We discuss formation mechanisms for low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters. We apply the most efficient mechanism, tidal capture in close two-body encounters between neutron and main-sequence stars, to the clusters of our galaxy. The observed number of X-ray sources in these can be explained if the birth velocities of neutron stars are higher than estimated from velocity measurements of radiopulsars, or if the initial mass function steepens at high masses. We perform a statistical test on the distribution of X-ray sources with respect to the number of close encounters in globular clusters, and find satisfactory agreement between the tidal capture theory and observation, apart from the presence of low-mass X-ray binaries in four clusters with a very low encounter rate: Ter 1, Ter 2, Gr 1 and NGC 6712.

EXOSAT observations indicate that some dim globular cluster sources may be less luminous than hitherto assumed, and support the view that the brighter dim sources may be soft X-ray transients in quiescence.

The emerging statistical properties from the first 50 extrasolar planets are startlingly different from the picture that was imagined prior to 1995. About 0.75% of nearby solar type stars harbor jovian planets in 3 to 5 day circular orbits. Another ∽7% of stars have jupiter–mass companions orbiting in eccentric orbits within 3.5 AU. The mass distribution of substellar companions rises abruptly near 5 MJup and continues increasing down to the detection limit near 1 MJup-Orbital eccentricities correlate positively with semimajor axes, even for planets beyond the tidal circularization zone within 0.1 AU, distinguishing planets from binary stars. The planet bearing stars are metal–rich relative to both nearby stars and to the Sun. Analogs of Solar System planets have not been detected to date as they require precision of 3 m s−1 maintained for more than a decade.

The number of known diffuse radio sources in clusters of galaxies has grown in recent years, making it possible to derive statistical properties of these sources and of the hosting clusters. We show that diffuse sources are associated with X-ray luminous clusters which have undergone recent merger processes. The radio and X-ray structures are often similar, and correlations are found between radio and X-ray parameters. This is indication of a link between the diffuse relativistic and thermal plasma in clusters of galaxies.

The measurement of weak gravitational lensing is currently limited to a precision of $\sim$10% by instabilities in galaxy shape measurement techniques and uncertainties in their calibration. The potential of large, on-going and future cosmic shear surveys will only be realised with the development of more accurate image analysis methods. We present a description of several possible shear measurement methods using the linear “shapelets” decomposition. Shapelets provides a complete reconstruction of any galaxy image, including higher-order shape moments that can be used to generalise the KSB method to arbitrary order. Many independent shear estimators can then be formed for each object, using linear combinations of shapelet coefficients. These estimators can be treated separately, to improve their overall calibration; or combined in more sophisticated ways, to eliminate various instabilities and a calibration bias. We apply several methods to simulated astronomical images containing a known input shear, and demonstrate the dramatic improvement in shear recovery using shapelets. Chromospheres and coronae in stars appear to require vigorous convection zones just below the surface. If we wish to understand how various dynamical instabilities contribute to the mechanical heating that is required to produce chromospheres, then we must be concerned both with fluid motions in the atmosphere and with the nature of their driving below the surface. One cannot really separate these two subjects. In order to emphasize this link, we will raise some basic questions about convective flows in a stellar envelope and of their penetration into the atmosphere. The significant puzzles between what is observed and what can be theoretically explained should serve to indicate some of the issues that need to be pursued. We will concentrate on the Sun in our discussions: the observations here are sufficiently detailed to provide the explicit challenges to theory unavailable in most other stars. However, we will also turn to A-type stars to illustrate a theoretical procedure for describing convection that may do better than the mixing-length approach in predicting the vertical structure in these flows.

We present our first results on a new sample containing all single G, K and M giants down to V = 4 mag in the Solar vicinity, suitable for spectropolarimetric (Stokes V) observations with Narval at TBL, France. For detection and measurement of the magnetic field (MF), the Least Squares Deconvolution (LSD) method was applied (Donati et al. 1997) that in the present case enables detection of large-scale MFs even weaker than the solar one (the typical precision of our longitudinal MF measurements is 0.1-0.2 G). The evolutionary status of the stars is determined on the basis of the evolutionary models with rotation (Lagarde et al. 2012; Charbonnel et al., in prep.) and fundamental parameters given by Massarotti et al. (1998). The stars appear to be in the mass range 1-4 M⊙, situated at different evolutionary stages after the Main Sequence (MS), up to the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB).

