The Tinderet volcano (19.9 to 5.5 Ma), located within the Kavirondo rift in Kenya, contains blocks of carbonatite lavas with calcite, minor apatite, fluorite, spinel-group minerals, accessory perovskite and 'plumbopyrochlore'; nyerereite is present as inclusions in the perovskite. At least four types of calcite are present in the carbonatite lavas; they differ in morphology, composition and origin. The dominant variety is secondary type-II calcite, which is enriched in sodium (up to 1.1 wt.% Na2O) and strontium (up to 1.3 wt.% SrO). The spinel-group minerals are manganese-bearing and include Mn-rich magnetite, magnesioferrite and jacobsite. Oxygen isotope data for bulk carbonatite samples (δ18O = +16.2 % to +22.6 % VSMOW) support a low crystallization temperature for the secondary calcite. Petrographic, mineralogical and isotopic data indicate that the Tinderet carbonatites are similar to natrocarbonatites from the Oldoinyo Lengai and Kerimasi volcanoes that have altered and recrystallized to form calcite carbonatites. These data support the hypothesis that some of the Tinderet carbonatites were originally alkali-rich rocks which contained primary nyerereite.

A comparison of shield geotherms with the experimentally determined vapour-present solidus for kimberlite, indicates conditions of grazing incidence between 150–200 km, precisely where the mineral geotherms become disturbed. This relationship permits a new interpretation of kimberlite activity, by which volatiles migrating through cratonic lithosphere cause first metasomatism, and then incipient melting in the zone of incidence. Production of localized pockets of near-solidus liquid, erupted by accelerating crack propagation through the overlying lithosphere, is consistent with the unique set of features that characterize kimberlite. Volatile fluxing along steeper geotherms (away from craton nucleii) produces entirely different modes of magma eruption and development, by which highly under-saturated alkalic melts can reach the surface as liquids. Kimberlite activity is thus revealed as the limiting case of cratonic magmatism.

Precious and base metal selenide minerals have been identified in gold-bearing carbonate veins cutting Middle Devonian limestones of the Torquay Limestone Group at Hope's Nose, Torquay. The selenide assemblage consists of clausthalite (PbSe), tiemannite (HgSe), klockmannite (CuSe), umangite (Cu3Se2), tyrrellite (Cu,Co,Ni)3Se4, trustedtite (Ni3Se4), penroseite (NiSe2), naumannite (Ag2Se), eucairite (AgCuSe) and fischesserite (Ag3AuSe2), only clausthalite having previously been reported from Britain. They are associated with palladian gold, gold, hematite, and accessory pyrite and chalcopyrite in a gangue consisting predominantly of calcite; alteration products include cerussite, malachite, aragonite and goethite.

The relative abundance of Au, Ag, Hg and Se is a characteristic feature in the uppermost parts of some precious metal ‘epithermal’ systems. The occurrence at Hope's Nose is related to both structural and lithological factors: a deep-seated NW-SE structural lineament, the Lundy-Sticklepath-Lustleigh-Torquay fault; local thrusting, and to an association of basic-intermediate igneous rocks with a sedimentary sequence including carbonaceous shales and limestones. The mineralization is considered to be post-Variscan, probably Permo-Triassic in age.

Enclaves of diverse origin are present in minor amounts in the coarse-grained biotite granites of the Cornubian batholith, southwest England. The most common enclave type is layered, rich in biotite, cordierite and aluminosilicates, and has textures and compositions that reveal variable degrees of melt extraction from metasedimentary source rocks. Rare sillimanite-bearing enclaves represent residual material, either from the region of magma generation or its ascent path, but most such enclaves were probably derived from the contact aureole closer to the present level of exposure. These non-igneous enclaves (NIE) and their disaggregation products are present in all major plutons, comprising from < 2 to 5 vol.% of the granites. Enclaves of igneous origin are also present in all major plutons except Carnmenellis, generally comprising < 1 vol.% of the granites. The most common type is intermediate in composition, with microgranular texture, and mineral compositions and textures consistent with an origin by magma mixing. Large crystals of K-feldspar, plagioclase and quartz, common in these microgranular enclaves (ME) but absent in NIE, represent phenocrysts derived from the silicic end-member during magma mixing events rather than products of metasomatism as suggested previously. Although the composition of the mafic end-member (basaltic or lamprophyric) involved in the mixing process is poorly constrained, the presence of ME in the granites, and the preponderance of mantle-derived mafic rocks in the coeval Exeter Volcanics, indicate that mafic magma injection into the crust was a factor in the generation of the batholith. Advection of sub-crustal heat provides an explanation for large-volume crustal melting in regions of relatively thin crust such as southwest England.

