Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio galaxies are generally thought to be the young counterparts of classical extended radio sources and live in massive ellipticals. GPS sources are vital for studying the early evolution of radio-loud AGN, the trigger of their nuclear activity, and the importance of feedback in galaxy evolution. We study the Parkes half-Jansky sample of GPS radio galaxies of which now all host galaxies have been identified and 80% has their redshifts determined (0.122 < z < 1.539). Analysis of the absolute magnitudes of the GPS host galaxies show that at z > 1 they are on average a magnitude fainter than classical 3C radio galaxies. This suggests that the AGN in young radio galaxies have not yet much influenced the overall properties of the host galaxy. However their restframe UV luminosities indicate that there is a low level of excess as compared to passive evolution models.

The Gaia satellite, an ESA cornerstone mission to be launched at the end of the year 2011, will observe a large number of celestial bodies including also small bodies of the solar system. Albeit spread from the inner to the outer regions of the solar system, these are mainly near-Earth objects and main-belt asteroids. All objects brighter than magnitude V ≤ 20 that cross the field of view (i.e. with solar elongation 45° ≤ L ≤ 135°) of the survey-mode scanning telescope will be observed. The mission will provide, over its 5 years duration, high precision photometry and astrometry with an unprecedented accuracy ranging roughly from 0.3 to 3 milli-arcsecond on the CCD level, and depending on the target's magnitude. In addition, several hundreds of QSOs directly observed by Gaia will provide the kinematically non-rotating reference frame in the visible light, resulting in the construction of a ‘Gaia-ICRF’.

The positions of the asteroids hence enable to relate the dynamical reference frame—as defined by the equations of motion—to the kinematic one, and to further check the non-rotating consistency between both frames' definition. Here we show the results of a variance analysis obtained from a realistic simulation of observations for such a link. The simulation takes into account the time sequences and geometry of the observations that are particular to Gaia observations of solar system objects, as well as the instrument sensitivity and photon noise. Additionally, we show the achievable precision for the determination of a possible time variation of the gravitational constant Ġ/G. Taking into account the non-completeness of the actually known population of NEOs, we also give updated values for the nominal precision of the joint determination of the solar quadrupole J2 and PPN parameter β.

Based on a 15–20 year long monitoring program of H2O masers and new observations of OH masers discovered 35 years ago, we studied the variability of maser emission in AGB stars over timescales of decades. The H2O maser features in the semi-regular variable stars RX Boo and SV Peg, and of the Mira stars U Her and R Cas, showed strong fluctuations superposed in case of the Mira stars on regular variations due to the pulsation of the stars. The spatial distribution of the emission regions in RX Boo and U Her showed deviations from spherical symmetry, which remained unchanged over >10 years. We conclude that the spatial asymmetry is determined by the underlying asymmetry of the mass loss process. There is no evidence that mass loss rates or the wind geometry in these stars have varied over the last 20 years. In 2005 we re-detected at 1612 MHz the 114 OH/IR stars discovered before 1978, implying an OH maser lifetime of >2800 years (1σ).

We perform numerical simulations to study the Habitable zones (HZs) and dynamical structure for Earth-mass planets in multiple planetary systems. For example, in the HD 69830 system, we extensively explore the planetary configuration of three Neptune-mass companions with one massive terrestrial planet residing in 0.07 AU ≤ a ≤ 1.20 AU, to examine the asteroid structure in this system. We underline that there are stable zones of at least 105 yr for low-mass terrestrial planets locating between 0.3 and 0.5 AU, and 0.8 and 1.2 AU with final eccentricities of e < 0.20. Moreover, we also find that the accumulation or depletion of the asteroid belt are also shaped by orbital resonances of the outer planets, for example, the asteroidal gaps at 2:1 and 3:2 mean motion resonances (MMRs) with Planet C, and 5:2 and 1:2 MMRs with Planet D. In a dynamical sense, the proper candidate regions for the existence of the potential terrestrial planets or HZs are 0.35 AU < a < 0.50 AU, and 0.80 AU < a < 1.00 AU for relatively low eccentricities, which makes sense to have the possible asteroidal structure in this system.

As a result of the triennial reviews by the IAU Division presidents of their Commissions and Working Groups (Bye-Laws § V), the following structural changes have been proposed and approved by the Executive Committee.

Absorption in the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei from outflowing gas can be modeled to yield critical physical information on the outflows. The outflow rate of mass ejected back into the ISM of the host galaxy and the resulting feedback could potentially have an impact on evolution. We give a brief overview of the current observational constraints on the outflows that should be taken into account by models of evolution and feedback.

Globular clusters (GCs) are rich of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and might also host single or binary intermediate–mass black holes (IMBHs). We simulate 3- and 4-body encounters in order to test the possibility that an IMBH captures a MSP. The newly formed system could be revealed from the timing signal of the MSP, providing an unambiguous measure of the BH mass. In current surveys, the number of expected [IMBH,MSP] binaries in the Milky Way is ~0.1. If next-generation radio telescopes (e.g. SKA) will detect ~10 times more MSPs in GCs, we expect to observe at least one [IMBH,MSP] binary.

ISO mid-infrared absorption data helps to distinguish between radiative and collisional pumping mechanisms in 1612 MHz OH masers in various environments. Archive data of OH absorption at 34.6 and 53.3μm shows different behavior and different pumping rates for different types of maser sources.

The unexpected diversity of exoplanets includes a growing number of super-Earth planets, i.e., exoplanets with masses smaller than 10 Earth masses. Unlike the larger exoplanets previously found, these smaller planets are more likely to have similar chemical and mineralogical composition to the Earth. We present a thermal evolution model for super-Earth planets to identify the sources and sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The photosynthesis-sustaining habitable zone (pHZ) is determined by the limits of biological productivity on the planetary surface. We apply our model to calculate the habitability of the two super-Earths in the Gliese 581 system. The super-Earth Gl 581c is clearly outside the pHZ, while Gl 581d is at the outer edge of the pHZ. Therefore, it could at least harbor some primitive forms of life.

