The past century has seen massive improvements in the study of galaxy kinematics. While early work focused on single nearby galaxies, current studies with modern IFUs and interferometers (e.g., SINFONI, ALMA) allow for extension of this field to high redshift. However, the sample of galaxy observations at z > 4 that feature the sensitivity and resolution required for resolved dynamical characterization has been small. The ALMA Large Program to INvestigate CII at Early times (ALPINE) targeted 118 star-forming galaxies at z = 4–6, representing a vast increase in the sample size of potentially dynamically-characterizable sources. Using a set of diagnostic plots, we are able to characterize roughly half the sample, revealing a vast kinematic diversity and high merger rate. For the nine targets that show rotational signatures, initial tilted ring fitting with 3DBarolo shows promise. With further observations (e.g., ALMA, NOEMA, MUSE), the true nature of each source will be revealed in unprecedented detail.

Although it is well understood that supermassive black holes are found in essentially all galaxies, the mechanisms by which they initially form remain highly uncertain, despite the importance that the formation pathway can have on AGN and quasar behaviour at all redshifts. Using a post-processing analysis method combining cosmological simulations and analytic modeling, I will discuss how varying the conditions for formation of supermassive black hole seeds leads to changes in AGN populations. Looking at formation via direct collapse or from PopIII remnants, I will discuss the impact on black hole mass and luminosity functions, scaling relations, and black hole mergers, which each have effects at both high- and low-redshifts. In addition to demonstrating the importance of initial seed formation on our understanding of long-term black hole evolution, I will also show that the signatures of seed formation suggest multiple means by which upcoming electromagnetic and GW surveys (at both high- and low-z) can provide the data required to constrain initial supermassive black hole formation.

Interdisciplinary and egalitarian, the School Workshops on Astronomy have been being in their educational mission since 14 years. Here we present the concept, methods, and some example results of that educational technique.

We present a velocity of galactic outflows in star-forming galaxies at the highest redshift, z ∼ 6, so far studied with metal absorption lines. Absorption-line studies of galactic outflows need well-determined redshifts, but there are few strong emission lines in the observed-frame optical spectra of galaxies at high redshifts. In this work, we use the systemic redshifts determined by the ALMA [CII]158 μm emission lines. The sample consists of seven Lyman break galaxies at 5.1 < z < 5.7 whose Keck/DEIMOS and ALMA data are available in the archive. The outflow maximum velocity (νmax) is estimated by a fitting of line profiles to metal absorption lines in a composite spectrum. We find that νmax monotonically increases from z ∼ 0 to 6 and that νmax tightly correlates with the halo circular velocity estimated from the stellar mass.

The desorption of volatile molecules from dust grains in cold dense clouds is crucial for the chemical inventory in the various stages of cloud collapse. In this work we investigate the desorption of N2, CO, CH4 and CO2 from surfaces of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC), which, according to IR observations, is one of the main components of interstellar dust.

Studying the morphology of a large sample of active galaxies at different wavelengths and comparing it with active galactic nuclei (AGN) properties, such as black hole mass (MBH) and Eddington ratio (λEdd), can help us in understanding better the connection between AGN and their host galaxies and the role of nuclear activity in galaxy formation and evolution. By using the BAT-SWIFT hard X-ray public data and by extracting those parameters measured for AGN and by using other public catalogues for parameters such as stellar mass (M*), star formation rate (SFR), bolometric luminosity (Lbol), etc., we studied the multiwavelength morphological properties of host galaxies of ultra-hard X-ray detected AGN and their correlation with other AGN properties. We found that ultra hard X-ray detected AGN can be hosted by all morphological types, but in larger fractions (42%) they seem to be hosted by spirals in optical, to be quiet in radio, and to have compact morphologies in X-rays. When comparing morphologies with other galaxy properties, we found that ultra hard X-ray detected AGN follow previously obtained relations. On the SFR vs. stellar mass diagram, we found that although the majority of sources are located below the main sequence (MS) of star formation (SF), still non-negligible number of sources, with diverse morphologies, is located on and/or above the MS, suggesting that AGN feedback might have more complex influence on the SF in galaxies than simply quenching it, as it was suggested in some of previous studies.

