Tobermorite minerals vary in some proper lies, notably in whether or not unidimensional lattice shrinkage occurs by about 300 °C to give a 9·3 form; specimens that do this are called normal, and ones that do not, anomalous. Data are compared for thirteen natural tobermorites and the extent to which normal or anomalous character is related to other properties is examined. The most definite correlations found are with chemical composition and morphology. The conditions of formation of normal and anomalous tobermorites are discussed in the light of synthetic evidence.

The introduction of a fifth amphibole group, the Na-Ca-Mg-Fe-Mn-Li group, defined by 0.50 < B(Mg,Fe2+,Mn2+,Li) < 1.50 and 0.50 ≤ B(Ca,Na) ≤ 1.50 a.f.p.u. (atoms per formula unit), with members whittakerite and ottoliniite, has been required by recent discoveries of B(LiNa) amphiboles. This, and other new discoveries, such as sodicpedrizite (which, here, is changed slightly, but significantly, from the original idealized formula), necessitate amendments to the IMA 1997 definitions of the Mg-Fe-Mn-Li, calcic, sodic-calcic and sodic groups. The discovery of obertiite and the finding of an incompatibility in the IMA 1997 subdivision of the sodic group, requires further amendments within the sodic group. All these changes, which have IMA approval, are summarized.

Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy show that normal, slightly turbid alkali feldspars from many plutonic rocks contain high concentrations of micropores, from ∼1 µm to a few nm in length, typically 0.1 µm. There may be 109 pores mm−3 and porosities as high as 4.75 vol.% have been observed, although ∼1% is typical. Only ‘pristine’ feldspars, which are dark coloured when seen in the massive rock, such as in larvikite and some rapakivi granites, are almost devoid of pores. Weathering enlarges prexisting pores and exploits sub-regularly spaced edge dislocations which occur in semicoherent microperthites, but the underlying textures which lead to skeletal grains in soils are inherited from the high temperature protolith. Most pores are devoid of solid inclusions, but a variety of solid particles has been found. Although the presence of fluid in pores cannot usually be demonstrated directly, crushing experiments have shown that Ar and halogens reside in fluids. Some pores are ‘negative crystals’, often with re-entrants defined by the {110} Adularia habit, while others have curved surfaces often tapering to thin, cusp-shaped apices. The variable shape of pores accounts for the ability of some pores to retain fluid although the texture is elsewhere micropermeable, as shown by 18O exchange experiments.

Apart from rare, primary pores in pristine feldspar, pore development is accompanied by profound recrystallization of the surrounding microtexture, with partial loss of coherency in cryptoperthites. This leads to marked ‘deuteric coarsening’ forming patch and vein perthite, and replacement of ‘tweed’ orthoclase by twinned microcline. The Ab- and Or-rich phases in patch perthite are made up of discrete subgrains and the cuspate pores often develop at triple-junctions between them. Coarsened lamellar and vein perthites are composed of microporous subgrain textures. These ‘unzipping’ reactions result from fluid-feldspar interactions, at T <450°C in hypersolvus syenites and T < 350°C in a subsolvus granites, and are driven by elastic strain-energy in coherent cryptoperthites and in tweed textures. Further textural change may continue to surface temperatures. In salic igneous rocks there is a general connection between turbidity and the type of mafic mineral present; pristine alkali feldspars occur in salic igneous rocks with a preponderance of anhydrous mafic phases.

Because alkali feldspar is so abundant (and larger, 10 μm pores have previously been described in plagioclase), intracrystal porosity is a non-trivial feature of a large volume of the middle and upper crust. The importance of pores in the following fields is discussed: 39Ar/40Ar dating and ‘thermochronometry’; oxygen exchange; Rb and Sr diffusion; weathering; experimental low-temperature dissolution; development of secondary porosity and diagenetic albitization; leachable sources of metals; nuclear waste isolation; deformation; seismic anisotropy; electrical conductivity. Important questions concern the temperature range of the development of the textures and their stability during burial and transport into the deeper crust.

