limiting model as well the explicit structure of the minimizers to the latter.

In this paper we are interested in a sharp result about the global existence and blowup of solutions to a class of pseudo-parabolic equations. First, we represent a unique local weak solution in a new integral form that does not depend on any semigroup. Second, with the help of the Nehari manifold related to the stationary equation, we separate the whole space into two components S+ and S– via a new method, then a sufficient and necessary condition under which the weak solution blows up is established, that is, a weak solution blows up at a finite time if and only if the initial data belongs to S–. Furthermore, we study the decay behaviour of both the solution and the energy functional, and the decay ratios are given specifically.

Conjectures are given for Hilbert series related to polynomial invariants of finite general linear groups: one for invariants mod Frobenius powers of the irrelevant ideal and one for cofixed spaces of polynomials.

In 1992 Ermentrout and McLeod published in this journal a landmark study of travelling wavefronts for a differential–integral equation model of a neural network. Since then a number of authors have extended the model by adding an additional equation for a ‘recovery variable’, thus allowing the possibility of travelling-pulse-type solutions. In a recent paper, Faye gave perhaps the first rigorous proof of the existence (and stability) of a travelling-pulse solution for a model of this type, treating a simplified version of equations originally developed by Kilpatrick and Bressloff. The excitatory weight function J used in this work allowed the system to be reduced to a set of four coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs), and a specific firing-rate function S, with parameters, was considered. The method of geometric singular perturbation was employed, together with blow-ups. In this paper we extend Faye's results on existence by dropping one of his key hypotheses, proving the existence of pulses at least two different speeds, and, in a sense, allowing a wider range of the small parameter in the problem. The proofs are classical and self-contained aside from standard ODE material.

This paper deals with the spectral properties of self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with δʹ-type conditions on infinite regular trees. Firstly, we discuss the semi-boundedness and self-adjointness of this kind of Schrödinger operator. Secondly, by using the form approach, we give the necessary and sufficient condition that ensures that the spectra of the self-adjoint Schrödinger operators with δʹ-type conditions are discrete.

Positive solutions of a Kirchhoff-type nonlinear elliptic equation with a non-local integral term on a bounded domain in ℝN, N ⩾ 1, are studied by using bifurcation theory. The parameter regions of existence, non-existence and uniqueness of positive solutions are characterized by the eigenvalues of a linear eigenvalue problem and a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. Local and global bifurcation diagrams of positive solutions for various parameter regions are obtained.

We consider the Steklov eigenvalues of the Laplace operator as limiting Neumann eigenvalues in a problem of mass concentration at the boundary of a ball. We discuss the asymptotic behaviour of the Neumann eigenvalues and find explicit formulae for their derivatives in the limiting problem. We deduce that the Neumann eigenvalues have a monotone behaviour in the limit and that Steklov eigenvalues locally minimize the Neumann eigenvalues.