The gels prepared by adding ammonium hydroxide rapidly to ferric chloride solutions to various pH values are shown to consist of amorphous material and crystalline goethite ; no other iron oxide was definitely identified in the present experiments, although this does not preclude other oxides being present in gels prepared under slightly different conditions. The goethite grows as acieular crystals on ageing at all pH values, but the rate of growth is greater at higher pit values. The exothermic peaks appearing on differential thermograms of such gels are apparently due to coalescence of extremely minute hematite particles to give larger particles, the sharpness of the peak indicating to some extent the size of the original hematite particles. These observations are related to data for other iron oxides, and the morphology of ferric oxide polymorphs under the electron microscope is considered.

Talc-kyanite-quartz schists, Mg-chlorite-kyanite-quartz schists, kyanite gedritites, and kyanite-bronzite gedritites occur in the Central Province of Zambia. Experimental work in the system MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O suggests that these assemblages formed at pressures in excess of 10 kb.

Complete lattice parameters have been determined at a series of temperatures up to 950 °C using a furnace on a powder diffractometer for six synthetic supposed equilibrium albites, a nonequilibrium albite, two natural albites, and a heat-treated natural albite. The supposed equilibrium albites were prepared hydrothermally by MacKenzie (1957) for long periods of time and reached or nearly reached a state of no further change at their temperatures of synthesis between 500 and 1000 °C. A crystal of natural albite and three crystals of heat-treated natural albite were studied by high-temperature, single-crystal methods on a Buerger precession camera up to 1000 °C for comparison.

The lattice angles for each albite decrease smoothly with increasing temperature; the a-axis and the volume increase smoothly with increasing temperature. The rates of change increase with increasing temperature. The c and in some cases the b-axes appear to decrease initially in the range 25–300 °C and then subsequently increase. The thermal dilatation is highly anisotropic—the change in a is about twice that in b and about six times that in c over the whole range 25–850 °C. The effect of a temperature rise on the lattice parameters of the albites is very similar to the effect of the substitution of potassium on the room-temperature parameters.

Plots of α* against γ* for each albite at a sequence of temperatures up to 950 °C fall on nearly straight parallel lines, all albites becoming less oblique (triclinic) with increasing temperature. Of the equilibrium albites, only the one synthesized at 1000°C becomes monoclinic below the melting point. The ratio d010/d001 or c*/b* is a measure of order in the albites and does not vary with temperature. The similar behaviours of this ratio and of other lattice parameters as a function of the temperature of synthesis confirms the two-step ordering process in albite.

Four distinct textures and related compositions of kosmochlor (Ko) and chromian jadeite in rocks from the Myanmar jadeitite area are described: (1) spheroidal or ellipsoidal aggregates with a corona texture surrounding relict chromite; (2) spheroidal or ellipsoidal aggregates with a core of jadeite; (3) granoblastic textures in undeformed coarse-grained clinopyroxene rocks; and (4) recrystallized fine-grained aggregates in deformed jadeitite. Nearly pure kosmochlor (97 mol.% NaCrSi2O6) was found in type 2 textures, closest to the end-member reported so far from a terrestrial rock. Sharp compositional boundaries between kosmochlor and chromian jadeite of variable composition are interpreted to be related to progressive crystallization or replacement at differing conditions. The compositions analysed plot along the kosmochlor-jadeite join. In contrast to conclusions of previous studies on the Myanmar clinopyroxenes there is no unequivocal evidence for miscibility gaps. The preservation of relict chromite in the centre of coronitic spheroidal or ellipsoidal aggregates of kosmochlor and jadeite indicates a metasomatic origin from a peridotite protolith at an inferred minimum pressure of 1.0 GPa and temperatures of 250—370°C. Recrystallization during later ductile deformation of the clinopyroxene rocks in the dislocation creep regime leads to fine-grained aggregates of chromian jadeite, which are of particular gemmological interest.

