A chalky white, fibrous mineral, in the amygdales of Tertiary basalts from the Gobbins area, Co. Antrim, has been discovered to be a new mineral. It consists of fibrous dusters of lath-shaped crystals showing straight extinction with negative elongation. Its refractive index is ɛ 1.489, ω 1.494 (both ± 0.003) and specific gravity is 2.194 (meas.), 2.147 (calc.). The mineral is tetragonal with ɛ = c (elongation); a = 10.145, c = 9.788 Å. The strongest powder lines (in Å, intensity in brackets) are: 7.10, 4.10, 3.19(100); 3.10, 2.69(80); 5.07(50); 2.64(40). A spectrographic analysis shows major Si, Al, minor Ca, Na, Cu, and trace Fe. Two chemical and one probe analysis give the ideal formula Na4(Ca,Mg,K2)Al6Si10 O32.12H2O. The name gobbinsite (approved by the IMA Commission on New Mineral Names) is suggested after the locality. The type specimen (I7881) is preserved in the Ulster Museum.

Rotation and Weissenberg photographs of gobbinsite and garronite show doubled reflections, which are explained on the basis of submicroscopic twinning on (101). Relationship between gobbinsite and garronite is discussed and evidence is presented for the occurrence of minute amounts of a merlinoite-type mineral that forms regular intergrowths with gobbinsite and garronite.

Under the alkaline conditions expected in an intermediate-level waste repository, cellulosic material will undergo chemical hydrolysis. This will produce hydrolysis products, some of which can form soluble complexes with some radionuclides. Analyses of samples containing autoclaved tissue and cotton wool incubated in a saturated solution of Ca(OH)2 ( pH > 12) confirmed previous reports that isosaccharinic acid (ISA) is produced from these cellulose polymers at high pH. However, when inoculated with a sediment sample from a hyperalkaline site contaminated with lime-kiln waste, microbial activity was implicated in the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose and the subsequent production of acetate. This in turn led to acidification of the microcosms and a marked decrease in ISA production from the abiotic alkali hydrolysis of cellulose. DNA analyses of microbial communities present in the microcosms further support the hypothesis that bacterial activities can have a controlling influence on the formation of organic acids, including ISA, via an interplay between direct and indirect mechanisms. These and previous results imply that microorganisms could have a role in attenuating the mobility of some radionuclides in and around a geological disposal facility, via either the direct biodegradation of ISA or by catalysing cellulose fermentation and therefore preventing the formation of ISA.

Okhotskite, an Mn3+-dominant pumpellyite-group mineral, is monoclinic, A2/m, a = 8.887, b = 6.000, c = 19.55 Å, β = 97.08°, Z = 1. The formula is

(Ca7.63Na0.17K0.01)Σ7.81(Mn2.752+Mg1.10)Σ3.85(Mn4.503+Al1.87Fe1.613+Ti0.02)Σ8.00Si12.13O39.71(OH)16.29,

which simplifies to Ca8(Mn2+,Mg)4(Mn3+,Al,Fe3+)8Si12O5∂-n(OH)n. Strong lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are: 4.76(60)(004, 111), 3.87(70)(202), 2.96(100)(115, 300), 2.88(25)(022), 2.72(70)(302), 2.67(45)(3̄04, 3̄11), 2.55(45)(024, 3̄13) and 2.38(45)(304).

Its colour is deep orange with a pale orange streak and vitreous lustre. Transparent. Non-fluorescent. H6 (Mohs). Density (calc.) = 3.40 g/cm3. Optically biaxial negative, 2V(meas) = 46(5)°, 2V(calc) = 46°, dispersion indiscernible. Refractive indices: α = 1.782(5), β = 1.820(5), γ = 1.827(5). Orientation: Y = b, c∧Z = 9–14° in acute angle of β. Pleochroism is distinct: X yellow, Y and Z deep orange. Absorption: X < Y < Z.

This mineral occurs as fine prisms up to 0.2 mm long and forms aggregates in network veinlets cutting hematite ore from the Kokuriki mine in the Tokoro district, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Associated minerals are: hematite, piemontite, quartz, neotocite, bementite, apatite, Mn-oxides, inesite and rhodochrosite. The mineral is named okhotskite for the Sea of Okhotsk, along which the mine is located.

Three generations of homogeneous titanomagnetite in a hawaiite from Saint-Clément may be defined by differences in size, habit, or reflectance, and are believed to correspond to different crystallization stages of the lava. Chemical compositions were determined by electron microprobe, and by X-ray and thermomagnetic methods.