Analytical precision is vital in the interpretation of stable isotope data collected by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) given the small analysis volumes and the small magnitude of natural isotopic variations. The observed precision of a set of measurements is represented by the standard deviation(precision of an individual measurement) or the standard error of the mean (precision of the mean value). The SIMS data show both systematic variations with time and random Poisson variability, but the former largely cancel out when data for two different isotopes are expressed as a ratio. The precision of a SIMS isotope ratio routinely matches that predicted by Poisson counting statistics and can approach that of conventional bulk analysis techniques for counting times of several hours. All sample analyse must be calibrated for instrumental mass fractionation using SIMS analyses of a standard material. There is often a gradual drift in the mass fractionation with time, but this can be modelled by least-squares regression of the standard isotope ratios. Drift in the sample analyses is eliminated by using the relevant point on this regression line to calibrate each sample. The final precision of a corrected isotope ratio must take into account the scatter in both the sample and the standard data.

Charoite, ideally (K,Sr,Ba,Mn)15–16(Ca,Na)32[(Si70(O,OH)180)](OH,F)4.0·nH2O, a rare mineral from the Murun massif in Yakutiya, Russia, was studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy, precession electron diffraction and the newly developed technique of automated electron-diffraction tomography. The structure of charoite (a = 31.96(6) Å, b = 19.64(4) Å, c = 7.09(1) Å, β = 90.0(1)°, V = 4450(24) Å3, space group P21/m) was solved ab initio by direct methods from 2878 unique observed reflections and refined to R1/wR2 = 0.17/0.21. The structure can be visualized as being composed of three different dreier silicate chains: a double dreier chain, [Si6O17]10–; a tubular loop-branched dreier triple chain, [Si12O30]12–; and a tubular hybrid dreier quadruple chain, [Si17O43]18–. The silicate chains occur between ribbons of edge-sharing Ca and Na-octahedra. The chains of tetrahedra and the ribbons of octahedra extend parallel to the z axis. K+, Ba2+, Sr2+, Mn2+ and H2O molecules lie inside tubes and channels of the structure. On the basis of microprobe analyses and occupancy refinement of the cation sites, the crystal chemical formula of this charoite can be written as (Z = 1): (K13.88Sr1.0Ba0.32Mn0.36)Σ15.56(Ca25.64Na6.36)Σ32 [(Si6O11(O,OH)6)2(Si12O18(O,OH)12)2(Si17O25(O,OH)18)2](OH,F)4.0·3.18H2O.

The concentrations of Br in potable groundwaters in the United Kingdom range from 60 to 340 µg 1-1. The occurrence of Br is described in terms of the Br/Cl weight ratio which enables small changes in bromide concentrations to be assessed in terms of salinity. Median values of Br/Cl in groundwaters range from 2.60 to 5.15 × 10−3 compared with a sea water ratio of 3.47× 10−3. In recent shallow groundwaters the Br/Cl ratio is rather variable in response to a range of natural and anthropogenic inputs (marine and industrial aerosols, industrial and agricultural chemicals including road salt). Some slight enrichment in Br/Cl also occurs naturally during infiltration as a result of biogeochemical processes.

Evolution of Br/Cl along groundwater flow lines reflects the sources of increasing salinity; either the influence of marine sedimentary formations or evaporites. The groundwaters in the Triassic sandstones of the English Midlands show significant Br depletion due to the evaporite source, in contrast to groundwaters in Cumbria. Br/Cl ratios in the Sherwood Sandstone of the East Midlands mainly reflect the natural input sources and can be used to help understand the palaeohydrology.

Magmas undergoing shear are prime examples of flows that involve the transport of solids and gases by a separate (silicate melt) carrier phase. Such flows are called multiphase, and have attracted much attention due to their important range of engineering applications. Where the volume fraction of the dispersed phase (crystals) is large, the influence of particles on the fluid motion becomes significant and must be taken into account in any explanation of the bulk behaviour of the mixture. For congested magma deforming well in excess of the dilute limit (particle concentrations >40% by volume), sudden changes in the effective or relative viscosity can be expected. The picture is complicated further by the fact that the melt phase is temperature- and shear-rate-dependent. In the absence of a constitutive law for the flow of congested magma under an applied force, it is far from clear which of the many hundreds of empirical formulae devised to predict the rheology of suspensions as the particle fraction increases with time are best suited. Some of the more commonly used expressions in geology and engineering are reviewed with an aim to home in on those variables key to an improved understanding of magma rheology. These include a temperature, compositional and shear-rate dependency of viscosity of the melt phase with the shear-rate dependency of the crystal (particle) packing arrangement. Building on previous formulations, a new expression for the effective (relative) viscosity of magma is proposed that gives users the option to define a packing fraction range as a function of shear stress. Comparison is drawn between processes (segregation, clustering, jamming), common in industrial slurries, and structures seen preserved in igneous rocks. An equivalence is made such that congested magma, viewed in purely mechanical terms as a high-temperature slurry, is an inherently nonequilibrium material where flow at large Pe´clet numbers may result in shear thinning and spontaneous development of layering.