Spherulitic devitrification is a post-eruptive process affecting many rhyolitic lavas of the Taupo region. The spherulites consist of cryptocrystalline intergrowths of α-cristobalite and alkali feldspar (calcic anorthoclase), with minute granules of magnetite, hematite, and secondary (?)goethite. The effects of chemical fractionation occurring during progressive spherulite growth has been studied from a suite of samples from the Aratiatia rhyolite. The most significant effect is the progressive enrichment of both bulk spherulite compositions and the coexisting residual glass in potash with increasing spherulite development. This effect is due both to the very low potash in the earliest formed spherulites and to the consistently higher Na/K ratios of the spherulites relative to the total rock compositions. These differences progressively decrease with increasing spherulite crystallization. The bulk rock compositions, however, evidently remain essentially constant. The degree of potash enrichment in the residual glasses during advanced stages of devitrification is greater than expected by reference to the ternary feldspar and quartz-feldspar systems. This post-eruptive alkali fractionation during spherulite formation is superimposed on the pre-eruptive phenocryst-liquid fractionation.

Mineral data from Glen Clova, Angus, suggest that the development of kyanite in graphite-bearing staurolite mica-schists, treated in terms of a Ca-free system, involved decrease of staurolite and a decrease in biotite MgO:FeO ratio. A kyanite isograd may be defined in Glen Clova as the locality where kyanite joins the assemblage staurolite-garnet-biotite-muscovite-plagioclase-quartz-graphite, the biotite having mol. , although the persistence of this identical assemblage over some 600 metres introduces some uncertainty of interpretation. It is suggested that the reaction staurolite+quartz → garnet+kyanite is unlikely to be a common reaction in nature and that its use to subdivide the amphibolite facies is unjustified.

In 1938–39 the D'Arcy Exploration Company, Limited, sank a borehole (Eskdale well no. 2) to a depth of 5040 feet near Aislaby, Eskdale, Yorkshire, to test the oil or gas possibilities in the Permian Magnesian Limestone. As the well was some distance from any previous boring through the Permian salt series, the Company undertook to carry out continuous coring through this series in the public interest. The boring passed through Lias, Rhaetic, and Trias, and finished in the Permian Lower Magnesian Limestone. The geological results of this boring have been discussed by Lees and Taitt (1945), and fig. 1 has been reproduced from their paper. It can be seen that three evaporite beds were passed through; two in the Upper Permian salt zone, and one in the Middle Permian.

The Carnmenellis pluton is a post-orogenic granite of Hercynian age, comprised largely of porphyritic biotite granites which possess LREE enriched patterns with slight negative Eu anomalies. Electron microprobe and ICP spectrometry data are presented for monazite, which occurs as an accessory mineral in all granite types, and it is demonstrated that this mineral is the principal host for LREE in the biotite granites. HREE are strongly partitioned into the accessory minerals xenotime, apatite, and zircon; only Eu substitutes significantly into the essential minerals. The behaviour of the REE during granite differentiation is controlled by the behaviour of the radioactive accessory minerals, which limits the usefulness of these elements in the petrogenetic modelling of granitic rocks.

