In the construction of the seismological tables it has been found that the times of several pulses at a given distance show a well-marked maximum frequency for each, about which the bulk of the observations are spread with a standard deviation of 1·5−3 sec. For others there was only a vague concentration, spread over about half a minute (Jeffreys and Bullen, 1936–40). The theoretical times of the latter type could all be calculated from those of the former by using the principle of stationary time for small variations of the path, and the observed times might be either shorter or longer than the theoretical ones. There was a complete association between the type of distribution of the residuals and the nature of the path. Whenever the time as calculated was a minimum for all small variations of the path, the distribution of residuals was of the former type; when it was stationary without being either a true minimum or a maximum it was of the latter.

1. In this paper I consider various properties of the area of a surface including the relationship between Hausdorff measure and the Lebesgue area. The results here obtained will enable me, in a subsequent paper, to investigate the tangential properties of parametric surfaces. For simplicity of exposition I confine my attention to surfaces homoeomorphic to a disk, but the general case follows easily from cyclic element theory.

We compute the asymptotic behaviour of the number of partitions of large vectors (n1, n2) of ℤ+2 in the critical regime n1 ≍ √n2 and in the subcritical regime n1 = o(√n2). This work completes the results established in the fifties by Auluck, Nanda and Wright.

In this paper finite type invariants (also known as Vassiliev invariants) of pure braids are considered from a group-theoretic point of view. New results include a construction of a universal invariant with integer coefficients based on the Magnus expansion of a free group and a calculation of numbers of independent invariants of each type for all pure braid groups.

Let {Ln(x)} be the D transform of the Fourier series of f(x). If f(x) is a constant, it follows from (1) that, for all n, Ln(x) = f(x). However, it is often found that, roughly speaking, except in this trivial case, Ln(x) cannot tend to f(x) (in the topology given by the norm) with more than a certain degree of rapidity. This leads to the concept of ‘saturation’, which was first introduced by Favard (1) and Zamanski (8) and which has since been investigated by many authors (see (2), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7)). This is defined as follows.

In the present note we discuss some properties of a ‘measure of asymmetry’ of convex bodies in n-dimensional Euclidean space. Various measures of asymmetry have been treated in the literature (see, for example, (1), (6); references to most of the relevant results may be found in (4)). The measure introduced here has the somewhat surprising property that for n ≥ 3 the n-simplex is not the most asymmetric convex body in En. It seems to be the only measure of asymmetry for which this fact is known.

We prove that a weak equivalence between two cofibrant (colored) props in chain complexes induces a Dwyer–Kan equivalence between the simplicial localisations of the associated categories of algebras. This homotopy invariance under base change implies that the homotopy category of homotopy algebras over a prop P does not depend on the choice of a cofibrant resolution of P, and gives thus a coherence to the notion of algebra up to homotopy in this setting. The result is established more generally for algebras in combinatorial monoidal dg categories.

We define a new topos, the Herbrand topos, inspired by the modified realizability topos and our earlier work on Herbrand realizability. We also introduce the category of Herbrand assemblies and characterise these as the ¬¬-separated objects in the Herbrand topos. In addition, we show that the category of sets is included as the category of ¬¬-sheaves and prove that the inclusion functor preserves and reflects validity of first-order formulas.

When I was invited by Christ's College to deliver this year the Liversidge Lecture, it was indicated to me kindly but firmly that I was to talk about heavy hydrogen. I appreciate most deeply the honour you have done me by this invitation, especially by coupling my name (as it were) with this distinguished American newcomer to physical and chemical science. I cannot claim myself to be much more than an interested spectator of the rapid progress which has already been made in the study of this new substance, and the facts that I shall comment on (and the many others which time will force me to neglect) have been established by the collaboration of many workers—some of them our colleagues here, who would be much better qualified to speak at first hand about heavy hydrogen than I. Professor Liversidge laid it down in his deed of gift that his lecturer shall not deal with generalities or give a mere review of his subject, or give an instructional lecture suitable for undergraduates, but shall primarily try to encourage research and to stimulate himself and his audience to think, and to acquire new knowledge. In trying to fulfil his wish I shall not therefore catalogue all the new interesting properties of heavy hydrogen; this will mean, I fear, that I can make little or no further reference to its extremely exciting properties as an atomic projectile in disintegrating lithium and other nuclei, or to the equally exciting prospect that heavy water may have entirely distinct biological properties from ordinary water, being even lethal to many organisms, or to the wonderful possibilities of the new complex organic chemistry.

Numerical values of the above integral are given for 3/2λ√3 = 0(0·1)1, to six decimals for |ω| = 0(0·l)2·0(0·2)4·8 and to seven decimals for |ω| = 5(0·5)10(1)15.

The integral satisfies a third-order differential equation; this equation is integrated numerically for ω ≥ 0 and ω ≤ 0, and in each case the method of isolating the solution which satisfies f(ω) → 0 as ω → ∞ is described.

In two-dimensional knot theory, the relationship between surface-links and surface braids has been studied. A surface braid is described by a monodromy representation on a punctured disk which maps into the classical braid group. In this paper, we study a surface braid via a linear representation of the classical braid group and give a remarkable example of surface braids.

This paper shows that, given a finite subset $X$ of a finitely generated virtually free group $F$, the freeness of the subsemigroup of $F$ generated by $X$ can be tested algorithmically. (A group is virtually free if it contains a free subgroup of finite index.) It is then shown that every finitely generated subsemigroup of $F$ has a finite Malcev presentation (a type of semigroup presentation which can be used to define any semigroup that embeds in a group), and that such a presentation can be effectively found from any finite generating set.

An error in Dieudonné's paper, Sur les espaces de Köthe, published in Journal d' Analyse Mathématique, 1 (1951), 81–115, is pointed out and a correction put forward.

Let A be a *-algebra of operators on a Hilbert space H, and let Ah, A+ denote respectively the sets of self-adjoint and positive operators in A. A+ is a positive cone in Ah and it induces a partial ordering in Ah. The lattice properties of Ah were studied by R. Let $E(1)_K$ denote the homotopy rational elliptic surface corresponding to a knot $K$ in $S^3$ constructed by R. Fintushel and R. J. Stern. We construct an infinite family of homologous non-isotopic symplectic tori representing a primitive 2-dimensional homology class in $E(1)_K$ when $K$ is any nontrivial fibred knot in $S^3$. We also show how these tori can be non-isotopically embedded as homologous symplectic submanifolds in other symplectic 4-manifolds.

The Delaunay tessellation of a locally finite subset of the hyperbolic space ℍn is constructed via convex hulls in ℝn+1. For finite and lattice-invariant sets it is proven to be a polyhedral decomposition, and versions (necessarily modified from the Euclidean setting) of the empty circumspheres condition and geometric duality with the Voronoi tessellation are proved. Some pathological examples of infinite, non lattice-invariant sets are exhibited.