Gaia is an ESA space astrometry mission due for launch in 2011–12. We describe part of the work carried out in the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium, namely the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution (AGIS) currently being implemented at the European Space Astronomy Center (ESAC) in Spain and largely based on algorithms developed at Lund Observatory. Some provisional results based on simulated observations of one million stars are presented, demonstrating convergence at microarcsec level independent of initial conditions.

We present an analysis of our deep far- (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) photometry of the core region of the dense globular cluster M 15. Our FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) is the deepest one presented for a globular cluster so far, and shows all hot stellar populations expected in a globular cluster, such as horizontal branch stars, blue stragglers, white dwarfs, cataclysmic variables and even main sequence stars. The main sequence turn-off is clearly visible and the main sequence stars form a prominent track that extends at least two magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off. We compare and discuss the radial distribution of the various stellar populations that show up in the FUV. We search for variability amongst our FUV sources and tentatively classify our variable candidates based on an analysis of the UV colours and variability properties. We find that RR Lyraes, Cepheids, and SX Phoenicis exhibit massive variability amplitudes in this waveband (several mags).

We show a phase-referenced image of the SiO maser emissions towards the Mira variable R Aqr. These data have been obtained using the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). The proper motion we have obtained is different from that obtained using the HST. The proper motion from 2004 to 2005 is not different from that of 1991 to 2005 and supports the current orbital elements.

Nano-JASMINE is a nano-size astrometry satellite that will carry out astrometry measurements of nearby bright stars for more than one year. This will enable us to detect annual parallaxes of stars within 300 pc from the Sun. We expect the satellite to be launched as a piggy-back system as early as in 2009 into a Sun synchronized orbit at the altitude between 500 and 800 km. Being equipped with a beam combiner, the satellite has a capability to observe two different fields simultaneously and will be able to carry out HIPPARCOS-type observations along great circles. A 5 cm all aluminum made reflecting telescope with a aluminum beam combiner is developed. Using the on-board CCD controller, experiments with a real star have been executed. A communication band width is insufficient to transfer all imaging data, hence, we developed an onboard data processing system that extracts stellar image data from vast amount of imaging data. A newly developed 2K × 1K fully-depleted CCD will be used for the mission. It will work in the time delayed integration(TDI) mode. The bus system has been designed with special consideration of the following two points. Those are the thermal stabilization of the telescope and the accuracy of the altitude control. The former is essential to achieve high astrometric accuracies, on the order of 1 mas. Therefore relative angle of the beam combiner must be stable within 1 mas. A 3-axes control of the satellite will be realized by using fiber gyro and triaxial reaction wheel system and careful treatment of various disturbing forces.

About half of all known stellar systems with Sun-like stars consist of two or more stars, significantly affecting the orbital stability of any planet in these systems. This observational evidence has prompted a large array of theoretical research, including the derivation of mathematically stringent criteria for the orbital stability of planets in stellar binary systems, valid for the “coplanar circular restricted three-body problem”. In the following, we use these criteria to explore the validity of results from previous theoretical studies.

We discuss some recent integral field spectroscopy using the SAURON instrument of a sample consisting of 24 early-type spirals, part of the SAURON Survey, and 18 late-type spirals. Using 2-dimensional maps of their stellar radial velocity, velocity dispersion, and absorption line strength, it is now much easier to understand the nature of nearby galactic bulges. We discuss a few highlights of this work, and point out some new ideas about the formation of galactic bulges.

Multi-planet systems detected until now are in most cases characterized by hot-Jupiters close to their central star as well as high eccentricities. As a consequence, from a dynamical point of view, compact multi-planetary systems form a variety of the general N-body problem (with N ≥ 3), whose solutions are not necessarily known. Extrasolar planets are up to now found in prograde (i.e. direct) orbital motions about their host star and often in mean-motion resonances (MMR). In the present paper, we investigate a theoretical alternative suitable for the stability of compact multi-planetary systems. When the outer planet moves on a retrograde orbit in MMR with respect to the inner planet, we find that the so-called retrograde resonances present fine and characteristic structures particularly relevant for dynamical stability. We show that retrograde resonances and their resources open a family of stabilizing mechanisms involving specific behaviors of apsidal precessions. We also point up that for particular orbital data, retrograde MMRs may provide more robust stability compared to the corresponding prograde MMRs.

Panoramic spectroscopy of the sample of 80 nearby lenticular galaxies is presented. The SSP-equivalent ages, [Z/H], and [Mg/Fe] are determined through the Lick indices Hβ, Mgb, and 〈Fe〉 separately for the nuclei and for the bulges. About a half of the sample contain chemically distinct nuclei, more metal-rich and younger than the bulges. The statistics of stellar population properties for the nearby S0s is discussed.

The morphological evolution of stars from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) to the planetary nebula (PN) phases presents an intriguing problem in stellar research. Planetary nebulae show bright-rims, well-defined shell-like structures and a large proportion of them are axisymmetric. In contrast their progenitor AGB stars are largely spherically symmetric (Sahai, 2004). Studies of proto-planetary nebulae, which are objects in transition between these two phases of stellar evolution, offer insight into the mechanisms which are responsible for the onset of axisymmetry. This poster presents the first polarization VLBI observations of the 1612 MHz OH maser emission from the proto-planetary nebula candidate OH O.9+1.3. The morphology, kinematics and polarization properties of these masers are discussed.
