High dynamic range, space-resolved X-ray spectra of an aluminum laser–plasma in the 5.5–8 Å range were obtained using a TlAP crystal and a cooled CCD camera as a detector. This technique was used to investigate the emission region in the longitudinal direction over a distance of approximately 350 μm from the solid target surface. These data show that the electron density profile varies by two orders of magnitude with the temperature ranging from about 180 eV in the overdense region to about 650 eV in the underdense region. Accordingly, different equilibria take place across the explored region which can be identified with this experimental technique. Detailed studies on highly ionized atomic species in different plasma conditions can therefore be performed simultaneously under controlled conditions.

High-sensitivity interferometry measurements of initial density distributions are reviewed for a wide range of gas-puff nozzles used in plasma radiation source (PRS) z-pinch experiments. Accurate gas distributions are required for determining experimental load parameters, modeling implosion dynamics, understanding the radiation properties of the stagnated pinch, and for predicting PRS performance in future experiments. For a number of these nozzles, a simple ballistic-gas-flow model (BFM) has been used to provide good physics-based analytic fits to the measured r, z density distributions. These BFM fits provide a convenient means to smoothly interpolate radial density distributions between discrete axial measurement locations for finer-zoned two-dimensional MHD calculations, and can be used to determine how changes in nozzle parameters and load geometry might alter implosion dynamics and radiation performance. These measurement and analysis techniques are demonstrated for a nested-shell nozzle used in Double Eagle and Saturn experiments. For this nozzle, the analysis suggests load modifications that may increase the K-shell yield.

We present a theoretical approach to the thermodynamic properties of nonideal plasmas consisting of neutral atoms, multiply charged ions, and free electrons. Starting with the free energy, we describe the ionization equilibrium of this system by a coupled set of mass action laws (Saha equations). Our model of interaction takes into account Coulomb forces between all charged particles and hard-core forces between all heavy particles and the electrons. The influence of multiple ionization and different interaction parts on plasma composition, mean charge, and equation of state is discussed for xenon. Finally, we show the potential occurrence of the plasma phase transition.

Controlled fusion energy from burning hydrogen with boron-11 is of interest because no neutrons are produced. Following the scheme of ignition by spherical irradiation by laser or particle beams, one has to deal with exorbitant conditions of densities and input energies. A new approach following the scheme of block ignition with laser pulses of picosecond (ps) duration and more than petawatt (PW) power led to the possibility of plane geometry irradiation of the fuel using the anomalous effect of block ignition for deuterium tritium (DT) based on updated conditions for the initial computations. We present the extension for H-11B resulting in a very less dramatic difference to DT than in the case of spherical pellet geometry. Ignition thresholds may be only about one order of magnitude higher and the needed temperatures of about 50 keV are no problem for the skin layer acceleration by nonlinear forces (SLANF) for the block generation.

A high brightness laser-plasma X-ray source has been set-up and is presently available at IFAM. A wide range of diagnostics has been set up to monitor the properties of the X-ray radiation and to control the main parameters including photon energy, flux intensity, and pulse duration. A beam extractor enables access to the X-ray radiation at atmospheric pressure. A simple, easy-to-use projection microscope has been built which is capable of single-shot micron resolution imaging with digital acquisition. Preliminary biomedical experiments show that the X-ray doses available on a single laser shot exposure of our source fully meet the conditions required for an important class of biological experiments based on X-ray induced DNA damage providing an ideal alternative to the long time exposures needed with X-ray tubes.

An experimental study on the angular distribution and conversion of multi-keV X-ray sources produced from 2 ns-duration 527nm laser irradiated thick-foil targets on Shenguang II laser facility (SG-II) is reported. The angular distributions measured in front of the targets can be fitted with the function of f(θ) = α+ (1−α)cosβθ (θ is the viewing angle relative to the target normal), where α = 0.41 ± 0.014, β = 0.77 ± 0.04 for Ti K-shell X-ray sources (~4.75 keV for Ti K-shell), and α = 0.085 ± 0.06, β = 0.59 ± 0.07 for Ag/Pd/Mo L-shell X-ray sources (2–2.8 keV for Mo L-shell, 2.8–3.5 keV for Pd L-shell, and 3–3.8 keV for Ag L-shell). The isotropy of the angular distribution of L-shell emission is worse than that of the K-shell emission at larger viewing angle (>70°), due to its larger optical depth (stronger self-absorption) in the cold plasma side lobe surrounding the central emission region, and in the central hot plasma region (emission region). There is no observable difference in the angular distributions of the L-shell X-ray emission among Ag, Pd, and Mo. The conversion efficiency of Ag/Pd/Mo L-shell X-ray sources is higher than that of the Ti K-shell X-ray sources, but the gain relative to the K-shell emission is not as high as that by using short pulse lasers. The conversion efficiency of the L-shell X-ray sources decreases with increasing atomic numbers (or X-ray photon energy), similar to the behavior of the K-shell X-ray source.

