We prove inequalities for convex functions, Lp norms, and sums of powers. Our results sharpen recently published inequalities of C. E. M. Pearce and J. E. Pečarić.

A theory of positive definite kernels in the context of Hilbert C*-modules is presented. Applications are given, including a representation of a Hilbert C*-module as a concrete space of operators and a construction of the exterior tensor product of two Hilbert C*-modules.

We prove that every partially defined derivation on a semisimple complex Banach algebra whose domain is a (non necessarily closed) essential ideal is closable. In particular, we show that every derivation defined on any nonzero ideal of a prime C*-algebra is continuous.

Given a Banach space E, let us denote by Max(E) the largest operator space structure on E. Recently Paulsen-Pisier and, independently, Junge proved that for any Banach spaces E, F, isomorphically where and respectively denote the Haagerup tensor product and the spatial tensor product of operator spaces. In this paper we show that, in general, this equality does not hold completely isomorphically.

The notion of Arens regularity of a bilinear form on a Banach space E is extended to continuous m-linear forms, in such a way that the natural associated linear mappings, E→L (m−1E) and (m – l)-linear mappings E × … × E → E', are all weakly compact. Among other applications, polynomials whose first derivative is weakly compact are characterized.

We examine the action of diffeomorphisms of an oriented surface with boundary on the space of conjugacy classes of SU(2) representations of the fundamental group and prove that in the case of a single periodic diffeomorphism the induced action always has fixed points. For the corresponding 3-dimensional mapping cylinders we obtain families of representations parametrized by their value on the longitude of the torus boundary.

In this paper, we obtain some characterizations for the weighted weak type (1, q) inequality to hold for the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator in the case 0<q<1; prove that there is no nontrivial weight satisfying one-weight weak type (p, q) inequalities when 0<p≠q< ∞, and discuss the equivalence between the weak type (p, q) inequality and the strong type (p, q) inequality when p≠q.

It is shown that for m = 1,2,3,…, the trigonometric sums and can be represented as integer-valued polynomials in n of degrees 2m – 1 and 2m, respectively. Properties of these polynomials are discussed, and recurrence relations for the coefficients are obtained. The proofs of the results depend on the representations of particular polynomials of degree n – 1 or less as their own Lagrange interpolation polynomials based on the zeros of the nth Chebyshev polynomial Tn(x) = cos(narccos x), -1≤x≤1.
