Type Ia supernovae are very good tools for measuring distances on a cosmic scale. The consensus view is that mass transfer onto a white dwarf in a close binary system leads to a thermonuclear explosion, though the nature of the mass donor is still uncertain. In the single-degenerate model it is a main-sequence star or an evolved star. In the double-degenerate model it is another white dwarf. We study the velocity structure of absorbing material along the line of sight to 35 Type Ia supernovae and find a statistical preference for blueshifted structures, likely arising in gas outflows from the supernova progenitor systems, consistent with a single-degenerate progenitor for a substantial fraction of Type Ia supernovae in nearby spiral galaxies.

The past 15 years have seen an explosion in the number of redshifts recovered via wide area spectroscopic surveys. At the current time there are approximately 2 million spectroscopic galaxy redshifts known (and rising) which represents an extraordinary growth since the pioneering work of Marc Davis and John Huchra. Similarly there has been a parallel explosion in wavelength coverage with imaging surveys progressing from single band, to multi-band, to truly multiwavelength or pan-chromatic involving the coordination of multiple facilities. With these empirically motivated studies has come a wealth of new discoveries impacting almost all areas of astrophysics. Today individual surveys, as best demonstrated by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, now rank shoulder-to-shoulder alongside major facilities. In the coming years this trend is set to continue as we begin the process of designing and conducting the next generation of spectroscopic surveys supported by multi-facility wavelength coverage.

The Gemini Observatories primarily operate a multi-instrument queue, with observers selecting observations that are best suited to weather and seeing conditions. The Target of Opportunity (ToO) observing mode is intended to allow observation of targets that cannot be specified in advance but which have a well defined external trigger such as distant supernovae or Gamma Ray bursts. In addition, the instrument and configuration best suited to observe the ToO may depend on properties of the event, such as brightness and redshift which again are impossible to know in advance. Queue observing naturally lends itself to Target of Opportunity (ToO) support since the time required to switch between programs and instruments is very short, and the staff observer is trained to operate all the available instruments and modes. Gemini Observatory has supported pre-approved ToO programs since beginning queue operations, and has implemented a rapid (less than 15 minutes response time) ToO mode since 2005. ToOs comprise a significant fraction of the queue (20–25% of the highest ranking band) nowadays. We discuss the ToO procedures, the statistics of rapid ToOs observing at Gemini North Observatory, the science related to GRBs and supernovae that this important mode has enabled.

We modelled the light curves of modulated multiperiodically pulsating stars by a simple double-mode pulsation with combined amplitude and frequency modulations. The synthetic light curves and their spectra show similar features to those we found and discussed for monoperiodic stars. Comparing the synthetic light curves and their spectra with the observed ones helps us to classify the modulations and to distinguish between long-period modulation (Blazhko effect) and the other types of amplitude and/or period changes.

Since its discovery, the feature at 21 μm has been detected in all C-rich proto-PNe of intermediate spectral type (A–G) and – weakly – in a few PNe and AGB stars, but the nature of its carriers remains unknown. In this paper, we show the detection of this feature in the spectra of three new stars obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope. In the attempt to relate the unidentified feature to other dust features, we retrieved mid-IR spectra of all the 21 μm sources currently known from ISO and Spitzer archives and noticed a correlation between the flux emitted in the 21 μm feature and that emitted at 7 and 11 μm (PAH bands and HAC broad emission). Such a correlation may point to a common nature of the carriers.

We present a circumstellar dust model around the symbiotic Mira RR Tel obtained by modeling the near-infrared JHKL magnitudes and ISO spectra. In order to follow the evolution of infrared colours in time, the published JHKL magnitudes were corrected by removing the Mira pulsations. The RR Tel light curves show three obscuration events in the near-IR. Using the simultaneously available JHKL magnitudes and ISO spectra in three different epochs, we obtained SEDs in the near- and mid-IR spectral region (1-20 μm) in epochs with and without obscuration.

