Recent simulations of supernova-driven turbulence within the ISM support the existence of a large-scale dynamo. With a growth time of about two hundred million years, the dynamo is quite fast – in contradiction to many assertions in the literature. We here present details on the scaling of the dynamo effect within the simulations and discuss global mean-field models based on the adopted turbulence coefficients. The results are compared to global simulations of the magneto-rotational instability.

We present new developments on the Cosmic–Ray driven, galactic dynamo, modeled by means of direct, resistive CR–MHD simulations, performed with ZEUS and PIERNIK codes. The dynamo action, leading to the amplification of large–scale galactic magnetic fields on galactic rotation timescales, appears as a result of galactic differential rotation, buoyancy of the cosmic ray component and resistive dissipation of small–scale turbulent magnetic fields. Our new results include demonstration of the global–galactic dynamo action driven by Cosmic Rays supplied in supernova remnants. An essential outcome of the new series of global galactic dynamo models is the equipartition of the gas turbulent energy with magnetic field energy and cosmic ray energy, in saturated states of the dynamo on large galactic scales.

Laboratory simulation of interstellar grain processing is a unique tool to better understand the nature and evolution of cosmic dust. In recent years this approach has been crucial to outline a new model of evolution of the aliphatic component of organic matter in the interstellar medium. Here, the results of a recent laboratory research on processing of nano-sized carbon particles by H atoms under simulated dense medium conditions are discussed. The experiments show that the formation of C-H bonds in the aliphatic CH2 and CH3 functional groups does not take place, while the activation of a band at 3.47 μm, due to the C-H stretching vibration of tertiary sp3 carbon atoms, is observed. These results indicate that the assumption about inhibition of aliphatic C-H bond formation in interstellar dense clouds is correct. Moreover, they suggest that carbon grains responsible for the interstellar aliphatic band at 3.4 μm in diffuse regions can contribute to the absorption observed at 3.47 μm in dense clouds.

A wide variety of organic compounds have been found in carbonaceous chondrites and comets, which suggests that extraterrestrial organic compounds could have been an important source of the first terrestrial biosphere. In the Greenberg model, these organic compounds in the small bodies were originally formed in interstellar dusts (ISD) in dense clouds by the action of cosmic rays and ultraviolet light. We irradiated a frozen mixture of methanol, ammonia and water with high-energy heavy ions from an accelerator (“HIMAC” in NIRS, Japan) to simulate the action of cosmic rays in dense clouds. Racemic mixtures of amino acids were detected after hydrolysis of the irradiation products. A mixture of carbon monoxide, ammonia and water also gave such complex amino acid precursors with large molecular weights. When such amino acid precursors were irradiated with circular polarized UV light from a synchrotron, enantiomeric excesses were detected. The yield of amino acids was not largely changed between, before, and after CPL-irradiation. The present results suggest that the seed of homochirality of terrestrial amino acids were originally formed in interstellar space.

The largest magnetic field encountered in the observable Universe can be found in neutron stars, in particular in radio pulsars and magnetars. While recent discoveries have slowly started to blur the distinction between these two classes of highly magnetized neutron stars, it is possible that both types of sources are linked via an evolutionary sequence. Indications for this to be the case are obtained from observations of the spin-evolution of pulsars. It is found that most young pulsars are heading across the top of the main distribution of radio pulsars in the P–Ṗ-diagram, suggesting that at least a sub-class of young pulsars may evolve into objects with magnetar-like magnetic field strengths. Part of this evolutionary sequence could be represented by RRATs which appear to share at least in parts properties with both pulsars and magnetars.

An ongoing search for Zeeman splitting in the 1667 MHz OH megamaser emission from luminous star-forming galaxies has yielded numerous detections. These results, in addition to being the first extragalactic measurement of the Zeeman effect in an emission line, suggest that OH megamasers are excellent extragalactic magnetometers. We review the progress of our survey and discuss future observations.

Large laser sparks created by a single shot of a high-power laser system were used for the laboratory simulation of the chemical consequences of high-energy-density events (lightning, high-velocity impact) in planetary atmospheres, e.g., the early Earth's atmosphere.

I describe various stages of energy flow along an extragalactic jet, which subsequently evolves into an extended lobe which is visible in radio and X-rays. The sizes of the lobes vary from kpc scales to several megaparsec, so that the largest lobes are clearly injecting back hole energy into the IGM on scales comparable with a galaxy-galaxy separation. This is sometimes loosely referred to as Black hole-IGM “feedback”. My talk begins with a well-formed jet, and avoids the complex and unclarified physics at less than a few Schwarzschild radii that cause the initial launching the jet.

This presentation focuses on recent thinking and supercomputer simulations that appear to clarify the fundamental nature of these remarkable jets and lobes. The energy transport process appears to be electrodynamic, rather than particle beam–driven. A new observational verification of a 1018 Ampère current in an actual jet is concordant with the predictions and simulations of poynting flux-dominated electromagnetic jets. In this model the current is tightly related to the BH mass and angular energy.

The magneto-plasma properties of the lobes must obviously match to the jets which feed them. The “energy sink” phase is when BH energy is ultimately deposited on supra-galactic scales. The process from the BH to the lobe production happens with remarkable efficiency. The presence or absence of a galaxy cluster environment creates laboratory conditions that help to calibrate the energy flow paths, and the magnetic rigidity of these jet-lobe systems.

I conclude by describing recent, sensitive radio observations on supra-cluster scales that test for final magnetic energy deposition - the “sink” phase - into the intergalactic medium.

