The formation of collisionless electrostatic shock (CES) and ion acceleration in thin foils irradiated by intense laser pulse is investigated using particle-in-cell simulation. The CES can appear in the expanding plasma behind the foil when self-induced transparency occurs. The transmitting laser pulse can expel target-interior electrons, in addition to the electrons from the front target surface. The additional hot electrons lead to an enhanced and spatially-extended sheath field behind the foil. As the CES propagates in the plasma, it also continuously forward-reflects many of the upstream ions to higher energies. The latter ions are further accelerated by the enhanced sheath field and can overtake and shield the target-normal sheath accelerated ions. The energy gain of the CES accelerated ions can thus be considerably higher than that of the latter.

The present paper presents experimental results of the transverse and longitudinal phase volume for the expanding multicharged ions in laser produced plasma, created by focusing a CO2-laser (beam) onto a Pb207 target. The total number of Pb207 ions (with Z = 1 or 2 and Z = 6), the ion current duration and amplitude at a distance of 1 m from the laser target within 10−2 steradians are determined. The measured experimental parameters of the laser heavy ion source are compared with the driver requirement for the heavy ion inertial fusion (HIIF) programme.

The phenomena observed in the experiment confirm the results of numerical calculations using a two temperature hydrodynamic programme.

Proximity wall stabilized, fast (>4 × 1011 A/s), high current (>40 kA) discharges are capable to create long, dense, hot, stable, non-equilibrium plasma column, suitable e.g., for radiation amplification or even for lasing in extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray region. Exploding wire in water resembles a metal-vapor-filled capillary with liquid, ever fresh wall (without any metallic deposit). Modeling of wire explosion (inclusive melting and boiling phase transitions, thermal diffusion, and variable conductivity) by the originally skinned driving current is described. Modeling results are compared with measurement of the discharge current and with side-on and end-on monitoring of H-alpha line emission. Analysis of H-alpha line profile is used for diagnostic of water-vapor layer around the wire. The differences between model and reality are attributed to the fact that the pressure dependence of material constants was neglected in the first approximation.

A scheme is proposed for the acceleration of electrons generated during the ionization of a gas by two laser pulses. The electrons created from the ionization of neutral atoms near the rising edge of the pulse do not gain sufficient energy. If a prepulse is used before the main pulse then the prepulse removes electrons from the outer shells, and the main laser pulse interacts with the electrons in the inner shells of high atomic number gases, such as krypton and argon. The electrons are generated close to the peak of the main laser pulse and gain energy in GeV with a small spread in the energy and low emittance angle.

Generation and evolution of plasma during femtosecond laser ablation of silicon are studied by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy in air, N2, SF6, and under vacuum. The plasma is generated faster than 200 ps (time resolution of our experiment) after excitation and mainly contains atoms and monovalent ions of silicon. Time-resolved spectra prove that silicon ions are faster than the silicon atoms which may be attributed to Coulomb repulsion and a local electric field when they are ejected from the silicon surface. During plasma evolution, ambient gas causes a confinement effect that enhances the dissociation of ambient gas molecules and the re-deposition of the removed material and leads to higher intensity and longer lifetime of the emission spectra. In SF6, a chemical reaction increases the plasma density and weakens the re-deposition effect. The different processes during plasma evolution strongly influence microstructure formation.

Ion acceleration by short, high intensity laser pulses in sets of small targets is treated by an analytical model developed here, and by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. When an intense short laser pulse illuminates a thin foil target at normal incidence, electrons in the target are accelerated by the ponderomotive force. At the rear surface of the foil they generate a strong electric field that accelerates the ions, and generates an ion beam of small divergence. Using a mass-limited small target like a droplet enhances the ion energy, but increases divergence at the same time. In this paper, a combination of several-micron targets in a periodic structure (for example, a droplet chain) is proposed in order to increase the conversion efficiency from the incident laser beam to the emergent protons. Improvement of the energy flux conversion efficiency from the laser to the ion beam at optimal conditions is demonstrated.

