We prove the following theorem: if w is a quasi-conformal mapping of the unit disc onto itself satisfying elliptic partial differential inequality , then w is Lipschitz continuous. This result extends some recent results where, instead of an elliptic differential operator, only the Laplace operator is considered.

We study the homogenization of the linearized system of elasticity standing for the equilibrium equation of a highly periodic heterogeneous elastic medium submitted to small deformations and made of two different materials: a very rigid material located in a set Fε (ε being the size of the period of the medium) of vertical fibres surrounded by a soft elastic material localized in the set Mε. The ratio between the coefficients of the elasticity tensor of the two materials is assumed to be 1/ε4. We deal with the general case without any special assumption, such as isotropy, on the material.

By variational methods, for a type of Yamabe problem with boundary, we construct multi-peak solutions whose maxima tend to the boundary as the parameter tends to 0+ under certain assumptions. We also obtain the asymptotic behaviours of the solutions.

This paper is devoted to studying the asymptotic behaviour of a sequence of elliptic systems posed in a sequence of rough domains Ωn. The solutions un are assumed to satisfy un(x) ϵ Vn(x), where Vn(x) is a vectorial space depending on . This enables one to consider several types of boundary conditions posed in variable sets of the boundary. For some choices of the vectorial spaces Vn(x), our study provides, in particular, some classical results for the homogenization of Dirichlet elliptic problems in varying domains.

We investigate two settings of the Ginzburg—Landau system posed on a manifold where vortices are unstable. The first is an instability result for critical points with vortices of the Ginzburg—Landau energy posed on a simply connected, compact, closed 2-manifold. The second is a vortex annihilation result for the Ginzburg—Landau heat flow posed on certain surfaces of revolution with boundary.

A Stokesian fluid in motion along a porous medium saturated by the same fluid is modelled by the Beavers—Joseph—Saffman boundary-value problem to generalized Forchheimer—Stokes—Fourier systems: what we call the Beavers—Joseph—Saffman (BJS) problem. The model has nonlinear character given by the temperature dependence of physical parameters such as the viscosity, the permeability, the thermal conductivity and the thermal expansion. The paper is concerned with the study of the steady-state and the time-dependent regimes via the Galerkin and the Faedo—Galerkin techniques, respectively.

We consider a class of variational equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact Riemannian surface, describing the mean-field equation of the equilibrium turbulence with arbitrarily signed vortices. For the first time, we consider the problem with both supercritical parameters and we give an existence result by using variational methods. In doing so, we present a new Moser–Trudinger-type inequality under suitable conditions on the centre of mass and the scale of concentration of both eu and e−u, where u is the unknown function in the equation.

On any spacelike surface in a light cone of four-dimensional Lorentz–Minkowski space, a distinguished smooth function is considered. We show how both extrinsic and intrinsic geometry of such a surface are codified by this function. The existence of a local maximum is assumed to decide when the spacelike surface must be totally umbilical, deriving a Liebmann-type result. Two remarkable families of examples of spacelike surfaces in a light cone are explicitly constructed. Finally, several results that involve the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator of a compact spacelike surface in a light cone are obtained.

We consider a general class of parabolic equations of the type

with Dirichlet boundary conditions and with a right-hand side belonging to L1 + Lp′ (W−1, p′). Using the framework of renormalized solutions we prove uniqueness results under appropriate growth conditions and Lipschitz-type conditions on a(u, ∇u), K(u) and H(∇u).

We study the semilinear elliptic inequality –Δu ≥ φ(δK (x))f(u) in ℝN / K, where φ, f are positive and non-increasing continuous functions. Here K ⊂ ℝN (N ≥ 3) is a compact set with finitely many components, each of which is either the closure of a C2 domain or an isolated point, and δK (x) = dist(x, ∂K). We obtain optimal conditions in terms of φ and f for the existence of C2-positive solutions. Under these conditions we prove the existence of a minimal solution and we investigate its behaviour around ∂K as well as the removability of the (possible) isolated singularities.

We give a new bound ω < 2.37369 for the exponent of complexity of matrix multiplication, giving a small improvement on the previous bound obtained by Coppersmith and Winograd. The proof involves an extension of the method used by these authors. We have attempted to make the exposition self-contained.

