In this paper we study the spaces of operator-Lipschitz functions and the spaces of functions closed to them: commutator bounded. Apart from the standard operator norm on $B(H)$, we consider a rich variety of symmetric operator norms and spaces of operator-Lipschitz functions with respect to these norms. Our approach is aimed at the investigation of the interrelation and hierarchy of these spaces and of the intrinsic properties of operator-Lipschitz functions.

The aim of this note is to characterize 2-local automorphisms and derivations on matrix rings over finite-dimensional division rings.

An important inequality due to Wolff on plate decompositions of cone multipliers is known to have consequences for sharp Lp results on cone multipliers, local smoothing for the wave equation, convolutions with radial kernels, Bergman projections in tubes over cones, averages over finite-type curves in ℝ3 and associated maximal functions. We observe that the range of p in Wolff's inequality, for the conic and the spherical versions, can be improved by using bilinear restriction results. We also use this inequality to give some improved estimates on square functions associated to decompositions of cone multipliers in low dimensions. This gives a new L4 bound for the cone multiplier operator in ℝ3.

In this paper we consider the existence of a positive solution to boundary-value problems with non-local nonlinear boundary conditions, the archetypical example being −y″(t) = λf(t,y(t)), t ∈ (0, 1), y(0) = H(φ(y)), y(1) = 0. Here, H is a nonlinear function, λ > 0 is a parameter and φ is a linear functional that is realized as a Lebesgue—Stieltjes integral with signed measure. By requiring φ to decompose in a certain way, we show that this problem has at least one positive solution for each λ ∈ (0, λ0), for a number λ0 > 0 that is explicitly computable. We also give a separate result that holds for all λ > 0.

The self-affine measure μM, D corresponding to M = diag[p1, p2, p3] (pj ∈ ℤ \ {0, ± 1}, j = 1, 2, 3) and D = {0, e1, e2, e3} in the space ℝ3 is supported on the three-dimensional Sierpinski gasket T(M, D), where e1, e2, e3 are the standard basis of unit column vectors in ℝ3. We shall determine the spectrality and non-spectrality of μM, D, and show that if pj ∈ 2ℤ \ {0, 2} for j = 1, 2, 3, then μM, D is a spectral measure, and if pj ∈ (2ℤ + 1) \ {±1} for j = 1, 2, 3, then μM, D is a non-spectral measure and there exist at most 4 mutually orthogonal exponential functions in L2(μM, D), where the number 4 is the best possible. This generalizes the known results on the spectrality of self-affine measures.

In semigroup theory as in other algebraic theories a significant part of the total effort is appropriately applied to the study of certain standard examples occurring, as it were, “in nature”. The most obvious such semigroup is the full transformation semigroup (X) (see [3]) and about this semigroup a great deal is known in both the finite and infinite cases.

Maximal regularity for an integro-differential equation with infinite delay on periodic vector-valued Besov spaces is studied. We use Fourier multipliers techniques to characterize periodic solutions solely in terms of spectral properties on the data. We study a resonance case obtaining a compatibility condition which is necessary and sufficient for the existence of periodic solutions.

Throughout, A denotes an associative ring with identity and “module” means “left, unitary A-module”. In (3), it is proved that A is semi-simple, Artinian if A is a semi-prime ring such that every left ideal is a left annihilator. A natural question is whether a similar result holds for a (von Neumann) regular ring. The first proposition of this short note is that if A contains no non-zero nilpotent element, then A is regular iff every principal left ideal is the left annihilator of an element of A. It is well-known that a commutative ring is regular iff every simple module is injective (I. Kaplansky, see (2, p. 130)). The second proposition here is a partial generalisation of that result.

This paper concerns perturbations of smooth vector fields on $\mathbb{T}^n$ (constant if $n\geq3$) with zeroth-order $C^\infty$ and Gevrey $G^\sigma$, $\sigma\geq1$, pseudodifferential operators. Simultaneous resonance is introduced and simultaneous resonant normal forms are exhibited (via conjugation with an elliptic pseudodifferential operator) under optimal simultaneous Diophantine conditions outside the resonances. In the $C^\infty$ category the results are complete, while in the Gevrey category the effect of the loss of the Gevrey regularity of the conjugating operators due to Diophantine conditions is encountered. The normal forms are used to study global hypoellipticity in $C^\infty$ and Gevrey $G^\sigma$. Finally, the exceptional sets associated with the simultaneous Diophantine conditions are studied. A generalized Hausdorff dimension is used to give precise estimates of the ‘size’ of different exceptional sets, including some inhomogeneous examples.