The sample contains 45 stars. Up to now, 29 stars are observed (that is about 64% of the sample), each observed at least twice. For 2 stars in the Hertzsprung gap, one is definitely Zeeman detected. Only 5 G and K giants, situated mainly at the base of the Red Giant Branch (RGB) and in the He-burning phase are detected. Surprisingly, a lot of stars ascending towards the RGB tip and in early AGB phase are detected (8 of 13 observed stars). For all Zeeman detected stars v sin i is redetermined and appears in the interval 2-3 km/s, but few giants with MF possess larger v sin i.

In this review, I discuss the use of galaxy-galaxy weak lensing measurements to study the masses of dark matter halos in which galaxies reside. After summarizing how weak gravitational lensing measurements can be interpreted in terms of halo mass, I review measurements that were used to derive the relationship between optical galaxy mass tracers, such as stellar mass or luminosity, and dark matter halo mass. Measurements of galaxy-galaxy lensing from the past decade have led to increasingly tight constraints on the connection between dark matter halo mass and optical mass tracers, including both the mean relationships between these quantities and the intrinsic scatter between them. I also review some of the factors that can complicate analysis, such as the choice of modeling procedure, and choices made when dividing up samples of lens galaxies.

Studies of disks around young brown dwarfs are of paramount importance to our understanding of the origin, diversity and early evolution of sub-stellar objects. Here we present first results from a systematic search for disk emission in a spectroscopically confirmed sample of young objects near or below the sub-stellar boundary in a variety of star-forming regions. Our VLT and Keck L'-band observations of the σ Orionis and TW Hydrae associations suggest that if a majority of brown dwarfs are born with disks, at least the inner regions of those disks evolve rapidly, possibly clearing out within a few million years.

Our Atlas of Extragalactic Radio Sources will present high-quality images of the nearer half of “3CRR”, the sample defined by Laing, Riley & Longair (1983). This is the best-studied complete sample of extragalactic radio sources. All 173 members have secure redshifts and most have been imaged in the radio at high resolution. There is also copious information on their optical line emission, and many have been detected in the sub-mm, FIR, and in X-rays. 3CRR is widely used as a baseline against which fainter, higher-redshift samples can be compared to define the evolution of the population (e.g. Neeser et al. 1995; Law-Green, this conference).

In observations of six binary millisecond pulsars with the Hubble Space Telescope, we have discovered white dwarf companions to PSRs J0034-0534, J1022+1001, J1713+0747, and J2019+2425 and improved photometry on PSRs J1640+2224 and J2145-0750. Three of the white dwarfs are among the coolest and oldest known. We have determined that the masses for the helium companions are consistent with the expectation based on the core mass of a progenitor that filled its Roche lobe. The cooling times for many of the white dwarfs are much less than the characteristic spin-down times, implying that the spin period at the end of the accretion stage was close to the current period. The initial spin periods calculated are used to place limits on the accretion rate at the end of the low-mass X-ray binary phase. The accretion rates are found to be over an order of magnitude less than the Eddington rate.

We have monitored velocity variability in nine proto-planetary nebulae (PPN) over a 5 year interval and have monitored light variability in 40 PPN over a 2 year interval. We find all nine of the objects to vary in velocity and almost all of the 40 to vary in light. Three of the objects display a clear periodicity in their velocity variations, and in all three the light varies with the same period as the velocity. Periodic light variations are found in six other objects. We interpret these as due to pulsation in the PPN.

The derivation of nebular abundances in galaxies using strong line methods is simple and quick. Various indices have been designed and calibrated for this purpose, and they are widely used. However, abundances derived with such methods may be significantly biased, if the objects under study have different structural properties (hardness of the ionizing radiation field, morphology of the nebulae) than those used to calibrate the methods. Special caution is required when comparing the metallicities of different samples, like, for example, blue compact galaxies and other emission line dwarf galaxies, or samples at different redshifts.

We report on an international collaboration, the FERRUM Project, which aims at extending the database of experimental oscillator strengths for iron group elements and possibly evaluating theoretical and astrophysical data. The selection of individual projects is made with respect to their relevance for abundance work and plasma diagnostics in astrophysics. In this paper we present recent measurements of gf-values in Fe II. We also report on the first measurements of forbidden lines of the same spectrum, [Fe II].

