Calcium carbonate forms three polymorphic minerals that are found in a variety of environments at the Earth’s surface. Other compounds in the aqueous system can inhibit or enhance the probability of one phase or another, favour growth of specific crystal faces, and change the rate of recrystallization. Control of crystal systems requires understanding of the relationships between the foreign agent and the CaCO3 mineral surface. This work, which examines the transformation of vaterite to calcite, is part of a larger project that aims to define some of the parameters that control calcite recrystallization and grain coarsening.

Meurigite is a new hydrated potassium iron phosphate related to kidwellite and with structural similarities to other late-stage fibrous ferric phosphate species. It has been found at four localities so far — the Santa Rita mine, New Mexico, U.S.A.; the Hagendorf-Sud pegmatite in Bavaria, Germany; granite pegmatite veins at Wycheproof, Victoria, Australia; and at the Gold Quarry Mine, Nevada, U.S.A. The Santa Rita mine is the designated type locality. Meurigite occurs as tabular, elongated crystals forming spherical and hemispherical clusters and drusy coatings. The colour ranges from creamy white to pale yellow and yellowish brown. At the type locality, the hemispheres may reach 2 mm across, but the maximum diameter reached in the other occurrences is usually less than 0.5 mm. A wide variety of secondary phosphate minerals accompanies meurigite at each locality, with dufrenite, cyrilovite, beraunite, rockbridgeite and leucophosphite amongst the most common. Vanadates and uranates occur with meurigite at the Gold Quarry mine.

Electron microprobe analysis and separate determination of H2O and CO2 on meurigite from the type locality gave a composition for which several empirical formulae could be calculated. The preferred formula, obtained on the basis of 35 oxygen atoms, is which simplies Qualitative analyses only were obtained for meurigite from the other localities, due to the softness and openness of the aggregates. Because of the fibrous nature of meurigite, it was not possible to determine the crystal structure, hence the exact stoichiometry remains uncertain. The lustre of meurigite varies from vitreous to waxy for the Santa Rita mine mineral, to silky for the more open sprays and internal surfaces elsewhere. The streak is very pale yellow to cream and the estimated Mohs hardness is about 3. Cleavage is perfect on {001} and fragments from the type material have a mean specific gravity of 2.96.

The strongest lines in the X-ray powder pattern for the type material are (dobs,Iobs,hkl) 3.216(100)404; 4.84(90)111; 3.116(80)205; 4.32(70)112; 9.41(60)201; 3.470(60)800. The X-ray data were indexed on the basis of a monoclinic unit cell determined from electron diffraction patterns. The cell parameters, refined by least squares methods, are a = 29.52(4), b = 5.249(6), c = 18.26(1) Å, β = 109.27(7)°, V = 2672(3) Å3, and Z = 4. The calculated density is 2.89 gcm−3. The space group is either C2, Cm or C2/m. X-ray powder data for meurigite are closely similar to those for kidwellite and phosphofibrite, but meurigite appears to be characterised by a strong 14 Å reflection. The relationship between these three minerals remains uncertain in the absence of structural data. On the available evidence, meurigite and kidwellite are not the respective K and Na-endmembers of a solid solution series. The meurigite cell parameters suggest it belongs to a structural family of fibrous ferric phosphates, such as rockbridgeite, dufrenite and beraunite, which have a discrete 5 Å fibre axis. Meurigite occurs in widely varying environments, its formation probably favoured by late-stage solutions rich in K rather than Na.

Viséite is a poorly crystalline mineral which is difficult to study by X-ray diffraction pattern. NMR is a very useful technique to study such poorly crystalline minerals, and 31P, 27Al, and 29Si MAS NMR in conjunction with powder XRD results show that at least our Viséite sample is not a single phase with a structure analogous to that of analcime as previously reported. Rather, it is very disordered with a structure similar to that of crandallite and includes other phases including an undefined aluminophosphate, opal, and a framework aluminosilicate, probably a zeolite. The previously reported variations in the Si content of Viséite are probably due to variable amounts of opal and the framework aluminosilicate.

