Especially in the upper Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, where stellar physics is least understood, obtaining model independent masses is of great value. Spectroscopic binaries that are also resolved astrometrically are an excellent alternative to eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binaries where dynamical masses can be measured. 9 Sgr is such a massive binary. However, its characterization is troubled by conflicting conclusions from the spectroscopic analysis on the one hand and the interferometric one on the other hand. In this work, we attempt to resolve this tension by applying a novel approach to spectral disentangling of the spectroscopic data to constrain better the mass of 9 Sgr.

In 2020, HR 6819 was reported to be a triple system containing the closest black hole to Earth. However, these results were contested, with an alternative explanation of a post-interaction binary suggested. Using new integral field spectroscopic and interferometric data, we have been able to determine the true nature of this exotic source.

Evolved stars on the asymptotic giant branch and red supergiants have multiple processes that can be studied in the (sub)mm, including stellar surfaces, circumstellar thermal gas and dust, and masers. Telescopes such as APEX and ALMA have opened the possibility to perform studies that are revealing new information on these, as well as on the role of binaries in shaping stellar winds and the evolution to planetary nebulae. Here, we discuss some recent results for (sub)mm observations towards evolved stars focusing particularly on masers. This includes SiO and water masers, as well as ALMA high angular resolution observations of HCN masers towards a carbon-rich star.

Stellar mergers produce more massive, rejuvenated (strongly magnetic) stars, with potentially peculiar properties, and can be detected as luminous red novae. Using a grid of detailed 1D binary evolution models, we aim to determine which binary systems are likely to merge and at what evolutionary stage. This will tell us more about the merger products, and might help us understand some of the trends found in observed single- and multiple-star populations.

Multi-transition SiO maser emission has been detected in over 10 thousand evolved stars across the plane of the Milky Way by the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) survey. In addition to the large source catalog of the survey, the frequency coverage is also unprecedented: the J=1-0 (43 GHz) data cover seven separate transitions of SiO, and the J=2-1 (86 GHz) data cover ten SiO transitions. In contrast, most other SiO maser data only probe the SiO v=1 and v=2 at 43 GHz and/or the v=1 at 86 GHz. Our extended range allows for the derivation of SiO line ratios for a huge population of evolved stars, including those derived from rare transitions associated with 29SiO and 30SiO isotopologues. We examine how these ratios are affected by the specific combinations of transitions that are detected in a single source. Furthermore, we present a class of ‘isotopologue dominated’ sources where the 29SiO transitions are the brightest in the 43 GHz spectrum. Finally, using Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) light curves of our maser stars, changes in line ratios as a function of stellar phase are discussed.

With the upcoming third Gaia data release (DR3), the first Gaia astrometric orbital solutions for binary sources will become available. Potentially, many rarely seen single-degenerate massive binaries with a black hole (OB+BH) will be revealed. Here, we investigate how many OB+BHs are expected to be detected as binaries in Gaia astrometry by using tailored models for the massive star population. We use a method based on the astrometric data to investigate how many OB+BH binaries will be uncovered by Gaia. We estimate that∼200 OB+BHs are detectable among the sources in the second Alma Luminous Star massive star catalogue, either in DR3 or in upcoming data releases. Moreover, we show that BH-formation scenarios could be constrained from the distributions of parameters such as the orbital periods and eccentricities.

We present our past and current long-term monitoring program of water masers in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars, augmented by occasional interferometric observations. Using as example the Mira-variable U Her, we identify three types of variability: periodic (following the optical variation), long-term (years-decades) and short-term irregular (weeks-months). We show there are regions in the maser shell where excitation conditions are favourable, which remain stable for many years. Lifetimes of maser clouds in the wind-acceleration zone are of the order of up to a few years. Much longer lifetimes are found for the peculiar case of a maser cloud outside that zone (as in RT Vir), or in some cases where the motion of spectral features can be followed for the entire 2 decade monitoring period (as in red supergiant VX Sgr).

