We may define a mobility problem to be one of the type: ‘Given a (fully or partlys pecified) collection of bodies in ℝn, assumed not to interpenetrate, can they be moved in some (fully or partly specified) fashion?’ Early examples of mobility problems nclude ‘Chinese puzzles’ and Sam Loyd's ‘15 puzzle’ (to which could be added the more recent Rubik's Cube!) Less combinatorial examples include the ‘piano mover’ problem (see, e.g. [2, 3, 9]) and the several recent papers on collision avoidance, such as [1, 5, 6, 7, 8].

In many cases of practical interest there is some kind of symmetry associated with an ordinary second-order differential equation of the Schrödinger type. This symmetry is reflected in certain relations between different F-matrices or different elements of the same F-matrix of the phase-integral method. These symmetry relations imply in turn further relations between the Stokes constants, in addition to those which exist for a general cluster of transition points, and thereby reduce the number of independent Stokes constants. The present paper deals with two important kinds of symmetry relations.

Conditions are given on the real coefficients p, q and r and the weight w, for the fourth order formally symmetric differential expression

to have the properties of being strong limit-2 and Dirichlet at ∞, when considered in the weighted Hilbert space, . These extend existing results due to both W. N. Everitt and V. Krishna Kumar and cover an expression which is important in the study of certain orthogonal polynomials.

In this paper, we extend the definition of property T and strong property T to general C*-algebras (not necessarily unital). We show that if an inclusion pair of locally compact groups (G,H) has property T, then (C*(G), C*(H)) has property T. As a partial converse, if T is abelian and C*(G) has property T, then T is compact. We also show that if Ω is a first countable locally compact Hausdorff space, then C0(Ω) has (strong) property T if and only if Ω is discrete. Furthermore, the non-unital C*-algebra $c_0(\mathbb{Z}^n)\rtimes SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ has strong property T when n ≥ 3. We also give some equivalent forms of strong property T, which are new even in the unital case.

Throughout this note we shall consider a fixed polynomial with complex coefficients and of degree n ≥ 2. Its zeros will be denoted by ξ1, ξ2, …, ξn where the numbering is such that Making use of Jensen's integral formula, Mahler (4) showed that, for l ≥ k < n, A slightly weaker result had been established by Feldman in an earlier publication (2). Mahler's inequality (1) is of importance in the study of transcendental numbers, and our first object is to sharpen his bound by proving the following result.

In his well-known treatise, Banach mentions that there exist complete normed bi-orthogonal systems in any finite-dimensional (real) Banach space—a result he attributes to H. Auerbach ((1), p. 238). The purpose of this note is to present a proof of this result (valid for complex as well as real Banach spaces), and to give some applications to the theory of tensor products of Banach spaces.

We prove a new structure theorem which we call the Countable Layer Theorem. It says that for any compact group G we can construct a countable descending sequence G = Ω0(G) ⊇ … ⊇ Ωn(G) … of closed characteristic subgroups of G with two important properties, namely, that their intersection ∩∞n=1 Ωn(G) is Z0(G0), the identity component of the center of the identity component G0 of G, and that each quotient group Ωn−1(G)/Ωn(G), is a cartesian product of compact simple groups (that is, compact groups having no normal subgroups other than the singleton and the whole group).

In the special case that G is totally disconnected (that is, profinite) the intersection of the sequence is trivial. Thus, even in the case that G is profinite, our theorem sharpens a theorem of Varopoulos [8], who showed in 1964 that each profinite group contains a descending sequence of closed subgroups, each normal in the preceding one, such that each quotient group is a product of finite simple groups. Our construction is functorial in a sense we will make clear in Section 1.

We describe the formal framework for cellularization functors in triangulated categories and study the preservation of ring and module structures under these functors in stable homotopy categories in the sense of Hovey, Palmieri and Strickland, such as the homotopy category of spectra or the derived category of a commutative ring. We prove that cellularization functors preserve modules over connective rings but they do not preserve rings in general (even if the ring is connective or the cellularization functor is triangulated). As an application of these results, we describe the cellularizations of Eilenberg–Mac Lane spectra and compute all acyclizations in the sense of Bousfield of the integral Eilenberg–Mac Lane spectrum.

Let HX be the trigraded Hilbert function of a set X of reduced points in $\mathbb{P}$1 × $\mathbb{P}$1 × $\mathbb{P}$1. We show how to extract some geometric information about X from HX. This paper generalises a similar result of Giuffrida, Maggioni and Ragusa about sets of points in $\mathbb{P}$1 × $\mathbb{P}$1.

The homotopy coherent nerve from simplicial categories to simplicial sets and its left adjoint are important to the study of (∞, 1)-categories because they provide a means for comparing two models of their respective homotopy theories, giving a Quillen equivalence between the model structures for quasi-categories and simplicial categories. The functor also gives a cofibrant replacement for ordinary categories, regarded as trivial simplicial categories. However, the hom-spaces of the simplicial category X arising from a quasi-category X are not well understood. We show that when X is a quasi-category, all Λ21 horns in the hom-spaces of its simplicial category can be filled. We prove, unexpectedly, that for any simplicial set X, the hom-spaces of X are 3-coskeletal. We characterize the quasi-categories whose simplicial categories are locally quasi, finding explicit examples of 3-dimensional horns that cannot be filled in all other cases. Finally, we show that when X is the nerve of an ordinary category, X is isomorphic to the simplicial category obtained from the standard free simplicial resolution, showing that the two known cofibrant “simplicial thickenings” of ordinary categories coincide, and furthermore its hom-spaces are 2-coskeletal.

