Comparing proper motions of the FK5 and Hipparcos, several authors declared that the two proper-motion systems are inconsistent with the value of the precession correction obtained from VLBI and LLR observations. Based on the proper-motion data from the PPM and ACRS catalogues which are constructed on the FK5 system, the inconsistent values of the precessional correction and of the time-dependent term of equinox correction, derived from the different subsets of stellar samples, have been found. One of the reasons for those discrepancies should be mostly due to the internally biased proper-motion system of the FK5.

We present new results on the dynamical evolution and dissolution of star clusters due to residual gas expulsion and the effect this has on the mass function and other properties of star cluster systems. To this end, we have carried out a large set of N-body simulations, varying the star formation efficiency, gas expulsion time scale and strength of the external tidal field, obtaining a three-dimensional grid of models which can be used to predict the evolution of individual star clusters or whole star cluster systems by interpolating between our runs. When applied to the Milky Way globular cluster system, we find that gas expulsion is the main dissolution mechanism for star clusters, destroying about 80% of all clusters within a few 10s of Myers. Together with later dynamical evolution, it seems possible to turn an initial power-law mass function into a log-normal one with properties similar to what has been observed for the Milky Way globular clusters.

Studies of stellar magnetism at the pre-main sequence phase can provide important new insights into the detailed physics of the late stages of star formation, and into the observed properties of main sequence stars. This is especially true at intermediate stellar masses, where magnetic fields are strong and globally organised, and therefore most amenable to direct study. This talk reviews recent high-precision ESPaDOnS observations of pre-main sequence Herbig Ae-Be stars, which are yielding qualitatively new information about intermediate-mass stars: the origin and evolution of their magnetic fields, the role of magnetic fields in generating their spectroscopic activity and in mediating accretion in their late formative stages, and the factors influencing their rotational angular momentum.

Magneto-hydrodynamic wave modes propagating from the solar photosphere into the corona have the potential to be exploited as an observational tool in an analogous way to the use of acoustic waves in helio/terrestrial seismology. In regions of strong magnetic field photospheric p-modes are thought to undergo mode conversion to slow magneto-acoustic waves, and that these slow magnetoacoustic p-modes may be waveguided from the photosphere into the solar corona along the magnetic field. A Bayesian analysis technique is applied to observations which suggests four distinct p-modes may be resolved in the transition region.

Gravitational microlensing observations will lead to a census of planets that orbit stars of different populations. From 2008, ARTEMiS will provide an expert system that allows to adopt a three-step strategy of survey, follow-up and anomaly monitoring of gravitational microlensing events that is capable of detecting planets of Earth mass and below. The SIGNALMEN anomaly detector, an integral part, has already demonstrated its performance during a pilot season. Embedded into eSTAR, ARTEMiS serves as an open platform that links with existing microlensing campaigns. Real-time visualization of ongoing events along with an interpretation moreover allows to communicate “Science live to your home” to the general public.

A review of recent progress relating to Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars is presented. Topics include improved Milky Way statistics from near-IR surveys, different flavours of hydrogen-rich and hydrogen-poor WN stars, WR masses from binary orbits, plus spectroscopic analysis of WR stars resulting in stellar temperatures, luminosities, ionizing fluxes, plus wind properties accounting for clumping. Chemical abundances of WN and WC stars are presented, including a discussion of neon abundances in WC and WO stars from Spitzer observations. Empirical evidence supporting metallicity-dependent winds is also presented, including its effect on subtype distributions in different environments. Finally, difficulties in comparisons between evolutionary models and observations are highlighted, plus outstanding issues with predictions from continuous star formation and instantaneous bursts in the Milky Way,

We simulate the formation and evolution of galaxies with a hydrodynamical model including supernova and hypernova feedback. The large contribution of hypernovae is required from the observed abundance ratios in the Milky Way Galaxy. The hypernova feedback suppress star formation efficiently, which results in the cosmic star formation rate history peaked at z ~ 4. It also drives galactic outflows efficiently in low mass galaxies, and these winds eject heavy elements into the intergalactic medium. The ejected baryon and metal fraction is larger for less massive galaxies, which results in the mass-metallicity relation of galaxies. We also simulate the chemodynamical evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy, and show the difference of the stellar populations in the bulge and disk.

We consider the propagation of spectral-line radiation in a correlated turbulent atmosphere. The ensembles of turbulent velocities u(r,t) and optical depths, τν, are assumed to be Gaussian. We investigate the explicit analytical solution of the stochastic radiative transfer equation for the intensity Iν of radiation. The scattering term is not taken into account. It is shown that, in addition to the usual Doppler broadening of the spectral line, correlated turbulent motions of atoms and molecules give rise to considerable changes in the shape of a spectral line. We find that the mean intensity I(0)ν (Iν=I(0)ν+I′ν, I′ν = 0) obeys the usual radiative transfer equation with renormalized extinction factor αeffν if the correlation length R0 of the turbulence is small as compared to a photon free path. A simple analytical expression for αeffν is given. This expression integrally depends on the two-point correlation function of the turbulent velocity field.

We review our attempts to discover lost baryons at low redshift with the “X-ray forest” of absorption lines from the warm-hot intergalactic medium. We discuss the best evidence to date along the Mrk 421 sightline. We then discuss the missing baryons in the Local Group and the significance of the z = 0 absorption systems in X-ray spectra. We argue that the debate over the Galactic vs. extragalactic origin of the z = 0 systems is premature as these systems likely contain both components. Observations with next generation X-ray missions such as Constellation-X and XEUS will be crucial to map out the warm-hot intergalactic medium.

