The first lichen records from the Lakshadweep (Laccadive) Islands are presented.Lithothelium insulare (Pyrenulaceae) is described as new and nine other taxa are reported. The poor lichen flora, dominated by pantropical species, is probably a result of the lack of natural habitats in this area.

Biatora hertelii Printzen & Etayo and B. troendelagica Holien & Printzen are described as new to science. Diagnostic characters, systematic affinities, ecology and distribution of both species are briefly discussed. Divaricatic acid is reported for the first time from a species of Biatora

The new lichen species Cladonia krogiana is described from eight localities in SE Norway. It resembles C. polycarpoides morphologically, but differs in containing barbaric acid and chlorovinetorin.

Aspicilia excavata Thor & Timdal sp. nov. is described and reported from Austria, Finland, Norway and Sweden. It is usually sterile and mainly characterized by an indeterminate thallus composed of small, white pruinose squamules excavated from the margin by dark brown to black soralia. The species grows on calcareous rocks and mortar, mainly on steep to overhanging faces.

The crustose lichen genus Maronea A. Massal (Fuscideaceae) comprises about 12 species worldwide (Kantvilas 2001, 2004). The easily recognized, diagnostic features of this group of lichens are the lecanorine apothecia, Teloschistes-type ascus, and numerous spores per ascus, and these have contributed to a very stable generic concept over the years. As in many genera of lichenized fungi, however, differing species concepts have led to confusion over how many taxa are recognized. Many species, and varieties and forms of Maronea that were described on the basis of minor morphological features have since been synonymized (e.g. Harris 2006; Magnusson 1934).

Calopadia saxicola is described as new to science. The species grows on rocky shores in southern Brazil and is characterized by the corticate thallus, pruinose apothecia with brownish to reddish brown disc, mainly 2–3-spored asci with muriform ascospores, and the absence of secondary metabolites. A description with ecological data, figures, comments and a key to all species in the genus known from Brazil are given.

The new genus Sinuicella, an early successional lichen, was found on bare soil in Oregon, USA. The thallus is minute fruticose, grey to nearly black, branching isotomic dichotomous, branches round, 20–90 μm wide in water mount. The cortex is composed of interlocking cells shaped like jigsaw puzzle pieces. Spores are hyaline, 1-septate, 25–40(–50) × 6.5–9(–11) μm. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses on multilocus data sets, first spanning the entire order Peltigerales and then restricted to Peltigeraceae with extended sampling from Solorina and Peltigera, revealed the placement of Sinuicella outside of currently recognized genera, sister to Peltigera, with high support. Based on the phylogenetic, morphological and ecological distinctness of Sinuicella, we formally introduce a new genus represented by the single species S. denisonii. The cyanobiont of S. denisonii is Nostoc from phylogroup XL, Clade 2, Subclade 3 based on the rbcLX marker.

The genus Caloplaca is taxonomically difficult. Many species are characterized by a combination of morphological traits, and there are only a few useful microscopic characters. The secondary chemistry is rather uniform and of little taxonomic value, notwithstanding the usually bright pigmentation.

As part of a revision of the genus Acanthothecis s. lat. (Graphidaceae) in Brazil, an updated world key to the known species of the genus is presented. From Brazil, the following ten new species are described: A. latispora, with single-spored asci, large, muriform ascospores, and norstictic and stictic acids; A. megalospora, with single-spored asci, very large, transversely septate ascospores, and norstictic and protocetraric acids; A. multiseptata, with 8-spored asci, medium-sized and narrow, transversely multiseptate ascospores, and lacking secondary substances except terpenoids; A. norstictica, with 1–2-spored asci, large, muriform ascospores, and norstictic acid; A. oryzoides, with 8-spored asci, medium-sized, transversely septate ascospores, and norstictic acid; A. rimosa, with 2-spored asci, small to medium-sized, muriform ascospores, and stictic acid; A. roseola, with 1–2-spored asci, large, muriform ascospores, and norstictic, stictic and subnorstictic acids; A. saxicola, with 8-spored asci, small, 3-septate ascospores, and norstictic acid; A. subfarinosa, with 8-spored asci, small, 6–8-septate ascospores, and norstictic acid; and A. submuriformis, with 8-spored asci, small, submuriform ascospores, and lichexanthone. In addition, three further species are formally validated, namely A. bicellulata, A. farinosa and A. subabaphoides, and the new combination A. bicellularis is proposed, based on Acanthotrema bicellularis.

Elixia cretica T. Sprib. & Lumbsch is described as a new species from the mountains of western Crete. The second member of the previously monotypic genus and only the third member of the family Elixiaceae, it is distinguished by its surficial thallus, larger ascospores and corticolous habit. Molecular phylogenetic analysis based on a sequence of mitochondrial small subunit DNA confirms the position of the new species. We also report E. flexella from New Hampshire (USA) as new to eastern North America.

The principal goal of our study was to test whether ecologically and chemically different populations of lichens in the Physconia muscigena group belong to a single, or multiple, species. We used sequence data from three markers (ITS rDNA, mtSSU rDNA and TEF1-α) for the reconstruction of phylogenetic trees based on a sampling of mostly European and Canadian populations of P. muscigena (Ach.) Poelt, P. muscigena var. bayeri (Nádv.) Poelt and P. isidiomuscigena Essl. In addition, we sought any possible geographical or ecological trends among chemotypes and haplotypes. Results show that: 1) sequence data of ITS rDNA and TEF1-α show large genetic variation in the Physconia muscigena group, which does not correlate with geographical distribution or thallus chemistry; 2) Physconia muscigena var. bayeri and P. isidiomuscigena appear undifferentiated with P. muscigena in our phylogenetic trees, and the three species cannot be distinguished on the basis of ITS rDNA, mtSSU rDNA and TEF1-α sequences. We therefore synonymized Physconia muscigena var. bayeri with P. muscigena and we recombine P. isidiomuscigena as a variety of P. muscigena.

This study investigated the molecular, chemical and morphological variation in the Usnea pectinata aggregate using 42 specimens, 22 from Tanzania and 20 from São Tomé and Príncipe. A total of 31 sequences (13 ITS, 13 nuLSU and 5 RPB1) were generated. The results are presented in two phylogenies: first a three-markers ‘backbone’ phylogeny for the U. pectinata aggregate, where six distinct, strongly supported subclades indicate considerable genetic variation in the dataset; and second, an ITS phylogeny with 47 terminals along with a mapping of morphological and chemistry data. Several well-supported monophyletic clades were recovered in both phylogenies and these may well represent separate species in the complex referred to here as the U. pectinata aggregate. Three morphotypes characterized by axis pigmentation and four by branch shape were noted. Six chemotypes were observed.