The hydrodynamic approach to the modeling of the collisional regions of the cometary atmospheres is reviewed. A concise account of the existing Monte Carlo simulations is also incorporated. Emphasis is placed on works stimulated by the Halley flyby missions. The basic physical processes are described, based on the analogy with the physics of underexpanded jets. The general structure of the governing equations is presented and their legacy discussed. A detailed intercomparison is made of the application of these methods to the modeling of the comas. The reliability of the conclusions brought forward by existing models is discussed.

We briefly review ground-based (sub)millimeter dust continuum observations of the prestellar core mass function (CMF) and its connection to the stellar initial mass function (IMF). We also summarize the first results obtained on this topic from the Herschel Gould Belt survey, one of the largest key projects with the Herschel Space Observatory. Our early findings with Herschel confirm the existence of a close relationship between the CMF and the IMF. Furthermore, they suggest a scenario according to which the formation of prestellar cores occurs in two main steps: 1) complex networks of long, thin filaments form first, probably as a result of interstellar MHD turbulence; 2) the densest filaments then fragment and develop prestellar cores via gravitational instability.

A flexible and extensible software package for analyzing two-dimensional and multi-object spectra of nebulae has been implemented within Microsoft Excel (version 5). From lists of calibrated fluxes (and errors) for lines in a series of spectra, the program first identifies transitions by referring to wavelengths generated from atomic data. Colour excesses can be computed from a reddening law and ratio of total to selective extinction of the user's choice. Line fluxes can be corrected for stellar absorption and reddening and reported in a format suitable for publication. Temperatures, densities, ionic abundances, ionization correction factors, and total abundances can be computed. (The interface for the temperture/density calculation is shown below.) Emission coefficients for forbidden transitions are calculated using an adaptation of the FIVEL five-level atom routine (DeRobertis, 1987). As well, emission coefficients are supplied for an extensive set of recombination lines. The user has complete control over which spectral lines are used in an analysis – there are no pre-ordained methods. Abundance analyses can be performed using the physical conditions either measured or specified for each spectrum. Uncertainties are propagated throughout. The atomic data used in all of the calculations are easily updated or augmented by the user. Since the software is embedded in Microsoft Excel, graphical representations of the data are easily created, and extended analyses using the full functionality of the spreadsheet are easily implemented.

Recent observational results toward the “Hot Core” sources (Orion KL, SgrB2, G34.3+0.15, W51, and so on) are summarized. Several saturated organic molecules are commonly observed among these sources, and these results favor formations on the grain mantles followed by evaporation. Some results of surveys in “hot core molecules” are presented. Such molecules may be used as diagnostics to establish the presence of “hot core” regions.

A brief discussion of the systematic effects of selection bias on the extragalactic distance scale is given. Distance indicators with intrinsic scatter yield only upper limits to Ho, unless the true intrinsic scatter is either small or well determined. Several distance indicators (luminosity index, diameters, globular clusters, 21 cm line widths) are discussed. It is concluded that type I supernovae, calibrated through brightest M supergiants, yield presently the most reliable determination of the large-scale value of the Hubble constant, i.e. Ho(cosmic) = 50 ± 7 km s–1 Mpc–1.

The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) at UV, optical and NIR wavelengths consists of the integrated light of all unresolved galaxies along the line of sight plus any contributions by intergalactic matter including hypothetical decaying relic particles. The measurement of the EBL has turned out to be a tedious problem. This is because of the foreground components of the night sky brightness, much larger than the EBL itself: the Zodiacal Light (ZL), Integrated Starlight (ISL), Diffuse Galactic Light (DGL) and, for ground-based observations, the Airglow (AGL) and the tropospheric scattered light. We have been developing a method for the EBL measurement which utilises the screening effect of a dark nebula on the EBL. A differential measurement in the direction of a high-latitude dark nebula and its surrounding area provides a signal that is due to two components only, i.e. the EBL and the diffusely scattered ISL from the cloud. We present a progress report of this method where we are now utilising intermediate resolution spectroscopy with ESO's VLT telescope. We detect and remove the scattered ISL component by using its characteristic Fraunhofer line spectral signature. In contrast to the ISL, in the EBL spectrum all spectral lines are washed out. We present a high quality spectrum representing the difference between an opaque position within our target cloud and several clear OFF positions around the cloud. We derive a preliminary EBL value at 400 nm and an upper limit to the EBL at 520 nm. These values are in the same range as the EBL lower limits derived from galaxy counts.