Micro-inclusions (1 –10 μm) in 55 diamonds of cubic habit from the Udachnaya kimberlite pipe have been studied using vibrational spectroscopy. This has revealed a multiphase assemblage in cuboid diamonds from the Udachnaya kimberlite pipe. This assemblage includes carbonates, olivine, apatite, graphite, water and silicate glasses. The micro-inclusions preserve the high internal pressure and give confidence that the original materials were trapped during growth of the host diamond. The internal pressures, extrapolated to mantle temperatures, lie within the stability field of diamond and the relatively low temperatures are typical for the formation of cuboid diamonds. In contrast to previously reported data for African diamonds, the micro-inclusions in the cuboids from Udachnaya are extremely carbonatitic in composition (H2O/(H2O+CO2) ≈5 –20%) with the observed assemblage of microinclusions similar to some types of carbonatites. The low water and silica content testify that the material in the micro-inclusions of the Udachnaya diamonds was near-solidus carbonatitic melt. Vibrational spectroscopy has provided the evidence of carbonatitic melts in cuboid diamonds.

Vivid blue inclusions in white whewellite or weddellite, occurring within the medulla of four lichen species growing on copper-bearing rocks, have been identified as the hydrated copper oxalate, moolooite, CuC2O4. nH2O (n ∼ 0.4–0.7), by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The mineral is believed to have been formed by reaction between oxalic acid secreted by the lichen and ground or surface water containing copper.

This paper gives a revision and expansion of an earlier interpretation of the thermal expansion behaviour of the framework silicates. The partially-collapsed and ideal fully-expanded structures of quartz, cristobalite, and sodalite are characterized by the geometric relationship between the angle of rotation of their tetrahedra from the ideal fully-expanded state, their cell parameters, and the length of the tetrahedron edge. Their thermal expansion behaviour is interpreted as due mainly to the effect of the rotation of the tetrahedra towards the fully-expanded state modified by anisotropic thermal motion of the framework oxygens and distortion of the tetrahedra from a regular form. With the leucite and sodalite groups the significance of the interframework cations is discussed.

The reliability and utility of diffuse reflectance spectra are briefly but critically reviewed. The results of measurements of diffuse reflectance over the wavelength range 200 < λ < 2500 nm are reported for wüstite, magnetite, hematite, maghemite, ilmenite, ulvöspinel, and α-FeO · OH (goethite), β-FeO 7sd OH, γ-FeO · OH (lepidocrocite), and δ-FeO · OH. The spectra have been assigned by reference to simplified molecular-orbital energy-level diagrams derived from recent SCF-Xα calculations.

The specular reflectances reported in the Quantitative Data File (Henry, 1977) are related to the diffuse reflectance spectra in a rational way. Minerals that absorb strongly throughout the visible display little dispersion of specular reflectance, and their powders are dark (wüstite, magnetite, ilmenite, ulvöspinel); those that absorb much more strongly in the near ultraviolet than in the visible have specular reflectances that decrease monotonically from blue to red according to a simple dispersion relation derived by combining the Sellmeier dispersion and Fresnel reflexion equations; their powders are strongly coloured (hematite, maghemite, lepidocrocite, goethite) and their optical anisotropy is closely related to crystal structure.

