A deformation of the interface between convectively stable, unstable layers in a star can lead to intensified mixing of the elements. Our three-dimensional simulations show that under a condition of deformability of the interface, a coupled long-lived system of large-scale flows, penetrative convection is established. This effect can explain lithium depletion in the solar atmosphere

In our search for clues as to the nature of the exosphere of HD209458 (Moutou et al., 2001 ; Moutou et al., 2003, Iro et al., 2004), we have acquired VLT/UVES data during an ambitious observational campaign performed in June-September 2002 and covering 6 transits of the exoplanet. The resolving power was R=100000 in the 0.475-0.68 micron range. We search for ions and neutral molecules (such as H2O+, CO+, CH+, etc) originating in the planets exosphere and located in the evaporated material around the planet, occulting its primary star. We present in this paper a tentative search in the spectral regions where features of sodium or H$_2$O$^+$ can be present.

We consider the feedback effects of the early reionization on the formation of small galaxies. For this purpose, we perform 3D radiation hydrodynamic simulations with incorporating the radiative transfer for ionizing photons. As a result, it is found that the early reionization is so devastating for low mass systems with $M_{\rm vir} \lesssim 10^8 M_\odot$ or $v_{\rm circ} \lesssim 20 {\rm km/s}$, and almost all gas is photo-evaporated in more than 95% of low mass systems. These results indicate that the low mass dwarf galaxies are not formed directly from isolated CDM density perturbations.

The central problem of galaxy formation is understanding the cooling and condensation of gas in dark matter halos. It is now clear that to match observations this requires further physics than the simple assumptions of single phase gas cooling. A model of multi-phase cooling (Maller & Bullock 2004) can successfully account for the upper cutoff in the masses of galaxies and provides a natural explanation of many types of absorption systems (Mo & Miralda-Escude 1996). Absorption systems are our best probes of the gaseous content of galaxy halos and therefore provide important constraints on models for gas cooling into galaxies. All physical processes that effect gas cooling redistribute gas and therefore are detectable in absorption systems. Detailed studies of the nature of gas in galaxy halos using absorption systems are crucial for building a correct theory of galaxy formation.

Recent spectroscopic observation of $z=6.3$ GRB 050904 is reported with an emphasis on the importance of making similar prompt spectroscopy for long burst GRB events yet to come. A preliminary result of a survey for $z\sim7.0$ Lyman $\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) using a narrow band filter NBF973 is also presented.

Over the past 25 years the number of reliably determined rotation rates of asteroids has increased by an order of magnitude, from 157 in 1979 to 1686 in 2005. As the numbers have increased, various special classes and features have emerged. Asteroids larger than $\sim 50 \,\rm{km}$ diameter have a dispersion of spin rates that is well represented by a single Maxwellian distribution. Smaller asteroids have a more dispersed distribution, with both slow and fast spinning populations. We see a “spin rate barrier” in the size range of 1–10 km diameter that suggests that even rather small asteroids are “rubble piles”. Among the very slow rotators are some (but not all) that are “tumbling” in non-principal axis rotation states. Among the smallest asteroids (less than a few hundred m diameter) are some that spin dramatically faster than the “spin barrier”, indicating that they must have some tensile strength rather than consisting of loose regolith. In the last few years it has been recognized that the spins of asteroids smaller than a few tens of km diameter are affected by radiation pressure torques that tend to either speed up or slow down asteroid spin rates, thus providing an explanation for the dispersion of small asteroid spins, and also their non-random axis orientations. Lightcurves have also revealed the presence of binary asteroids among both Near-Earth and Main-Belt populations. Automated robotic observatories and next-generation survey instruments promise to increase the rate of production of asteroid lightcurves so that we may soon have tens of thousands of lightcurve results, extending down to even smaller sizes. In contrast, there are only about 20 rotation rates known for comets, and 15 for TNOs. Very little can be said from such meager statistics; the mean spin rate of TNOs appears to be comparable to that of asteroids, without extremes of fast or slow rotation; the mean spin rate of comets appears to be a bit slower than asteroids, perhaps due to lower mean density, and there may be an excess of slow rotators, probably due to gas jetting effects. The future is promising for studies of these objects as larger telescopes become available to do photometry to fainter magnitudes, so that comet nuclei can be studied at greater heliocentric distance with less coma interference, and more TNOs can be observed.

Polarimetry in gamma-rays has the capability to enhance our understanding of compact object emission in our galaxy. In particular this diagnostic method could provide useful insight into the geometrical arrangement of these emitting objects and the roles that magnetic fields play in their emisson mechanisms. Gamma Ray Bursts have been studied in this way but the results, perhaps indicating a high degree of polarisation, remain unverified [Coburn & Boggs (2003), Wigger et al. (2004), Willis et al. (2005)]. The nature of GRBs solve many instrumental problems in polarimetry, however their true nature is less well defined and so a study of a better understood object such as the Crab Pulsar, for now, may reveal more as to the physics of the system.

