In this paper we conduct a systematic computerized search for groups generated by small, but highly symmetric, sets of elements of order 3. Many classical groups are readily obtained in this way, as are a number of sporadic simple groups. Firstly, we introduce monomial modular representations as these will prove useful later in the paper. Then the techniques of symmetric generation developed elsewhere are described afresh. The results we obtain are presented in a convenient tabular form, together with relevant character tables.

We consider some special operators on a locally convex Hausdorff space to itself, which have neat spectral theories and prove some perturbation results. This leads us to define and study a few special classes of locally convex spaces in which various subsets of the algebra of continuous linear operators either coincide or are closely related with each other. These are then compared to the classes of barrelled, infrabarrelled and DF-spaces and examples are given to distinguish them from one another.

Recently, through a repeated application of one-dimensional finite integral transforms, Cinelli(1) gave a solution for the temperature distribution in a hollow circular cylinder of finite length. Since no new ideas or techniques are introduced, the extension claimed in (1) with regard to the finite Hankel transform technique employed in the transformation of the radial space variable in the hollow cylinder problem is trivial, in view of well-known works by Sneddon(2) and Tranter (3), to mention a few. The list of the finite Hankel transforms given in (1) for a variety of boundary conditions at r = a and r = b is the result of routine, algebraic manipulations well known from the general theory of eigenvalue problems specialized for the hollow cylinder. In this list a set of seemingly different series expansions is given for the inverse Hankel transform for each combination of boundary conditions at the two radial surfaces. In each case, the two expressions for inversion can readily be shown to be identical to each other when use is made of the frequency equation. One of the inversion forms is therefore unnecessary once the other is given. Furthermore, the general solution as given by equation (54) of Cinelli(1)does not satisfy his boundary conditions (27), (28), (29) and (30), unless these latter are homogeneous.

The following paper aims at a more general treatment than has hitherto been given, of the integral expansions of arbitrary functions, from the point of view of integral equation theory.

A systematic analysis is made of the equation ∇. [k(r) ∇ψ] = 0 for useful profiles k(r) in spherically stratified media which enable the radial variation of the potential function ψ to be expressed exactly in terms of hypergeometric functions or confluent hypergeometric functions. Previously known profiles are shown to emerge as special cases of the present analysis.

Let X be an algebraic (complete) variety over a fixed algebraically closed field k. To every Cartier divisor D on X, we can associate the graded k-algebra . As is known, for a semi-ample divisor D, R(X, D) is a finitely generated k-algebra (see [21] or [9]), while this property is no longer true for arbitrary nef and big divisors (see [21]).

We prove that if G is a centre-by-metabelian pro-p group of type FPm over , so every homomorphic image of G is of type FPm over .

The recent progress of modern algebra in analysing, from the algebraic standpoint, the foundations of algebraic geometry, has been marked by the rapid development of what may be called ‘analytic algebra’. By this we mean the topological theories of Noetherian rings that arise when one uses ideals to define neighbourhoods; this includes, for instance, the theory of power-series rings and of local rings. In the present paper some applications are made of this kind of algebra to some problems connected with the notion of a branch of a variety at a point.

In this paper we obtain a cohomological splitting criterion for locally free sheaves on arithmetically Cohen–Macaulay surfaces with cyclic Picard group, which is similar to Horrocks' splitting criterion for locally free sheaves on projective spaces. We also recover a duality property which identifies a general K3 surface with a certain moduli space of stable sheaves on it, and obtain examples of stable, arithmetically Cohen–Macaulay, locally free sheaves of rank two on general surfaces of degree at least five in ${\mathbb P}^3$.

In a previous publication (1) the author described experiments in which the “overshoot phenomenon” reported by Silsbee, Scott and Brickwedde (2) might have been expected but was not observed. The specimens used were straight wires mounted so as to be completely surrounded by the liquid helium bath. Silsbee and his co-workers used wires coiled on paper or glass cylinders. It was concluded that the “overshoot phenomenon” was due to this method of mounting the specimen and was therefore a secondary effect.

Recall that in (2) we showed that it was possible to make transverse a homology manifold and PL-manifold inside a large dimensional homology manifold, subject to being able to do some general position inside the large manifold. In (1) we were able to relax the condition that one of the submanifolds be a PL-manifold to it being a homotopy manifold. The way in which the making transverse was achieved was via a system of h-cobordisms from the original situation to the transverse one. The problem we tackle here is that of making a map between homology manifolds transverse regular. Thus we ask: given a map f: M → N of homology manifolds with P a proper submanifold of N, is it possible to homotop f to a map g: M → N such that g−1(P) is a proper submanifold of M and g induces a map from the normal bundle of g−1(P) in M to the normal bundle of P in N?

For a gas with a general equation of state the stream function for the flow past a flat plate is determined when the plate is held at an angle ½π–α to the stream. At infinity the Mach number M1 = 1 and free streamlines, on which M1 = 1, extend from the edges of the plate to infinity downstream. The method of solution requires the determination of the correct singularity corresponding to the free stream and the subsequent satisfying of the boundary conditions. The drag coefficient is determined in the form of a contour integral and the computational problems in evaluating the drag are discussed. The integral is evaluated for small values of α for a gas with an equation of state as given by Tomotika and Tamada(6).

Let M be a smooth n-manifold, X be a smooth (2n − 1)-manifold, and g:M → X be a map. It was proved in [6] that g is always homotopic to an immersion. The set of homotopy classes of monomorphisms from TM into g*TX, which is denoted by Sg, may be enumerated either by the method of I. M. James and E. Thomas or by the singularity method of U. Koschorke (see [1] and references therein). When the natural action of π1(XM, g) on Sg is trivial, for example, if X is euclidean, the set Sg is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of regular homotopy classes of immersions homotopic to g (see e.g. [4]).

Let D be the unit disc in the complex plane ℂ with centre 0 and let ∂D be its boundary. By Möb (D) we denote the group of all Möbius transformations which leave D invariant. For a compact irreducible 3-manifold containing 2-sided projective planes and admitting a ℤ2-action, we consider the problem of when there exists a ℤ2-equivariant hierarchy. We show that a ℤ2-equivariant hierarchy always exists if either every irreducible summand of the orientable double cover has infinite first homology or every 2-sided projective plane is boundary parallel.

In this paper, a distance formula to a Douglas algebra is established. We use this distance formula to show that the distance of an L∞ function to the intersection of arbitrary Douglas algebras is equivalent to the supremum of the distance of that function to these algebras. As an application, we prove that the Bourgain algebra of the intersection of two Douglas algebras is equal to the intersection of the Bourgain algebras of these two algebras.

We study the Hausdorff dimensions of certain sets of non-normal numbers defined in terms of the exact rate of convergence of digits in their N-adic expansions. As an application of our results we analyse the rate of convergence of local dimensions of multinomial measures.