Airborne dust generated by primary blasting was collected in Taffs Well Quarry, just north of Cardiff, Wales. Collections of airborne particulate matter were also made in the nearby village of Morganstown at the same time as the blasting collections. The explosions were recorded on a motor-driven camera and a digital video camera. These images show that the dust clouds generated by the explosions consist of three distinct components; a reddish-grey dust cloud, followed by a light grey dust cloud, and finally a pale grey cloud that stayed near the blast face. It is believed that the reddish-grey cloud was composed mostly of mineral grains, as evidenced by the chiefly red colour of the dolomitic limestone rock in the quarry. The whiter clouds contained more explosive combustion particles (diesel soot). The samples were studied by analytical scanning electron microscopy, very high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy, and image analysis. The two different components (minerals and diesel soot) can be readily seen under high-resolution electron microscopy. Any consideration of the possible adverse health effects or nuisance value of this dust needs to consider both of these components. A size distribution of the quarry particles shows that soot particles dominate the assemblage under 2 mm, whereas the mineral grains are more abundant over 2 mm. This contrasts with the Morganstown particle sizes, where the two components show similar size distributions. The determination of the mineralogy of the quarry dust and Morganstown particles has shown highly complex and heterogeneous mixtures, though some distribution patterns are emerging. It is concluded that much of the dust in Morganstown probably originated from sources other than the quarry, such as other local industries, roads and construction sites.

The new sodalite-group mineral bolotinaite, ideally (Na7□)(Al6Si6O24)F⋅4H2O, was discovered in a volcanic ejectum of trachitoid sanidinite collected from the In den Dellen (Zieglowski) pumice quarry, Laach Lake (Laacher See) palaeovolcano, Eifel region, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The associated minerals are sanidine, nepheline, annite and zircon. Bolotinaite occurs as isolated interpenetration prismatic twins on (111) up to 1.3 mm long, complex twins, and rare non-twinned rhombic dodecahedra up to 0.2 mm across. The colour of bolotinaite is pale yellow to pinkish coloured, the streak is white and the lustre is vitreous. Weak orange–yellow fluorescence under longwave ultraviolet radiation (λ = 330 nm) is due to the presence of trace amounts of the S2•– radical anion. Bolotinaite is brittle, with a Mohs’ hardness of 5. No cleavage is observed. The fracture is uneven. D(meas) = 2.27(2) g⋅cm–3, D(calc) = 2.291 g⋅cm–3. Bolotinaite is optically isotropic, with n = 1.488(2) (λ = 589 nm). The chemical composition is (wt.%, electron microprobe, CO2 determined by quantitative IR spectroscopy analysis, H2O calculated from the empirical formula with four H2O molecules per formula unit): Na2O 18.30, K2O 3.87, CaO 0.57, Al2O3 28.85, SiO2 37.97, CO2 1.66, SO3 1.37, F 1.60, Cl 0.57, 2.22, H2O 7.21, –O≡(F,Cl) –0.80, total 101.17. The empirical formula is (Na5.92K0.82Ca0.10H0.08)(Si6.33Al5.67O24)(SO4)0.17F0.84Cl0.16(H2O)3.96(CO2)0.38. A high content of H2O and the presence of CO2 molecules and H+ cations as well as trace amounts of S2•– are confirmed by means of infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The crystal structure was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to R = 0.0335. Bolotinaite is cubic, space group I$\bar{4}$3m, with a = 9.027(1) Å, V = 735.7(2) Å3 and Z = 1. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 6.36 (47) (110), 4.502 (10) (200), 3.679 (100) (211), 2.851 (28) (310), 2.603 (29) (222) and 2.126 (18) (330). The mineral is named in honour of the Russian crystallographer and crystal chemist Dr. Nadezhda Borisovna Bolotina (b. 1949).