Research results of luminescence spectra of noble gases and Ar–Xe, Ar–Kr, and Kr–Xe mixtures under the excitation by products of nuclear reaction in the core of a stationary nuclear reactor with 0.87 × 1014 n/cm2s thermal neutron flux are described in the article. The emission spectra of noble gases are similar to the obtained spectrum under the excitation by the 40Ar+7 ion beam from the DC-60 accelerator. Bands in spectra of the binary mixtures of noble gases are connected with the radiation on heteronuclear ion molecule transitions. The appearance of the lines of alkali metal atoms at the temperature increase of gas chamber is explained by sputtering of the lithium layer via nuclear reaction products as well as ionized and excited particles of the buffer gas.

An anomalously strong increase of nuclear fusion gains for laser driven compression and thermal ignition of hydrogen-boron11 has been discovered from computations by using the latest results of Newins and Swain about details of a resonance maximum of the astrophysical S-function at 148 keV for the reaction cross-sections. Extensive computations based on volume ignition showed some usual improvements of the fusion gains. However, for a very narrow range of parameters, the increase of the gain was found to be higher by more than a factor 6. This is very unusual in all similar computations and is related to retrograde properties which were known for other parameter values. On top it is most important that the anomalous range is in the practically very interesting range for incorporation of laser pulse energies of few megajoules. The gains of up to 20 may be of interest for power generation in future by the high density fusion scheme.

300 keV electron beams with energy peaked in the range 280–390 keV were generated by focusing a high contrast ratio but temporally double pulsed 800 nm ultrafast laser onto a flowing water jet under both helium atmosphere at ambient pressure and water aspirator vacuum conditions, using laser intensities in the range 1015–1018 Wcm−2. Their characteristics have been investigated as functions of inter-pulse delay, incidence geometry and laser pulse chirp. Shot-to-shot variation of the beams' equatorial and azimuthal distributions was also recorded in real time. Measurements of the emitted charge and energy have been performed. Secondary X-ray emission arising from impingement of the electron beams on the target chamber walls and other parts of the apparatus have been identified. Preliminary results after transition to a high repetition rate laser system have shown similar behavior. Approaches for improvements and applications are suggested.

High gain free electron laser devices, operating in the self amplified spontaneous emission regime, are under construction and was designed as the next generation of synchrotron radiation sources. In this paper we discuss the relevant physical aspects and derive simple relations for laser and higher order harmonic power, which can usefully be exploited in the preliminary design of these sources

This work describes an inductive energy storage scheme intended for power multiplication at mega-Ampere currents. The key power multiplication element of the scheme is an opening switch generating the voltage of inductive origin. The switch represents an additional volume with magnetically accelerated solid-state or plasma conductor between the generator and the load. Motion of the conductor increases the inductance of the volume. A sufficiently fast increase of this inductance at the end of magnetic energy storage time ensures power multiplication. A critical requirement for the accelerated conductor is the possibility of temporal profiling of the inductance increase. A proof-of-principle experiment at GIT12 shows that such profiling is possible. We suggest a simple analysis of the scheme efficiency and illustrate this analysis for a multi-mega-Ampere class generator. The scheme is alternative to existing inductive energy storage technologies for pulsed-power conditioning at high currents.

This paper discusses the general requirements for inertial confinement fusion, technology requirements and choices, overall efficiencies, and laser system costs for scaling krypton fluoride amplifiers to high energy, and describes the design of a 100 kilojoule double-pass KrF power amplifier.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) in different multimode glass fibers with a core diameter of 200 μm are determined. Antireflective coatings for fiber end-faces with high LIDT are developed, which enhance the SBS reflectivity and reduce unwanted front-face reflections. The morphology of pump- and Stokes-radiation induced damages is investigated using atomic force microscopy.

The remaining challenges, confronting high-power microwave sources and pulsed power technology, stimulate the development of robust relativistic electron beam sources. This paper presents a carbon-fiber-aluminum cathode with high-density uniform emitters, which was tested in a single pulsed power generator (~450 kV, ~350 ns, ~50 Ω) and a repetitive one (350 kV, <10 ns, 150 Ω, and 100 Hz). The distribution and development of the cathode plasma was observed by time-and-space resolved diagnostics, and the uniformity of electron beam density was checked by taking x-ray images. A quasi-stationary behavior of the cathode plasma expansion was observed. It was found that the uniformity of the extracted electron beam is satisfactory in spite of individual plasma jets on the cathode surface. Under repetitively pulsed operation, this cathode exhibited a good shot-to-shot reproducibility even in poor vacuum. This new class of plasma cathodes offers a promising prospect of developing relativistic electron beam sources.

Laser-induced fusion in ultra-dense deuterium D(-1) is reported in several studies from our group, using ns- and ps-pulsed lasers. The ejection of ultra-dense hydrogen particles with thermal distributions and energy up to 20 MeV u−1 was studied previously by time-of-flight measurements. The investigations of the new processes continue now by studying the interaction of these particles with metal surfaces. In the present experiments, such particles penetrate in two steps through 1 mm of metal and reach three levels of collectors at distances up to 1 m. Only the fastest particles penetrate and move to the next level. The thermal time-of-flight distributions together with tests with strong magnetic fields exclude electrons as the particles observed. The sign of the signals to the metal collectors depends on the bias (negative bias gives positive signal and conversely) while the time variations of the signals for positive and negative bias are similar. The rapid variation of the signals indicates electrons and positrons ejected from the collectors, thus lepton-pair production. An increase in bias up to ± 400 V increases the peak signal up to 1 A with no observed limiting. A thick metal plate removes slow particles and most gamma photons. The number of lepton-pairs produced is > 4 × 1012 sr−1 in the forward direction per laser shot.