Submillimeter galaxies at redshift z⩾1 show a pronounced [CII]/FIR deficit down to sub-kpc scales; however, the physical origin of this deficit remains poorly understood. We use resolved ALMA observations of the [CII], FIR and CO(3–2) emission in two z = 3 SMGs to distinguish between the different proposed scenarios; the thermal saturation of the [CII] emission is the most likely explanation.

Gas fueling AGN (Active Galaxy Nuclei) is now traceable at high-resolution with ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) and NOEMA (NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array). Dynamical mechanisms are essential to exchange angular momentum and drive the gas to the super-massive black hole. While at 100pc scale, the gas is sometimes stalled in nuclear rings, recent observations reaching 10pc scale (50mas), may bring smoking gun evidence of fueling, within a randomly oriented nuclear gas disk. AGN feedback is also observed, in the form of narrow and collimated molecular outflows, which point towards the radio mode, or entrainment by a radio jet. Precession has been observed in a molecular outflow, indicating the precession of the radio jet. One of the best candidates for precession is the Bardeen-Petterson effect at small scale, which exerts a torque on the accreting material, and produces an extended disk warp. The misalignment between the inner and large-scale disk, enhances the coupling of the AGN feedback, since the jet sweeps a large part of the molecular disk.

SeneSTEM aims to bring Senegalese children and young people into contact with science, and – by extension – with the STEM disciplines (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) in a very accessible and illustrative way. We do this with concrete workshops and experiments, for both teachers and for groups of children and young people. In collaboration with different educational organisations in Senegal, among which the Senegalese Association for the Promotion of Astronomy, SeneSTEM ensures that all layers of the population are enthusiastic about science (education). Special attention is given to motivating girls for scientific careers. SeneSTEM actions are based on an international collaboration partly supported by development funds from the city of Antwerp and the University of Antwerp (Belgium).

Irrespective of whether Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is cored with Supermassive Black Holes (SMBH) or not, there is a general consensus that observations indicate that the AGN plays fundamental role in galaxy evolution. The accretion disc powered fueling of the AGN and counter-feedback on its environment in the form of stress-energy-momentum along the radial component and an associated polodial jets seems viable model. On the theoretical ground there is no unified theory that compromise the observations. But there are pull of such diverse physics simulated to describe the observational works. So, there is unsettled theoretical framework how the activity of the AGN plays role in the evolution of host galaxy. Motivated by this we studied the role of AGN on its host galaxy evolution where General relativistic (GR) Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equation is considered to derive radial pressure that invokes star forming cold gases. Methodologically the central engine of the AGN is considered with SMBH/pseudo-SMBH. Locally, around the AGN, Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter metric is considered that reduces to the Schwarzschoild-de Sitter (SdS) background. Geometrically, a simple spherical geometry is superimposed with central disc structure assumed by cored void mass ablating model. The results of the work indicates that the AGN plays role in galaxy evolution, especially in the nearby environment. Also we report that the adjacent envelope to the AGN seems quiet with no activity in formation.

The dramatic nature and irregular frequency of solar eclipses may have helped trigger the development of human curiosity. If the kind of solar eclipses we experience on Earth are rare within the Universe, human-like curiosity may also be rare.

The rate coefficients, k(T= 11.7 – 64.4 K), for the gas-phase reaction between OH radicals and acetone, CH3C(O) CH3, have been measured using the pulsed CRESU (French acronym for Reaction Kinetics in a Uniform Supersonic Flow) technique, the most suitable one to cool down gases below the freezing point without gas condensation. The experimental k(T) was found to increase as temperature was lowered and is several orders of magnitude higher for low temperature than k(300 K). No pressure dependence of k(20 K) and k(64 K) was observed, while k(50 K) at the largest gas density is twice higher than the average values found at lower gas densities. The obtained values of k(11.7 K) and k(21.1 K) were 2.45’10-10 and 1.39’10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, respectively.

