The Dickson polynomial Dn, (x, a) of degree n is defined by denotes the greatest integer function. In particular, we define D0 (x, a) = 2 for all real x and a. By using Dickson polynomials we present new types of generalized Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds. Some basic properties of these numbers and a combinatorial application to the enumeration of functions on finite sets in terms of their range values is also given.

Let Μ be a Bade complete (or σ-complete) Boolean algebra of projections in a Banach space X. This paper is concerned with the following questions: When is Μ equal to the resolution of the identity (or the strong operator closure of the resolution of the identity) of some scalar-type spectral operator T (with σ(T) ⊆ ℝ) in X? It is shown that if X is separable, then Μ always coincides with such a resolution of the identity. For certain restrictions on Μ some positive results are established in non-separable spaces X. An example is given for which Μ is neither a resolution of the identity nor the strong operator closure of a resolution of the identity.

We study the profile near quenching time for the solutions of the first and second initial boundary value problems (IBVP) for a semilinear heat equation. Under certain conditions, one-point quenching occurs for both first and second IBVPs. Furthermore, we derive the asymptotic self-similar quenching rate for both problems.

Let S be a regular semigroup and be its congruence lattice. For ρ ∈ , we consider the sublattice Lρ of generated by the congruences pw where w ∈ {K, k, T, t}* and w has no subword of the form KT, TK, kt, tk. Here K, k, T, t are the operators on induced by the kernel and the trace relations on . We find explicitly the least lattice L whose homomorphic image is Lρ for all ρ ∈ and represent it as a distributive lattice in terms of generators and relations. We also consider special cases: bands of groups, E-unitary regular semigroups, completely simple semigroups, rectangular groups as well as varieties of completely regular semigroups.

Characterization and uniqueness results are given for uniform approximation which extend to suns previously known results for convex sets.

We answer the following questions negatively: Does there exist a simple locally finite barely transitive group (LFBT-group)? More precisely we have: There exists no simple LFBT -group. We also deal with the question, whether there exists a LFBT-group G acting on an infinite set Ω so that G is a group of finitary permutations on Ω. Along this direction we prove: If there exists a finitary LFBT-group G, then G is a minimal non-FC p-group. Moreover we prove that: If a stabilizer of a point in a LFBT-group G is abelian, then G is metabelian. Furthermore G is a p-group for some prime p, G/G′ ≅ Cp∞, and G′ is an abelian group of finite exponent.

In this work we introduce the notion of E-ideal, generalizing I. M. H. Etherington's idea. We study the general characteristics of the lattice of E-ideals in baric algebras, and some properties inherited from an arithmetic of train polynomials.

An inverse transversal of a regular semigroup S is an inverse subsemigroup So that contains precisely one inverse of each element of S. Here we consider the case where S is quasi-orthodox. We give natural characterisations of such semigroups and consider various properties of congruences.

The Kervaire Conjecture is correct if it can be shown to hold for non-singular systems of equations of length 3. In this paper we prove it for the case of equations over a group G where each equation has the form axbx−1cy = 1 for a, b, c ∈ G.

In 1962 Gilbert Baumslag introduced the class of groups Gi, j for natural numbers i, j, defined by the presentations Gi, j = < a, b, t; a−1 = [bi, a] [bj, t] >. This class is of special interest since the groups are para-free, that is they share many properties with the free group F of rank 2.

Magnus and Chandler in their History of Combinatorial Group Theory mention the class Gi, j to demonstrate the difficulty of the isomorphism problem for torsion-free one-relator groups. They remark that as of 1980 there was no proof showing that any of the groups Gi, j are non-isomorphic. S. Liriano in 1993 using representations of Gi, j into PSL(2, pk), k ∈ ℕ, showed that G1,1 and G30,30 are non-isomorphic. In this paper we extend these results to prove that the isomorphism problem for Gi, 1, i ∈ ℕ is solvable, that is it can be decided algorithmically in finitely many steps whether or not an arbitrary one-relator group is isomorphic to Gi, 1. Further we show that Gi, 1 ≇ G1, 1 for all i > 1 and if i, k are primes then Gi, 1 ≅ Gk, 1 if and only if i = k.

We study the initial value problem to the Davey-Stewartson system for the elliptic-hyperbolic case in the usual Sobolev space. We prove local existence and uniqueness H5/2 with a condition such that the L2 norm of the data is sufficiently small.

On pages 338 and 339 in his first notebook, Ramanujan records eighteen values for a certain product of theta-functions depending on two integral parameters m and n. When (m, n) = 1, it can be seen that each of these values is a unit. The purpose of this paper is to establish each of these eighteen values and to prove that under certain general conditions this product is indeed a unit. Lastly, we prove that certain quotients of theta-functions are algebraic integers.
