We consider the ordinary differential equation [Bu(t)]′ = Au(t) with A and B linear operators with domains in a Banach space X and ranges in a Banach space Y. The initial condition is that the limit as (t → 0 of Bu(t) is prescribed in Y. We study the properties of the “solution operator” S(t) which maps the initial state in Y to the solution u(t) at time t. The notion of infinitesimal generator A of S(t) is introduced and the relationships between S(t), an associated semi-group E(t), the operators A and B and some other operators are studied. In particular a pair of operators Ao and Bo, derived from A and B, determine the family S(t) of operators. These so-called “generating pairs” are characterized. The operators A and B and Ao and Bo need not be closed, but form so-called closed pairs which is a weaker condition. We also discuss two applications of the theory.

The Hardy-Rellich inequality given here generalizes a Hardy inequality of Davies, from the case of the Dirichlet Laplacian of a region Ω ⊆ ℝN to that of the higher-order polyharmonic operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The inequality yields some immediate spectral information for the polyharmonic operators and also bounds on the trace of the associated semigroups and resolvents.

We consider the Cauchy problem for the (strictly hyperbolic, genuinely nonlinear) system of conservation laws with relaxation Assume there exists an equilibrium curve A(u), such that r(u,A(u)) = 0. The aim of this paper is the explicit canonical or standard factorisation of matrix functions with Wiener algebra elements. The present approach covers all regular 2 × 2 matrices where two entries are arbitrary and the remaining two are linear combinations of the former with rational coefficient functions. It is based on the knowledge of how to factorise scalar functions and rational matrix functions. In general, one also needs the approximation of any scalar Wiener algebra function with a rational function. However, this can be easily circumvented in many applications by intuitive manipulations with rational matrix functions.

This paper is concerned with multi-dimensional non-isentropic Euler–Poisson equations for plasmas or semiconductors. By using the method of formal asymptotic expansions, we analyse the quasi-neutral limit for Cauchy problems with prepared initial data. It is shown that the small-parameter problems have unique solutions existing in the finite time interval where the corresponding limit problems have smooth solutions. Moreover, the formal limit is justified.

We prove some congruences on sums involving fourth powers of central q-binomial coefficients. As a conclusion, we confirm the following supercongruence observed by Long [Pacific J. Math. 249 (2011), 405–418]:

Riesz transforms $R_\mu$ related to the Bessel operators

are studied in this work. We develop for $R_\mu$ a theory that runs parallel to that for the Euclidean Hilbert transform. It is proved that $R_\mu$ is actually a Calderón–Zygmund singular integral operator. Also, $R_\mu$ is seen to be the boundary value of the appropriate harmonic extension for this context. Finally, we analyse weighted inequalities involving $R_\mu$.

Multiple integrals with polyconvex integrands are studied on the class of all sense-preserving diffeomorphisms from W1,p(Ω, Rn) where Ω is an open subset of Rn. They are proved to be sequentially weakly lower semicontinuous if 1 < p = n –1. An example is presented showing that a similar result is not valid if p <n –1.

Comparatively little has yet been done in the way of precise measurement of the rate at which the exposed surfaces of different kinds of rock are removed in the processes of weathering. A few years ago, some experiments were instituted by Professor Pfaff of Erlangen to obtain more definite information on this subject. He exposed to ordinary atmospheric influences carefully measured and weighed pieces of Solenhofen limestone, syenite, granite (both rough and polished), and bone.

The occurrence in coal seams of planes of division, generally approximately at right angles to the stratification, has been known for centuries. Owing to the important part these planes play in the lay-out of workings, miners have found it necessary carefully to pay heed to their direction and character. They long ago observed, for example, that, in the majority of seams, there are main divisions or “cleats” and secondary divisions or “cross-cleats,” and that these systems intersect at an angle of generally 80 to 90 degrees. It was also seen that cleats are always best developed in the bright parts of bituminous coal, and that they are less distinct, more widely spaced, or even non-apparent in durain and in cannel. When the dull and bright parts are finely laminated, however, the cleat planes pass through the mass without interruption. Sparry inclusions (ankerites) are very common in the cleats of bright coal and equally rare in dull coal; occasionally the inclusions extend a little way into the roof, and then the existence of associated cleat in the roof is particularly easy to detect.

