Emerald green chromian 2M1 mica occurs in metamorphosed and metasomatized limestones, related to serpentinic rocks from Sierra Nevada, Spain. Chemical analysis gave: SiO2 44.51, Al2O3 27.60, TiO2 0.17, Cr2O3 3.35, Fe2O3 1.76, FeO 0.07, MnO 0.00, MgO 8.59, Li2O 0.03, Rb2O 0.01, BaO 0.01, CaO 1.71, Na2O 0.40, K2O 7.86, H2O 4.21 = 100.28. Optic properties are: pleochroism X blue, Y green, Z bluish green; refractive indices: α=1.562, β=1.611, γ=1.616 (yellow light); inclined dispersion, r > v. Orientation: second order mica. Refined parameters are a = 5.2116(6), b = 9.045(2), c = 19.97(2)Å, β = 95.7(3)°. The structure is discussed and an order in the octahedral M(1) sites is observed, but no ordering in the tetrahedral T(1) and T(2) cations is detected. The mica described is a mariposite with anoma-lously high contents of Ca and Mg.

Stalagmites and stalactites, as observed within natural caves, may develop inside geological repositories during constructional and post-operational periods. It is therefore important to understand actinide sorption within such materials. Towards this, experimental studies were carried out with 233U, 238Np (VI), 238Np (IV), 239Pu and 241Am radiotracers using natural speleothem samples collected from the Dharamjali cave of the Kumaon Lesser Himalayas, India. Petrological/mineralogical studies showed that natural speleothems have three general domains: (1) columnar calcite; (2) microcrystalline calcite; and (3) botryoidal aragonite – each with ferruginous materials. Results showed that all domains of speleothems can take up >99% actinides, irrespective of valence state and pH (1–6 range) of the solution. However, distribution coefficients were found to be at a maximum in aragonite for most of the actinides. Such data are very important for long-term performance and safety assessments of the deep geological repositories planned for the disposal of high-level nuclear wastes.

An occurrence of magnesian collinsite has been found with other rare phosphates in a variscite deposit in semi-desert 15 km NW. of Milgun Station homestead (25° 6′ S., 118° 18′ E.), Western Australia. The collinsite occurs as tapering white 3-mm prisms, mammillated aggregates, and thin veinlets in cavities in mudstone. The crystals have two good cleavages, D2.93, subvitreous lustre, H4–5, white streak and are brittle. Optical properties α 1·632, β 1·642, γ 1·657, 2Vγ , ≈ 80°. The mineral is triclinic with a 5·734, b 6·780, c 5·441 Å, α97·29° β 108·56°, γ 107·28°. X-ray powder data given, the lines are similar to P.D.F. card 14–314 but new cell gives better indexing. Chemical analysis by F. R. W. Lindsey gave FeO 0·07, MgO 11·3, CaO 35·2, Na2O 0·01, K2O 0·02, P2O5 41·2, H2O+10·7, H2O− 0·15, F0·02, SiO2 (quartz impurity) 1·31, Al, Mn, Zn, SO3 not detected, net sum 99·97, close to Ca2Mg(PO4)2.2H2O, after deduction of moisture and quartz impurity. Typical specimens are preserved at the Government Chemical Laboratories, Perth, Western Australia.

Caryinite from Låmgban, Sweden, and arseniopleite from both the Långban and Sjö Mines in Sweden, are re-examined chemically and crystallographically. Both species are monoclinic, with space group C2/c, and similar lattice parameters. The general formula for caryinite is Na4Ca4Ca4(Mn,Mg)8(AsO4)12, and that for arseniopleite is Na4Ca4Mn4(Mn,Mg)8(AsO4)12. The species status of arseniopleite remains uncertain; it may have Mn dominant in the M(1) site.