Transparent prismatic crystals of Pb2(AsO2OH)Cl2 were collected in black metallurgical slag on the coast in the Punta Zeza area, 3 km south of the town of Lavrion, Greece. Analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) provided the following chemical composition: PbO 73.04, As2O3 15.97, Cl 11.42, O=Cl –2.58, total 97.85 wt.%. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of As = 1 is HxPb2.03(AsO3)1.00Cl1.995 (x = 0.96). The infrared spectrum of Pb2(AsO2OH)Cl2 has characteristic AsO33– bands at 707 and 594 cm–1, O–H stretching vibrations at 3310 and 2900 cm–1 and a band at 1107 cm–1 which is assigned to As–O–H bending vibrations. The structure, which is monoclinic P21/m, a = 6.4235(8), b = 5.5399(7), c = 9.321(1) Å, β = 90.767(2)°, V = 331.67(7) Å3, R1 = 0.035, is identical to that of synthetic Pb2(AsO2OH)Cl2 and contains two symmetrically unique Pb sites and one As site. The crystal structure is based on [Pb2AsO2OH]2+ double chains interconnected via weak Pb–Cl bonds to produce a three-dimensional framework which is closely related to that of Pb oxysalt minerals containing [O2Pb3]2+ chains of oxocentred [OPb4]6+ tetrahedra including mendipite, damaraite, rickturnerite and plumboselite.

Idiomorphic crystals (up to 3.5 mm) of ferroan platinum, cooperite and mertieite-II were found in a heavy-mineral concentrate from stream sediments of the Darya river in the Aldan Shield, Russia. Pt-Fe crystals display cubic and thin platy habits; occasionally they are twinned. The chemical composition ranges from Pt2.64Fe1.00 to Pt2.88Fe1.00 with Os, Ru, Ir, Rh and Pd below the analytical detection limit of the electron microprobe. X-ray diffractometry of Pt-Fe crystals suggests a F-centred cubic lattice, characteristic of ferroan platinum. Some of the ferroan platinum crystals have large (about 100 μm wide) cooperite overgrowth rims or are covered by a Au-Ag alloy. Cooperite also occurs as large euhedral crystals (up to 3 mm across, partly twinned). Crystals of mertieite-II are speckled with μm-sized (2–5 μm) inclusions of sperrylite and intergrown with minerals of cooperite-braggite solid solution, Pt-Pd-Hg alloy, keithconnite and Au-Ag alloy. Fractures along crystallographic planes of the mertieite-II crystals are filled with Pd-Pt-Fe-Sb-As-Hg-Te-Bi-bearing oxides. The coarse-grained PGM from the Darya have a geological setting similar to the Kondyor PGE placer 75 km to the northeast and are probably related to clinopyroxenite-hornblende-magnetite units of Alaskan-/Uralian-type intrusions.

Iron ore sinters prepared for the blast furnaces at Scunthorpe, Humberside, comprise iron oxides bound in a matrix of aluminium- and silicon-rich calcium ferrites with some calcium orthosilicate and a residual silicate glass. A super-silicon-deficient clinopyroxene with up to half of the Si in the chain replaced by Fe3+ and Al3+ precipitates from the glass in some areas. The iron oxides are principally magnetite and hematite with some wüstite in highly reduced areas. The calcium orthosilicate has been previously reported as the mineral larnite, β-Ca2SiO4. This study found a range of Fe for Ca substitution and three polymorphs were recognised: the range Ca2SiO4 to Ca1.85Fe0.15SiO4 has the structure of larnite; the range Ca1.85Fe0.15SiO4 to Ca1.6Fe0.4SiO4 has the structure of bredigite, α′-Ca2SiO4. Iron substitution beyond this, and up to a maximum of about Ca1.5Fe0.5SiO4, was not recognisable as a polymorph of Ca2SiO4, but an orthorhombic cell is tentatively proposed. The complex ferrite SFCA (silico-ferrite of Ca and Al) is variable in composition, but has a minimum of about 3 wt. % Al2O3 and contains 20 wt. % CaO and SiO2 with a Ca: Si ion ratio of about 2 : 1. A C-face centred monoclinic cell has been deduced: a 15.70, b 9.70, c 8.48 Å; β 105°30′. The Al appears critical for the formation of SFCA in sinter; without it, a eutectic of magnetite and bredigite precipitates in preference.