Larger crystals are of intratelluric origin and occur either as inclusions in phenocrysts of early clinopyroxene (generation 1) or separately in the groundmass (generation 2); in the latter case, they always show evidence of resorption. Post-eruptive titanomagnetite (generation 3) is smaller and so highly oxidized that it is better termed titanomaghemite. Since the maghemitization, which is a low temperature process, alters the metallic ratios (especially the Fe/Ti ratio) the metallic contents at the time of the high-temperature crystallization are exactly known only for the intratelluric titanomagnetites.

As intratelluric crystallization proceeds Ti content increases greatly (5 to 14%); Mn also increases (but slightly), A1 and Mg decrease, while results for Cr are inconclusive. Apparently these changes go on until the post-eruptive crystallization stage.

The titanium trend is contrary to common belief. However, it is in accordance with predictions from the Fe-Ti-O system and may be explained by a decrease in oxygen fugacity during magma ascent.

Specimens collected from a small lens of phlogopite-rich rock in the granulite-facies terrain of the Arunta Block, central Australia, have unusual bulk compositions and mineral assemblages. One sample consists of phlogopite enclosing blue spinel (mg 96) with minute granules of corundum and sapphirine at the margins; a second of phlogopite enclosing porphyroblasts of corundum and peraluminous sapphirine. In the first the sapphirine is close to the 7 : 9 : 3 composition; in the other it is markedly peraluminous, e.g. (Mg1.628Fe0.028)Al4.714Si0.636O10, intermediate between the 7 : 9 : 3 and 3 : 5 : 1 members. The texture suggests that this sapphirine is a stable phase in equilibrium with eastonitic phlogopite and corundum. The very potassic, very magnesian bulk composition of the rocks is attributed to potassium metasomatism of a protolith consisting of magnesian chlorite and quartz.

The crystal structure of ulrichite, CaCu2+(UO2)(PO4)2·4H2O (space group P21/c, a = 12.784(3), b = 6.996(1), c = 13.007(3)Å, β = 91.92(1)°, V = 1162.7(4)Å3, Z = 4) was redetermined using X-ray diffraction data measured from a twinned crystal with Mo-Kα radiation and a CCD area detector (2510 unique reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo), R1 = 8.8%). Ulrichite crystallizes in space group P21/c rather than C2/m reported previously. The newly determined atomic positions give reasonable coordination polyhedra. One unique Ca atom is irregularly coordinated by eight O atoms (<Ca–O> = 2.46 Å). One unique U atom shows a {2+5} coordination with characteristic bond angles and lengths (1.806(11)Å, 1.842(12)Å and five bonds between 2.252(15) and 2.441(11)Å). Furthermore, the structure contains groups in which strongly elongated CuO6 ‘octahedra’ (also describable as CuO4 squares) are corner-linked to two PO4 tetrahedra via two opposite, equatorial O atoms. Edge- and corner-sharing UO7, CaO8 and PO4 polyhedra form heteropolyhedral sheets parallel to (001) that are linked to adjacent sheets via the CuO6 ‘octahedra’ and hydrogen bonds.

A small 33 ± 0.8 Ma lamproite pluton is exposed in the midst of a 23–26 Ma basalt-rhyolite province in Middle Park, NW Colorado. It contains abundant phlogopite phenocrysts in a fine-grained groundmass of analcime pseudomorphs after leucite, biotite, potassic richterite, apatite, ilmenite and accessory diopside. The phlogopite phenocryst cores contain ∼4 wt.% TiO2, 1% Cr2O3 and 0.2% BaO. The smallest groundmass biotites have normal pleochroism but compositions unlike any previously reported, with ∼2% Al2O3, ∼8% TiO2 and F <1.5%. Apart from those elements affected by leucite alteration, both the elemental and isotopic composition of this lamproite are close to those of the Leucite Hills, Wyoming. Its Nd-isotopic model age (TDM = 1.6 Ga) is outside the Leucite Hills range but within that of other Tertiary strongly potassic magmatism in the region underlain by the Wyoming craton. Evidence from both teleseismic tomography and the mantle xenoliths within other western USA mafic ultrapotassic igneous suites shows that the total lithospheric thickness beneath NW Colorado was probably ∼150–200 km at 33 Ma, when the Middle Park lamproite was emplaced. This is an important constraint on tectonomagmatic models for the Cenozoic evolution of this northernmost part of the Rio Grande rift system.