We present a 4.7σ detection of the [OIII] 88 μm line in a gravitationally-lensed Lyman break galaxy, RXC J2248-ID3, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). We did not detect [CII] 158 μm and rest-frame 90 μm dust continuum emission, suggesting that the bulk of the interstellar medium (ISM) is ionized. Our two-component SED model combining the previous Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data and new photometry obtained from Very Large Telescope (VLT), Spitzer and ALMA suggests the presence of young (∼2 Myr) and mature (∼600 Myr) stellar components with the metallicity of Z = 0.2Z⊙. Our findings are in contrast with previous results claiming a very young, metal-poor stellar component.

Density profiles of galaxy groups can provide an insight on how large-scale structure in the Universe formed and evolved, since galaxy groups bridge the gap between individual galaxies and galaxy clusters. Studying the galaxy group that is gravitational lensing HELMS18, a submillimeter galaxy at z = 2.39 from the Herschel’s HerMES Large Mode Survey (HELMS), we aim to probe the total density profile by combining strong gravitational lensing with kinematics of the centrally-located galaxies and kinematics of the group members. We have high-resolution data of HELMS18 obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and multi-object spectroscopic data of the group members from Gemini-GMOS. Our main goal is to match these observations to probe the DM and stellar density profiles and to establish a complete description of this galaxy group.

We investigate the processes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feeding and feedback in the narrow line regions (NLRs) and host galaxies of nearby AGN through spatially resolved spectroscopy with the Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) and the Hubble Space Telescope’s Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). We examine the connection between nuclear and galactic inflows and outflows by adding long-slit spectra of the host galaxies from Apache Point Observatory. We demonstrate that nearby AGN can be fueled by a variety of mechanisms. We find that the NLR kinematics can often be explained by in situ ionization and radiative acceleration of ambient gas, often in the form of dusty molecular spirals that may be the fueling flow to the AGN.

Recent observations of local AGNs have revealed that many of them show a ‘changing look’ behavior at optical and X-rays wavelengths in the sense of transiting between different AGNs families (e.g. from type-1 to type-2 or vice-versa). In order to pinpoint the possible relation of the changes, we performed optical spectroscopic observations (with CAFOS/CAHA) of 15 changing look AGNs selected at X-rays. Highlights from our spectroscopic study are presented.

Recently huge amount of dust Mdust ≃ 106−7M⊙ in galaxies at z = 7–8 has been discovered by ALMA observations. The suggested timescale of the dust production was a few–several×108 yr, while the stellar mass was several × 109M⊙. This amount of dust cannot be easily explained only by a supply from supernovae if we consider the dust destruction by reverse shocks. We propose that these values can be consistently explained if we take into account the grain growth in the interstellar medium (ISM). This scenario successfully reproduces the evolution of the dust mass, as well as the SFR, and stellar mass simultaneously. We conclude that even at such an early epoch of the Universe, the dust grain growth in the ISM plays a significant role in galaxies.

We present 0.″2–0.″4 resolution ALMA images of the submillimeter dust continuum and the CO, H2O, and H2O+ line emission in a z = 3.63 strongly lensed dusty starburst. We construct the lens model for the system with an MCMC technique. While the average magnification for the dust continuum is about 11, the magnification of the line emission varies from 5 to 22 across the source, resolving the source down to sub-kpc scales. The ISM content reveals that it is a pre-coalescence major merger of two ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, both with a large amount of molecular gas reservoir. The approaching galaxy in the south shows no apparent kinematic structure with a half-light radius of 0.4 kpc, while the preceding one resembles a 1.2 kpc rotating disk, separated by a projected distance of 1.3 kpc. The distribution of dust and gas emission suggests a large amount of cold ISM concentrated in the interacting region.

We investigated the interstellar medium (ISM) properties in the central regions of nearby Seyfert galaxies characterised by prominent conical or bi-conical outflows belonging to the MAGNUM survey by exploiting the unprecedented sensitivity, spatial and spectral coverage of the integral field spectrograph MUSE at the Very Large Telescope. We developed a novel approach based on the gas and stars kinematics to disentangle high-velocity gas in the outflow from gas in the disc to spatially track the differences in their ISM properties. This allowed us to reveal the presence of an ionisation structure within the extended outflows that can be interpreted with different photoionisation and shock conditions, and to trace tentative evidence of outflow-induced star formation (“positive” feedback) in a galaxy of the sample, Centaurus A.
