page 79 note 1 Ganapati Sastri read paṇikaṁ rūpam, which, whether original to him or found in hia authorities, is evidently merely the guess of someone who did not understand the points in issue.
page 81 note 1 This dictionary takes the word as applying to all kinds of theft, but I have never heard it used of anything except cattle theft. The derivation it gives is paṇa-hāra, which is not possible.
page 83 note 1 I cannot trace the word in any dictionary of the Indo-Aryan vernaculars, except the Hindī Śabdasāgar, though I should be surprised if it is not familiar enough to Nepalis and to dwellers in the eastern part of the United Provinces; nor does it appear in Wilson's glossary or in Hobson-Jobson. The India Office kindly searched at my request for early reports by English officers on the subject, but could find nothing to the point.