The new beudantite-group mineral oberwolfachite, ideally SrFe3+3(AsO4)(SO4)(OH)6, was discovered in two localities: Clara mine, Oberwolfach, Schwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany (holotype) and Monterniers mine, Lantignié, Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France (cotype). The associated minerals are quartz, baryte, hematite, illite, goethite, beudantite and dussertite (Clara) and arsenogoyazite, jarosite, graulichite-(Ce), goethite and hematite (Monterniers). Oberwolfachite forms yellow to brown platy crystals up to 1 mm across or thick outer zones of mixed (oberwolfachite–beudantite) crystals up to 3 mm across. The lustre is adamantine and the streak is yellow. A distinct cleavage on {0001} is observed. Calculated density is 3.874 g⋅cm–3. The infrared spectra are given. The chemical composition of the holotype/cotype samples are (wt.%, b.d.l. = below detection limit): K2O 1.25/1.86, SrO 6.41/11.15, BaO 8.13/0.45, PbO 2.18/b.d.l., Al2O3 0.16/0.23, Fe2O3 38.99/39.98, La2O3 1.68/not determined, Ce2O3 1.28/2.06, P2O5 0.12/b.d.l., As2O5 17.55/16.55, SO3 12.86/14.99, H2O (calculated) 8.72/9.05, total 99.33/96.62. The empirical formula of the holotype sample is (Sr0.38Ba0.33K0.16Pb0.06La0.06Ce0.05)Σ1.04(Fe3+3.03Al0.02)Σ3.05[(SO4)1.00(AsO4)0.95(PO4)0.01](O6.16H6.00). The crystal structures of both samples were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R = 3.13% (holotype, 293 K) and 2.65% (cotype, 170 K). Oberwolfachite is trigonal, R${\bar 3}$m, with a = 7.3270(3) Å, c = 17.0931(9) Å and V = 794.70(8) Å3 (holotype), and a = 7.298(2) Å, c = 16.908(3) Å and V = 779.8(4) Å3 (cotype); Z = 3. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern of holotype [d, Å (I, %)(hkl)] are: 5.95 (56)(101), 3.664 (37)(110), 3.117 (16)(021), 3.082 (100)(113), 2.548 (15)(024), 2.280 (22)(107), 1.983 (26)(303) and 1.832 (19)(220).

Melcherite (IMA2015-018), ideally Ba2Na2Mg[Nb6O19]·6H2O, occurs as a vug mineral in the carbonatite of the Jacupiranga mine, Cajati county, São Paulo state, Brazil, associated with dolomite, calcite, magnetite, pyrrhotite, tochilinite, ‘pyrochlore’ and fluorapatite. This is also the type locality for zirkelite, quintinite, menezesite and pauloabibite. The mineral forms irregular, tabular crystals up to 200 µm in maximum dimension. Melcherite is transparent and displays a vitreous lustre; it is beige with a white streak. It is non-fluorescent. The mineral displays perfect cleavage on {001}. Chemical composition varies from Ba2Na2Mg[Nb6O19].6H2O to (BaK)(NaCa)Mg[Nb6O19].6H2O. Empirical formulae for the first and the second compositions are: (Ba1.75K0.19)Σ1.94(Na1.80Ca0.19)Σ1.99(Mg0.96Mn0.02Al0.02)Σ1.00Nb6.02O19.00·6H2O and (Ba0.99K1.00)Σ1.99(Na1.02Ca0.96)Σ1.98(Mg0.95Mn0.05)Σ1.00Nb6.02O19.00·6H2O, respectively. Data for a single crystal with the second composition are: trigonal, R$\bar 3$, a = 9.0117(6) Å, c = 23.3986(16) Å, V = 1645.64(19) Å3 and Z = 3. Calculated density for this formula is 3.733 g/cm3, and the calculated mean refractive index is 1.924. Melcherite is a hexaniobate that has structural layers parallel to the xy plane that stack along the c axis with simultaneous 1/3 [110] displacement so as to produce an R lattice. The melcherite structure is built by layers of [(Ba,K)(O,H2O)9] polyhedra and the [Nb6O19]8− super-octahedron (Lindqvist anion) interconnected by [(Na,Ca)O6] polyhedra. Cations of Mg2+ are bonded to six water molecules each and are not associated with Lindqvist oxygen ions. The mineral is named in honour of Geraldo Conrado Melcher (1924–2011), a pioneer in Jacupiranga carbonatite studies.

Arsenohauchecornite, Ni9BiAsS8, and tellurohauchecornite, Ni9BiTeS8 from the Sudbury area, Ontario, are now recognized as distinct mineral species in the Hauchecornite Group and not as varieties as described previously. Descriptions of these two minerals are given, summarized from Gait and Harris (1972).

