Ortho- and clinopyroxenes within partially-hydrated harzburgites from Elba and Val di Cecina (Italy) show lamellar exsolution textures and variable replacement by biopyriboles, talc-chlorite-serpentine mixed layers and serpentine. Chemical and geothermometric data suggest that the pyroxenes crystallized at 1240–1051°C, followed by subsolidus exsolution at slightly lower T (1145–1025°C for clinopyroxene lamellae + orthopyroxene matrix pairs and a 1033–982°C range for orthopyroxene lamellae + clinopyroxene matrix pairs).

Investigation by transmission electron microscopy of exsolved enstatite and augite reveals a multistage hydration process. The first stage (highest T, probably in the amphibole stability field) leads to the formation of biopyribole lamellae within exsolved augite, leaving the enstatite matrix unaffected. The second stage (~500–300°C) corresponds to the topotactic replacement of enstatite by layer silicates (talc + chlorite + serpentine, with (001)layer silicates parallel to (100)enstatite). Enstatite is also replaced by randomly oriented, poorly crystalline serpentine. The last hydration stage (<300°C) corresponds to the disappearence of augite and recrystallization of serpentine, leading to completely hydrated bastites with random lizardite lamellae, polygonal serpentine and minor chrysotile.

Brunogeierite, Fe2GeO4, a = 8.4127(7) Å, V = 595.4(1) Å3, is a rare germanate spinel from Tsumeb, Namibia. Its structure has been refined to an R index of 2.2%. The oxygen parameter, u, is 0.2466(1), indicating nearly ideal cubic close-packing of oxygen atoms. There is exact agreement between the observed a unit-cell dimension and that calculated from the observed Ge–O and Fe–O bond lengths. The cations Ge and Fe are fully ordered at tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites, respectively, in keeping with synthetic germanate spinels, all of which are fully-ordered normal spinels.

Two new occurrences of Zn-rich minerals are described from the SM6 lujavrite unit of the Motzfeldt alkaline centre, South Greenland. Zinc and beryllium complexes in the magma gave rise to the formation of interstitial grains of genthelvite (Zn4Be3Si3O12S), identified in samples by strong green cathodoluminescence. It is suggested that subsequent metasomatism leached Be from the genthelvite, giving rise to the formation of associated willemite (Zn2SiO4).

Moraskoite, a new natural phosphate of composition Na2Mg(PO4)F, has been found in the Morasko IAB-MG iron meteorite. The new phosphate occurs in a graphite-troilite inclusion enclosed in a kamacite-taenite matrix. Associated minerals in the inclusions are chlorapatite, buchwaldite, brianite, merrillite, a new phosphate phase of composition Na4MgCa3(PO4)4, chromite, enstatite (bronzite), kosmochlor, kosmochlor–augite, olivine, albite, orthoclase, quartz, cohenite, schreibersite, nickelphosphide, altaite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, daubreelite, djerfischerite, whitlockite and native Cu. The inclusions are rimmed by a schreibersite-cohenite halo. Moraskoite forms aggregates up to 1.5 mm in size, with individual grains 20–300 μm across. It is colourless and transparent, with a white streak and vitreous lustre; fluorescence is weak blue in ultraviolet radiation (254 and 360 nm); hardness is 4–5; it has irregular, conchoidal fracture and cleavage is rarely observed. Calculated density (using the empirical formula) is 2.925 g cm–3. The moraskoite structure (Pbcn, a = 5.2117(10), b = 13.711(3), c = 11.665(2) Å, V = 833.6(3) Å3 and Z = 8) is similar to that of its synthetic analogue. The strongest diffraction lines of the moraskoite powder diffraction pattern are as follows (dhkl, I): 3.909(75), 3.382(52), 2.955(90), 2.606(100), 2.571(96), 2.545(68), 1.691 (67). In the Raman spectrum, the following characteristic bands are distinguished (cm–1, strong bands bold): 1114, 1027, 962, 589, 438, 336, 308, 279, 262, 244, 193, 184, 147 and 131. The Raman data prove the absence of H2O and CO2. Moraskoite is interpreted as being a primary phosphate, which crystallized together with graphite, troilite and other accessories inside the nodule.

