Ruckle[4] used the idea of a modulus function ƒ (see Definition 1 below) to construct the sequence space

This space is an FK space, and Ruckle proved that the intersection of all such L(f) spaces is ø, the space of finite sequences, thereby answering negatively a question of A. Wilansky: ‘Is there a smallest FK-space in which the set {e1, e2, …} of unit vectors is bounded?’

A new formulation of Hamilton's principle for the case of an ideal fluid is proposed which is claimed to be the uniquely proper form for such a system. The resulting derivation of the equations of motion on varying with respect to the position of the fluid particles is free from the difficulties encountered in previous treatments based on incorrect forms of Hamilton's principle. The treatment also differs from previous treatments in transforming to the fixed (a, b, c) space before carrying out the variation, and in allowing for the equations of mass and entropy conservation by means of undetermined multipliers. The necessity for conservation of entropy, if Hamilton's principle is to be applied, is emphasized. Finally, the method, first used by Eckart, of deriving the equations of motion for an ideal fluid by means of a variational principle of the same form as Hamilton's, but varying with respect to the velocities of the fluid particles, is extended to the general case of rotational motion.

There has been considerable interest of late in fractals, both in their occurrence in the sciences, and in their mathematical theory. A general account of fractals is given by Mandelbrot [10], whilst a more mathematical approach may be found in Falconer [5].

The purpose of this paper is to provide a point of vantage from which to attack combinatorial problems in what may be termed modern, synthetic, or abstract algebra. In this spirit, a research has been made into the consequences and applications of seven or eight axioms, only one [V] of which is itself new.

The hypothetical model that we shall be considering in this paper is referred to as the single-server queue, and the details of this model are given in a recent paper by Lindley(5). The present treatment involves exactly the same assumptions as Lindley has given already, and we refer to his paper for a rigorous statement of them. Briefly, we shall be assuming general independent service times and general independent input or arrival times. Theoretical studies of the single-server queue are capable of wide applications, many of which are described in a paper by Kendall (4) and in the discussion to that paper.

Boltzmann's differentio-integral equation for the molecular velocity distribution function in a perfect gas forms the natural starting-point for a mathematical treatment of the kinetic theory of gases. The classical results of Maxwell and Boltzmann in this theory are well known. They include the proof that, for simple gases, i.e. those in which the molecules have only the three translational degrees of freedom, the only stationary and spatially homogeneous solution is the one which corresponds to the Maxwellian distribution.

The propagation of a scalar wave is studied, after it has suffered changes of phase in its passage through an irregular refracting medium, such as the ionosphere. The rms phase fluctuations may be large; i.e. greater than one radian. The paper is in three parts. In the first, the receiver is at a great distance from the screen (Fraunhofer diffraction), and a formula is found for all even order moments of the amplitude, and for the correlation function of the even powers of the amplitude. The probability distribution of the amplitude is proved to be a Rice distribution. The multiple integrals expressing the moments of the amplitude reduce to sums of correlations of the original phase fluctuations amongst points over the screen, which are evaluated using combinatorial arguments.

In the second part the variance of the square of the amplitude is calculated numerically for points near the screen (Fresnel diffraction). When the rms phase fluctuation is greater than one the variance is maximum near the point where the irregularities in the screen would bring the rays to a focus.

In the third part radio star scintillation and scatter propagation are discussed in the light of the theory.

The cross-sections for the emission of radiation by very fast electrons (energy great compared with mc2) and for the production of pairs of positive and negative electrons by very hard γ-rays is calculated, considering the screening of the atomic field in which the processes happen. The main part of the paper deals with the integration of the differential cross-section over the angles. It is found that the integral cross-section increases steadily with increasing energy of the primary particle, reaching an asymptotic value for extremely high energies.

The numerical and experimental results given in Madsen and Mei(16) are predicted using asymptotic methods and some knowledge of the Korteweg-de Vries (K-dV) equation. This is accomplished by first deriving, using formal asymptotic expansions, the K-dV equation valid over a variable depth. The depth is chosen, in the first instance, to slowly vary on the same scale as the initial (small) amplitude of the motion. The appropriate form of the Kd-V equation is then

where H(X,ξ) describes the surface profile and d(σX) is the changing depth. The rest of the paper is devoted to a study of this equation.

1. There has been much interest recently in ‘instantons’. These correspond, in differential geometric terms, to connexions in principal bundles over Euclidean 4-space whose curvature satisfies the Yang-Mills equations. The connexion is also required to approach the trivial connexion at infinity. The self-dual solutions have been classified by converting the problem into one of algebraic geometry using the ideas of R. Penrose and R. Ward

In this paper I shall show how certain bounds on the possible diagrams presenting a given oriented knot or link K can be found from its two-variable polynomial PK defined in [3]. The inequalities regarding exponent sum and braid index of possible representations of K by a closed braid which are proved in [5] and [2] follow as a special case.