Geochemical characteristics and rare-earth element (REE)-bearing minerals of calc-alkaline granites in southern Myanmar were investigated to identify the minerals controlling fractionation between light and heavy REE (LREE and HREE) during magmatic differentiation and weathering. The granites were classified on the basis of the mineral assemblages into two contrasting groups: allanite-(Ce)- and/or titanite-bearing granites; and more HREE-enriched granites characterized by hydrothermal minerals including synchysite(Y), parisite-(Ce), bastnäsite-(Ce), xenotime-(Y), monazite-(Ce), Y-Ca silicate, waimirite-(Y) and fluorite. This suggests that allanite-(Ce) and titanite are not stable in differentiated magma and HREE are eventually preferentially incorporated into the hydrothermal minerals. The occurrence of the REE-bearing minerals is constrained by the degree of magmatic differentiation and the boundary of two contrasting granite groups is indicated by SiO2 contents of ∼74 wt.% or Rb/Sr ratios of ∼3–8. Fractionation between LREE and HREE during weathering of the granites is influenced by weathering resistance of the REE-bearing minerals, i.e. allanite-(Ce), titanite, the REE fluorocarbonates and waimirite-(Y) are probably more susceptible to weathering, whereas zircon, monazite-(Ce) and xenotime-(Y) are resistant to weathering. Ion-exchangeable REE in weathered granites tend to be depleted in HREE relative to the whole-rock compositions, suggesting that HREE are more strongly adsorbed on weathering products or that HREE remain in residual minerals.

The structure of chrysotile, an important asbestos mineral, consists of layers curled concentrically or spirally into tubes. Published transmission electron microscope (TEM) images suggest that successive layers are generally stacked out of register with one another. However, a lattice model can be constructed in such a way that each layer can be stacked in register with the next, five times around the circumference, so that the structure exhibits a global 5-fold symmetry. We report here TEM observations confirming that chrysotile asbestos can form crystals with this structure, the first observation of five-fold symmetry in a natural crystalline material.

Low-temperature metamorphism of the Franciscan complex at Pacheco Pass occurs at P-T conditions near the so-called jadeite isograd. Along Highway 152 in the Diablo Range, from west to east, four distinct prograde metamorphic zones are defined: (I) albite-quartz zone, (II) albite-rich, albite-quartz-clinopyroxene assemblage, (III) clinopyroxene-rich, albite-quartz-clinopyroxene assemblage, and (IV) clinopyroxene zone. Metamorphic pyroxenes are restricted to zones II, III, and IV in metagreywackes, but metabasites contain augite-rich pyroxenes even in zone I. With increasing grade, the compositions of pyroxene in metagreywackes change in XJd from nearly 100 in zone II to about 60 in zone III. The diopside component has little effect on the XJd of pyroxene. The apparent change of XJd reflects differences in pressure and temperature rather than in bulk rock composition. In metagreywackes, at the onset of zone II, albite breaks down to form Jd100 according to the reaction Ab = Jd+Qz. With increasing grade, this reaction leads to less jadeitic pyroxene. From zones II to III, a continuous reaction is delineated: Qz+2 pyroxenes (Jd80Ac15Aug5)=pyroxene (Jd60Ac30Aug10) + Ab.

The metamorphic temperatures are estimated to be about 170°C in zones I and II, and about 230°C in zones II and III. The temperature variation recorded in a single rock is probably less than 30°C The pressure estimate depends on the choice of experimental data for the jadeite-albite-quartz curve; it ranges from 4.5 to 8 kbar. A gently folded thermal structure of the Cretaceous subduction zone metamorphism is postulated for this area.

Electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and microscopic investigations were performed on monazite grains from the black sand deposits of northern Sinai beach. Electron microprobe backscattered electron images, X-ray mapping and wavelength dispersive spectroscopy line scans showed some grains with sector zoning and others with thorite inclusions. Based on the EMPA data, the studied monazite is grouped into monazite-(Ce) and Th-rich monazite. Monazite-(Ce) is enriched in REE and P, whereas Th-rich monazite is enriched in Th, U, Ca, Y, Si and Fe. The compositional variations of monazite are governed by the substitution of REE by Th, U, Ca and Y. The monazite grains show enriched chondrite-normalized REE patterns represented mainly by LREE and only Gd from the HREE. These patterns demonstrate negative Nd and Euanomalies. The floods associated with the pluvial periods which prevailed in Egypt during the Pleistocene, were able to erode the source rocks and liberate heavy minerals including monazite. The mineral grains were transported through several wadis and tributaries to the main channel of the River Nile. At the confluence sites, these heavy minerals were mixed with Ethiopian and central African heavy mineral assemblages. The grains continued to move together downriver until being deposited in their current locations. The analytical results suggest that pegmatites and granites of the Eastern Desert are the most likely source of the monazite. However, due to the large area of the Nile watershed, other undiscovered sources are possible.