Reznitskyite, ideally CaMg(VO4)F, is a new mineral species of the tilasite group from the Arsenatnaya fumarole, Northern Breakthrough of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption, Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka, Russia. It occurs as zones (usually up to 0.05 mm thick) in crystals of V- and P-containing tilasite or as homogeneous grains up to 0.1 mm across. It was found in polymineralic sublimate encrustations in association with minerals of the svabite–fluorapatite–pliniusite system and the schäferite–berzeliite, tilasite–isokite, wagnerite–arsenowagnerite and udinaite–arsenudinaite series. The mineral assemblage also includes calciojohillerite, diopside, forsterite, titanite, rhabdoborite-(V), rhabdoborite-(W), rhabdoborite-(Mo), ludwigite, powellite, scheelite, hematite, baryte and magnesioferrite. Reznitskyite is transparent or semi-transparent, colourless, with vitreous lustre. Dcalc. = 3.453 g cm–3. Under the microscope, in reflected light reznitskyite is grey, non-pleochroic, with very weak bireflectance (ΔR589 nm = 0.5%) and distinct anisotropy. Reznitskyite is the first vanadate with a titanite-type structure. It is monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 6.6912(7), b = 8.9395(7), c = 7.0587(8) Å, β = 113.078(13)°, V = 388.43(8) Å3 and Z = 4. The strongest reflections of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d in Å(I)(hkl)]: 3.082(100)(200), 3.250(66)($\bar{1}$12, 002), 2.631(44)(022), 2.854(34)($\bar{2}$02), 2.683(33)(130), 3.686(26)(021), 2.531(25)(220), 1.749(25)($\bar{3}$32, $\bar{2}$04) and 2.344(24)(131). Electron microprobe analysis gave (wt.%) MgO 20.44, CaO 26.83, P2O5 6.24, V2O5 21.09, As2O5 18.97, SO3 0.47, F 9.42, –O=F –3.97, with a total of 99.49. The empirical formula of reznitskyite, calculated on the basis of O+F = 5 atoms per formula unit, is: Ca0.97Mg1.03(V0.47As0.33P0.18S0.01)Σ0.99O3.99F1.01. Reznitskyite is a vanadate analogue of tilasite CaMg(AsO4)F and isokite CaMg(PO4)F. The mineral is named in honour of the outstanding Russian mineralogist Leonid Zinovievich Reznitsky (born 1938) who has made significant contribution to the mineralogy of vanadium.

Princivalleite, Na(Mn2Al)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O, is a new mineral (IMA2020-056) of the tourmaline supergroup. It occurs in the Veddasca Valley, Luino area, Varese, Lombardy, Italy (46°03’30.74’’N, 8°48’24.47’’E) at the centre of a narrow (2–3 cm wide) vertical pegmatitic vein, a few metres long, crosscutting a lens of flaser gneiss. Crystals are subhedral (up to 10 mm in size), azure with a vitreous lustre, conchoidal fracture and white streak. Princivalleite has a Mohs hardness of ~7, a calculated density of 3.168 g/cm3 and is uniaxial (–). Princivalleite has trigonal symmetry, space group R3m, a = 15.9155(2) Å, c = 7.11660(10) Å, V = 1561.15(4) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 1.36% using 1758 unique reflections collected with MoKα X-ray intensity data. Crystal-chemical analysis resulted in the empirical crystal-chemical formula

Princivalleite is an oxy-species belonging to the alkali group of the tourmaline supergroup. The closest end-member compositions of valid tourmaline species are those of oxy-schorl and darrellhenryite, to which princivalleite is related by the substitutions Mn2+ ↔ Fe2+ and Mn2+ ↔ 0.5Al3+ + 0.5Li+, respectively. Princivalleite from Veddasca Valley is a geochemical anomaly, originated in a B-rich and peraluminous anatectic pegmatitic melt formed in situ, poor in Fe and characterised by reducing conditions in the late-stage metamorphic fluids derived by the flaser gneiss. The Mn-enrichment in this new tourmaline is due to absence of other minerals competing for Mn such as garnet.