Curie temperatures indicating non-titaniferous magnetite are common in Icelandic basalts of all ages, especially Tertiary ones. Yet, microprobe analyses of such samples have shown high titanium in the magnetite. To resolve this paradox, and the mechanism at work, the magnetic mineral fraction of eight basalt samples with Js-T curves characteristic for pure magnetite was subjected to a multi-disciplinary analysis including Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. In most of the samples titanium in the magnetite, as analysed with the microprobe, ranged between 16 and 28 wt.%, indicating submicroscopic solvus exsolution in the titanomagnetite, beyond the power of resolution for the microprobe. More unexpectedly in view of the reversible Js-T curves, Mössbauer spectroscopy showed appreciable proportion of maghemite in the magnetic fraction. A three-stage mechanism is proposed for the formation of the mineral assemblages observed: (1) limited high-temperature oxyexsolution; (2) solvus exsolution during low-temperature hydrothermal alteration; and (3) maghemitization of the magnetite. Finally, the maghemite may transform to hematite with time. It is concluded that maghemite is much more common in Icelandic rocks than hitherto believed.

It has long been known that if a diamond is heated in pure oxygen, or even in air, to a temperature of about 700° C. or higher (depending on the initial quality of the diamond), it will be wholly or partially oxidized to CO or CO2, but that if the diamond is heated in the absence of oxygen—preferably in vacuo—to a temperature of about 1500° C. or higher (again depending on the initial quality of the diamond), it will be wholly or partially converted to graphite. For complete conversion the graphite is always poly crystalline. The partial conversion of diamond to graphite is, however, of considerable interest, because when graphite forms on a single crystal of diamond it exhibits a strong preferred orientation.

Retrograde metamorphism of gneisses and pegmatites leads in part to the destruction of feldspar and its replacement by late-stage lobate myrmekite and muscovite. Reactions promoted by retrogression suggest a range in volume of quartz production that may supplement that developed by exsolution and lead to deviations from the strict proportionality relationship suggested by previous workers. There is no need, however, to propose that quartz in myrmekite originates by constriction of pre-existing quartz within exsolved albite.

Samples from a traverse across the Blå Måne Sø perthosite unit in the Tugtutôq Central Complex of the Gardar province, South Greenland have been examined for cathodoluminescence characteristics, microporosity and δ18O isotopic values. Reddening of cathodoluminescence colours in alkali feldspars (normally blue) from the unit may be correlated with increased microporosity of the feldspars as determined using scanning electron microscopy. δ18O values of all samples lie within the range of values expected of juvenile fluids, independent of the level of alteration indicated by cathodoluminescence studies.

Observations are consistent with previous suggestions that levels of alkali feldspar microporosity and levels of fluid alteration (as determined by cathodoluminescence of alkali feldspars) are related phenomena. Oxygen isotope ratios suggest that the fluid is largely juvenile in origin, with, perhaps, some meteoric (low δ18O) component.

Alunogen and meta-alunogen are the dominant phases present in transient sulphate efflorescences that are the latest products of the alteration of ignimbrite country rocks in the long-lived Te Kopia geothermal field. Meta-alunogen pseudomorphs alunogen and both species occur as white, fibrous, tangled masses, as prismatic, parallel growths, and as thin, platy, crystals, 8–15 μm across, that coalesce in an open cellular network. Small (<2 mm diam.) spherical aggregates of radiating, acicular halotrichite (Fe0.51Mg0.49Al2(SO4)4.22H2O), potash alum, mirabilite, melanterite and tschermigite are present locally. The cations needed to form these minerals derive from the host rocks with the exception of sulphur and ammonia that come from H2S and NH3 gases ascending with steam. The particular efflorescence assemblage reflects the prevailing conditions and ionic activities of a local micro-environment. Kaolinite formed by acid sulphate alteration is now being altered by steam to yield alunogen. In turn, alunogen can react with silica, or co-dissociate with silicic acid, to form kaolinite. The alternating dissolution and reprecipitation of kaolinite and alunogen moves aluminium in and through the surficial environment at Te Kopia.