I review recent observational progress on the search for accretion signatures in massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). In this context, the primary tool will be 1–5 μm high resolution ($\lambda/\Delta\lambda \,{=}\,$50,000) spectroscopy. The observational regime is the phase between massive star formation (collapse, accretion, mergers, etc) and the fully revealed OB star photosphere, the phase for which the term “Massive Star Birth” was originally coined. In this phase, we seek both the signature of the earlier accretion process and the photospheric markers of the truly massive star which is on the main sequence. The sample of objects used in this endeavor are massive young stars located in nascent clusters powering Galactic giant H II regions. Emission in the 2.3 μm 2–0 vibrational–rotational bandhead of CO is observed as are the ionized lines of Hydrogen, Helium, and other abundant elements. High spectral resolution is key in giving geometrical clues to the circumstellar emission sources, both through individual line profiles (i.e. shapes) and positions.

Understanding the molecular phase of the ISM in starburst and active galaxies is important for the modelling of the onset and evolution of their nuclear activity. Observations of high density gas tracers such as HCN, HNC, HC3N, HCO+ and CN are essential for probing physical and chemical conditions of the dense, star-forming gas. These tracers show great potential as indicators of the evolution of star formation as well as probes of X-ray illuminated molecular gas around an active galactic nucleus (AGN). In particular, towards the inner kpc of luminous and ultra luminous galaxies will molecular line ratios prove useful as diagnostic tools, since optical and even near infrared starburst tracers are difficult to apply in these highly obscured regions.

The Working Group was formed at the request of the Board of DivisionIII and approved by the IAU Executive committee in March 2004. This was in recognition of the fact that discoveries in the Trans Neptunian region were repeatedly raising the question of “what is a planet”. The task of the WG was to investigate the options available and give indications of the level of support and opposition for each if more than one option was emerging.

The IAU Division IV (‘Stars’) organizes astronomers studying the characteristics, interior and atmospheric structure, and evolution of stars of all masses, ages, and chemical compositions.

During the triennial starting at the Sydney General Assembly in August 2003, the following o.cials served in Division IV: President – Dainis Dravins (Lund, Sweden); Organizing Committee – Beatriz Barbuy (São Paolo, Brazil; former Div.IV president); Christopher Corbally (Vatican & Tucson, USA; Comm. 45 President); Wojciech Dziembowski (Warsaw, Poland; Comm. 35 President); William Hartkopf (Washington DC, USA; Comm. 26 President); Christopher Sneden (Austin, USA; Comm. 29 President), and Monique Spite (Paris-Meudon, France; Comm. 36 President).

I will review the discovery of microquasars and their importance in our understanding of High Energy Sources in Galaxies.

We constrain energy spectra of supernova neutrinos using the $\nu$-process light element synthesis in supernovae and the $^{11}$B abundance during Galactic chemical evolution. We calculate supernova nucleosynthesis due to the $\nu$-process assuming that neutrino energy spectra are Fermi-Dirac distributions with zero chemical potential. We investigate the dependence of the $^{11}$B yield on the total neutrino energy and the temperature of $\nu_{\mu,\tau}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu,\tau}$. From the obtained yields and the contribution to the $^{11}$B yield from supernovae constrained by observed abundances and Galactic chemical evolution models, we find an acceptable range of the temperature of $\nu_{\mu,\tau}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu,\tau}$ of 4.8 MeV to 6.6 MeV.

While the physical characterization of near-Earth objects (NEOs) is progressing at a much slower rate than that of discovery, a substantial body of thermal-infrared data has been gathered over the past few years. A wide variety of taxonomic classes in the NEO population have now been sampled by means of thermal-infrared spectrophotometric observations. The resulting albedo information, together with the distribution of taxonomic types from spectroscopic investigations and the rapidly increasing catalog of orbits and absolute magnitudes derived from NEO search programs, such as LINEAR, facilitates more accurate estimates of the size distribution of the NEO population and the magnitude of the impact hazard. Despite our rapidly increasing knowledge of the NEO population, many questions and uncertainties remain, such as: How does the albedo distribution of NEOs compare with that of main-belt asteroids, and does space weathering play a role? How does the surface structure and regolith coverage of NEOs vary with size and taxonomic type? What fraction of NEOs are extinct comets? A property of particular interest is the surface thermal inertia of small asteroids, which is an indicator of the presence or lack of a thermally-insulating surface layer. Large asteroids can accumulate regolith, but can very small asteroids retain thermally-insulating collisional debris or at least a dust layer? Knowledge of thermal inertia is important for accurate calculations of the Yarkovsky effect, which can significantly influence the orbital evolution of potentially hazardous NEOs, and for the design of instruments for lander missions. Contrary to earlier expectations, evidence appears to be accumulating that even sub-kilometer asteroids often have a significant thermally-insulating surface layer. Recent results from thermal-infrared investigations of NEOs are reviewed and implications for the surface properties of small asteroids discussed.