The ~492 Ma Shetland Ophiolite Complex contains an extensive mantle section, within which numerous podiform chromitite bodies formed during melt percolation in a supra-subduction zone setting. One of the Shetland ophiolite chromitite localities has an unusual style of platinum-group element (PGE) mineralization. Specifically, the Cliff chromitite suite has relatively high (>250 ppm) Pt plus Pd, compared to other chromitites in the Shetland Ophiolite Complex. In this study, we apply petrographic observation, mineral chemistry and novel X-ray microtomography data to elucidate the petrogenesis of PGE-bearing phases at Cliff. The combined datasets reveal that the PGE at Cliff have probably been fractionated by an As-rich fluid, concentrating Pt and Ir into visible (0.1–1 µm) platinum-group minerals (PGM) such as sperrylite and irarsite, respectively. The high (>1 ppm) bulk-rock concentrations of the other PGE (e.g. Os) in the Cliff chromitites suggests the presence of abundant fine-grained unidentified PGM in the serpentinized groundmass. The spatial association of arsenide phases and PGM with alteration rims on Cr-spinel grains suggests that the high Pt and Pd abundances at Cliff result from a late-stage low-temperature (e.g. 200–300°C) hydrothermal event. This conclusion highlights the potential effects that secondary alteration processes can have on modifying and upgrading the tenor of PGE deposits.

Wodegongjieite occurs in the Cr-11 chromitite orebody of the Luobusa ophiolite in the Kangjinla district, Tibet, China. It is found in two inclusions in corundum: (1) as a partial overgrowth (holotype) up to 1.5 μm thick around a spheroid 20 μm across of wenjiite (Ti10(Si,P,□)7), kangjinlaite (Ti11(Si,P)10), zhiqinite (TiSi2) and badengzhuite (TiP), and (2) as pools up to 0.25 μm wide filling interstices between wenjiite, jingsuiite (TiB2), osbornite–khamrabaevite (Ti[N,C]) and corundum. Energy dispersive analyses gave Al2O3 34.09, SiO2 49.11, K2O 2.56, CaO 11.71, SrO 2.53, total 100.0 wt.%, corresponding to K0.58Sr0.26Ca2.25Al7.20Si8.80O31.20, ideally KCa3(Al7Si9)O32, for Si + Al = 16 cations.

Single-crystal studies were carried out with three-dimensional electron diffraction providing data for an ab initio structure solution in the hexagonal space group P6/mcc (#192) with a = 10.2(2) Å, c = 14.9(3) Å, V = 1340(50) Å3 and Z = 2. Density (calc.) = 2.694 g⋅cm–3. The refinement, which assumes complete Si–Al disorder, gives average T1–O and T2–O bond lengths both as 1.65 Å. It was not practical to use unconstrained refinement for the occupancies of the large cation sites 6f and 2a. The ab initio model shows clearly that the two cation sites have different sizes and coordination. Consequently, we imposed the condition (1) that all the K occupies the 2a site as the average K–O bond length of 3.07 Å is close to the average K–O bond lengths reported in kokchetavite and (2) that all the Ca occupies the 6f site as the average Ca–O bond length of 2.60 Å (2.36 Å and 2.84 Å for Ca–O1 and Ca–O3, respectively) is reasonable for Ca–O. Assuming that all K and all Ca are located at the 2a site and 6f site, respectively, Sr occupancies of these sites could be refined. Thermal parameters are positive and in a reasonable range. The structure is a sheet silicate isostructural with the K-feldspar polymorph kokchetavite, with two crystallographically distinct sites for K, but not with the topologically identical anorthite polymorph dmisteinbergite (CaAl2Si2O8) with only a single site for Ca. Substitution of K by Ca at the 6f site is associated with marked rotation of the Si,Al tetrahedra and a collapse of the structure to accommodate the smaller Ca ion.

The spheroid of intermetallic phases is believed to have formed from the interaction of mantle-derived CH4 + H2 fluids with basaltic magmas at depths of ~30–100 km, resulting in precipitation of corundum that entrapped intermetallic melts. Associated immiscible silicate melt of granodioritic composition crystallised metastably to wodegongjieite instead of a mixture of anorthite and K-feldspar.