The DUSTY numerical code was used to solve the radiative transfer and to determine the circumstellar dust properties of the inner dust regions around the Mira, assuming a spherical dust temperature distribution in its close neighbourhood. The physical properties of the dust, mass loss and optical depth during intervals with and without obscuration have been obtained. Both JHKL and ISO observations during the obscuration period can be reproduced with a spherical dust envelope, while ISO spectra outside obscuration show a different behaviour. The dynamical behaviour of the circumstellar dust was obtained by modeling the JHKL magnitudes observed during the span of more than 30 years.

The DUSTY code was also successfully applied in the modeling of circumstellar dust envelopes of young stellar objects, such as Herbig Ae/Be stars.

We present a brief technical outline of the newly-formed project, “Detection of Spectroscopic Differences over Time” (DS/DT). Our collaboration is using individual exposures from the SDSS spectroscopic archive to produce a uniformly-processed set of time-resolved spectra. Here we provide an overview of the properties and processing of the available data, and highlight the wide range of time base-lines present in the archive.

Understanding the intrinsic cosmic long gamma-ray burst (GRB) rate is essential in many aspects of astrophysics and cosmology, such as revealing the connection between GRBs, supernovae (SNe), and stellar evolution. Swift, a multi-wavelength space telescope, is quickly expanding the GRB category by observing hundreds of GRBs and their redshifts. However, it remains difficult to determine the intrinsic GRB rate due to the complex trigger algorithm adopted by Swift. Current studies of the GRB rate usually approximate the Swift trigger algorithm by a single detection threshold. Nevertheless, unlike the previously flown GRB instruments, Swift has over 500 trigger criteria based on count rates and additional thresholds for localization. To investigate possible systematic biases and further explore the intrinsic GRB rate as a function of redshift and the GRB luminosity function, we adopt a Monte Carlo approach by simulating all trigger criteria used by Swift. A precise estimation of the intrinsic GRB rate is important to reveal the GRB origins and their relation to the black-hole forming SNe. Additionally, the GRB rate at high redshifts provides a strong probe of the star formation history in the early universe, which is hard to measure directly through other methods.

We report trigonometric parallx measurements for H2O masers around the protoplanetary nebula OH 231.8+4.2 carried out with the Very Long Baseline Array. Based on astrometric monitoring for 1 year, we measured a trigonometric parallax of 0.89 ± 0.04 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.12+0.05−0.05 kpc. This is the most accurate distance to OH 231.8+4.2, and the first one based on an annual parallax measurement. The distribution and internal motions of the H2O masers are consistent with the bipolar outflow suggested in literatures.

The Herschel Space Observatory and the Planck satellite are providing radical improvements to our knowledge of the spectral energy distributions of galaxies in the far-IR and submm. We here present the results of the first combination of Herschel and Planck fluxes of local galaxies from the Herschel Reference Sample (HRS) survey, covering galaxies at distances between 15 and 25 Mpc. This combination provides information on SEDs in eight bands from 60μm, using IRAS, to 1.4mm using Planck. We apply a similar fitting procedure to this data as applied to the Planck ERCSC-detected nearby galaxies and confirm the result that dust significantly colder than 20K is common in local galaxies. It is early days for this kind of study, but it is clear that the new generation of satellites are already adding considerably to our knowledge of the far-IR/submm properties of galaxies.

I propose two new means of identifying the main class of progenitors of Type Ia supernovae – single or double degenerate: (i) If the range of supernova properties is significantly determined by the range of viewing angles of non-spherically symmetric explosions, then the nature of the correlation between polarization and another property (for example, the velocity gradient) can be used to determine the geometry of the asymmetry and hence the nature of the progenitor, and (ii) in the double- but not in the single-degenerate case, the range in the observed properties (e.g., velocity gradients) is likely to increase with the amount of carbon seen in the ejecta.

