In the second paper under this general title, it was shown how a theorem about the torus could be deduced by a limiting process from a theorem on finite abelian groups. The object of this paper is to prove a similar continuous analogue of H. B. Mann's (α+β)-theorem. It was found that the limiting process used in the second paper could not easily be modified to apply to the present problem, and an alternative method had to be found. The method is, roughly, to prove the result first for open sets satisfying certain conditions, then for closed sets by taking intersections of open sets, and finally for arbitrary measurable sets, since every measurable set contains a closed set of almost equal measure.

Croft, Falconer and Guy asked: what is the smallest integer $n$ such that an $n$-reptile in the plane has a hole? Motivated by this question, we describe a geometric method of constructing reptiles in $\mathbb{R}^d$, especially reptiles with holes. In particular, we construct, for each even integer $n\ge4$, an $n$-reptile in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with holes. We also answer some questions concerning the topological properties of a reptile whose interior consists of infinitely many components.

We prove inequalities for convex functions, Lp norms, and sums of powers. Our results sharpen recently published inequalities of C. E. M. Pearce and J. E. Pečarić.

In (1) I obtained † an asymptotic formula for the number of zeros of an arbitrary canonical product II(z) of integral order but not of mean type, all of whose zeros lie on a single radius, from a knowledge of the asymptotic behaviour of (i)log | П(z)| as | z | = r→ ∞ along another radius l, with certain side conditions. In this paper the study of radicals of finite near-rings is initiated. The main result (Theorem 4.3) gives a description of hereditary radicals having hereditary semisimple classes too. Also it is shown that there exist non-hereditary radicals having hereditary semisimple classes.

A problem posed in the early eighteenth century asks for right-angled triangles, each of whose sides exceeds double the area by a perfect square. We summarize known results and find such triangles with the smallest possible standard generators.

This article is about Lehn–Lehn–Sorger–van Straten eightfolds $Z$ and their anti-symplectic involution $\iota$. When $Z$ is birational to the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface, we give an explicit formula for the action of $\iota$ on the Chow group of $0$-cycles of $Z$. The formula is in agreement with the Bloch–Beilinson conjectures and has some non-trivial consequences for the Chow ring of the quotient.

Let $\mathcal {O}(\pi )$ denote the number of odd parts in an integer partition $\pi$. In 2005, Stanley introduced a new statistic $\operatorname {srank}(\pi )=\mathcal {O}(\pi )-\mathcal {O}(\pi ')$, where $\pi '$ is the conjugate of $\pi$. Let $p(r,\,m;n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with srank congruent to $r$ modulo $m$. Generating function identities, congruences and inequalities for $p(0,\,4;n)$ and $p(2,\,4;n)$ were then established by a number of mathematicians, including Stanley, Andrews, Swisher, Berkovich and Garvan. Motivated by these works, we deduce some generating functions and inequalities for $p(r,\,m;n)$ with $m=16$ and $24$. These results are refinements of some inequalities due to Swisher.

Let p be prime. We prove that, for n odd, the p-torsion part of πq(Sn) has cardinality at most $p^{2^{{1}/({p-1})(q-n+3-2p)}}$ and hence has rank at most 21/(p−1)(q−n+3−2p). for p = 2, these results also hold for n even. The best bounds proven in the existing literature are $p^{2^{q-n+1}}$ and 2q−n+1, respectively, both due to Hans–Werner Henn. The main point of our result is therefore that the bound grows more slowly for larger primes. As a corollary of work of Henn, we obtain a similar result for the homotopy groups of a broader class of spaces.

Given an oriented link in the 3-sphere, the Euler characteristic of its link Floer homology is known to coincide with its multi-variable Alexander polynomial, an invariant only defined up to a sign and powers of the variables. In this paper we remove this ambiguity by proving that this Euler characteristic is equal to the so-called Conway function, the representative of the multi-variable Alexander polynomial introduced by Conway in 1970 and explicitly constructed by Hartley in 1983. This is achieved by creating a model of the Conway function adapted to rectangular diagrams, which is then compared to the Euler characteristic of the combinatorial version of link Floer homology.

Two theorems of Gateva-Ivanova [Set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, braces and symmetric groups, Adv. Math. 338 (2018), 649–701] on square-free set-theoretic solutions to the Yang–Baxter equation are extended to a wide class of solutions. The square-free hypothesis is almost completely removed. Gateva-Ivanova and Majid's ‘cyclic’ condition ${\boldsymbol {\rm lri}}$ is shown to be equivalent to balancedness, introduced in Rump [A decomposition theorem for square-free unitary solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, Adv. Math. 193 (2005), 40–55]. Basic results on balanced solutions are established. For example, it is proved that every finite, not necessarily square-free, balanced brace determines a multipermutation solution.

If a differential equation with meromorphic coefficients has a certain form where the growth of one of the coefficients dominates the growth of the other coefficients in a finite union of angles, then we show that this puts restrictions on the deficiencies of any meromorphic solution of the equation. We use the spread relation in the proofs. Examples are given which show that our results are sharp in several ways. Most of these examples are constructed from the quotients of solutions of w″ + G(z)w = 0 for certain polynomials G(z) and from meromorphic functions which are extremal for the spread relation.
