1. Introduction. In a principal ideal domain R, any two-sided ideal is of the form Rc = cR, i.e. it has an invariant element as generator, and the customary development of ideal theory in a principal ideal domain (cf. e.g. (10), ch. III) takes on a more transparent form when expressed in terms of invariant elements. Likewise, the one-sided bounded ideals may be studied in terms of their generators.

Kwapień(2) and Schwartz (3) have shown that the inclusion mapping I: ι1→ι2 is 0-radonifying. We shall give another proof of this, using an inequality due to Khint-chine(1).

We extend Thurston’s topological characterisation theorem for postcritically finite rational maps to a class of rational maps which have a fixed bounded type Siegel disk. This makes a small step towards generalizing Thurston’s theorem to geometrically infinite rational maps.

It is well known ((1), pp. 120–1) that if G is a finite p–group then the factor group G/G′ is cyclic if and only if G is itself cyclic. A trivial consequence of this fact is that, in such a case, the factor group G′/G″ is the unit group. (As usual, G(r) denotes the rth derived group of the group G.)

We prove the following theorem.

We give a complete description of the additive Dyer-Lashof operations on the Hopf ring with coefficients in . We re-prove a result of Ravenel and Wilson [9] giving the operations on the element and give formulae for the operations on the other generators.

The notion of the order of convergence of iterative processes may well have been known to Gauss or even Newton, but to the author's knowledge it was first considered in detail in 1870 by Schröder(5). The subject was later investigated independently by Hartree(4) and Bodewig(1). Hartree alone mentions, briefly, the extension from one to several variables, but gives no detailed analysis. Domb and Fisher(2) consider a particular type of iterative process in several variables, which they call ‘degenerate’, in which all the variables tend to the same value. We shall follow essentially Hartree's treatment, in considering the solution of r simultaneous equations in r variables and applications to a generalization of the Newton-Raphson process.

The first two papers of Reifenberg ((4), (5)) under the general heading ‘Parametric Surfaces’ contain a detailed and profound study of the tangential properties of these surfaces. Since their publication one of the fundamental problems in the subject, that of obtaining a convenient representation for the surface, has been solved by Cesari (1). In this paper we obtain direct proofs of Reifenberg's results from Cesari's theorem. Whereas Reifenberg had to contend with both topological and real-variable problems combined the effect of Cesari's theorem is to remove the topological difficulties and to leave a straightforward real variable problem. The definition of approximate tangential plane used here is not the same as either of the two employed by Reifenberg, but the differences between it and one of Reifenberg's definitions ((5), definition 2) are not very important.

§ 1. The groundwork of the present paper is a general transformation of Maxwell's equations. As relativist speculation had its origin in a simple transformation, it was to be expected that something more would result when the general transformation was explored: the determining influence has proved stronger than I had anticipated.

The Rikitake two-disc system [10] has been proposed as a model of the Earth's magnetic dipole. Numerical integration of the system by Rikitake[10] and Allan [1] showed the phenomenon of polarity reversal which is seen in terrestrial paleomagnetic data [6]. Reversals in the simulations occurred at irregular and apparently unpredictable time intervals, in accord with the capricious character of the real data, though the agreement was qualitative rather than quantitative.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for sequence-to-sequence or sequence-to-function summability method to include (R, λ, α), when 1 < α ≤ 2, are given. Also, for suitably restricted sequences λ, necessary and sufficient conditions for a series-to-sequence or series-to-function summability method to include (R, λ, α) for 1 < α ≤ 2 are given. These results are obtained by showing that a certain sequence {δj} (j ≥ 0) is a Schauder-basis in Rλα(N) for each α, 1 < α ≤ 2.

We prove a combination theorem for hyperbolic groups, in the case of groups acting on complexes displaying combinatorial features reminiscent of non-positive curvature. Such complexes include for instance weakly systolic complexes and C'(1/6) small cancellation polygonal complexes. Our proof involves constructing a potential Gromov boundary for the resulting groups and analyzing the dynamics of the action on the boundary in order to use Bowditch’s characterisation of hyperbolicity. A key ingredient is the introduction of a combinatorial property that implies a weak form of non-positive curvature, and which holds for large classes of complexes.