Our recent experimental results demonstrate that the formation of plasma jets is a fundamental process accompanying the laser produced plasma expansion, if a massive planar target with relatively high atomic number is irradiated by a defocused laser beam. In this paper some new results on the influence of target irradiation conditions on plasma jet parameters are presented. The experiment was carried out at the PALS iodine laser facility, with the third harmonic beam of the pulse duration of 250 ps (FWHM). The beam energies varied in the range of 13–160 J, the focal spot radii in the range of 35–600 µm. The planar massive targets used in the experiment were made of Cu, Ag and Ta. For measurements of the electron density evolution a three frame interferometric system was employed. The jets were observed in the whole range of the laser energy used. The initial velocities of the plasma jets produced in the reported experiment reached the value of up to 7·107 cm/s, the jets were up to 4 mm long including the jet pedestal and about 400 µm in diameter. Calculations of the efficiency of the plasma jet production show that it decreases with increasing the laser energy.

A new efficient injection method from a laser ion source to a Radio Frequency Quadropole (RFQ) was proposed and is being tested in RIKEN, Japan. A laser plasma is induced just before the entrance of the RFQ and is injected directly into the RFQ channel. Using an existing RFQ, first verification tests have been completed successfully. Finally, the preliminary specifications for the first RFQ dedicated to the new injection scheme are presented.

Thermonuclear ignition and burn propagation in pre-compressed cylindrical deuterium-tritium (DT) targets is studied by two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations using the code MULTI-2D. Special attention is paid to self-sustained steady burn wave propagation. Peak temperatures and burn wave velocity scale with the density-radius product of the fuel, and wave propagation is obtained for (ρR)DT ≥ 0.45 g/cm2. Radiation transport is identified as the dominant mechanism to drive the wave. Details of ignition by a heavy ion beam pulse are also presented. Limitations in the physics basis of the simulations are pointed out. The results are compared with previous publications found in the literature.

A one-dimensional model is used to study the hydrodynamic response of thin foils to bombardment by an intense proton beam. The beam targets are single- and multilayer planar foils of gold and polystyrene. The main conclusion of the study is that the efficiency of conversion of incident beam energy to directed kinetic energy of the target is maximized by using a multilayer design. For beam parameters associated with the Gamble II device at the Naval Research Laboratory, the simulations yield payload velocities of over 5 cm/μs and energy conversion efficiencies of over 30%. We discus the implications of these results for inertial confinement fusion research.

Automated three-channel polari-interferometer measurements of electron density distributions and magnetic fields in a laser plasma are presented. Each of the polari-interferometer channels, interferometric, Faraday, and “tenebral” (shadow), has been equipped with a CCD camera with the matrix (512 × 512). With special software for each of the channels, not only the distribution of the electron density on the basis of interferograms is obtained, but also the distributions of magnetic fields in plasma using the information from the Faraday and shadow images. The results of testing investigations obtained in the plasma experiment are the main part of this work.

The frequency-doubling efficiency and resultant focal spot quality of a large aperture (140 × 89 mm) subpicosecond, chirped pulse amplified (CPA) 1054-nm beam for laser–matter interaction studies has been investigated using the Vulcan Nd:glass laser system (Danson et al. 1998). The effect of B-integral on the CPA beam quality was studied and is shown not to be the dominant cause of the observed frequency-doubled beam break-up. Conversion efficiency tests were carried out on small aperture KDP (type 1) crystals at a range of incident intensities up to 3 × 1011 W/cm2 giving the optimum crystal thickness for pulses in the 0.3–3 ps region. A large-aperture frequency-doubled beam was commissioned and delivered pulses of over 10 TW onto target for an electron acceleration experiment.

Experiments to study the light emission from plasma produced by particle beams are presented. Fundamental aspects in comparison with discharge plasma formation are discussed. It is shown that the formation of excimer molecules is an important process. This paper summarizes various studies of particle beam induced light emission and presents the first results of a direct comparison of light emission induced by electron- and ion beam excitation. Both high energy heavy ion beam and low energy electron beam experiments are described and an overview over applications in the form of light sources, lasers, and ionization devices is given.