This paper will present a novel genetic-algorithm-based code (GASPED), developed for the analysis of fine features (e.g., satellite structure and line shifts) in X-ray spectra emitted by hot dense plasmas. The problem dependent modification of standard genetic-algorithm concepts allows efficient decomposition of spectra in concrete physical terms, such as resonance and intercombination lines, dielectronic satellites, or prospective nuclear transitions. Two examples of the code application demonstrate the proposed approach. High resolution K-shell spectra emitted from He- and Li-like Al ions immersed in dense, constrained-flow plasma are decomposed into individual pseudo-Voigt components, by using anticipatory theoretical knowledge of the satellite structure simulated by the multilevel collisional-radiative code (MARIA). Line shifts of the He-like resonance and intercombination line are deduced assuming the aggregate plasma-induced shifts of the parent lines and their satellites. The trend in the frequency shifts observed as a function of the variable plasma parameters qualitatively follows the theoretical predictions. The found variations of the exchange energy between the singlet and triplet levels provide a new impact for the line shift theories. The second example concerns the search for low-lying nuclear transitions in hot dense laser-produced plasmas. The spectra of highly ionized Ta are decomposed by combining the GASPED code with results of ab initio atomic data calculations performed by the RELAC code. Upper limits for observation of the controversial radiative decay of Ta nuclei at 6.238 eV are estimated.

Recent particle-in-cell simulations of the stimulated Brillouin backscattering (SBBS) of electromagnetic radiation have shown that even at sub-relativistic intensities (Iλ2 = 1016 Wμm2/cm2) non-drifting solitary waves, “solitons” for short, are easily produced, and remain almost unchanged all along the simulation time, typically for several thousands of optical cycles. They appear in the form of stable local concentrations of electromagnetic radiation trapped inside quasi-neutral density holes. The plasma density inhomogeneity associated with their presence disrupts the resonant SBBS amplification. The cavitation process is accompanied by strong electron and ion heating. The physical characteristics of such solitons are discussed and they are compared with the theoretical predictions of an analytical model for localized solution of the Maxwell equations in warm plasma.

In the first part, the theoretical model of the stochastic heating effect is presented briefly. Then, a numerical resolution of the Hamilton equations highlights the threshold of the stochastic effect. Finally, Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code simulations results, for experimentally relevant parameters, are presented in order to confirm the acceleration mechanism predicted by the one-particle theoretical model. This paper gives the conditions on the different experimental parameters in order to have an optimization of the stochastic heating.

Coaxial relativistic backward wave oscillator with the rippled inner conductor not only increases the output efficiency but also results in the serious phenomenon of pulse shortening in experiments. Our research indicates that the two main mechanisms leading to the pulse shortening are the electron beam interruption and combining effects of the explosive field electron emission and the secondary electron multipactor on the surface of the slow-wave structure. In order to enhance its power capacity the electrodynamic structure is modified by detailed analysis of the field distribution in the coaxial slow-wave structure. The appropriate resonant reflector and the electron collector are developed for the application of the coaxial relativistic backward wave oscillator. A series of surface treatment is applied to enhance the power capacity of the coaxial RBWO. In the experiment, the microwave pulse duration is increased from less than 10 ns to 20 ns, and the output efficiency is enhanced from less than 20% to 34% employing the electron beam pulse of the full width at half maximum 28 ns. The peak power of 1.01 GW at the frequency of 7.4 GHz is achieved. It is found that the output efficiency of the coaxial RBWO is likely to be advanced if its power capacity can be boosted further.

In this work, plasma is produced by irradiating a Ti target with 10 ns pulsed Nd:YAG (λ = 1064 nm) laser. The laser fluence at the target was varied in the range of 2–20.3 J/cm2. The ion signal from freely expanding Ti plasma in vacuum was characterized with the help of ion collector and time-of-flight electrostatic energy analyzer. The ion charge state was found to increase with the laser fluence and maximum available ion charge in this fluence range is Ti4+. A correlation between the intensities of various ion charge states was observed, which indicates that higher charge states are most probably produced through stepwise ionization mechanism. It is also observed that charge state distribution of plasma can be controlled by variation of the laser fluence. In addition, energy distribution of ion charge states Tin+ (n = 1–4) is measured by varying back plate voltage of the electrostatic energy analyzer for a fixed laser fluence of 20.3 J/cm2. Ions energy distributions were in the range of 0.36–3.0 keV and the most probable ion energy was found to increase linearly with ion charge state. The estimated equivalent potential at the laser fluence of 20.3 J/cm2 is about 310 V. These results are in good agreement with the predictions of electrostatic model of ion acceleration in laser plasma.