The notion of fractional dimensions is one which is now well known. The object of the present paper is the investigation of the dimensional numbers of sets of points which, when expressed as continued fractions, obey some simple restriction as to their partial quotients. The sets considered are naturally of linear measure zero. Those properties of the partial quotients which hold for almost all continued fractions make up the subject called by Khintchine ‘the measure theory of continued fractions’.

The stability of the self-exciting disk dynamo is considered. If there is no electrical load in parallel with the field coil and no friction at the axle, the dynamo can perform oscillations of constant amplitude about its state of steady motion. Viscous forces on the axle cause the dynamo to settle to a steady motion. A parallel load may have an effect similar to that of viscous forces or may cause the oscillations to grow without limit. With both a parallel load and viscous forces the amplitude of the oscillations is bounded.

Possible analogies between these results and the motion of a body of electrically conducting fluid in a magnetic field are discussed. The main applications are astronomical and geophysical.

It frequently happens that we wish to evaluate the total energy of the mobile, or π, electrons in an unsaturated hydrocarbon molecule. According to the method of molecular orbitals(1) this energy is the sum of individual electronic energies ∊r, and the summation is over all the occupied orbitals. The energies ∊r are the roots of the secular determinant, and, if we write

It is known that, for n ≤3, ‘ought to have’ can truthfully be replaced by ‘has’ (see (4), and (5), Cor. 6·6). In this paper, this conjecture will be proved for n ≥ 5. The only unsolved case then will be in dimension four.

In 1951 A. S. Besicovitch, who was my research supervisor, suggested that I look at the problem of determining the dimension of the range of a Brownian motion path. This problem had been communicated to him by C. Loewner, but it was a natural question which had already attracted the attention of Paul Lévy. It was a good problem to give to an ignorant Ph.D. student because it forced him to learn the potential theory of Frostman [33] and Riesz[75] as well as the Wiener [98] definition of mathematical Brownian motion. In fact the solution of that first problem in [81] used only ideas which were already twenty-five years old, though at the time they seemed both new and original to me. My purpose in this paper is to try to trace the development of these techniques as they have been exploited by many authors and used in diverse situations since 1953. As we do this in the limited space available it will be impossible to even outline all aspects of the development, so I make no apology for giving a biased account concentrating on those areas of most interest to me. At the same time I will make conjectures and suggest some problems which are natural and accessible in the hope of stimulating further research.

Quillen [17] introduced model categories as an abstract framework for homotopy theory which would apply to a wide range of mathematical settings. By all accounts this program has been a success and—as, e.g., the work of Voevodsky on the homotopy theory of schemes [15] or the work of Joyal [11, 12] and Lurie [13] on quasicategories seem to indicate—it will likely continue to facilitate mathematical advances. In this paper we present a novel connection between model categories and mathematical logic, inspired by the groupoid model of (intensional) Martin–Löf type theory [14] due to Hofmann and Streicher [9]. In particular, we show that a form of Martin–Löf type theory can be soundly modelled in any model category. This result indicates moreover that any model category has an associated “internal language” which is itself a form of Martin-Löf type theory. This suggests applications both to type theory and to homotopy theory. Because Martin–Löf type theory is, in one form or another, the theoretical basis for many of the computer proof assistants currently in use, such as Coq and Agda (cf. [3] and [5]), this promise of applications is of a practical, as well as theoretical, nature.

Problems dealing with the generation of surface waves in water involve the consideration of singularities of different types in the liquid. In the case when bodies are present in the liquid, waves may be either generated by the movement of the body, or reflected from the body. The two cases are essentially equivalent, and the resulting motion can be described by a series of singularities placed within the body. The boundary conditions on the surface of the body give equations from which the exact form of the potential can be obtained. Ursell (10) has solved in this manner the problem, earlier discussed by Dean(1), of the generation of surface waves by a submerged circular cylinder. In this two-dimensional problem he used a series of complex potential functions arising from multipoles at the centre of the cylinder, but the velocity potential of the motion could have been described, without the introduction of the stream function, in terms of the velocity potentials of the multipoles.

In (13), Quillen defines a higher algebraic K-theory by taking homotopy groups of the classifying spaces of certain categories. Certain questions in K-theory then become questions such as when do functors induce a homotopy equivalence of classifying spaces, or when is a square of categories homotopy cartesian? Quillen has given some techniques for answering such questions. F. Waldhausen has extended these ideas in (19), and broadened the range of applications to include geometric topology (20).

It is proved that if there exists a sufficient statistic for the estimation of an unknown parameter of a population, the frequency function of the population must be of a certain type.

It is shown that some modification of previous theory of the intrinsic accuracy of statistics is necessary when the range of the population sampled is a function of the parameter to be estimated.

Finally, the theory is extended to sufficient sets of statistics, i.e. sets of statistics which together contain all the information provided by a sample about an unknown parameter.