A graph Γ is said to be locally primitive if, for each vertex α, the stabilizer in Aut Γ of α induces a primitive permutation group on the set of vertices adjacent to α. In 1978, Richard Weiss conjectured that for a finite vertex-transitive locally primitive graph Γ, the number of automorphisms fixing a given vertex is bounded above by some function of the valency of Γ. In this paper we prove that the conjecture is true for finite non-bipartite graphsprovided that it is true in the case in which Aut Γ contains a locally primitive subgroup that is almost simple.

In this paper, we introduce the polynomial numerical index of order $k$ of a Banach space, generalizing to $k$-homogeneous polynomials the ‘classical’ numerical index defined by Lumer in the 1970s for linear operators. We also prove some results. Let $k$ be a positive integer. We then have the following:

(i) $n^{(k)}(C(K))=1$ for every scattered compact space $K$.

(ii) The inequality $n^{(k)}(E)\geq k^{k/(1-k)}$ for every complex Banach space $E$ and the constant $k^{k/(1-k)}$ is sharp.

This paper aims to lay the foundations for a combinatorial study, via orthogonal functions and intertwining operators, of category for the rational Cherednik algebra of type G(r, p, n). As a first application, a self-contained and elementary proof of the analogue for the groups G(r, p, n), with r > 1, of Gordon's Theorem (previously Haiman's Conjecture) on the diagonal co-invariant ring is given. No restriction is imposed on p; the result for p ≠ r has been proved by Vale using a technique analogous to Gordon's. Because of the combinatorial application to Haiman's Conjecture, the paper is logically self-contained except for standard facts about complex reflection groups. The main results should be accessible to mathematicians working in algebraic combinatorics who are unfamiliar with the impressive range of ideas used in Gordon's proof of his theorem.

In this paper we study the problem of algebraic reflexivity of the isometry group of some important Banach spaces. Because of the previous work in similar topics, our main interest lies in the von Neumann – Schatten p-classes of compact operators. The ideas developed there can be used in ℓp-spaces, Banach spaces of continuous functions and spin factors as well. Moreover, we attempt to attract the attention to this problem from general Banach spaces geometry view-point. This study, we believe, would provide nice geometrical results.

We give arithmetic characterizations which allow us to determine algorithmically when the semigroup ring associated to a simplicial affine semigroup is Cohen-Macaulay and/or Gorenstein. These characterizations are then used to provide information about presentations of this kind of semigroup and, in particular, to obtain bounds for the cardinality of their minimal presentations. Finally, we show that these bounds are reached for semigroups with maximal codimension.

We solve the inverse spectral problems for the class of Sturm–Liouville operators with singular real-valued potentials from the Sobolev space $W^{s-1}_2(0,1)$, $s\in[0,1]$. The potential is recovered from two spectra or from one spectrum and the norming constants. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the spectral data to correspond to a potential in $W^{s-1}_2(0,1)$ are established.

It is a well-known fact that any normed algebra can be represented isometrically as an algebra of operators with the operator norm. As might be expected from the very universality of this property, it is little used in the study of the structure of an algebra. Far more helpful are representations on Hilbert space, though these are correspondingly hard to come by: isometric representations on Hilbert space are not to be expected in general, and even continuous nontrivial representations may fail to exist. The purpose of this paper is to examine a class of representations intermediate in both availability and utility to those already mentioned—namely, representations on reflexive spaces. There certainly are normed algebras which admit isometric representations of the latter type but have not even faithful representations on Hilbert space: the most natural example is the algebra of all continuous linear operators on E where E = lp with 1 < p ≠ 2 < ∞, for Berkson and Porta proved in (2) that if E, F are taken from the spaces lp with 1 < p < ∞ and E ≠ F then the only continuous homomorphism from into is the zero mapping. On the other hand there are also algebras which have no continuous nontrivial representation on any reflexive space—for example the algebra of finite-rank operators on an irreflexive Banach space (see Berkson and Porta (2) or Barnes (1) or Theorem 3, Corollary 1 below).

We show how the third integral homology of a group plays a role in determining whether a given group is isomorphic to an inner automorphism group. Various necessary conditions, and sufficient conditions, for the existence of such an isomorphism are obtained.
