The Web search has special characteristics against the desktop search when realized from mobile devices. To establish an improvement within this paradigm, an option is to take into account the context from which the search is developed. To conceptualize the mobile context, we propose the use of ontologies, which will include the device characteristics, environmental conditions and user preferences, among other term conceptualizations. This context definition would be used to determinate the behavior of a word recommendation when searching from mobile devices. As an essential process of creating this context ontology, we have made a real user's evaluation of the ontology terms by means of a survey. This paper shows a brief introduction to the project and focuses mainly on the results obtained in this concept's evaluation.

The design and assessment of safety critical systems often involves broad and distributed teams of designers, suppliers and analysts who represent diverse areas of expertise and motivations. Accurate and effective communication between these groups is therefore an issue of primary importance. The formalisation of specifications and arguments of safety can be of significant benefit in ensuring the consistency of evidence in such cases, when it must be presented across many domains. However, a formal description of a safety critical system may be unconvincing unless it is presented in a form which is (or forms which are) accessible to the broad range of users and assessors of safety cases. This raises issues of human communication which include the tailoring of information to particular communicative tasks; the efficacy of differing media for communication and the cognitive impact that such differing media have. This paper draws together work in fields of knowledge engineering, knowledge based systems and human communication in an effort to address, from a sound theoretical basis, these and other communication issues raised by the use of formal descriptions in safety critical systems. Further, this paper argues that a primary role for knowledge based systems techniques in safety critical systems is in supporting the communication of information.

We propose an approach to knowledge-based decision-model construction. The domain knowledge is represented in the form of multilevel influence diagrams. At each level, a regular influence diagram representing a decision model may be generated and the influence diagrams between the levels are related through a series of operations. We defined eight such operations and show that these are sufficient at the structural level to construct any target influence diagram in any practical situation. We provide a series of examples drawn from different domains on the use of multilevel influence diagrams for model construction. We also propose suggestions on providing users with guidance that can direct the model-construction procedure towards the best target model.

Traditional Route Search aims at finding the path that goes through geographical entities that are relevant to the provided search terms from the start point to the end point. Without constraints, traditional Route Search visiting multiple locations is unreliable because locations may close after a specified time. In this paper, time constraint (operating hours of each location) is drawn into Route Search query in order to make the query more realistic. Two methods are proposed in this paper, namely Route Search for fixed locations (RFix) and Route Search for flexible locations (RFlex). These two queries are different from the existing Route Search query because (1) the end point is not pre-defined and (2) time constraint is involved. Our two proposal queries consider whether the locations are specifically pre-defined by the user or only the location types are specified. In each method, two propositions are presented for pruning expansion branches, which highly improves the performance. Our experiments verified the applicability of RFix and RFlex to solve Route Search queries with time constraint queries.

Research on preferences has significantly increased in recent years, as it involves not only many subproblems to be investigated, such as elicitation, representation, and reasoning, but has also been the target of different research areas, for example, artificial intelligence and databases. In particular, much work has focused on qualitative preferences, because these are closer to the way people express their preferences in comparison with quantitative preferences. Against this background, a large number of approaches have been proposed, associated with heterogeneous areas, so that these approaches are usually just compared with those of the same area. In response, we present in this paper a survey of approaches to qualitative multi-attribute preference reasoning, covering different research areas. We introduce selected approaches that propose different techniques and algorithms, which take as input qualitative multi-attribute preference statements following a particular structure specified by the approach. We analyse each approach in a systematic way and discuss their commonalities and limitations.

Intelligent computing in large-scale systems provides systematic methodologies and tools for building complex inferential systems, which are able to adapt, mine data sets, evolve, and act in a nimble manner within major distributed environments with diverse architectures featuring multiple cores, accelerators, and high-speed networks.

We believe that the papers presented in this special issue ought to serve as a reference for students, researchers, and industry practitioners interested in the evolving, interdisciplinary area of intelligent computing in large-scale systems. We very much hope that readers will find in this compendium new inspiration and ideas to enhance their own research.