As ε → 0, these solutions approach square waves.

We establish lower and upper bounds which are valid for the overall conductivity of twodimensional composites. They are based on a method which modifies the so-called translation method in a way which makes it effectively much more flexible. When specialised to composites of n > 2 isotropic phases, the new bounds are often strictly better than all the previously known ones. From the mathematical point of view, the improvement is due mainly to a new regularity result in p.d.e.s [2]. From the physical point of view the latter can be interpreted as a result bounding in a suitable sense the fluctuations of the ‘electric field’.

We prove an existence theorem for a steady planar flow of an ideal fluid, containing a bounded symmetric pair of vortices, and approaching a uniform flow at infinity. The data prescribed are the rearrangement class of the vorticity field, and either the momentum impulse of the vortex pair, or the velocity of the vortex pair relative to the fluid at infinity. The stream function ψ for the flow satisfies the semilinear elliptic equation

in a half-plane bounded by the line of symmetry, where φ is an increasing function that is unknown a priori. The results are proved by maximising the kinetic energy over all flows whose vorticity fields are rearrangements of a specified function.

The paper is concerned with nonlinear equations of critical Sobolev growth involving the p-Laplace operator. These equations generalize the more classical scalar curvature equation.

In a previous publication (1983), we defined a class of algebras, denoted by MS, which generalises both de Morgan algebras and Stone algebras. Here we describe the lattice of subvarieties of MS. This is a 20-element distributive lattice. We then characterise all the subvarieties of MS by means of identities. We also show that some of these subvarieties can be described in terms of three important subsets of the algebra. Finally, we determine the greatest homomorphic image of an MS-algebra that belongs to a given subvariety.

For a class of nonlinear Schrodinger equations, we prove the existence of semiclassical stationary states with possibly infinitely many concentration points. As h → 0, these states concentrate near critical points of the potential. Furthermore, for periodic potential, these states can be constructed to satisfy periodic boundary conditions.

We introduce a new variant to prove the regularity of solutions to transport equations of the Vlasov type. Our approach is mainly based on the proof of propagation of velocity moments, as in a previous paper by Lions and Perthame. We combine it with moment lemmas which assert that, locally in space, velocity moments can be gained from the kinetic equation itself. We apply our theory to two cases. First, to the Vlasov–Poisson system, and we solve a long-standing conjecture, namely the propagation of any moment larger than two. Next, to the Vlasov–Stokes system, where we prove the same result for fairly singular kernels.

We consider the characterisation of a class of free boundary problems arising in the flow of a viscous liquid in a porous medium (or, in two dimensions, a Hele–Shaw cell). Injected air forms a bubble which grows as time increases; it is shown that three kinds of behaviour can occur. Firstly, the solution may cease to exist in finite time; secondly, the solution may exist for all time and the free boundary may have one or more limit points as t tends to infinity; and thirdly, the bubble may exist for all time and fill the whole space as t tends to infinity. Two-dimensional explicit examples arc given of all three types of behaviour, and it is proved that the only solutions of the third kind are those in which the bubble is always elliptical; the proof uses the theory of null quadrature domains. It is shown that solutions for ellipsoidal bubbles exist in three dimensions and it is conjectured that the only three-dimensional null quadrature domains with finite complement are those whose complement is an ellipsoid.

This paper is devoted to the study of the elliptic problems with a critical potential, where N ≥ 3, λ ≥ 0 and 0 < q < 1 < p ≤ (N + 2)/(N − 2). Existence, multiplicity, behaviour in x = 0 and bifurcation are considered under some hypotheses in h and g.