Ontology deals with questions concerning what things exist, and how such things may be associated according to similarities and differences and related within a hierarchy. Ontology provides a rigorous way to develop a general definition of a mineral species. Properties may be divided into two principal groups: an intrinsic property is characteristic of the object and is independent of anything else; an extrinsic property depends on the relation between the object and other things. A universal is an entity that is common to all objects in a set. Here the objects are mineral samples, each entity is a specific property of these minerals, and the set of objects is all mineral samples of that mineral species. The key intrinsic properties of a mineral species are its name, its end-member formula and Z (the number of formula units in the unit cell), its space group and the bond topology of the end-member structure. These are also universals as they are common to all mineral samples belonging to that mineral species. An archetype is a pure form which embodies the fundamental characteristics of an object. Thus the archetype of a mineral species embodies the above set of universals. Real mineral samples of this mineral species are imperfect copies of that archetype, with a range of chemical composition defined by the boundaries between end-member formulae of this and other end members of the same bond topology. The result is a formal definition of a mineral species: A specific mineral species is the set of imperfect copies of the corresponding archetype and is defined by the following set of universals: name, end-member formula and Z, space group, and bond topology of the end-member structure, with the range of chemical composition limited by the compositional boundaries between end members with the same bond topology.

Itelmenite, ideally Na2CuMg2(SO4)4, was found in a fumarole of the Naboko scoria cone of the Tolbachik volcano Fissure Eruption (2012–2013), Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Itelmenite occurs as irregularly shaped grains as well as microcrystalline masses associated with anhydrite, saranchinaite, hermannjahnite, euchlorine, thénardite, aphthitalite and hematite. Itelmenite is orthorhombic, Pbca, a = 9.568(2) Å, b = 8.790(2) Å, c = 28.715(8) Å, V = 2415.0(11) Å3 and Z = 4 (from single-crystal diffraction data). The nine strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d(I)(hkl)]: 7.9614(41)(102), 7.1803(32)(004), 5.9122(64)(112), 3.8455(87)(122), 3.6292(52)(214), 3.3931(62)(215), 3.0003(44)(027), 2.9388(100)(312) and 2.4975(56)(230). The chemical composition determined by the electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): Na2O 10.77, K2O 0.20, MgO 11.10, CuO 15.38, ZnO 5.61, SO3 56.42, total 99.48. The empirical formula based on O = 32 apfu is (Na3.93K0.05)Σ3.98Mg3.12(Cu2.19Zn0.78)Σ2.97S7.97O32. The simplified formula is Na2CuMg2(SO4)4 taking into account structural data. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an agreement index R1 = 0.034 on the basis of 1855 independent observed reflections. The structure of itelmenite is based on a unique type of [A2+3(SO4)4]2– (A = Mg, Cu and Zn) heteropolyhedral framework with voids filled by Na+ cations.

Evidence of crystallization by particle attachment in synthetic materials is described in numerous contributions. However, efforts to establish the contribution of the particle attachment mechanism to inorganic crystallization in natural environments have barely begun. Here, we show, for the first time, evidence that confirms oriented particle attachment as a crystal growth mechanism that is relevant in sedimentary environments. In these natural settings, oriented particle attachment operates during the formation of highly anisotropically structured clay minerals, which constitute one of the most extensively distributed groups of minerals in the Earth's crust. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images show that the clay minerals aggregation process occurs in different manners. Smectites aggregate by semi-oriented attachment, while kaolinite, sepiolite and palygorskite aggregate by oriented attachment.

Chemical analyses, cell parameters, and optical properties are presented for seven Scottish orthopyroxenes: four from Harris, two from Scourie, and one from Belhelvie, Aberdeenshire. The compositions range from En83·6 to En55·5. Six of the orthopyroxenes are from pyroxene granulites or related rocks and the other is from a plagioclase-hypersthene hornfels: the latter mineral is notable in having 7·21% Al2O3, causing a considerable contraction in the a and b cell parameters. The alumina content of orthopyroxenes is briefly discussed. Analyses are also given for olivine and diopsidic augite from a South Harris ultrabasic gneiss and for two enderbitic pyroxene gneisses from Scourie.