The weathering of biotite in some freely drained soils developed from a biotite-rich quartz gabbro near Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, has been studied. Using a combination of X-ray, chemical, differential thermal, infra-red, and optical techniques, it was found that the biotite weathers to an intergrade aluminous vermiculite-chlorite together with zones of kaolinite and gibbsite. The crystallographic axes of biotite and included kaolinite are common and parallel and it is proposed that both kaolinite and gibbsite zones crystallized epitaxially within opened out cleavage spaces of the host biotite. The development of kaolinite and gibbsite in this manner could have occurred relatively quickly and the significance of this with regard to generalized pedogenic weathering reactions of biotite is discussed.

An X-ray and chemical examination of deweylites reveals that they are intimate mixtures of very poorly ordered trioctahedral 2:1 and 1:1 layer silicates. The 2:1 mineral exhibits no swelling in the presence of ethylene glycol or water and is best described as an extremely fine-grained and highly disordered form of talc, for which the term kerolite is often used. Stevensite is not a component of deweylites. The 1:1 component most closely resembles a disordered chrysotile.

Evaluation of the chemical data, including values for H2O +, shows that both end-members are hydrated to various degrees. This hydration is most probably attributable to the presence of water molecules and hydroxyls associated with the large surface areas and unbalanced surface bonds. Formulae for the end-members are approximately R3Si4O10(OH)2·0·3 0·7 H2O and R3Si2O3(OH)4·0·3–0·7 H2O where R is principally Mg, but samples with more or less H2O are entirely possible due to variations in crystallinity. No specific formula can be given to deweylites as they are mixtures with variable proportions of the components. The name is useful, however, as a field or ‘box’ term, similar to the use of garnierite and limonite.

In most documented occurrences, violarite (FeNi2S4) occurs as a product of the supergene alteration of primary pentlandite or millerite. Earlier experimental phase relations studies predicted the possible existence of a stable violarite–pentlandite tie line, though there has been little field evidence supporting this hypothesis, and the preferred topology in the Ni-Fe-S system involves a pyrite–millerite tie line. This paper documents the occurrence of violarite-pentlandite±pyrite assemblages which, on the basis of mineral chemistry and textural evidence, appear to be hypogene. Primary cobaltian violarite (with 2.1–13.2 wt.% Co) occurs as lamellae in pentlandite in the MKD5 nickel sulphide orebody at Mount Keith, central Western Australia. These lamellae are interpreted to be of exsolution origin. Cobalt is preferentially partitioned into violarite, resulting in high Ni:Co ratios in the associated pentlandite relative to pentlandite in violarite-free assemblages. Hypogene violarite-millerite±pentlandite assemblages were also noted. In all hypogene assemblages, violarite differs in both textural and mineral chemical characteristics from supergene violarite from the upper portions of the MKD5 orebody. The implications of the assemblages for the known low-temperature phase relations in the Ni-Fe-S-(Co) system are discussed.

Detrital chrome-spinels are contaminant grains within ilmenite concentrates produced from heavy-mineral deposits along the coast of southeast Africa. The presence of even minor levels of chromia in the predominantly ilmenite-rich concentrates, downgrades their market value as potential feedstocks for the production of titania pigment. An understanding of their composition can assist in their removal from the ilmenite concentrates.

Compositions from a database of close to 900 chrome-spinel analyses shows the major element components and their ranges (in wt.%) are: Cr: 0.4-45.3, Al: 0.0-31.0, Fe: 8.5-69.6 and Mg: 0.0-12.2. Minor components include Ti: 0.1-11.4 and Zn: 0.0-13.7.

The chrome-spinel data fall into two compositionally distinct groups. The first group of spinels is dominated by a strong trend reflecting the mutual substitution between Al3+ and Cr3+ in the spinel structure. The second group of spinels is characterized by compositions containing abundant Fe3O4magnetite component. The clear division between chrome-spinel compositional types indicates the grains are derived from at least two chemically dissimilar provenances.

The compositional differences between the chrome-spinel groups has a positive impact on subsequent ilmenite upgrading treatments as the spinels which contain the highest magnetite component are easily removed via low-intensity magnetic separation procedures.