M32 and other compact dwarf galaxies present interesting evolutionary puzzles. Why are most dwarf galaxies low density systems while a very few, like M32, have the highest stellar densities of any galaxies? We suggest that gas capture should be added to the tidal stirring mix as a way to make high density M32-type dwarfs starting with relatively ordinary satellite galaxies. This paper presents some of the basic features and issue associated with gas capture models.

We report here and use the results of a set of three-dimensional SPH/Treecode simulations which model the formation and early evolution of disk galaxies, including the generation of heavy elements by star formation, to investigate the effects of dust absorption in quasar absorption line systems. Using a simple prescription for the production of dust, we have compared the column density, zinc abundance, and optical depth properties of our models to the known properties of damped Lyman alpha systems. We find that a significant fraction of our model galaxy disks have a higher column density than any observed DLA system. We are also able to show that such parts of the disk tend to be optically thick, implying that any background quasar would be obscured through much of the disk. This would produce the selection effect against the denser absorption systems thought to be present in observations.

Verification of theoretical predictions of an oscillating behavior of the fine-structure constant, $\alpha$, with cosmic time requires high precision measurements at individual redshifts, while in earlier studies the mean $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$ values averaged over wide redshift intervals were usually reported. This requirement can be met via the Single Ion Differential $\alpha$ Measurement (SIDAM) procedure. We apply SIDAM to the FeII lines associated with the damped Ly$\alpha$ system observed at $z = 1.15$ in the spectrum of HE0515–4414. The weighted mean calculated on the base of carefully selected 34 FeII pairs is $\langle \Delta\alpha/\alpha \rangle = (-0.07\,{\pm}\,0.84)\times10^{-6}$. The precision of this estimate represents a large improvement over previous measurements of $\Delta\alpha/\alpha$.

Observations of CO can provide constraints on the density and temperature of the dense star-forming gas in galaxies, while observations of [CI] trace photon-dominated regions and provide information on the amount of atomic carbon in molecular clouds. In this paper, I review CO and [CI] observations of nearby galaxies, with an emphasis on galaxies for which high-resolution observations of multiple transitions and isotopologues are available. I also briefly discuss upper limits on water emission from nearby starburst galaxies and on O2 emission in the SMC obtained with the Odin satellite.

Searching for objects in the earliest phases of star formation, e.g sources at the beginning of a gravitational collapse, are essential to our understanding of massive star formation. Today a number of precursors of ultra compact HII regions (PUCHs) have been found. Embedded in dense gas and dust, these PUCHs have a high bolometric luminosity but little or no 6 cm radio continuum emission (Molinari, et al. 2000; Beuther, et al. 2002). Evidence for Collapse was found in ultra compact (UC) HII regions and 12 water maser sources (Zhang, et al. 1998; Wu & Evans II 2003). This paper presents the identification of massive cores with no detectable infrared and radio sources. These kinds of cores usually have strong sub-mm emission. A special case is the SCUBA core JCMT 18354-0649S which has both infall and outflow motions as indicated by the profiles of high excitation molecular lines. This core is at a stage earlier than PUCHs. Blue profiles are also found in UC HII region, which indicates that material is still infalling in this phase. Our observations suggest that infall exists in different evolutionary stages for high mass star formation, similar to the low mass cases.

Radial velocity surveys provide evidence that giant extrasolar planets are common, but their detection space is limited to only a few astronomical units from the stars. In order to close this gap, the adaptive optics assisted NIR imager NAOS-CONICA (NACO) at the VLT was used for a deep (15-20 minutes exposure time per target) L-band survey of a sample of closeby young stars. All stars are members of the Tucana and $\beta$ Pictoris moving groups apart from the the somewhat older star HIP 71395 that has a radial velocity trend suggesting a massive planet in large orbit. The chosen observation wavelength is very well suited for very high contrast imaging of close companions at this age and makes this survey unique. The goal was to detect substellar companions to these stars at distances as close as 5-20 AU and ultimately to detect giant extrasolar planets down to a few Jupiter masses, to measure their frequency, and - by comparison with models - determine their physical properties. This paper presents the results obtained on a subsample of 12 stars that have been observed during ESO P73.