This paper presents a new ‘Language Independent Recommender Agent’ (LIRA), using information distributed over any text-source pair on the Web about candidate items. While existing review-based recommendation systems learn the features of candidate items and users’ preferences, they do not handle varying perspectives of users on those features. LIRA constructs agents for each user, which run regression algorithms on texts from different sources and builds trust relations. The key advantages of LIRA can be listed as: LIRA does not require reviews from target users, LIRA calculates trust values based on prediction accuracy instead of social connections or rating similarity, LIRA does not require the reviews to come from the same community or peer user group. Since ratings of the reviewers are not necessary for LIRA, we can collect and use reviews from different sources (web pages, professional critiques), as long as we know the corresponding item and source of that text. Since LIRA does not combine text from different sources, texts from different sources are not required to be in the same language. LIRA can utilize text from multiple languages, as long as sources are consistent with their language usage.

In this paper, we present a model of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic simulated by a multi-agent system (MAS) based on demographic data and medical knowledge. Demographic data are linked to the distribution of the population according to age and to an index of socioeconomic fragility with regard to the elderly. Medical knowledge are related to two risk factors: age and obesity. The contributions of this approach are as follows. Firstly, the two aggravating risk factors are introduced into the MAS using fuzzy sets. Secondly, the worsening of disease caused by these risk factors is modeled by fuzzy aggregation operators. The appearance of virus variants is also introduced into the simulation through a simplified modeling of their contagiousness. Using real data from inhabitants of an island in the Antilles (Guadeloupe, FWI), we model the rate of the population at risk which could be critical cases, if neither social distancing nor barrier gestures are respected by the entire population. The results show that hospital capacities are exceeded. The results show that hospital capacities are exceeded. The socioeconomic fragility index is used to assess mortality and also shows that the number of deaths can be significant.

The financial domain has seen considerable knowledge Systems activity. Some of the efforts have resulted in deployable Systems, but many others have met with much less success. Commentators have attempted to discern broad, universal indicators which explain or predict success. More recently, however, it has become clearer that a principal cause of the difficultes encountered is the incongruence between the real world task and the System architecture employed by developers. Proceeding from the latter perspective, this paper concerns itself with knowledge Systems for the provision of investment related financial advice. The various tasks involved are differentiated and correlated to the System architectures employed by developers. It is seen that while simple rulebased Systems suffice for some tasks, others indicate the need for techniques such as Case-Based Design.

The Japanese Fifth Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) project has chosen logic programming for its core programming language. It has recognized the major contribution that logic programming has to make not only in artificial intelligence but in database systems and software specification as well. It has recognized and intends to exploit the greater potential that logic programming has to offer for taking advantage of the parallelism possible with innovative multiprocessor computer architectures.

Logic programming is a programming paradigm with potential to contribute to software engineering. This paper is concerned with one dimension of that potential, the impact that experience with developing logic programs can have on software design. We present a logic programming perspective on programming patterns, systematic program development, design for provability, and the paradigm of meta-programming.

The First International Conference on Autonomous Agents brought together researchers concerned with implementing systems that perceive and act in dynamic, unpredictable environments, that coordinate interoperation among complementary component capabilities, and that perform significant jobs with a high degree of autonomy.

This paper considers the problem of generating conflict-free movement schedules for a set of vehicles that are operating simultaneously in a common airspace. In both civilian air traffic management and military air campaign planning contexts, it is crucial that the movements of different vehicles be coordinated so as to avoid collisions and near misses. Our approach starts from a view of airspace management as a 4D resource allocation problem, where the space in which vehicles must maneuver is itself managed as a capacitated resource. We introduce a linear octree representation of airspace capacity to index vector-based vehicle routes and efficiently detect regions of potential conflict. Generalizing the notion of contention-based search heuristics, we next define a scheduling algorithm that proceeds by first solving a relaxed version of the problem to construct a spatial capacity profile (represented as an octree), and then using spatio-temporal regions where demand exceeds capacity to make conflict-avoiding vehicle routing and scheduling decisions. We illustrate the utility of this basic representation and search algorithm in two ways. First, to demonstrate the overall viability of the approach, we present experimental results using data representing a realistically sized air campaign planning domain. Second, we define a more abstract notion of ‘encounter set’, which tolerates some amount of conflict on the assumption that on-board deconfliction processes can take appropriate avoidance maneuvers at execution time, and show that generation of this more abstract form of predictive guidance can be obtained without loss in computational efficiency.

