On the 10th of July 1978 it was 25 years since I had defended my thesis before the Faculty of Theology of the University of Leiden.1 On the 2nd of October of that year the new edition of the Greek text of the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, prepared over a number of years by a small group of people in the same faculty of the same university, came off the press.2 One will understand that the attainment of this milestone gave rise to introspection, retrospection and circumspection. What have I achieved in all those years, what should still be done, why is there still so much difference of opinion among scholars working in the field of the Testaments? Why do I keep returning to them and why do I have the feeling that the more I know the more complications I notice?

Was meint Paulus mit den Ausdrücken ‘Gesetz des Glaubens’ (Röm. 3. 27) und ‘das Gesetz des Geistes des Lebens’ (Röm. 8. 2)? Lange Zeit waren die Interpreten fast einmütig: Paulus spielt mit Worten und gebraucht den Terminus νόμος in einem allgemeinen, übertragenen bzw. uneigentlichen Sinne. Das Wort bezeichnet an beiden Stellen nicht die alttestamentliche Torah, sondern es ist etwa mit ‘Regel’, ‘Ordnung’, ‘Norm’, ‘System’ oder ‘ ‘Prinzip’ wiederzugeben. Das sind die hauptsächlichen Übersetzungsvor-schläge zu 3. 27. Zu 8. 2 wird ein noch weiteres Spektrum geboten. Außer den schon genannten werden u. a. ‘Herrschaft’, ‘Religion’, ‘Kraft’, ‘Autorität’, ‘Äone’, ‘Sphäre’, ‘régime’ und ‘pattern’ vorgeschlagen. An 3. 27 geben auch einige moderne englische Bibelausgaben νόμος mit ‘principle’ wieder (RSV, NEB); an 8. 2 sind die Übersetzungen mehr reserviert.

With a view to shedding more light on the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews' attitude to the Old Testament this article seeks to investigate the modifications which he makes to the text of his quotations from the Old Testament. Many such investigations have been undertaken in the past, but they have been hampered by the incomplete state of Septuagintal research. They failed to take into account the multiplicity of Septuagintal manuscripts at the time of the writing of the Epistle to the Hebrews. As a result the text of the Old Testament quotations in Hebrews was usually compared with that of only two or three of the very well known codices (especially Codex Alexandrinus and Vaticanus) and the many divergences in Hebrews from these codices were attributed to the hand of the author of Hebrews.

Dans la première édition de La structure littéraire de l' Epître aux Hébreux (Paris, 1962), A. Vanhoye notait au terme de son étude d'Héb 3, 1–6: ‘Nous n'oserions pas prétendre que cette interprétation s'impose en tout point avec la clarté de l'éVidence’ (p. 91), et dans la deuxième édition (Paris, 1976) il ajoute: ‘Cette discussion reste fort problématique. Le raisonnement de l'auteur n'est pas assez explicite pour qu'on puisse en saisir avec certitude toutes les étapes’ (p. 265). Cette dernière affirmation nous semble contestable, et c'est ce que le présent travail voudrait s'efforcer de montrer. Sans revenir sur les critiques adressées à juste titre par Vanhoye (pp. 88–9) aux lectures de C. Spicq, O. Michel, J. Héring et J. Moffatt, et sans négliger l'apport des deux éditions du livre, mais non plus celui de l'article de J. Swetnam, ‘Form and Content in Hebrews 1–6’,1 nous proposerons d'abord une traduction servile du texte, puis nous en étudierons la structure littéraire, et enfin nous essaierons de saisir les étapes du raisonnement de l'auteur. L'étude du rapport aux premiers chapitres sera notre conclusion.

Since the publication of Hort's Introduction to the Westcott–Hort Greek Testament, the biblical text of Chrysostom has been recognized as a crucial point in the history of the New Testament text. Hort had noted that ‘a glance at any tolerably complete apparatus criticus of the Acts or Pauline Epistles reveals the striking fact that an overwhelming proportion of the variants common to the great mass of cursive and late uncial Greek MSS are identical with the readings followed by Chrysostom (ob. 407) in the composition of his Homilies’.1 Furthermore, the lack of this predominantly ‘Syrian’ element in the texts of the Fathers before Chrysostom, and more especially before Nicea, was a crucial step in his own theory of the history of the text.2

Le verset 3. 18 de la Seconde Épître aux Corinthiens a été et est encore l'objet de beaucoup de controverses. Rappelons-en le libellé en grec, constant dans toutes les éditions critiques modernes du Nouveau Testament, Tischendorf, Westcott–Hort, Nestle, Merk, Aland: ‘Ημειδς δ πντες νακεκαλυμμνᾠ προσώπᾠ τν δóξαν Κυρíου κατοπτριℑóμεοι τν αὐτήν εἰκóνα μεταμορ-φοὑμεθα πò δóξης εἰς δóξαν καθπερ πò Κυρíου πνεὑματος. Dans ce verset, l'interprétation de deux détails en particulier a opposé, depuis le début de ce siècle, les exégètes qui, comme l'a mis récemment en évidence la savante synthèse de J. F. Collange, se sont posé une double question: (i) Le participe κατοπτριℑóμενοι signifie-t-il ‘reflétant (comme un miroir) la gloire du Seigneur’ ou ‘contemplant (comme) dans un miroir la gloire du Seigneur’? (2) La locution τήν αὐτν εἰκóνα vise-t-elle notre assimilation à la gloire de Dieu ou à celle de son image (le Christ d'après II Cor. 4. 4 et 6)?

Bien avant de poser un problème littéraire aux exégètes modernes, la pluralité et la diversité des évangiles ont préoccupé les anciens chrétiens: il y a en effet des difficultés théologiques évidentes à reconnaître comme normatifs plusieurs témoignages divergents sur une révélation unique.1

L'Apocalypse met en scène un nombre assez considérable de personnages. Quelques-uns semblent avoir une véritable histoire: on les retrouve à plusieurs reprises dans des circonstances diverses. Ainsi Dieu, l'agneau, leurs serviteurs, le voyant…D'autres personnages n'apparaissent que pour une figuration limitée (le dragon, les deux bêtes, la prostituée). D'autres enfin ne font qu'une apparition-éclair et ne sont plus jamais mentionnés par la suite: ainsi la femme, le fils et l'ange Michel au chap. 12, les deux témoins au chap. 11, le cavalier (Ap. 19), l'épouse (Ap. 21) etc….

‘With this limited area, and although surrounded by such powerful foreign nations, the two Galilees have always resisted any hostile invasion, for the inhabitants are from infancy inured to war, and have at all times been numerous; never did the men lack courage or the country men’ (War 3:41 f.). It is surprising how this general characterization of the Galileans by Josephus has so often found its way into modern writings about Galilee without any detailed study of the Vita, the one work of his where the Galileans occur more frequently than in all the others together.

The interpretation of the parable of the Sower, Mark 4. 14–20, is frequently said to be inconsistent since it seems to identify the seed which is sown both with the word and with people.1 When this inconsistency is excused it is usually in light of the lack of concern for logical consistency which characterizes Semitic parables.2 A similar shift in usage occurs in Col. 1. 6, 10 where the metaphor of ‘bearing fruit and growing’ is applied first to the gospel and then to believers.3 The similarity of this passage and Mark 4. 14–20 in terminology, shift in metaphorical usage, and focus on proper reception of the word (Col. 1. 5 ff.) may indicate that before the writing of the gospels Paul was already familiar with the parable of the Sower and its interpretation. IV Ezra also pictures as seed both men sown by God (8. 41) and God's word (9. 31).