As an application, we study the hyperbolicity of groups obtained by small cancellation over a graph of hyperbolic groups.

1. Introduction. If G is a locally compact Hausdorff topological group, and μ is (left) Haar measure on G, then we denote by ℬ(G) the class of all Borel subsets of G having finite measure, and by VG the set {μ(E): E ∊ ℬ(G)} of real numbers. The product set function of G, ΦG: VG × VG → VG, is defined (see (4) and (5)) by

In these Proceedings, Vol. xx (1920), pp. 198–204, the writer ventured (l.c. p. 203) on some remarks as to the reason why Sir G. Darwin and Mr Jeans had obtained discordant results for the stability of the pear-shaped figure of equilibrium, suggesting that this was due to a different mode of expansion of the functions involved. Sir G. Darwin used an infinite series of Lamé functions; Mr Jeans' method was equivalent to using the early parts from an expansion, of which every term, when expressed as an integral series of Lamé functions, would be an infinite series. At that time there was difficulty in obtaining Liapounoff's papers; since then, by the kindness of M. Belopolsky, of Pulkova, the whole of the four parts of Liapounoff's publication “Sur les figures d'équilibre peu différentes des ellipsoïdes d'une masse liquide homogène douèe d'un mouvement de rotation,” in all over 750 large folio pages, have become available; and these are now in the market. It is particularly interesting to see that the fourth part (1914) is devoted precisely to that change in the method of development which would arise in passing from Sir G. Darwin's expansion to the other expansion referred to above. And it is only by this change that Liapounoff is able to give the general proof of a form of expression of his results—in terms of polynomials and not infinite series—upon which his theorem of instability is made to depend. The careful consideration of the convergence of his expansions, which adds so greatly to the length of Liapounoff's papers, supplies materials for the proof that the expansion used in Mr Jeans' paper can be placed on a sure foundation, while Sir G. Darwin's expansion requires an estimation of the remainder.

In Ewald's theory of crystal optics, based on classical principles, an optical wave through a crystal lattice of polarizable atoms (idealized as isotropic oscillators) is a self-sustaining system of vibrations so constituted that, on the one hand, the electric moment of each atom is caused to oscillate by the electromagnetic field and, on the other hand, the electromagnetic field is itself the resultant field due to the superposition of the dipole waves produced by the lattice atoms. Born extended the theory to the case of movable lattice ions and showed that in an optical wave the electromagnetic field is so coupled to the lattice vibrations that each lattice ion vibrates in phase with the local field which, as in Ewald's case, is itself produced by the vibrating ions. In Born's original theory, the motion of the lattice particles had to be treated by classical mechanics. It is shown that the results of the quantum-mechanical treatment of the lattice motion agrees exactly with the classical theory. Not only is the induced current at each lattice point in phase with the local field, but the magnitude of the current is also identical with the classical value, completely independent of whichever vibrational state the crystal might be in.

A classical result of Pólya states that 2z is the slowest growing transcendental entire function taking integer values on the non-negative integers. Langley generalised this result to show that 2z is the slowest growing transcendental function in the closed right half-plane Ω = {z ∈ : Re(z) ≥ 0} taking integer values on the non-negative integers. Let E be a subset of the Gaussian integers in the open right half-plane with positive lower density and let f be an analytic function in Ω taking values in the Gaussian integers on E. Then in this paper we prove that if f does not grow too rapidly, then f must be a polynomial. More precisely, there exists L > 0 such that if either the order of growth of f is less than 2 or the order of growth is 2 and the type is less than L, then f is a polynomial.

We provide a concise account of the influence of design variables on the convergence rate in an L1 regression problem. In particular, we show that the convergence rate may be characterized precisely in terms of third and fourth moments of the design variables. This result leads to necessary and sufficient conditions on the design for the Berry-Esseen rate to be achieved. We also show that a moment condition on the error distribution is necessary and sufficient for a non-uniform Berry-Esseen theorem, and that an Edgeworth expansion is possible if the design points are not too clumped.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the structure of fuzzes, introduced by Hutton. We shall not be concerned here with fuzzy topology, but we think that a deeper knowledge of the properties of fuzzes may be helpful in several fields of fuzzy set theory, and in the study of fuzzy topological spaces in particular.