A detailed electron probe study of irontitanium oxide intergrowths from slowly cooled granitic rocks from the granulite grade, Archaean Scourian complex of north-west Scotland has yielded a wealth of information about magmatic and metamorphic temperatures, subsolidus cooling, and the behaviour of the fluid phase during cooling. Five stages are documented in the cooling history of granites and trondhjemites which include: (i) magmatic-subsolidus cooling (1035 °C–890 °C); (ii) granulite facies metamorphism and the accompanied expulsion of a hydrous fluid phase (890 °C–830 °C); (iii) subsolidus cooling following the peak of the granulite facies metamorphism (830 °C–660 °C); (iv) the localized reintroduction of water into the rocks during retrogression (660 °C–530 °C) and (v) subsolidus cooling and re-equilibration in the presence of a finite amount of H2O (530 °C–320 °C).

Pyrochlore has been considered as a waste form to immobilize high-level nuclear waste such as excess weapons-grade plutonium. In order to study the aqueous stability of pyrochlore, we have carried out hydrothermal experiments with a natural microlite (Nb + Ta > 2Ti; Ta ⩾ Nb) at 175°C in a neutral and acidic solution for 14 days. The starting material and the experimental products were studied by electron microprobe, backscattered electron (BSE) imaging, powder infrared (IR) and micro-Raman spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffractrometry (XRD). The microlite has small U (∼200 ppm) and Th (∼800 ppm) contents and is crystalline. The hydrothermal treatment in a solution containing l mol/l HCl and l mol/l CaCl2 causes the partial replacement of the microlite (up to ∼10 μm) by a new pyrochlore phase. This new phase is characterized by a larger unit-cell volume and contains a large number of vacancies at the A site (A = Ca, Na) as well as anion vacancies, molecular water, and possibly OH groups. Analyses of the experimental fluid further revealed that U was also selectively lost to the solution. Treatment in pure water did not produce reaction zones detectable by BSE imaging or powder XRD. However, significant spectral changes in powder IR spectra of the reaction product and the detection of Na and Ca in the solution indicate that the microlite has also reacted in pure water. The experimental alteration features bear a remarkable resemblance to those seen in naturally altered microlite samples, suggesting that short-term experimental results can be applied to natural systems and vice versa in order to evaluate the long-term stability of a pyrochlore waste form.

We examined grains of the platinum-group mineral, laurite (RuS2), from the type locality, Pontyn River, Tanah Laut, Borneo, and from the Tambanio River, southeast Borneo. The grains show a variety of morphologies, including euhedral grains with conchoidal fractures and pits, and spherical grains with no crystal faces, probably because of abrasion. Inclusions are rare, but one grain contains Ca-Al amphibole inclusions, and another contains an inclusion of chalcopyrite+bornite+pentlandite+heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) that is considered to have formed by a two-stage process of exsolution and crystallization from a once homogeneous Fe-Cu-Ni sulphide melt.

All grains examined are solid solutions of Ru and Os with Ir (2.71 –11.76 wt.%) and Pd (0.31–0.66 wt.%). Their compositions are similar to laurite from ophiolitic rocks. The compositions show broad negative correlations between Os and Ir, between As and Ir, and between As (0.4 –0.74 wt.%) and Se (140 to 240 ppm). Laurite with higher Os contains more Se and less Ir and As. The negative correlations between Se and As may be attributed to their occupancy of the S site, but the compositional variations of Os, Ir and As probably reflect the compositional variation of rocks where the crystals grew.

Ratios of S/Se in laurite show a narrow spread from 1380 to 2300, which are similar to ratios for sulphides from the refractory sub-arc mantle. Sulphur isotopic compositions of laurite are independent of chemical compositions and morphologies and are similar to the chondritic value of 0%. The data suggest that S in laurite has not undergone redox changes and originated from the refractory mantle. The data support the formation of laurite in the residual mantle or in a magma generated from such a refractory mantle, followed by erosion after the obduction of the host ultramafic rocks.