Bariopharmacoalumite-Q2a2b2c, Ba0.5(Cu,ZnO)0.1H0.6[Al4(OH)4(As0.9Al0.1O4)3]·5.5H2O, from the south mine of the old copper mine at Cap Garonne, France, has a 2 × 2 × 2 I-centred tetragonal superstructure of the basic pharmacosiderite-type structure. Cell parameters are a = 15.405(2) Å and c = 15.553(3) Å. The structure was determined and refined in I 2m to R 1= 0.057 for 2697 reflections with I > 2σ(I), using synchrotron X-ray data on a twinned crystal. The origin of the superlattice cell doubling was determined to be due predominantly to the ordering of Ba atoms in half of the [0 0 1] channels, centred at (0, 0, 0) and (½, ½, 0). The other channels, centred at (½, 0, 0) and (0, ½, 0), were found to be occupied by corner-connected chains of Cu/Zn-centred square planar units.

Sporadic small garnet granulite and two-pyroxene granulite xenoliths found in the carbonatite tuffs and lavas near Fort Portal, South West Uganda, are chiefly silica-saturated and rich in Al2O3 (> 20 wt. %) and Na2O (c. 2 to 4 wt. %). Three REE patterns are distinguished: LREE enriched—HREE depleted with a positive Eu anomaly; LREE depleted—HREE relatively enriched and flat; and LREE slightly enriched with a very weak Eu anomaly and high overall REE. The xenoliths are considered to represent original basaltic melts and fractional crystallisation products, varying with the dominance of the clinopyroxene, plagioclase or olivine crystallising phase. It is thought that REE abundances were established before metamorphism.

The clinopyroxenes are low-jadeitic augites, the orthopyroxenes, aluminous hypersthenes and the garnets, pyrope-almandine with constant grossularite. Plagioclase varies with increasing metamorphic grade from labradorite to andesine-oligoclase. Scapolite (meionite), alkali-feldspar, quartz, mica, amphibole, rutile and apatite are minor phases and some appear to be metasomatic.

Calculated temperatures of metamorphic equilibration range from 580 to 800°C at pressures > 4 kbar for the two-pyroxene granulites and > 6 kbar for the garnet granulites. A known geophysical discontinuity marking a density change at 16 km in the Western Rift may be due to the presence of two-pyroxene granulite, calculated to become garnet-bearing at depths greater than 23 km. The absence of proven omphacite-bearing eclogite xenoliths (with no plagioclase) indicates that the greatest depth of crustal sampling by the carbonatite in the Fort Portal field is about 25 km which could be the depth of the Moho in this area.

The quartz-monzonitic intrusion of ‘Botro ai Marmi’ in Tuscany, Italy, can be considered to be a typical example of an intrusion-centred magmatic hydrothermal system. The evolution of hydrothermal fluids in the ‘Botro ai Marmi’ intrusion was investigated using fluid-inclusion analyses to provide suitable physico-chemical constraints on the fluids involved in the late- to post-magmatic hydrothermal activity that affected the intrusion, providing inferences on their origin and variations of temperature and pressure with time.

This work demonstrates that the earliest fluids circulating in the ‘Botro ai Marmi’ intrusion were high-temperature brines exsolved directly from the crystallizing magma. This fluid circulated in the intrusion under lithostatic conditions (P > 90 MPa, T > 540°C). A second evolutionary stage of the magmatic hydrothermal system is marked by the transition from lithostatic (>90 MPa) to hydrostatic dominated conditions (50 to 10 MPa). In this stage the fluids are also interpreted to be mainly orthomagmatic in origin but unmixed in a high-salinity brine and in a low-salinity vapour aqueous phase, at a temperature ranging from ~500 to 300°C. These fluids were responsible for the potassic alteration facies. At a later stage of hydrothermal evolution, abundant meteoric dominated fluids entered the system and are associated with propylitic alteration. This event marks the transition from a magmatic-hydrothermal system to a typical hydrothermal (‘geothermal’) system, which can be assumed to be similar to some extent to the nearby active high-enthalpy geothermal system of Larderello. Low-temperature and low-salinity meteoric water-dominated fluids characterize the latest stage of the ‘Botro ai Marmi’ hydrothermal system.