Magnetic confinement fusion (MCF) and inertial confinement fusion (ICF) are critically contrasted in the context of far-distant travels throughout solar system. Both are shown to potentially display superior capabilities for vessel maneuvering at high speed, which are unmatched by standard cryogenic propulsion (SCP). Costs constraints seem less demanding than for ground-based power plants. Main issue is the highly problematic takeoff from earth, in view of safety hazards concomitant to radioactive spills in case of emergency. So, it is recommended to assemble the given powered vessel at high earth altitude ∼ 700 km, above upper atmosphere. Fusion propulsion is also compared to fission powered one, which secures a factor of two improvement over SCP. As far a specific impulse (s) is considered, one expects 500–3000 from fission and as much as 104–105 from fusion through deuterium–tritium (D-T). Next, we turn attention to the most performing fusion reaction, i.e., proton–antiproton annihilation with specific impulse ∼ 103–106 and thrust–to–weight ratio ∼ 10−3–1. Production and costs are timely reviewed. The latter could drop by four orders of magnitude, which is possible with successful MCF or ICF. Appropriate vessel designs will be presented for fusion as well as for antimatter propulsion. In particular, ion compressed antimatter nuclear II (ICAN-II) project to Mars in 30 days with fusion catalyzed by 140 ng of antiprotons will be detailed (specific impulse ∼ 13500 s).

K-shell emission from copper target was observed by focusing femtosecond laser pulses very close to the target surface-air interface. It was shown that mechanism of X-ray emission is connected with generation of fast electrons in the air plasma area. Experiments demonstrated that moderate intensity of laser radiation (IL < 1015 W/cm2) was enough to produce considerable flux of X-ray photons of at least 10 keV energy. The parameters of generated X-ray emission were studied. It was found that after propagation through 40 cm thick air layer X-ray spectra consisted of pronounced Kα and Kβ characteristic lines and relatively small Bremsstrahlung continuum. Since transversal source size has an order of a few tens of micrometers, such a source can be used for absorption imaging of micro-objects in standard laboratory conditions. That can be particularly important for diagnostic of medical and biological samples in vivo.

We present recent evolutions of the detailed opacity code SCO-RCG which combines statistical modelings of levels and lines with fine-structure calculations. The code now includes the Partially Resolved Transition Array model, which allows one to replace a complex transition array by a small-scale detailed calculation preserving energy and variance of the genuine transition array and yielding improved higher-order moments. An approximate method for studying the impact of strong magnetic field on opacity and emissivity was also recently implemented. The Zeeman line profile is modeled by fourth-order Gram-Charlier expansion series, which is a Gaussian multiplied by a linear combination of Hermite polynomials. Electron collisional line broadening is often modeled by a Lorentzian function and one has to calculate the convolution of a Lorentzian with Gram-Charlier distribution for a huge number of spectral lines. Since the numerical cost of the direct convolution would be prohibitive, we propose, to obtain the resulting profile, a fast and precise algorithm, relying on a representation of the Gaussian by cubic splines.

The effect of a variable magnetic field on Li plasma produced by laser-blow-off technique has been studied experimentally. Enhancement in the intensity of the spectral lines from neutrals was observed, which varied with the magnetic field. The enhancement in emission from Li I was found to differ for the two different transitions viz. 670.8 nm (2s 2S1/2 ← 2p 2P3/2,1/2) and 610.3 nm (2p 2P1/2,3/2 ← 3d 2P3/2,5/2), which is more prominent for 670.8 nm. Conventionally, the enhancement in emission in the presence of the magnetic field has been explained in terms of radiative recombination. However, the atomic analysis by computing photon emissivity coefficients in the present case has revealed for the first time that it is due to electron impact excitation.

Proton-boron fusion would offer considerable advantages for the purpose of energy production as the reaction is aneutronic and does not involve radioactive species. Its exploitation, however, appears to be particularly challenging due to the low reactivity of the H-11B fuel at temperatures up to 100 keV. Fusion chain-reaction concepts have been proposed as possible means to overcome this limitation. Relevant findings are reviewed in this article. Energy-amplification processes are also presented, which are of interest for beam-fusion experiments and fast ignition of H-11B fuel. Directions for further work are outlined as well.

A Nd:YAG laser oscillator Q-switched and mode locked via a nonlinear mirror based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and aided by an acousto optical modulator (AOM) has been realised. A rate equation model and a round trip model are used to describe the longitudinal mode dynamics. Parameter variations of the nonlinear SBS mirror and the loss modulating AOM in the resonator are investigated with regard to their effect on the pulse duration and spectra of the pulses.

The emission of high-energy protons in laser–solid interactions and the theories that have been used to explain it are briefly reviewed. To these theories we add a further possibility: the acceleration of protons inside the target by the electric field generated by fast electrons. This is considered using a simple one-dimensional model. It is found that for relativistic laser intensities and sufficiently long pulse durations, the proton energy gain is typically several times the fast electron temperature. The results are very similar to those obtained for proton acceleration by electron expansion into vacuum.