Class I methanol masers are found near regions of high-mass star formation and are pumped by collisions. Some indication of long-term variability in these masers has previously been reported (Kurtz et al. 2004). Here we will present evidence for variations in the intensity of the Class I methanol masers at 44 GHz on much shorter timescales. We present preliminary results of the observation of the 44 GHz Class I methanol transition toward sources in the DR21 region that indicates variability on timescales of days to possibly hours.

The nature of dark matter is one of the outstanding questions of astrophysics. The internal motions of member stars reveal that the lowest luminosity galaxies in the Local Group are the most dark-matter dominated. New large datasets allow one to go further, and determine systematic properties of their dark matter haloes. We summarise recent results, emphasising the critical role of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies in understanding both dark matter and baryonic processes that shape galaxy evolution.

NMAGIC is a parallel implementation of our made-to-measure (χ2M2M) algorithm for constructing N-particle models of stellar systems from observational data, which extends earlier ideas by Syer & Tremaine (1996). The χ2M2M algorithm properly accounts for observational errors, is flexible, and can be applied to various systems and geometries. We show its ability to reproduce the internal dynamics of an oblate isotropic rotator model and report on the modeling of the dark matter (DM) halo of NGC 3379 combining SAURON and PN.S kinematic data. The χ2M2M algorithm is practical, reliable and can be applied to various dynamical systems without symmetry restrictions. We conclude that χ2M2M holds great promise for unraveling the internal dynamics of bulges.

We present a parameter study of WR-type mass loss, based on the PoWR hydrodynamic model atmospheres. These new models imply that optically thick WR-type winds are generally formed close to the Eddington limit. This is demonstrated for the case of hydrogen rich WNL stars, which turn out to be extremely massive, luminous stars with progenitor masses above ≈ 80 M⊙. We investigate the dependence of WR-type mass loss on various stellar parameters, including the metallicity Z. The results depend strongly on the L/M ratio, the stellar temperature T*, and the assumed wind clumping. For high L/M ratios, strong WR-type winds can be maintained down to very low Z. Even for primordial massive stars we predict considerable mass loss if their surfaces are self-enriched by primary elements.

We present our ongoing survey of ∼1000 GK-giants with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope in search for planets around evolved stars. The stars selected for this survey are brighter than 11 mag and are located in the section of the HR-diagram, which is approximately delimited by the main sequence, the instability strip, and the coronal dividing line. We use the High Resolution Spectrograph to obtain stellar spectra for radial velocity measurements with a 4-6 m s−1 precision. So far, the survey has discovered a planetary-mass companion to the K0-giant HD 17092, and it has produced a number of plausible planet candidates around other stars. Together with other similar efforts, our program provides information on planet formation around intermediate mass main sequence-progenitors and it will create the experimental basis with which to study dynamics of planetary systems around evolving stars.

Our present understanding of the coronal structure of T Tauri stars is fragmentary and observations in different wavelength regimes often appear to give contradictory results. X-ray data suggest the presence of magnetic loops on a variety of scales, from compact loops of size less than a stellar radius, up to very large loops of up to 10 stellar radii which may connect to the disk. While some stars show a clear rotational modulation in X-rays, implying distinct bright and dark regions, many do not. This picture is complicated by the accretion process itself, which also contributes to the X-ray emission. The location of the inner edge of the accretion disk and the nature of the magnetic field there are still hotly-contested issues. Accretion indicators often suggest the presence of discrete accretion funnels. This has implications for the structure of the corona, as does the presence of an outflowing wind. All of these factors are linked to the structure of the magnetic field, which we are now beginning to unravel through Zeeman-Doppler imaging. In this review I will describe the present state of our understanding of the magnetic structure of T Tauri coronae and the impact this has during such an early evolutionary stage.

This chapter presents the reports of Business Meeting of IAU Divisions, Commissions, Working Groups and Program Groups, held during the IAU XXVI General Assembly in Prague, 14-25 August 2006. The reports have been written by the out-going presidents and chairpersons.

We seek to clarify the nature of running penumbral (RP) waves: are they chromospheric trans-sunspot waves or a visual pattern of upward-propagating waves? Full Stokes spectropolarimetric time series of the photospheric Sii10827 Å line and the chromospheric Hei10830 Å multiplet were inverted using a Milne-Eddington code. Spatial pixels were paired between the outer umbral/inner penumbral photosphere and the penumbral chromosphere using inclinations retrieved by the inversion and the dual-height pairings of line-of-sight velocity time series were studied for signatures of wave propagation using a Fourier phase difference analysis. The dispersion relation for radiatively cooling acoustic waves, modified to incorporate an inclined propagation direction, fits well the observed phase differences between the pairs of photospheric and chromospheric pixels. We have thus demonstrated that RP waves are in effect low-β slow-mode waves propagating along the magnetic field.

Different types of radiometric observations of planets and spacecraft, as well as optical data used for constructing modern high-precision planet ephemerides are presented. New mass values for planets and asteroids are given. The IAA RAS EPM ephemerides (Ephemerides of Planets and the Moon) are the basis for the Russian “Astronomical Yearbook” and are used in the navigation program “GLONASS” and the cosmic program “Phobos-Grunt”.

Some young star clusters show a degree of mass segregation that is inconsistent with the effects of standard two-body relaxation from an initially unsegregated system without substructure, in virial equilibrium, and it is unclear whether current cluster formation models can account for this degree of initial segregation in clusters of significant mass. We show that mergers of small clumps that are either initially mass segregated, or in which mass segregation can be produced by two-body relaxation before they merge, generically lead to larger systems which inherit the progenitor clumps' segregation. We conclude that clusters formed in this way are naturally mass segregated, accounting for the anomalous observations and suggesting that this process of prompt mass segregation due to initial clumping should be taken into account in models of cluster formation and dynamics.