The main aim of the present note is to evaluate certain definite integrals involving Meijer's G-function. The results proved are of general character and include as particular cases some of the results given earlier by MacRobert ((3), p. 81). For the definitions and properties of the G-functions see (1), §§5·3 and 5·3·1.

Let P(n) = [x1, . . ., xn] = ⊕d≥0Pd(n) be the polynomial algebra viewed as a graded left module over the Steenrod algebra at the prime 2. The grading is by the degree of the homogeneous polynomials Pd(n) of degree d in the n variables x1, . . ., xn. The algebra P(n) realizes the cohomology of the product of n copies of infinite real projective space. We recall that a homogeneous element f of grading d in a graded left -module M is hit if there is a finite sum f = ΣiSqi(hi), called a hit equation, where the pre-images hi ∈ M have grading strictly less than d and the Sqi, called the Steenrod squares, generate . One of the important parts of the hit problem is to check whether a given polynomial in M is hit or not. In this article we study this problem in the 3-variable case.

Let τ be the formally self-adjoint differential operator denned by

where the pr(x) are real-valued, , and p0(x) > 0. Then τ determines a real symmetric linear operator T0, given by T0f = τf, whose domain D(T0) consists of those functions f in the complex space L2(0, ∞) which have compact support and 2n continuous derivatives in (0, ∞) and vanish in some right neighbourhood of x = 0 ((7), p. 27–8). Since D(T0) is dense in L2(0, ∞), T0 has a self-adjoint extension T. We denote by μ the least limit point of the spectrum of T. The operator T may not be unique, but all such T have the same essential spectrum ((7), p. 28) and therefore μ does not depend on the choice of T.

The conjugate g of a periodic and integrable function f is not necessarily integrable, even when f is monotone inside its fundamental interval. Paley and Wiener, however, proved that g is integrable if f is monotone and odd. A simpler proof was given later by Zygmund‡.

The differential equation

defining the function of the amplitude sL is integrated by an iterative procedure. An expression for the phase

is obtained in terms of integrals of ωL and its derivatives. The method is applied to the numerical calculation of Coulomb functions and the accuracy of the results is discussed. Recurrence relations are used to obtain øL, L ≽ 1.

To investigate invariants of links derived from their diagrams, the recent new polynomial invariants of links play important roles. Murasugi6, 7, Kauffman3 and Thistlethwaite 9 independently showed that the number of crossings in a proper connected alternating diagram of a link is the minimal-crossing number of the link and that the writhe of the diagram is invariant. Murasugi 8 also determined the minimal-crossing number of torus links. In 5, Lickorish and Thistlethwaite introduced the concept of an adequate link diagram and showed that the number of crossings in an adequate diagram of a semi-alternating link is the minimal-crossing number of the link. They also determined the minimal-crossing number of almost all Montesinos links. In this paper we show that for some links represented by plats and braids which are not adequate, the numbers of crossings in the diagrams are the minimal-crossing numbers of the links.

This note is devoted to the construction of a 〈Q, EΦ〉-closed Fischer class which is not a formation. It provides a negative answer to the Questions 3–7 raised by Cossey in (1). All groups considered are finite and soluble.

Let D be an integrally closed local Noetherian domain of Krull dimension 2, and let f be a nonzero element of D such that fD has prime radical. We consider when an integrally closed ring H between D and Df is determined locally by finitely many valuation overrings of D. We show such a local determination is equivalent to a statement about the exceptional prime divisors of normalized blow-ups of D and, when D is analytically normal, this property holds for D if and only if it holds for the completion of D. This latter fact, along with MacLane's notion of key polynomials, allows us to prove that in some central cases where D is a regular local ring and f is a regular parameter of D, then H is determined locally by a single valuation. As a consequence, we show that if H is also the integral closure of a finitely generated D-algebra, then the exceptional prime ideals of the extension H/D are comaximal. Geometrically, this translates into a statement about intersections of irreducible components in the closed fiber of the normalization of a proper birational morphism.

1. The only double binary forms for which the complete systems of invariants and covariants are known appear to be the (1, 1), (2, 1) and (2, 2) forms, for which the complete systems were determined sixty years ago by Peano. In the present paper we determine the complete system of the binary (3, 1) form and establish its irreducibility. The system proves to contain twenty forms, and is thus scarcely more complicated than that of the (2, 2) form which includes eighteen concomitants, and much simpler than that of the (2, 1, 1) form derived by Gilham. It is hoped in a subsequent note to interpret the system geometrically.

Some time ago Besicovitch(l) gave an example of a linear Gδ-set E of Besicovitch dimension 1, with the property that E – A also has dimension 1, for each Fσ.-set A contained in E. This shows that an Fσ-set contained in E cannot be a very close approximation to E, but it leaves plenty of scope for Fσ-sets contained in E to be reasonably good approximations to E.