We present a new photometric reduction method for precise time-series photometry of non-crowded fields that does not need to involve relatively complicated and CPU intensive techniques such as point-spread-function (PSF) fitting or difference image analysis. This method, which combines multi-aperture index photometry and a spatio-temporal de-trending algorithm, gives much superior performance in data recovery and light-curve precision. In practice, the brutal filtering that is often applied to remove outlying data points can result in the loss of vital data, with seriously negative impacts on short-term variations such as flares. Our method utilizes nearly 100% of available data and reduces the rms scatter to several times smaller than that for archived light curves for brighter stars. We outline the details of our new method, and apply it to cases of sample data from the MMT survey of the M37 field, and the HAT-South survey.

We present the spectral energy distributions (SED) of the 323 galaxies of the Herschel Reference Survey. In order to provide templates for nearby galaxies calibrated on physical parameters, we computed mean SEDs per bin of morphological types and stellar masses. They will be very useful to study more distant galaxies and their evolution with redshift. This preliminary work aims to study how the most commonly used libraries (Chary & Elbaz 2001, Dale & Helou 2002 and Draine & Li 2007) reproduce the far-infrared emission of galaxies. First results show that they reproduce well the far-infrared part of mean SEDs. For single galaxies the Draine & Li (2007) models seem to reproduce very well the far-infrared emission, as does the Dale & Helou (2002).

We present an analysis of high precision V light curves (LC) for 18 local Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) as obtained with the same telescope and setup at the Las Campanas Observatory (LCO). This homogeneity provides an intrinsic accuracy of a few hundredths of a magnitude with respect to individual LCs and between different objects. Based on the single degenerate (SD) scenario, we identify patterns which have been predicted by model calculations as signatures of the progenitor and accretion rate which change the explosion energy and the amount of electron capture, respectively. Using these templates as principle components and the overdetermined system of SNe pairs, we reconstruct the properties of progenitors and progenitor systems. All LCO SNe Ia follow the brightness decline relation except 2001ay. After subtraction of the two components, the remaining scatter is reduced to ≈0.01m−0.03m. SNe Ia seem to originate from progenitors with main-sequence masses MMS > 3 M⊙ with the exception of two subluminous SNe Ia with MMS < 2 M⊙. The component analysis indicates a wide range of accretion rates in the progenitor systems closing the gap to accretion induced collapses (AIC). SN1991t-like objects show differences in decline rate (dm15) but no tracers of our secondary parameters. This may point to a different origin such as the double degenerate or pulsating delayed detonation scenarios. SN2001ay does not follow the decline relation. It can be understood in the framework of C-rich white dwarfs (WDs), and this group may produce an anti-Phillips relation. We suggest that this may be a result of a common envelope phase and mixing during central He burning as in SN1987A.

The Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) is a space mission to detect the early moments of an explosion from Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), thus enhancing our understanding of the GRB mechanism. It consists of the UFFO Burst & Trigger telescope (UBAT) for the recognition of GRB positions using hard X-ray from GRBs. It also contains the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) for the fast detection of UV-optical photons from GRBs. It is designed to begin the UV-optical observations in less than a few seconds after the trigger. The UBAT is based on a coded-mask X-ray camera with a wide field of view (FOV) and is composed of the coded mask, a hopper and a detector module. The SMT has a fast rotatable mirror which allows a fast UV-optical detection after the trigger. The telescope is a modified Ritchey-Chrétien telescope with the aperture size of 10 cm diameter, and an image intensifier readout by CCD. The UFFO pathfinder is scheduled to launch into orbit on 2012 June by the Lomonosov spacecraft. It is a scaled-down version of UFFO in order to make the first systematic study of early UV/optical light curves, including the rise phase of GRBs. We expect UBAT to trigger ~44 GRBs/yr and expect SMT to detect ~10 GRBs/yr.

We present the most extensive, long-slit, high-resolution coverage of the complex planetary nebula (PN), NGC 7026. Ten spectra were acquired using the Manchester Echelle Spectrometer at San Pedro Martir Observatory in Baja California, Mexico, and each shows exquisite detail, revealing the intricate structure of this object. Incorporating these spectra into the 3-dimensional visualization and kinematic program, Shape, and using HST images of NGC 7026, we have produced a detailed structural and kinematic model of this PN. Knowledge of the 3-D structure of this nebula is relevant to understand the physics behind the extended X-ray emission in this object.