The structure of amorphous silica has frequently been compared with its crystalline counterparts in an attempt to understand the glass structure beyond short-range correlations. This paper presents results from neutron total scattering measurements of several polymorphs of silica and shows how these can be used to make a direct, quantitative comparison of amorphous and crystalline forms. It is found that the glass is similar to HP-tridymite and β-cristobalite, both dynamically-disordered crystalline phases of silica, but only out to distances ∼7.5 Å, beyond which the structures diverge. This is too small to validate a microcrystallite theory of glass structure. It is the average 180° Si–O–Si linkage in these two crystalline phases which gives them the flexibility for their instantaneous disordered structure to resemble the quenched (static) glass structure.

Pyrrhotites in polished sections from more than twenty stratabound massive sulphide and magmatic nickel-copper deposits in Norway were studied under the microscope using the magnetic colloid method. In both types of deposits, two distinct styles of intergrowths between monoclinic and hexagonal pyrrhotites were found: crystallographically-controlled lamellar intergrowths and fissure-controlled irregular intergrowths.

Lamellar intergrowths consist of crystallographically oriented monoclinic lamellae occurring in a hexagonal matrix and were produced originally by exsolution from hexagonal pyrrhotite on cooling. Irregular intergrowths comprise blades and patches of monoclinic pyrrhotite occurring along fissures and grain boundaries of hexagonal pyrrhotite, and were formed by interactions between hexagonal grains and sulphur-rich hydrothermal solutions.

Increase in lamella thickness and spacing, development of lamella zonations, wedge-shaped composite ends, boxworks and composite lamellae were caused by progressive lamellae coarsening and maturation during natural annealing, which could have been promoted by anisotropic stress. Metamorphic recrystallization and annealing tend to homogenize pyrrhotite and erase preexisting exsolution lamellae.

Dalnegroite, ideally Tl4Pb2(As12Sb8)Σ20S34, is a new mineral from Lengenbach, Binntal, Switzerland. It occurs as anhedral to subhedral grains up to 200 μm across, closely associated with realgar, pyrite, Sb-rich seligmanite in a gangue of dolomite. Dalnegroite is opaque with a submetallic lustre and shows a brownish-red streak. It is brittle; the Vickers hardness (VHN25) is 87 kg mm-2 (range: 69—101) (Mohs hardness ∼3—3½). In reflected light, dalnegroite is highly bireflectant and weakly pleochroic, from white to a slightly greenish-grey. In cross-polarized light, it is highly anisotropic with bluish to green rotation tints and red internal reflections.

According to chemical and X-ray diffraction data, dalnegroite appears to be isotypic with chabournéite, Tl5-xPb2x(Sb,As)21-xS34. It is triclinic, probable space group P1, with a = 16.217(7) Å, b = 42.544(9) Å, c = 8.557(4) Å, α = 95.72(4)°, β = 90.25(4)°, γ = 96.78(4)°, V = 5832(4) Å3, Z = 4.

The nine strongest powder-diffraction lines [d(Å) (I/I0) (hkl)] are: 3.927 (100) ( 10 0); 3.775 (45) (22); 3.685 (45) (60); 3.620 (50) (440); 3.124 (50) (2); 2.929 (60) (42); 2.850 (70) (42); 2.579 (45) (0 2); 2.097 (60) (024). The mean of 11 electron microprobe analyses gave elemental concentrations as follows: Pb 10.09(1) wt.%, Tl 20.36(1), Sb 23.95(1), As 21.33(8), S 26.16(8), totalling 101.95 wt.%, corresponding to Tl4.15Pb2.03(As11.86Sb8.20)S34. The new mineral is named for Alberto Dal Negro, Professor in Mineralogy and Crystallography at the University of Padova since 1976.

Pitticite is re-examined analytically and found to be a gel-like mineral of widely varying composition. Previously reported minor amounts of accessory elements are indeed present in pitticite. The name pitticite has validity only as a generic name for gel-like ferric iron arsenate minerals of varying composition.

Yukonite is reported from the Sterling Hill mine, Ogdensburg, New Jersey, the second occurrence. New data for yukonite suggest the name should be retained.