We present the results of KVN Key Science Program (KSP) for evolved stars, which was launched in 2014. The first phase of KSP ended in June 2020 and the second phase started in October 2020. The goal of KSP is to study the physical characteristics of the evolved stars by observing the spatial distribution and temporal variability of the stellar masers at four frequency-bands (K, Q, W and D bands). The 22 GHz H2O maser is usually observed from the outer part of circumstellar envelopes compared to the 43, 86, 129 GHz SiO masers, thus the kinematic links between these regions can be studied by the multi-frequency simultaneous observations of KSP along the stellar pulsation cycles. This eventually enable us to study the enormous mass-loss rate of evolved stars, and the accumulated results from KSP are expected to shed light on the study of the late stage of the stellar evolution.

The study of the multiplicity of massive stars gives hints of their formation processes and their evolution path. Optical interferometry is mandatory to fulfill our knowledge of their multiplicity by probing the separation gap between 1 and 50 mas. We demonstrated the capability of the new interferometric instrument MIRC-X, located at the CHARA array, to study a large sample of more than 120 (H < 7.5) O-type stars. We observed 29 O-type star systems, including a couple of systems in average atmospheric conditions around a magnitude of H = 7.5. Out of these 29 systems, we detected 18 companions in 16 different systems, resulting in a multiplicity fraction fm = 16/29 = 0.55, and a companion fraction of fc = 18/29 = 0.62. We observed for the first time 11 of these detected companions. This study concludes that a large survey on more than 120 Northern O-type stars is possible with MIRC-X.

We report VLBI monitoring observations of the 22 GHz H2O masers toward the Mira variable BX Cam. Data from 37 epochs spanning ∼3 stellar pulsation periods were obtained between May 2018 and June 2021 with a time interval of 3–4 weeks. In particular, the VERA dual-beam system was used to measure the kinematics and parallaxes of the H2O maser features. The obtained parallax, 1.79±0.08 mas, is consistent with Gaia EDR3 and previous VLBI measurements. The position of the central star was estimated relied on Gaia EDR3 data and the center position of the 43 GHz SiO maser ring imaged with KVN. Analysis of the 3D maser kinematics revealed an expanding circumstellar envelope with a velocity of 13±4 km s−1 and significant spatial and velocity asymmetries. The H2O maser animation achieved by our dense monitoring program manifests the propagation of shock waves in the circumstellar envelope of BX Cam.

Some Be stars were found to emit very bright and extremely hard thermal X-rays. This so-called γ Cas -star category is rapidly growing, showing that the phenomenon is far from being uncommon and its consequences on Be population feedback should be examined. The origin of this X-ray peculiarity is however much debated. In this contribution, we review the most recent observational clues and derive constraints on the cause of the phenomenon: properties of these stars (multiplicity status, photometric variability), X-ray reaction to disk changes, impact of stripped-star companions on the X-ray emission,…

We present the results of our long-term RTT-150 photometric and spectroscopic observations Be optical counterpart of the High-mass X-ray binary IGR J21343+4738.

We have investigated the spectral evolutions of H2O and SiO masers associated with 12 “water fountain” sources in our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. Our monitoring observations have been conducted using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope every 2 weeks–2 months since 2018 December except during summer seasons. We have found new extremely high velocity H2O maser components, breaking the records of jet speeds in this type of sources. Systematic line-of-sight velocity drifts of the H2O maser spectral peaks have also been found, indicating acceleration of the entrained material hosting the masers around the jet. Moreover, by comparing with previous spectral data, we can find decadal growths/decays of H2O maser emission. Possible periodic variations of the maser spectra are further being inspected in order to explore the periodicity of the central stellar system (a pulsating star or a binary). Thus we expect to see the real-time evolution/devolutions of the water fountains over decades.

We present the spectral and spatial evolution of H2O masers associated with IRAS 18043–2116, a well-known water fountain hosting a high-velocity collimated jet, which has been found in the observations with the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We found new highest velocity components of the H2O masers, with which the resulting velocity spread of ≃ 540 km s−1 breaks the speed record of fast jets/outflows in this type of sources.