We study an abstract mixed variational problem, the set of the Lagrange multipliers being dependent on the solution. The problem consists of a system of a variational equation and a variational inequality. We prove the existence of the solution based on a fixed-point technique for weakly sequentially continuous maps. We then apply the abstract result to the weak solvability of a boundary-value problem that models the frictional contact between a cylindrical deformable body and a rigid foundation.

where p > 0. Under optimal conditions on the parameters α > −2 and p > 0, we prove the non-existence of finite Morse index solution on exterior domains or near the origin. We also prove an optimal regularity result for solutions with finite Morse index and isolated rupture at 0.

A third-order system of ordinary differential equations, modelling two predators competing for a single prey species, is analysed in this paper. A delay term modelling the delayed logistic growth of the prey is included. Fixed points of the system are identified, and a linearized stability analysis is carried out. For some parameter regime, there exists a continuum of equilibria and these equilibria may undergo a zip bifurcation. The main results presented herein are that this zip bifurcation is ‘unsustainable’ for certain ranges of values of the time-delay parameter. Finally, spatial diffusion is incorporated in the delay differential equation model, and it is shown that the zip bifurcation remains unsustainable.

In this paper, we study the global existence of positive solutions to the norm-preserving non-local heat flow of the porous-media type equationson the compact Riemannian manifold (M, g) with the Cauchy data u0 > 0 on M, where r ≥ 1, p >1 and λ(t) is chosen to make the L2-norm of the solution u (or a power of u) constant. We show that the limit is an eigenfunction for the Laplacian operator. We use some tricky estimates through the Sobolev imbedding theorem and the Moser iteration method.

A new construction of derived equivalences is given, which relates different endomorphism rings and, more generally, cohomological endomorphism rings, including higher extensions, of objects in triangulated categories. These objects need to be connected by certain universal maps that are cohomological approximations and that exist in very general circumstances. The construction turns out to be applicable to a wide variety of situations, covering finite-dimensional algebras as well as certain infinite-dimensional algebras, Frobenius categories and n-Calabi–Yau categories.

We study the semiclassical limit of the least energy solutions to the nonlinear Dirac equationfor x ∈ ℝ3. We prove that the equation has least energy solutions for all ħ > 0 small, and, in addition, that the solutions converge in a certain sense to the least energy solution of the associated limit problem as ħ → 0.

A new class of integrals involving the confluent hypergeometric function 1F1(a;c;z) and the Riemann Ξ-function is considered. It generalizes a class containing some integrals of Ramanujan, Hardy and Ferrar and gives, as by-products, transformation formulae of the form F(z, α) = F(iz, β), where αβ = 1. As particular examples, we derive an extended version of the general theta transformation formula and generalizations of certain formulae of Ferrar and Hardy. A one-variable generalization of a well-known identity of Ramanujan is also given. We conclude with a generalization of a conjecture due to Ramanujan, Hardy and Littlewood involving infinite series of the Möbius function.

In this paper, we consider nonlinear Schrödinger equations of the following type:

where N ≥ 2 and σ > 0. We concentrate on situations where the potential function V appearing in the linear part of the equation is of Coulomb type; by this we mean potentials where the spectrum of the linear operator −Δ + V consists of an increasing sequence of eigenvalues λ1, λ2,… followed by an interval belonging to the essential spectrum.

We study, for λ kept fixed inside a spectral gap or below λ1, the existence of multiple solution pairs, as well as the bifurcation behaviour of these solutions when λ approaches a point of the spectrum from the left-hand side. Our method proceeds by an analysis of critical points of the corresponding energy functional. To this end, we derive a new variational characterization of critical levels

c0 (λ) ≤ c1(λ) ≤ c2(λ) ≤ ⋯ corresponding to an infinite set of critical points.

We derive such a multiplicity result even if some of the critical values cn(λ) coincide; this seems to be a major advantage of our approach. Moreover, the characterization of these values cn(λ) is suitable for an analysis of the bifurcation behaviour of the corresponding generalized solutions.

The approach presented here is generic; for instance, it can be applied when V and q are periodic functions. Such generalizations are briefly described in this paper and will be the object of a forthcoming article.

We study the Emden–Fowler equation whose coefficient function is even in the interval (—1, 1), negative near t = 0 and positive near t = ±1. Then we prove that a least energy solution is not even. Therefore, the equation has an even positive solution and a non-even positive solution.