“Integration of Machine Learning and Knowledge Acquisition” may be a surprising title for an ECAI-94 workshop, since most machine learning (ML) systems are intended for knowledge acquisition (KA). So what seems problematic about integrating ML and KA? The answer lies in the difference between the approaches developed by what is referred to as ML and KA research. Apart from sonic major exceptions, such as learning apprentice tools (Mitchell et al., 1989), or libraries like the Machine Learning Toolbox (MLT Consortium, 1993), most ML algorithms have been described without any characterization in terms of real application needs, in terms of what they could be effectively useful for. Although ML methods have been applied to “real world” problems few general and reusable conclusions have been drawn from these knowledge acquisition experiments. As ML techniques become more and more sophisticated and able to produce various forms of knowledge, the number of possible applications grows. ML methods tend then to be more precisely specified in terms of the domain knowledge initially required, the control knowledge to be set and the nature of the system output (MLT Consortium, 1993; Kodratoff et al., 1994).

The aim of this article is to propose a model for the measurement of the strength of rhetorical arguments (i.e., threats, rewards, and appeals), which are used in persuasive negotiation dialogues when a proponent agent tries to convince his opponent to accept a proposal. Related articles propose a calculation based on the components of the rhetorical arguments, that is, the importance of the goal of the opponent and the certainty level of the beliefs that make up the argument. Our proposed model is based on the pre-conditions of credibility and preferability stated by Guerini and Castelfranchi. Thus, we suggest the use of two new criteria for the strength calculation: the credibility of the proponent and the status of the goal of the opponent in the goal processing cycle. We use three scenarios in order to illustrate our proposal. Besides, the model is empirically evaluated and the results demonstrate that the proposed model is more efficient than previous works of the state of the art in terms of numbers of negotiation cycles, number of exchanged arguments, and number of reached agreements.

First-order expressive capabilities allow Bayesian networks (BNs) to model problem domains where the number of entities, their attributes, and their relationships can vary significantly between model instantiations. First-order BNs are well-suited for capturing knowledge representation dependencies, but literature on design patterns specific to first-order BNs is few and scattered. To identify useful patterns, we investigated the range of dependency models between combinations of random variables (RVs) that represent unary attributes, functional relationships, and binary predicate relationships. We found eight major patterns, grouped into three categories, that cover a significant number of first-order BN situations. Selection behavior occurs in six patterns, where a relationship/attribute identifies which entities in a second relationship/attribute are applicable. In other cases, certain kinds of embedded dependencies based on semantic meaning are exploited. A significant contribution of our patterns is that they describe various behaviors used to establish the RV’s local probability distribution. Taken together, the patterns form a modeling framework that provides significant insight into first-order expressive BNs and can reduce efforts in developing such models. To the best of our knowledge, there are no comprehensive published accounts of such patterns.

Abstract interpretation is a principled approach to inferring properties of a program's execution by simulating that execution using an interpreter which computes over some abstraction of the program's usual, concrete domain, and which collects the information of interest during the execution. Abstract interpretation has been used as the basis of research in logic and functional programming, particularly in applications concerned with compiler optimizations. However, abstract interpretation has the potential to be used in other applications, such as debugging or verification of programs. In this paper we review the use of abstract interpretation to both compiler optimizations and to other applications, attempting to give a flavour of the kind of information it is possible to infer and some of the issues involved

One of the main reasons for the sustained activity and interest in the field of agent-based systems, apart from the obvious recognition of its value as a natural and intuitive way of understanding the world, is its reach into very many different and distinct fields of investigation. Indeed, the notions of agents and multi-agent systems are relevant to fields ranging from economics to robotics, in contributing to the foundations of the field, being influenced by ongoing research, and in providing many domains of application. While these various disciplines constitute a rich and diverse environment for agent research, the way in which they may have been linked by it is a much less considered issue. The purpose of this panel was to examine just this concern, in the relationships between different areas that have resulted from agent research. Informed by the experience of the participants in the areas of robotics, social simulation, economics, computer science and artificial intelligence, the discussion was lively and sometimes heated.

Knowledge based systems are used in applications where an incorrect decision could put human life in jeopardy. A quick trawl through the World Wide Web is sufficient, these days, to locate such applications in design, analysis and testing; protection advice; operator decision support; signal monitoring; embedded systems and others. Depending on the type of system, these either give information which is not guaranteed to be correct (in many operator support applications) or which is imprecise (for example in fuzzy logic controllers).
