We investigate the behaviour of the eigenvalues of a self-adjoint Sturm–Liouville problem with a separated boundary condition when the interval of the problem shrinks to an end point. It is shown that all the eigenvalues, except possibly the first, approach $+\infty$. The choices of the boundary condition are found for which the first eigenvalue tends to $+\infty$, independent of the coefficient functions, and the same is done for the $-\infty$ limit. For the remaining choices of the boundary condition, several types of condition on the coefficient functions are given, so that the first eigenvalue has a finite or infinite limit and, when the limit is finite, an explicit expression for the limit is obtained. Moreover, numerous examples are presented to illustrate these results, and a construction is given to perturb the finite-limit case to the no-limit case.

The Landau–Ginzburg equations governing a normal/superconducting transition layer are considered. Existence, uniqueness and monotonicity of a solution are proved.

In this paper, we prove the existence of the global smooth solution for the equation of a viscoelastic model with relaxation in time under the only assumption that the C0-norm of the initial data is small, without smallness hypothesis for the C1-norm.

Existence and uniqueness of large, boundary blow-up solutions are obtained for the quasilinear elliptic problem −Δpu = λf(u) in Ω, u = ∞ on ∂Ω via good boundary layer estimates for large λ, where Δp is the p-Laplacian (1 < p < ∞) and Ω ⊂ R N (N ≥ 2) is a bounded smooth domain. The nonlinear term f satisfies f(0) = f(z1) = f(z2) = 0 with 0 < z1 < z2, with z2 a zero of f of order k. It is shown that, if k ≥ p −1, the unique large solution ūλ is a boundary-layer solution which satisfies ūλ > z2 in Ω; if 0 < k < p −1, the unique large solution ūλ is a boundary-layer solution, but a flat core of ūλ occurs. Furthermore, for sufficiently large λ a small positive boundary blow-up solution is obtained and its asymptotic behaviour as λ → ∞ is discussed.

For Banach spaces X and Y, we consider bifurcation from the line of trivial solutions for the equation F (λ, u) = 0, where F : ℝ × X → Y with F (λ, 0) = 0 for all λ ∈ ℝ. The focus is on the situation where F (λ, ·) is only Hadamard differentiable at 0 and Lipschitz continuous on some open neighbourhood of 0, without requiring any Fréchet differentiability. Applications of the results obtained here to some problems involving nonlinear elliptic equations on ℝN, where Fréchet differentiability is not available, are presented in some related papers, which shed light on the relevance of our hypotheses.

We are concerned with the multiplicity of solutions to the system driven by a fractional operator with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Namely, using fibering maps and the Nehari manifold, we obtain multiple solutions to the following fractional elliptic system:

Consider a scattering problem for the Dirac equation with a non-local term including the Hartree type, say the cubic convolution term. We show the existence of scattering operators for small initial data in the subcritical and critical Sobolev spaces.

This paper addresses the computation of normal forms for periodic retarded functional differential equations (FDEs) with autonomous linear part. The analysis is based on the theory previously developed for autonomous retarded FDEs. Adequate nonresonance conditions are derived. As an illustration, the Bogdanov–Takens and the Hopf singularities are considered.

In this paper we find an explicit moving frame along curves of Lagrangian planes invariant under the action of the symplectic group. We use the moving frame to find a family of independent and generating differential invariants. We then construct geometric Hamiltonian structures in the space of differential invariants and prove that, if we restrict them to a certain Poisson submanifold, they become a set of decoupled Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) first and second Hamiltonian structures. We find an evolution of curves of Lagrangian planes that induces a system of decoupled KdV equations on their differential invariants (we call it the Lagrangian Schwarzian KdV equation). We also show that a generalized Miura transformation takes this system to a modified matrix KdV equation. In the four-dimensional case we show that there are no unrestricted compatible geometric pairs.

If we look for a short time at any object, and afterwards turn the eye in another direction, we see a spectral image of the form of the object first looked at.

Again, if after we have looked at any coloured object we turn the eye in another direction, we see a spectral image of a colour complimentary to that first looked at.