Changes in the lability and local environment of Cd sorbed onto calcite, hydroxylapatite and humic acid have been investigated as a function of time (30 min–9 months) using a combination of X-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS) and isotopic dilution techniques with Cd concentrations between 1 and 1000 mmol kg –1. Enhanced X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) shows that precipitation of Cd carbonate was initially observed on calcite. Ageing of a 10 mmol kg–1 sample showed replacement of Cd in the fourth shell with Ca, indicating diffusion between the two phases had occurred. This diffusion appeared to be ongoing for a 10 mmol kg–1 sample even after 9 months of reaction. Only 20% of the Cd in a sample with 10 mmol kg–1 Cd remained labile after 6 months of reaction, suggesting a high degree of incorporation into the solid phase, in agreement with the XAS results. The XAS results for hydroxylapatite indicated that Cd is not fixed in the mineral lattice and Cd lability in a sample loaded with 10 mmol kg–1 Cd was ∼55% after 6 months of reaction. This indicates that a relatively high proportion of the Cd sorbed to hydroxylapatite remained as kinetically active surface species. Little change was observed in the local environment of Cd adsorbed on flocculated Ca-humate samples as a function of time and ∼75% of the Cd remained radio-labile after 6 months of reaction regardless of initial Cd loading. High lability is expected because incorporation into a solid matrix or surface precipitation of a Cd phase is less likely than with the mineral phases.

Techniques associated with temperature control and measurement in quench furnaces are described and a study made of calibration problems. Systematic temperature errors as great as 30°C in published results from separate laboratories are explicable. A comprehensive redetermination of temperatures of invariant equilibria in systems containing CaO, MgO, Al2O3, SiO2, Na2O, Fe-O2, has been initiated and the results to date are presented, including approximate determinations of three invariant equilibria in the system CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 involving liquid, monticellite, spinel, and two of merwinite, periclase, and forsterite, which are important in the melting of magnesia refractories, and precise determinations of the three newly recognized invariant equilibria involving liquid, spinel, diopside, and two of forsterite, melilite, and anorthite.

Dehydration of silanol and molecular water in 60 agates from 12 hosts with ages between 23 to 2717 Ma has been investigated using desiccators and high-temperature furnace heating. There are wide differences in the water data obtained under uncontrolled and fixed atmospheric water vapour pressure conditions. After agate acclimatization at 20°C and 46% relative humidity, the total water (silanol and molecular) was determined in powders and mini-cuboids by heating samples at 1200°C. Agates from hosts < 180 Ma all showed a greater mass loss using powders and demonstrate that after prolonged high-temperature heating, silanol water is partially-retained by the mini-cuboids. Desiccator dehydration of powders and slabs shows that powder preparation can produce water losses; this is particularly relevant in agates from hosts < 180 Ma. The identified problems have consequences for water quantification in agate and chalcedony using infrared or thermogravimetric techniques. Mobile and total water in agate is considered in relation to host-rock age, mogánite content and crystallite size. Links are observed between the various identified water contents allowing comment on quartz development and agate genesis. The water data also supports previous claims that agates from New Zealand and Brazil were formed long after their host.

Wesselsite, SrCu[Si4O10], is a new mineral species from the Wessels mine, Kalahari Manganese Field, South Africa, and it belongs to the gillespite group. Wesselsite is tetragonal, space group P4/ncc; the unit cell parameters, refined from Gandolfi film data, are a = 7.366(1), c = 15.574(3) Å V = 845.01 Å3. The strongest lines are (dobs/lobs/hkl) (7.79/35/002), (4.33/20/112), (3.89/20/004), (3.44/40/104), (3.33/100/202), (3.12/55/114), (3.03/50/212), (2.68/25/204), (2.61/30/220) and (2.32/30/116). Wesselsite is associated with hennomartinite, embedded in a matrix of sugilite, xonotlite, quartz and pectolite. Microprobe analyses of 111 samples show that it is the end-member of a solid solution series with effenbergerite, BaCu[Si4O10], with substitutions of Sr by Ba up to 50 mol.%. Wesselsite forms tiny subhedral plates in sizes not exceeding 50 × 50 × 5 µm, arranged in clusters of up to 200 µm. It shows a perfect cleavage parallel to {001}, has blue colour, white to light blue streak, and is uniaxial negative with ω = 1.630(2), ε = 1.590(5), strongly pleochroic from blue (ω) to pale blue (ε). The calculated density is 3.32 g cm−3, the measured density is 3.2(1) g cm−3.

