At a distance of 77 Mpc, the Ultralumious galaxy Arp 220 is the closest extragalactic equivalent to Galactic hot cores. The low resolution SMA survey showed a highly excited confusion limited spectrum. The new ALMA snapshot spectral scan opens the possibility of chemically resolve the two nuclei at unprecedented sensitivity. When completed, it will be the widest survey ever done towards an extragalactic object. The model of Band 6 and 7 data already shows the chemical similarities between the interacting nuclei which may provide clues on the similar heating sources. Vibrationally excited transitions may be tracing the deeply embedded dust obscured active nuclei and/or hot compact star burst. This vibrational emission is the brightest ever measured in an extragalactic object, and even so compared with Galactic hot cores. In fact, the eastern one is the brightest in such vibrational emission. Water mega-maser emission also points towards a very compact sources likely related to star forming clumps within both Arp 220 nuclei.

Very metal-poor (VMP) stars preserve chemical signatures of early generations of stars, and are crutial to understand the early nucleosynthesis and first stars. Millions of stellar spectra obtained by LAMOST provide an unprecedented chance to enlarge the currently limited VMP star sample. Since 2014, a joint project on searching for VMP stars has been conducted based on the LAMOST survey and Subaru follow-up observations. So far, the project has obtained chemical abundances for about 250 VMP stars and a number of chemically interesting objects, e.g., three ultra metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] ~ − 4.0, a dozen Li-rich VMP stars distributed in a wide range of evolutionary stages. Statistics of the large homogeneous sample of VMP stars will be of great interest and importance to probe the chemical enrichment in the early Galaxy and low-mass star evolution.

Radio observations play a very important role in understanding the structure of the solar atmosphere. In this paper the quiet sun component of the solar radio emission has been investigated using data obtained from the Solar Indices Bulletin, National Geophysical Data Centre. By statistical method, the quiet sun component is estimated for 84 successive basic periods containing three solar rotations each using data obtained at different frequencies. From the quiet sun component we estimate the brightness temperature in each observing frequency.

Solar torsional oscillations are migrating bands of slower and faster than average rotation, which are thought to be related to the Sun’s magnetic cycle. We perform the first long-term study (16 years) of hemispherical asymmetry in solar torsional oscillation velocity using helioseismic data. We explore the spatial and temporal variation of North-South asymmetry using zonal flow velocities obtained from ring diagram analysis of the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) Doppler images. We find a strong correlation between the asymmetries of near-surface torsional oscillation with magnetic flux and sunspot number, with the velocity asymmetry preceding in both the cases. We speculate that the asymmetry in torsional oscillation velocity may help in predicting the hemispherical asymmetry in the sunspot cycle.

We report our investigations on the host galaxy properties of stellar binary black holes (SBBHs) by implementing simple recipes for SBBH formation and merger into cosmological galaxy formation model. If the time delay between SBBH formation and merger ranges from Gyr to the Hubble time, SBBH mergers at redshift z < 0.3 occur preferentially in big galaxies with stellar mass M* > 2 × 1010M⊙ and metallicities Z peaking around ~0.6Z⊙. However, the host galaxy stellar mass distribution of heavy SBBH mergers (with total black hole mass >50M⊙) is bimodal with one peak at ~109M⊙ and the other peak at ~2 × 1010M⊙. The contribution fraction from metal-poor host galaxies (Z < 0.2Z⊙) to heavy mergers is much larger than that to less heavy mergers. If SBBHs were formed in the early universe, their mergers detected at z < 0.3 occur preferentially in even more massive galaxies with M* > 3 × 1010M⊙ and in galaxies with metallicities mostly >0.2Z⊙ and peaking at Z ~ 0.6Z⊙.

The study of astrophysical maser formation provides a useful probe of the chemical composition and physical conditions of the sources they are observed in. This exploration requires continuously solving the SE equations for the populations of the energy levels in search of conditions that will produce an inversion. After evaluation of available implementations applying the Escape Probability approximation, the masers solver was developed to provide an efficient and robust matrix inversion calculation. This open source package is hosted at https://bitbucket.org/ruby_van_rooyen/masers.