Tangdanite, ideally Ca2Cu9(AsO4)4(SO4)0.5(OH)9·9H2O and monoclinic, is a new mineral species (IMA No. 2011-096) occurring in the Tangdan and Nanniping mines, southeast Dongchuan copper mining district, Dongchuan County, Kunming City Prefecture, Yunnan Province, P. R. China (26°11’N 103°51’E). The mineral is found in the oxidized zone (gossan) of an As-bearing Cu sulfide deposit and is clearly of supergene origin. Associated minerals are chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, covellite, tennantite, enargite, cuprite, malachite, azurite, copper and brochantite. Crystals form radiating or foliated aggregates of flaky crystals up to 3 mm, flattened parallel to (100) and elongated along [001]. It is emerald green with a light green streak, translucent and has a pearly to silky lustre. It is sectile having perfect cleavage on {100} although neither parting nor fracture was observed. No fluorescence in long- or short-wave ultraviolet radiation was observed. The hardness is VHN50 42.0−43.6, mean 42.8 kg mm−2 (2−2½ on the Mohs scale). The density measured by pycnometry is 3.22 g cm−3 (Ma et al., 1980). The calculated density from the empirical chemical formula is 3.32 g cm−3. The compatability index gives 1 − (Kp/Kc) = −0.041 (good). The empirical formula (based on 36 O a.p.f.u) of tangdanite is Ca2.05Cu9.08(As1.03O4)4(S0.63O4)0.5(OH)9·9H2.04O. The simplified formula is Ca2Cu9(AsO4)4(SO4)0.5(OH)9·9H2O. The strongest five reflections in the X-ray powder-diffraction pattern [d in Å(I) (hkl)] are: 4.782(100) ( 1 1), 4.333(71) (6 0 2), 5.263(54) ( 0 2), 3.949(47) (8 0 2) and 2.976(46) ( 1 1). The unit-cell parameters are a = 54.490(9), b = 5.5685(9), c = 10.4690(17) Å, β = 96.294(3)o, V = 3157.4(9) Å3, Z = 4. Its structure was solved and refined in space group C2/c, with R = 0.110.

Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd), Ag6(Cu4Cd2)Sb4S13, has been approved as a new mineral species by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association using samples from Rudno nad Hronom, Slovak Republic. It occurs as anhedral grains up to 30 μm in size, steel-grey to black in colour, with a metallic lustre, in association with greenockite and other tetrahedrite-group minerals [argentotetrahedrite-(Zn) and tetrahedrite-(Zn)], earlier base-metal minerals, Ag sulfides and sulfosalts (acanthite, pyrargyrite and polybasite) and later galena. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is isotropic, grey in colour, with a creamy tint and rapidly (tens of minutes) tarnishes to orange–brown. Reflectance data for Commission on Ore Mineralogy (COM) wavelengths in air are [λ (nm), R (%)]: 470, 30.4; 546, 30.3; 589, 30.3; and 650, 28.7. The chemical formula of the samples studied, recalculated on the basis of ΣMe = 16 atoms per formula unit, is: (Ag3.28Cu2.72)Ʃ6.00[Cu4(Cd1.68Fe0.27Zn0.16)]Ʃ6.11(Sb3.71As0.15)Ʃ3.86S12.79. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is cubic, I$\bar{4}$3m, with a = 10.65(2) Å, V = 1208(4) Å3 and Z = 2. Argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) is isotypic with other members of the tetrahedrite group. The structural relationship between argentotetrahedrite-(Cd) and other members of the freibergite series are discussed and previous findings of this species are briefly reviewed.