The Turiy Massif, on the southern coast of the Kola Peninsula, consists of five intrusive complexes containing a variety of carbonatites, phoscorites, melilitolites, ijolites and pyroxenites. Petrographic and mineralogical studies of the different rocks show that the samples are texturally heterogeneous. Minerals including apatite, garnet, magnetite, melilite, mica and pyroxene, show systematic variations in composition relating to the rock type in which they occur. Compositional similarities and/or distinct trends are seen in the mineral compositions within the each of the pyroxenite-melilitolite, and melteigite-ijolite rock series, indicating linked petrogenetic histories within each of the two series. The carbonatites from the northern complex may be related to nearby melilitolites, but the central complex carbonatites and phosocorites do not bear any mineralogical (or isotopic) similarities to any of the silicate rocks within the massif.

Rhönite occurs in lower crustal pyroxenite xenoliths erupted in phonolite from the Mount Sidley composite volcano, Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica, as a localized breakdown product, with plagioclase, clinopyroxene, ± olivine ± Ti-magnetite + melt, of kaersutite, and as microphenocrysts (with olivine, plagioclase, clinopyroxene) in pockets of basanitic melt. Rhö nite after kaersutite has a more NaSi-rich/ CaAl-poor composition, lower Ti, and formed at higher oxidation (∼NNO) conditions than rhönite occurring as microphenocrysts in basanite. Comparison with experimentally determined rhönite stability in understaturated alkali basalt and as a reaction product after Ti-amphibole indicates that the Mount Sidley rhönite (and associated minerals) formed between 1090 and 1190°C at <0.5 kbar, presumably during temporary residence of the xenoliths in a shallow magma chamber below the volcanic edifice.

Lucchesiite, CaFe32+Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O, is a new mineral of the tourmaline supergroup. It occurs in the Ratnapura District, Sri Lanka (6°35'N, 80°35'E), most probably from pegmatites and in Mirošov near Strážek, western Moravia, Czech Republic, (49°27'49.38"N, 16°9'54.34"E) in anatectic pegmatite contaminated by host calc-silicate rock. Crystals are black with a vitreous lustre, conchoidal fracture and grey streak. Lucchesiite has a Mohs hardnessof ∼7 and a calculated density of 3.209 g/cm3 (Sri Lanka) to 3.243 g/cm3 (Czech Republic). In plane-polarized light, lucchesiite is pleochroic (O = very dark brown and E = light brown) and uniaxial (–). Lucchesiite is rhombohedral, space group R3m, a ≈ 16.00 Å, c ≈ 7.21 Å, V ≈ 1599.9 Å3, Z = 3. The crystal structure of lucchesiite was refined to R1 ≈ 1.5% using ∼2000 unique reflections collected with MoKα X-ray intensity data. Crystal-chemical analysis for the Sri Lanka (holotype) and Czech Republic (cotype) samples resulted in the empirical formulae, respectively: X(Ca0.69Na0.30K0.02)∑1.01Y(Fe1.442+Mg0.72Al0.48Ti0.334+V0.023+Mn0.013+Zn0.01)∑3.00Z(Al4.74Mg1.01Fe0.253+)∑6.00[T(Si5.85Al0.15)∑6.00O18](BO3)3V(OH)3W[O0.69F0.24(OH)0.07]∑1.00and X(Ca0.49Na0.45□0.05 K0.01)∑1.00Y(Fe1.142+Fe0.953+Mg0.42Al0.37Mn0.03Ti0.084+Zn0.01)∑3.00Z(Al5.11Fe0.383+Mg0.52)∑6.00[T(Si5.88Al0.12)∑6.00O18](BO3)3V[(OH)2.66O0.34]∑3.00W(O0.94F0.06)∑1.00.

Lucchesiite is an oxy-species belonging to the calcic group of the tourmaline supergroup. The closest end-member composition of a valid tourmaline species is that of feruvite, to which lucchesiite is ideally related by the heterovalent coupled substitution ZAl3++O1O2– ↔ ZMg2+ + O1(OH)1–. The new mineral was approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (IMA 2015-043).

Five smithsonite samples from locations in Germany, Mexico and Namibia have been investigated with cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy and trace-element analyses. As with other carbonates, the CL properties of smithsonite are mainly controlled by Mn2+- and Fe2+-incorporation, because these elements are the most important activator and quencher species, respectively. Additional trace elements may have either a quenching effect (Cu) or have only small or no influence (Ca, Pb). A linear correlation exists between the Mn content and the intensity of the Mn-emission band in smithsonite, which can be quantified, if the Cl intensity is related to the number of moles of Mn rather than the weight fraction. A correlation between the Cl intensity and the Mn concentration, which is valid for all trigonal carbonates, is obtained from the published results of calcite, dolomite and smithsonite. Matrix effects due to the different chemical composition of the carbonate minerals seem to be of lesser importance.