As first realised in the late 1980s, methanol masers come in two varieties, termed Class I and Class II. While Class II masers had observationally been extensively studied in the past, until recently relatively little attention was paid to Class I methanol masers due to their low luminosities compared to other maser transitions. In this review, we will focus on the recent progress in our understanding of Class I methanol masers both from an observational and from a theoretical point of view.

The molecular composition of the stellar outflows of AGB stars is determined by the stellar elemental carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratio, together with the physical circumstances in the innermost region of the outflow. Near the stellar surface, thermal equilibrium (TE) can be assumed. This leads to a certain molecular composition with a O- or C-rich signature. However, several molecular species have been detected that are not expected to be present in the inner region under the assumption of TE chemistry. As a solution to explain the presence of these unexpected species, non-equilibrium chemistry in the inner region of the outflow has been proposed. The outflows of AGB stars are generally not spherically symmetric or homogeneous, which influences the penetration of interstellar UV photons throughout the outflow. We investigate the effect of a clumpy, non-homogeneous outflow on the composition of the inner region by introducing a simple porosity formalism in our chemical model.

Beginning in year 2000 the IAU undertook a number of initiatives that changed the Union from being primarily an inward-focused organization whose emphasis was the world of professional astronomy, to being more outward looking in engaging with the public. These initiatives included proposing to the United Nations and then leading the International Year of Astronomy IYA 2009, and the formulation of a Strategic Plan that included creation of the Office of Astronomy for Development. Additional programs are being undertaken by the Union that continue to broaden IAU engagement with the public.

The incoming IAU President, Silvia Torres-Peimbert, welcomed the participants to the Closing Ceremony of the XXIXth General Assembly.

Impulsive solar energetic particle (SEP) events originate from the energy dissipation process in small solar flares. Anomalous abundances in impulsive SEP events provide an evidence on unique, yet unclear, acceleration mechanism. The pattern of heavy-ion enhancements indicates that the temperature of the source plasma that is accelerated is low and not flare-like. We examine the solar source of the 3He-rich SEP event of 2012 November 20 using Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/ Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) images and investigate its thermal variation. The examined event is associated with recurrent coronal jets. The Differential Emission Measure (DEM) analysis is applied to study the temperature evolution/distribution of the source regions. Preliminary results show that the temperature of the associated solar source is ranged between 1.2-3.1 MK.

Milky Way globular clusters are excellent laboratories for stellar population detailed analysis that can be applied to extragalactic environments with the advent of the 40m-class telescopes like the ELT. The globular cluster population traces the early evolution of the Milky Way which is the field of Galactic archaeology. We present our GlObular clusTer Homogeneous Abundance Measurement (GOTHAM) survey. We derived radial velocities, Teff, log(g), [Fe/H], [Mg/Fe] for red giant stars in one third of all Galactic globular clusters that represent well the Milky Way globular cluster system in terms of metallicity, mass, reddening, and distance. Our method is based on low-resolution spectroscopy and is intrinsically reddening free and efficient even for faint stars. Our [Fe/H] determinations agree with high-resolution results to within 0.08 dex. The GOTHAM survey provides a new metallicity scale for Galactic globular clusters with a significant update of metallicities higher than [Fe/H] > -0.7. We show that the trend of [Mg/Fe] with metallicity is not constant as previously found, because now we have more metal-rich clusters. Moreover, peculiar clusters whose [Mg/Fe] does not match Galactic stars for a given metallicity are discussed. We also measured the CaII triplet index for all stars and we show that the different chemical evolution of Milky Way open clusters, field stars, and globular clusters implies different calibrations of calcium triplet to metallicity.