A new occurrence of kintoreite, ideally PbFe3(PO4)(PO3OH)(OH)6, is described from the Tripi mine, Alì, Peloritani Mountains, northeastern Sicily, Italy. Kintoreite occurs as yellow equant crystals, up to 0.05 mm in size, on quartz, associated with another alunite-supergroup mineral currently under study. The studied grains of kintoreite are chemically zoned, showing the occurrence of two distinct domains. Electron microprobe analyses gave (in wt.%): SO3 5.47(27), P2O5 17.55(14), Al2O3 7.81(35), Fe2O3 23.81(44), PbO 35.11(41), H2Ocalc 9.93, total 99.68 (darker domains) and SO3 6.03(5), P2O5 16.66(23), Al2O3 4.22(2), Fe2O3 27.31(6), PbO 33.78(22), H2Ocalc 10.25, total 98.25 (brighter domains). On the basis of 14 O atoms per formula unit (apfu) and (P+S) = 2 apfu, the darker and brighter domains have chemical formula Pb1.00(Fe3+1.89Al0.97)Σ2.86[P1.57S0.43O7.43(OH)0.57][(OH)5.58(H2O)0.42]Σ6.00 and Pb0.98(Fe3+2.21Al0.53)Σ2.74[P1.51S0.49O7.49(OH)0.51][(OH)5.18(H2O)0.82]Σ6.00, respectively. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was performed on a grain extracted from the same sample. Unit-cell parameters are a = 7.2191(10), c = 16.834(3) Å, V = 759.8(3) Å3 and Z = 3; space group R$\bar{3}$m. The crystal structure was refined on the basis of 226 unique reflections with Fo > 4σ(Fo) and 31 least-square parameters to R1 = 0.0415. Kintoreite is isotypic with other alunite-supergroup minerals. Micro-Raman spectroscopy suggests the possible occurrence of H2O groups, supporting the possible protonation of (OH) groups as a charge-balance mechanism in this mineral. Kintoreite may play an environmental role in the Alì area, where previous authors detected high concentrations of potentially toxic elements in soils.

Fluorbritholite-(Nd), ideally Ca2Nd3(SiO4)3F, has been approved by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA2023–001) and constitutes a new member of the britholite group of the apatite supergroup. It occurs in skarn from the Malmkärra iron mine, Norberg, Västmanland (one of the Bastnäs-type deposits in Sweden), associated with calcite, dolomite, magnetite, lizardite, talc, fluorite, baryte, scheelite, gadolinite-(Nd) and other REE minerals. Fluorbritholite-(Nd) forms anhedral and small grains, rarely up to 250 μm across. They are brownish pink and transparent with a vitreous to greasy lustre. The mineral is brittle, with an uneven or subconchoidal fracture and lacks a cleavage. In thin section, the mineral is nonpleochroic, uniaxial (–). Dcalc = 4.92(1) g⋅cm−3 and ncalc = 1.795. The empirical chemical formula from electron microprobe (WDS) point analyses is (Ca1.62Nd0.97Ce0.83Y0.52Sm0.30Gd0.23Pr0.17La0.16Dy0.11Er0.03Tb0.03Ho0.01Yb0.01)Σ4.99(Si2.92P0.08As0.01)Σ3.01O12.00[O0.48F0.26(OH)0.14Cl0.10Br0.02]Σ1.00. The crystal structure of fluorbritholite-(Nd) was refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data to R1= 0.043 for 704 unique reflections. It belongs to the hexagonal system, space group P63/m, with unit cell parameters a = 9.5994(3), c = 6.9892(4) Å and V = 557.76(5) Å3 for Z = 2. Fluorbritholite-(Nd) and other britholite-group minerals are a major sink for neodymium in REE-bearing skarns of Bastnäs type.

Florencite was first discovered as a rare constituent of the cinnabar-bearing sands of Tripuhy, near Ouro Preto, Minas Geraes, Brazil. Here it occurred in well-developed crystals (up to ½ cm. in, length), in association with monazite, xenotime and the titano-anti. monates (lewisite and derbylite) previously described. Blowpipe experiments made hy Dr. W. Florence showed that the mineral was a phosphate of the cerium earths, while angular measurements of the crystals and observations of the optical characters suggested its close relationship with hamlinite, the new hydrated phosphate of aluminium, barium and strontium, recently described by Hidden and Penfield.

The recent finding of a stellerite-like mineral in California has led to this study of its relations to epidesmine and stilbite. The mineral was found by Mr. Allen Nichol, mineralogist of the Division of Highways, in the quarry of the Calavera Materials Company near Oceanside, San Diego County. Some specimens reached the writer through the State Division of Mines. The mineral occurs as sheaf-like clusters of small glistening white crystals in cracks and cavities of andesite. The largest crystals are nearly a quarter of an inch long, but tend to aggregate formation so that they do not lend themselves to accurate goniometric measurement. They are apparently orthorhombic, of tabular habit, showing the three pinakoids and small bright faces of a pyramid. The excellent pinakoid cleavage has a pearly lustre, and if this is taken as (010) the crystals, which show parallel extinction, have the same optical orientation as stellerite.