In addition to these spectral forms and colours, I find there is another and distinct kind of ocular spectrum, which we may call a motion spectrum. It is seen when we look first at a body in motion and afterwards direct the eye towards an object at rest. The object at rest, when seen under these conditions, seems to be in motion, and the direction of its apparent motion is the opposite of that of the moving body first looked at.

By suitably coupling convexity and weight function methods, we prove uniqueness and continuous dependence theorems in linear elastodynamics in unbounded domains without definiteness conditions on the elasticities. The class of solutions considered allows the “growth” at large spatial distances.

The paper considers an incompressible and irrotational flow of a fluid with constant density bounded below by a rigid horizontal bottom and above by a free surface under the influence of gravity and surface tension. It is known that the full Euler equations have travelling two-dimensional solitary-wave solutions of small amplitude for large surface tension (Bond number greater than ⅓). This paper shows that these waves are linearly unstable to three-dimensional perturbations which oscillate along the wave crest with wavenumber in a finite band. The growth rates of these unstable modes are well approximated using the linearized Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation with positive disper

The connection between the structure of a near-ring and that of the group on which it acts is used to obtain results concerning the structure of near-rings. A generalized R series is defined for an R module, where R is a zero-symmetric left near-ring, and it is shown that all R modules have maximal R series. The idea of a near-ring which annihilates a series is introduced and some easy consequences of the definition are pointed out. Semi-primitive near-rings are introduced and a general structural result connecting the last two ideas is given. Some special cases which generalize earlier results on endomorphism near-rings are stated. Finally some of the limitations of the idea of semi-primitive near-rings are shown, and some applications are given, in particular to the endomorphism near-rings of soluble groups and of the symmetric groups.

We consider random perturbations of two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations. Under some natural conditions on random forces, we study asymptotic properties of solutions and stationary measures.

The purpose of this work is to consider some analytic aspects of the matrix functional differential equation, y′(x) = Ay(λx) + By(x), (0 ≦ x < ∞), where λ is a constant with 0 < λ < 1 and A and B are constant matrices.

Sets of integers are constructed having the property that n members are in arithmetical progression only if they are all equal; here n is any integer greater than or equal to 3. Previous results have been obtained only for n=3. The problem is generalized in various ways. The analysis can also be applied to construct sets for the analogous problem of geometrical progressions. These sets are of positive density, unlike those of the first kind, which have zero density.

In this paper, we study n-dimensional complete submanifolds with constant scalar curvature in the Euclidean space En+p and n-dimensional compact submanifolds with constant scalar curvature in the unit sphere Sn+p(1). We prove that the totally umbilical sphere Sn(r), totally geodesic Euclidean space En and generalized cylinder Sn−1(c) × E1 are the only n-dimensional (n > 2) complete submanifolds Mn with constant scalar curvature n(n − 1)r in the Euclidean space En+p, which satisfy the following condition:where S denotes the squared norm of the second fundamental form of Mn. For compact submanifolds with constant scalar curvature in the unit sphere Sn+p(1), we also obtain a corresponding result (see theorem 1.3).

Conical shock waves are generated as sharp conical solid projectiles fly supersonically in the air. We study such conical shock waves in steady supersonic flow using an isentropic Euler system. The stability of such attached conical shock waves for non-symmetrical conical projectiles and non-uniform incoming supersonic flow is established. Meanwhile, the existence of the solution to the Euler system with such attached conical shock as a free boundary is also proved for solid projectiles close to a regular solid cone.

The objective is to derive a variation of constants formula for systems of functional differential equations (or delay differential equations) coupled with functional equations (or difference equations). The difficulties arise because of the constraints imposed by the functional equations.

We consider initial boundary value problems for the equations of linear thermoelasticity in both bounded and unbounded domains and for both nonhomogeneous and anisotropic media. For bounded domains, it is shown that the unique solution of the problem is time-asymptotically equal to the solution of a particular initial boundary value problem which is obtained from a natural decomposition of the original initial data and which represents a (in general non-vanishing) time harmonic part. For the unbounded case similar results are obtained, but now in the sense of weak convergence which lead to the result of local energy decay: the solution tends to zero in every compactum.