Coexisting calcium-rich and calcium-poor pyroxenes have been separated from the gabbros and ferrogabbros of the Skaergaard layered basic intrusion and chemically analysed. Nine new analyses of augites, three of inverted pigeonites, and one of orthopyroxene are presented, together with optical properties. The trend of crystallization of the augites is different from that drawn by previous investigators. The stages at which the orthopyroxene and pigeonite begin and cease to erystallize are defined, and the sub-solidus exsolution and inversion textures of the pigeonites are examined in detail. The characters of the exsolution textures and the degree of pigeonite inversion (monoclinic to orthorhombic pyroxene) are shown to change gradually with height in the intrusion, and are related to a gradual change in the interval between the temperatures of crystallization and inversion.

The kinetics and mechanisms of pentlandite [(Fe,Ni)9S8] exsolution from the monosulphide solid solution [or MSS (Fe,Ni)1−xS] have been studied by synthesis and annealing experiments in part of the Fe-Ni-S system particularly relevant to sulphide nickel orebodies. This experimental work has been combined with the examination of the compositions and textures of pyrrhotine-pentlandite intergrowths from a variety of ore deposits. Isothermal annealing of MSS compositions with varying M:S and Fe:Ni ratios at 400 °C shows the formation of a sequence of textures which depend for their full development chiefly on initial M:S ratio and annealing time. The full sequence of textures starts with heterogeneous nucleation of pentlandite at MSS grain boundaries, the growth of these blebs to form ‘rims’, nucleation of finer bladed particles arranged ‘en échelon’ along fractures, and, finally, homogeneous nucleation of fine orientated pentlandite lamellae. Using the information from the annealing experiments, the inter-growths produced by cooling in the natural ores are interpreted using a simplified Time-Temperature-Transformation Model.

Major and trace element and Sr, Nd and O isotopic data are presented for ferrobasalts, icelandites, rhyolites, mixed pumices and silicic xenoliths of the 1875 eruption of Askja. Trace element modelling and Sr and Nd data largely confirm previous major element calculations that fractional crystallization was dominant in the generation of the basalt-ferrobasalt-icelandite-rhyolite suite. Relative enrichment in Rb (and Th and U?), depletion in Cs, and low values of δ18O/16O, in the rhyolites are not explained by this mechanism alone. The silicic magmas were selectively contaminated by diffusion from partially molten granitic wall rocks, now found as xenoliths in the eruptive products, the process being particularly marked by lower δ18O and Cs/Rb ratios in the rhyolites than in the associated basalts. This is the first record of a combined fractional crystallization-selective contamination process in an Icelandic silicic complex.

The dacite of El Joyazo contains abundant metapelitic xenoliths. These can be divided into two main types: garnet-biotite-sillimanite and spinel-cordierite xenoliths. In the xenoliths the widespread occurrence of rhyolitic glass as interstitial films, foliation-parallel layers and primary melt inclusions in all mineral phases indicates that these assemblages developed in the presence of a melt phase, i.e. during anatexis. The composition of the interstitial glass is comparable to that of the melt inclusions, suggesting that melt was locally produced. Phase equilibria indicate that anatexis occurred at P-T conditions of 5–7 kbar and 850±50°C.

Several microstructural lines of evidence show that melt extraction was assisted by deformation during foliation development, and that on the scale of the xenoliths (up to 50 cm) melt escaped mainly by flow along foliation planes. The development of a syn-anatectic foliation also suggests that metapelitic rocks were involved in high-grade metamorphism and partial melting prior to fragmentation and dispersion in the host dacite.

Mass balance calculations, based on the chemical composition of interstitial glass and melt inclusions in minerals, the bulk xenoliths and representative samples of potential pelitic sources support a model wherein the xenoliths represent restites after the extraction of 30 to 55 wt.% melt from graphitic metapelite protoliths similar to the rocks constituting the surrounding Alpujarride metamorphic complex.