It is important to say that the formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide have been detected in the interstellar medium through resonance spectrum emission. Here I describe a way to produce uracil in interstellar space.

We present radio continuum polarimetry observations of the nearby edge-on galaxy NGC 253 which possesses a very bright radio halo. Using the vertical synchrotron emission profiles and the lifetimes of cosmic-ray electrons, we determined the cosmic-ray bulk speed as 300±30 km s−1, indicating the presence of a galactic wind in this galaxy. The large-scale magnetic field was decomposed into a toroidal axisymmetric component in the disk and a poloidal component in the halo. The poloidal component shows a prominent X-shaped magnetic field structure centered on the nucleus, similar to the magnetic field observed in other edge-on galaxies. Faraday rotation measures indicate that the poloidal field has an odd parity (antisymmetric). NGC 253 offers the possibility to compare the magnetic field structure with models of galactic dynamos and/or galactic wind flows.

The idea that some nitrogen bases, such as adenine and guanine, are easily formed and can be found in interstellar space is should not be rejected. In fact, they have been found in the soluble fraction of some ancient meteors. It is possible that the “seed” of life had its origin in space, and thanks to Earth conditions, a synergistic interaction ocurred and allowed life to spring forth on our planet.

We have several methods of measuring magnetic fields in the Milky Way. We can study optical polarization, radio polarization, rotation measures of pulsars and extragalactic radio sources as well as include Zeeman results. Each of the above mentioned methods was at times used to make a model of the magnetic fields of the Milky Way. However one or two of the data sets by themselves cannot tell us the whole story. Any model of the magnetic fields must be able to fit all the observational results. At the present time a lot of progress has been made. We have increased our data bases in most of the observational areas. However a robust model of the magnetic field of the Milky Way has not yet emerged. We must possibly wait to the era of SKA.

Good evening. I'd like to invite you to join me on a journey that could be entitled “Full Circle: Star Ferry to Stardust”. “Star Ferry” represents Hong Kong, my home town, and especially its university - Hong Kong University - as I knew it during the years of World War II. “Stardust” refers to our gathering here to report on our research on possible organic chemistry in space.

In galaxy clusters, non-thermal components such as magnetic field and high energy particles keep a record of the processes acting since early times till now. These components play key roles by controlling transport processes inside the cluster atmosphere and beyond and therefore have to be understood in detail by means of numerical simulations. The complexity of the intra cluster medium revealed by multi-frequency observations demonstrates that a variety of physical processes are in action and must be included properly to produce accurate and realistic models. Confronting the predictions of numerical simulations with observations allows us to validate different scenarios about origin and evolution of large scale magnetic fields and to investigate their role in transport and acceleration processes of cosmic rays.

There is increasing evidence that intense magnetic fields exist at large redshifts. They could arise after galaxy formation or in very early processes, such as inflation or cosmological phase transitions, or both. Early co-moving magnetic strengths in the range 1-10 nG could be present at recombination. The possibilities to detect them in future CMB experiments are discussed, mainly considering their impact in the anisotropy spectra as a result of Faraday rotation and Alfven waves. Magnetic fields this magnitude could also have a non-negligible influence in determining the filamentary large scale structure of the Universe.

As part of the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) we have imaged the polarized emission from the plane of the Milky Way at 1420 MHz, covering 1200 square degrees with arc-minute resolution. Structure on all scales is represented by combining aperture-synthesis data with single-antenna data. The survey depicts the Magneto-Ionic Medium at a resolution that matches images of other components of the Interstellar Medium within the CGPS database (http://www4.cadc.hia.nrc.gc.ca).

We have measured the emission line profiles in Hα from populations of HII regions in nearby spiral galaxies, and extracted their non-thermal line widths. These are supersonic for the more luminous regions. We infer from plots of line width, σ, against Hα luminosity, a set of regions in virial equilibrium, and derive their masses summing all known components. The virial masses are considerably larger. If this discrepancy, and the supersonic line widths, are due to the presence of magnetic fields, we can estimate their strengths at a few microgauss. Observational confirmation is clearly required.

We present deep observations of polarized radio emission of distant spiral galaxies with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope† at 4.8 GHz. These cross scans with sensitivity of 50 μJy or better open the possibility of a statistical study of magnetic field properties and internal Faraday rotation as a function of inclination for a large sample of unresolved galaxies. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will be able to detect polarization of spiral galaxies to high redshift, probing the evolution of magnetic fields in disk galaxies over cosmic time.

Using high-resolution data of the linearly polarized intensity and polarization angle at 3.6, 6.2, and 20 cm together with a 3-D model of the regular magnetic field, we study variations of the structure, strength, and energy density of the magnetic field in the Scd galaxy M 33. The regular magnetic field consists of a horizontal component (represented by an axisymmetric mode from 1 to 3 kpc radius and a superposition of axisymmetric and bisymmetric modes from 3 to 5 kpc radius) and a vertical component. However, the inferred ‘vertical field’ may be partly due to a galactic warp. We estimate the average total and regular magnetic field strengths as ≃6.4 and 2.5 μG, respectively. Generation of interstellar magnetic fields by turbulent gas motion in M 33 is indicated as the turbulent and magnetic energy densities are about equal.

From our radio observations of the magnetic field strength and large-scale pattern of spiral galaxies of different Hubble types and star formation rates (SFR) we conclude that – though a high SFR in the disk increases the total magnetic field strength in the disk and the halo – the SFR does not change the global field configuration nor influence the global scale heights of the radio emission. The similar scale heights indicate that the total magnetic field regulates the galactic wind velocities. The galactic wind itself may be essential for an effective dynamo action.