This paper details on the discovery of 21 pulsars using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) from targeted (Fermi directed search) and blind surveys (GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky - GHRSS) and results from the follow up studies. We discovered seven millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the Fermi directed searches, which are the first Galactic MSPs discovered with the GMRT. We have discovered 13 pulsars (including a MSP and two mildly recycled pulsars) with the GHRSS survey, which is an off-Galactic-plane survey at 322 MHz with complementary target sky (declination range −40 deg to −54 deg) to other ongoing low-frequency surveys by GBT and LOFAR. The simultaneous time-domain and imaging study for localising pulsars and transients and efficient candidate investigation with machine learning are some of the features of the GHRSS survey, which are also finding application in the SKA design methodology.

Recent helioseismic estimates of the deep solar meridional flow have been contradictory. Using two years worth of GONG data, I show here that the detection of the meridional flow is ambiguous below about 0.85 solar radii.

We present a critical reanalysis of the black-hole binary coalescences detected during LIGO’s first observing run under different Bayesian prior assumptions. We summarize the main findings of Vitale et al. (2017) and show additional marginalized posterior distributions for some of the binaries’ intrinsic parameters.

These findings were presented at IAU Symposium 338, held on October 16-19, 2017 in Baton Rouge, LA, USA.

Blazar OJ287 exhibits large thermal flares at least twice every 12 years. The times of these flares have been predicted successfully using the model of a quasi-Keplerian eccentric black hole binary where the secondary impacts the accretion disk of the primary, creating the thermal flares. New measurements of the historical light curve have been combined with the observations of the 2015 November/December flare to identify the impact record since year 1886, and to constrain the orbit of the binary. The orbital solution shows that the binary period, now 12.062 years, is decreasing at the rate of 36 days per century. This corresponds to an energy loss to gravitational waves that is 6.5 ± 4 % less than the rate predicted by the standard quadrupolar gravitational wave (GW) emission. We show that the difference is due to higher order gravitational radiation reaction terms that include the dominant order tail contributions.

Since the launch of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in 2008, the onboard Large Area Telescope (LAT) has detected gamma-ray pulsations from more than 200 pulsars. A large fraction of these remain undetected in radio observations, and could only be found by directly searching the LAT data for pulsations. However, the sensitivity of such “blind” searches is limited by the sparse photon data and vast computational requirements. In this contribution we present the latest large-scale blind-search survey for gamma-ray pulsars, which ran on the distributed volunteer computing system, Einstein@Home, and discovered 19 new gamma-ray pulsars. We explain how recent improvements to search techniques and LAT data reconstruction have boosted the sensitivity of blind searches, and present highlights from the survey’s discoveries. These include: two glitching pulsars; the youngest known radio-quiet gamma-ray pulsar; and two isolated millisecond pulsars (MSPs), one of which is the only known radio-quiet rotationally powered MSP.

Massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) show infrared absorption features corresponding to significant abundances of CO, CO2 and H2O ice along the line of sight, with the relative abundances of these ices varying between sources in the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way. We use our gas-grain chemical code MAGICKAL, with multiple grain sizes and grain temperatures, and further expand it with a treatment for increased interstellar radiation field intensity to model the elevated dust temperatures observed in the MCs. We also adjust the elemental abundances used in the chemical models, guided by observations of HII regions in these metal-poor satellite galaxies. With a grid of models, we are able to reproduce the relative ice fractions observed in MC MYSOs, indicating that metal depletion and elevated grain temperature are important drivers of the MYSO envelope ice composition. The observed shortfall in CO in the Small Magellanic Cloud can be explained by a combination of reduced carbon abundance and increased grain temperatures. The models indicate that a large variation in radiation field strength is required to match the range of observed LMC abundances.

In this paper, we investigate the inhomogeneous spatial distribution of solar faculae. The focus is on the latitudinal and longitudinal distributions of these highly localised features covering ubiquitously the solar surface. The statistical analysis is based on white light observations of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) between 1996 and 2014. We found that the fine structure of the latitudinal distribution of faculae displays a quasi-biennial oscillatory pattern. Furthermore, the longitudinal distribution of photospheric solar faculae does not show homogeneous behaviour either. In particular, the non-axisymmetric behaviour of these events show similar properties as that of the active longitude (AL) found in the distribution of sunspots. Our results, preliminary though, may provide a valuable observational constrain for developing the next-generation solar dynamo model.