The need in geology for in situ U-Pb age determinations of minerals is illustrated by two examples: the internal age dispersion developed within the zircon SL13 shortly after original crystallization, and the occurrence within minerals of old cores and later overgrowths. SL13 contains rare μm-sized patches of unsupported radiogenic Pb and a mainly bimodal distribution of 206Pb/238U ages otherwise. Both observations are consistent with original crystallization at 580 Ma and Pb loss at 565 Ma. Age precision is controlled by the ions counted for radiogenic Pb, and varies with instrumental sensitivity, age and U contents of the target. Laser-ablation ICPMS has similar spatial resolution and sensitivity to SIMS but consumes more sample because of much greater hole-depth in practice. Like SIMS, the measured Pb+/U+ is biased and also changes with depth so comparison with a standard mineral is necessary. Analyses of reference zircons reported here indicate that the reproducibility of Pb/U ages by ICPMS is limited by residual bias, not ion counting errors. For multipurpose ICPMS at least, the Hg background at mass 204 prohibits the measurement of 204Pb for common Pb estimation. A third micro-analytical method, ‘CHIME’, and future developments in SIMS and ICPMS are discussed briefly.

Possible evolutionary paths of alkali-rich carbonatite magma may be related to the production of sodic and potassic fenites. It is concluded that the latter are generated not from separate Na- and K-rich carbonatites, but by the earlier preferential loss of Na from a sodi-potassic carbonatite magma. Trends of both Fe and Mg enrichment in carbonatites are illustrated from a number of centres, and ascribed to crystal fractionation, although metasomatism may be partly responsible. Current nomenclature of carbonatites is unsatisfactory and a division into sövites, magnesiocarbonatites and ferrocarbonatites is proposed, based on rock chemistry.

Kinetic models and rate equations for polymorphic reconstructive phase transformations in polycrystalline aggregates are usually based on the assumptions that (a) the product phase nucleates on grain boundaries in the reactant phase and (b) growth rates of the product phase remain constant with time at fixed P-T. Recent observations of experimentally-induced transformations between (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 olivine (α) and its high pressure polymorphs, wadsleyite (β) and ringwoodite (γ), demonstrate that both these assumptions can be invalid, thus complicating the extrapolation of experimental kinetic data. Incoherent grain boundary nucleation appears to have dominated in most previous experimental studies of the α–β–γ transformations because of the use of starting materials with small (<10–20 µm) grain sizes. In contrast, when large (0.6 mm) olivine single crystals are reacted, intracrystalline nucleation of both β and γ becomes the dominant mechanism, particularly when the P-T conditions significantly overstep the equilibrium boundary. At pressures of 18–20 GPa intracrystalline nucleation involves (i) the formation of stacking faults in the olivine, (ii) coherent nucleation of γ-lamellae on these faults and (iii) nucleation of β on γ. In other experiments, intracrystalline nucleation is also observed during the β-γ transformation. In this case coherent nucleation of γ appears to occur at the intersections of dislocations with (010) stacking faults in β, which suggests that the nucleation rate is stress dependent. Reaction rims of β/γ form at the margins of the olivine single crystals by grain boundary nucleation. Measurements of growth distance as a function of time indicate that the growth rate of these rims decreases towards zero as transformation progresses. The growth rate slows because of the decrease in the magnitude of the Gibbs free energy (stored elastic strain energy) that develops as a consequence of the large volume change of transformation. On a longer time scale, growth kinetics may be controlled by viscoelastic relaxation.

Arsenic mobilization and Fe(III) reduction in acetate-amended sediments collected from a range of depths from an aquifer with elevated groundwater arsenic concentrations in West Bengal were monitored over a 1 month period. Significant arsenic release was noted in sediment collected from 24 m and 45 m depth, with some Fe(III) reduction also observed in the 24 m sample. The structure of the microbial communities present in the sediments prior to incubation showed marked differences down the sediment column. Profiling of the microbial community in the 24 m and 45 m samples revealed a relatively complex make-up, with Acinetobacter species comprising the bulk of the 24 m sedimentary bacterial population, but no previously characterized As(V)-reducers were detected in either sample.

Raman spectroscopy was assessed for its ability to rapidly identify asbestos phases by submitting the amphiboles anthophyllite, amosite, crocidolite and tremolite to spectroscopic analysis. All the phases were characterized by using XRD, SEM, TEM (CTEM, SAED), AEM and EDS techniques. This study demonstrates that accurate identification of the mineralogical phase can be attained by analysing the position in the Raman spectrum of the bands corresponding to the symmetric stretching modes (vs) and to the antisymmetric stretching modes (vas) of the different Si—O linkages. Raman spectroscopy thus proves to be an effective technique for rapidly distinguishing the different fibrous minerals examined.