A detailed X-ray study of a massive binary called HD 93205 has been made using long-term XMM-Newton observations. The X-ray spectrum of HD 93205 displays negligible counts above 5 keV. The two thermal plasma emission models with average temperature values as ∼ 0.20 and ∼ 0.60 keV are required to explain the X-ray spectra. The X-ray flux variations in the binary are noticed to be in qualitative agreement with the wind-wind collision model but with a few deviations from the expected 1/D trend (D is the binary separation).

Planetary nebulae (PNe) harbouring masers of H2O (H2OPNe) and/or OH (OHPNe) are thought to be nascent PNe. They are extremely scarce, and so far only eight members are know to date. Here we explain our current effort to identify new H2OPNe and/or OHPNe. We report IRAS 07027–7934 as a new bona fine OHPN. Its 1612 MHz OH spectrum seems to be changing from double- to single-peaked since the redshifted emission has vanished almost completely, and the 1667 MHz OH maser emission has disappeared. For the OHPN Vy 2-2, we found that its central star is unexpectedly carbon (C)-rich, has a low-mass progenitor, and could be a post-common envelope binary system. Moreover, we confirm Vy 2-2 as a nascent PN. We speculate that low-mass C-rich central stars in post-common envelope systems could be a common end of H2OPNe and OHPNe.

Exploring the low-mass end of the companion mass function around massive stars is of crucial importance to constrain massive star formation theories. We present a high-contrast imaging study of 20 O- and early B-type stars in the Scorpius OB1 association. From the analysis of VLT/SPHERE data, we identify a total of 789 sources. The data probe the brown dwarf regime around massive stars, resulting in the discovery of large-separation multiple systems with mass-ratios as low as 0.001 (comparable to Jupiter-Sun mass-ratio).

When low- and intermediate-mass stars pass through the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) they experience dramatic changes in their circumstellar shell (CSE) influenced by their mass loss, the possible presence of a (closeby) companion and the magnetic field. Masers, well spread in this environment, provide a powerful tool to reveal the CSE changes occurring when the stars undergo a transitional phase on the AGB. These can be indirect, via for instance the modification of the pumping conditions or a direct consequence of e.g. a companion and/or of the magnetic field. Evidences of such changes have been observed towards Miras, materialized by strong - both in intensity and degree of polarisation - (OH) flaring events and towards stars believed to be transitioning from the Mira to the OH/IR phase, showing an unusual high degree of polarisation. How OH maser emission can be used as a signpost of transitional phases along the AGB is explored.

We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of the only known eclipsing high mass X-ray binary with a black hole companion, M33 X-7. We obtained the first UV spectra of the system accompanied by X-ray observations, taken at three key orbital phases. We performed a detailed analysis of X-Ray, UV, and archival optical spectra using stellar atmosphere models which shed light on the interaction of the stellar wind with the black hole. Our new analysis suggests a large reduction in component masses compared to previous results. Our one-dimensional calculations confirm that the photoionization by the X-ray radiation can significantly change the ionization structure and diminish the wind accelerations. For this system standard wind-fed accretion scenario alone cannot explain the observed X-ray luminosity, indicating an additional mass overflow towards the black hole. Our evolutionary models suggest that the system is transitioning towards a common envelope stage in which both components merge.

ALMA observations with angular resolution in the range ∼20–200 mas demonstrate that emission at 268.149 and 262.898 GHz in the (0,2,0) and (0,1,0) vibrationally excited states of water are widespread in the inner envelope of O-rich AGB stars and red supergiants. These transitions are either quasi-thermally excited, in which case they can be used to estimate the molecular column density, or show signs of maser emission with a brightness temperature of ∼103–107 K in a few stars. The highest spatial resolution observations probe the inner few stellar radii environment, up to ∼10–12 R* in general, while the mid resolution data probe more thermally excited gas at larger extents. In several stars, high velocity components are observed at 268.149 GHz which may be caused by the kinematic perturbations induced by a companion. Radiative transfer models of water are revisited to specify the physical conditions leading to 268.149 and 262.898 GHz maser excitation.