A new mineral species of the pyrochlore supergroup, hydroxyplumbopyrochlore (IMA2018-145), (Pb1.5,□0.5)Nb2O6(OH), has been discovered in the Jabal Sayid peralkaline granitic complex of the Arabian Shield, Saudi Arabia. It is associated with quartz, microcline, ‘biotite’, rutile, zircon, calcite, rhodochrosite, columbite-(Fe), goethite, thorite, bastnäsite-(Ce), xenotime-(Y), samarskite-(Y), euxenite-(Y), hydropyrochlore and fluornatropyrochlore. Hydroxyplumbopyrochlore usually shows euhedral octahedra, slightly rhombic dodecahedra and cubes or their combination (0.01–0.06 mm). The mineral is pale yellow to pale brown, transparent with white streak, and has adamantine to transparent lustre. It is brittle with conchoidal fracture. No cleavage or parting are observed. It is isotropic and non-fluorescent. The average microhardness is 463.4 kg mm–2. The calculated density is 6.474 g cm–3.

Hydroxyplumbopyrochlore belongs to the cubic crystal system and exhibits the space group Fd$\bar{3}$m with unit-cell parameters a = 10.5456(6) Å, V = 1172.8(2) Å3 and Z = 8. Electron microprobe analysis gave (6-point average composition, wt.%): CaO 0.32, SrO 0.16, FeO 0.17, Ce2O3 0.07, Pr2O3 0.02, PbO 51.69, Nb2O5 40.06, SiO2 0.05, TiO2 1.68, Ta2O5 4.74, H2Ocalc 0.95, total 99.90, yielding the empirical formula (Pb1.34Ca0.03Fe0.01Sr0.01□0.61)Σ2(Nb1.75Ti0.12Ta0.12Si0.01)Σ2O6(OH0.53O0.08□0.39)Σ1, where □ = vacancy. The Raman spectrum of hydroxyplumbopyrochlore contains the characteristic bands of O–H vibrations and no bands for H2O vibrations.

Microlite-group minerals occur as common replacement products after primary and secondary columbite-group minerals (CGM) in albitised blocky K-feldspar and in coarse-grained, muscovite-rich units of the Schinderhübel I, Scheibengraben and Bienergraben beryl–columbite pegmatites in the Maršíkov District (Silesian Unit, Bohemian Massif, Czech Republic). Textural and compositional variations of microlite-group minerals were examined using electron probe micro-analyses and microRaman spectroscopy (μRS). A complex post-magmatic evolution of the pegmatites and the following microlite populations (Mic) and related processes were found: (1) precipitation of U, Na-rich and F-poor Mic I on cracks in CGM; (2) alteration of Mic I to U-rich together with Na- and F-poor Mic II; and (3) partial replacement of Mic I and II by Mic III with a distinct Na, U and Ti loss and Ca and F gain. Stage (2) includes an extensive leaching of Na, without U loss. The final stage (3) produced euhedral-to-subhedral oscillatory zoned Ca and F enriched Mic III with distinctly different composition to the previous F-poor and A-site vacant Mic II. Aggregates of fersmite are associated commonly with Mic III. Distal Mic IIId occurs locally on cracks in K-feldspar or quartz, with compositions analogous to Mic III. Compositional variations and textural features of microlite-group minerals during dissolution–reprecipitation processes serve as sensitive tracers of post-magmatic evolution in granitic pegmatites recording complex interactions between magmatic pegmatite units and externally derived, hydrothermal metamorphic fluids.

The petrological and structural characteristics of four layered basic masses in Somalia are described. Sr contents of feldspars from three of the masses are similar for comparable An contents; Sr varies between 1000 and 1850 p.p.m. and tends to increase as An decreases from An68 to An48. In feldspars from the other mass Sr also increases with decreasing An content (An74 to An56), but is at a much higher general tenure (1650 to 2350 p.p.m.). It is concluded that the four masses were not all part of the same layered intrusion.