The Limousin ophiolite (French Massif Central) occurs as elongate bodies forming a (nearly) continuous suture zone between two major lithotectonic units of the French Variscan belt. The mantle section of the ophiolite is made of diopside-bearing harzburgite, harzburgite and dunite characteristic of a lherzolite-harzburgite ophiolite type (LHOT). The plutonic section is essentially composed of troctolites, wehrlites and gabbros locally intruded by ilmenite-rich mafic dykes. All the rocks were strongly affected by an ocean-floor hydrothermal metamorphism. The composition and evolution of primary magmatic phases (olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase and spinel) throughout the lowermost magmatic sequence correspond to those described in oceanic cumulates (ODP data). The Limousin ophiolite is thus of MOR type instead of SSZ type. The whole lithological section, the mineral chemistry, the extensive hydrothermal oceanic alteration and the relatively thin crustal section are typical of a slow-spreading ridge ocean (i.e. Mid-Atlantic ridge). Comparison of the Limousin ophiolite with other ophiolites from European Variscides suggests that the oceanic domain was actively spreading during the Late Palaeozoic and extended from the Armorican massif to the Polish Sudetes.

The mineralogy, including the accessory phases låvenite, rosenbuschite, and catapleiite, and consequent petrogenetic implications have been investigated for a group of four overlapping nepheline syenite complexes (Chikala, Chaone, Mongolowe, and Chinduzi) and for spatially associated silica-saturated and over-saturated perthosites, from the northern part of the Chilwa Alkaline Province, Malawi.

The complexes are thought to have formed by injection into high-level chambers of magma pulses genetically related to a common source magma at depth. Evidence for the source magma is preserved in salitic cores observed in the pyroxenes and a trend to more hedenbergite-rich compositions is believed to have formed by evolution of this magma. Subsequent trends of acmite enrichment followed magma injection into the higher-level chambers; the actual pyroxene trend associated with each individual complex is a function of the evolution attained by the source magma, oxidation potential, and perhaps even alkali activity. On the basis of such a two-stage model, the pyroxene data suggest emplacement of the Chaone and Mongolowe magmas somewhat earlier than that of Chikala, with the Chinduzi magma migrating even later.

Amphiboles and biotites are believed to have formed after high-level injection of the magmas. Their compositions broadly reflect the nature of the crystallizing pyroxenes in that magnesian hastingsitic hornblendes and more Mg-rich biotites are associated with more Mg-rich sodic pyroxenes, whereas katophorites and annite-rich micas are generally associated with sodic pyroxenes somewhat richer in hedenbergite. Sub-solidus crystallization in some of the complexes is represented by aegirine and magnesio-arfvedsonite. Nepheline compositions indicate broadly similar crystallization temperatures within the complexes, namely 950 to 750°C. Oxygen fugacities for these magmas obtained from biotite/annite compositions vary from 10−19 to 10−14 bars for this temperature range. Mineralogical data, particularly from pyroxenes and amphiboles, strongly suggest that the perthosites, spatially associated with the nepheline syenite complexes, are genetically unrelated.

K-feldspar variation is described for four salic plutonic igneous complexes that show normative mineral variation in keeping with the course of fractionation predicted from experimental studies. These are a sodic syenite (Loch Ailsh), potassic syenites (Loch Loyal), a peralkaline syenite and soda granite complex (Puklen), and a calc-alkaline pluton (Foyers). Additional data are given for examples from the literature. Microcline becomes more abundant relative to orthoclase as members of these intrusive sequences approach thermal minima on the liquidus in the system Ab-Or-An-Qz. This relation exists irrespective of the compositional range of the rock suites, the bulk composition of the alkali feldspars, grain size, or field relations. Early orthoclase-bearing rocks retain orthoclase when enclosed as xenoliths in microcline-bearing rocks, or when cut by minor bodies of microcline-bearing rocks. The K-feldspar variation may reflect increasing water content or the peralkaline or peraluminous character of the fractionating magmas. These factors affect the feldspar structure at the time of initial crystal growth and dictate whether microcline will develop on cooling.
