In the current study, commercially valuable penaeid shrimp, Melicertus kerathurus, were attained approximately monthly in the Izmir Bay, southern Aegean Sea from May 2004 to April 2005. For each specimen, we measured body length, body weight and ovarian weight, and calculated gonadosomatic indices (GSI). GSI values results pointed out that the GSI in Melicertus kerathurus increased during vitellogenesis (2.03 ± 0.24%) but sharply decreased after spawning (0.53 ± 0.35%) to reach levels similar to those in immature females. We also examined oogenesis in Melicertus kerathurus by histological observation of the ovary to determine reproductive cycle for future domestication. The observation on the gonads leads us to conclude that there are five stages of development for the females: (I) previtellogenic; (II) early vitellogenic; (III) late vitellogenic; (IV) mature; and (V) spent. Histological characteristics showed that the best time to capture adult shrimps for breeding purposes was between the months of April and June. The numbers of each oocyte type that were present were also counted, measured, and used to evaluate the following traits: total oocyte number; mean oocytes diameter; and maximum oocyte diameter. Oocyte diameter was significantly different at all stages (P < 0.05) and the largest diameter was observed as 163.92 ± 4.51µm at stage IV.

Surface fluorescence measurements in June in the Bay of Biscay showed little correlation with chlorophyll a measurements due to the presence of a marked diurnal fluorescence rhythm although satisfactory correlations have been obtained at other times of year in the same region (see Fig. 10 of Pingree et al. 1982). By contrast, the beam attenuation coefficient values showed a good correlation with the chlorophyll a measurements and can be used to map the sea surface distribution of chlorophyll a when the diurnal rhythm is present, particularly when the phytoplankton is dominated by a single species. This conclusion may be of considerable practical significance when contemplating synoptic surveys in such situations. As Prezlin & Ley (1980) have observed there is growing awareness that fluorescence per unit chlorophyll a is not a constant that can be used reliably in mixed phytoplankton biomass estimates based on in vivo chlorophyll a fluorescence, and the problem is clearly compounded if some species exhibit a marked diurnal fluorescence rhythm. Furthermore, the present observations support the caveats of Falkowski & Kiefer (1985), that in situ moored fluorometers, the use of air-borne laser-induced fluorescence, or satellite-received passive, solar-induced fluorescence, only measure fluorescence, not chlorophyll per se.

The fluorescence response near the shelf-break over a 24 h period following a drogued dahn buoy showed a variation of about a factor of 5 between the day and night fluorescence levels. Beam attenuation coefficient measurements and Coulter Counter analyses showed that these results could not be attributed to the migration of the phytoplankton.

The pilchard, Clupea pilchardus Walbaum, is known to spawn in summer in the southern North Sea in the neighbourhood of the Sandettié Bank (Buchanan-Wollaston, 1911; Furnestin, 1939a, 1945) and in the eastern English Channel off Beachy Head (Furnestin, 1939a, 1945). Furnestin (1939b, 1945) concludes from these records that spawning is in all probability continuous throughout the Channel from the southern North Sea to the Celtic Sea. There appear, however, to be no previous references to pilchard spawning in the central part of the English Channel. The following records from the area are of interest therefore, and provide confirmation of Furnestin’s conclusion.

Population dynamics of the planktonic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia pungens was investigated at the Zhelin Bay, China, between May 2000 and December 2004. Monthly or seasonal plankton samples were collected from nine stations along the inner to outer bay gradient. Among the 1045 samples collected, P. pungens on average accounted for 2.9% of the total phytoplankton cells, with densities ranging from 0 to 50.94 × 104 cells l−1 and a grand mean of 1.43 × 104 cells l−1. Two hundred and fourteen samples (20.5%) had densities of P. pungens above 104 cells l−1 and 40 samples (3.8%) had densities that were above 105 cells l−1. Results of the grey incidence–regression analysis show that water temperature, zooplankton and salinity were the most important among the 13 environmental factors influencing population density of P. pungens. Water temperature has a highly significant linear relationship with the population density, with 23.8°C or higher being an essential condition for the algal bloom. Grazing by zooplankton was probably the most important factor controlling the algal bloom. With continued decreasing of richness and organism size of the zooplankton community at the Zhelin Bay, P. pungens blooms may become more frequent. The bay has a large-scale mariculture operation, therefore it is important to carefully examine and monitor the potential impacts of toxin-producing P. pungens on human health as well as ecosystem health of the bay.

A behavioural assay based on a ‘homosexual’ response in males has revealed that female Harmothoe imbricata release a substance that induces pair formation. Extracts from unfertilized spawned oocytes (diameter approximately 120 μm), but not sub-mature oocytes (90 μm diameter) removed directly from the coelomic cavity, have significant pair formation-inducing activity in comparison to the control. Preliminary results indicate that the substance is stable under standard purification techniques and larger than 10 kDa, as well as being heat and trypsin insensitive.

Abundance and structure of phytoplankton and zooplankton, along with their relationship to hydrographic conditions were determined in the highly stratified estuary of the karstic Ombla River, south-eastern Adriatic. Sampling was carried out during 17 cruises within a one year period. River discharge lowered surface salinity and enriched the estuary with NO3 and SiO4. Nutrient ratios suggested that PO4 was the most likely limiting nutrient for phytoplankton growth in the estuary. Diatoms were present in low numbers and dominated the winter–early spring period. Dinoflagellates dominated from the end of May to August. Phytoplankton and zooplankton were composed mostly of marine species and their abundance decreased in seaward direction. Planktonic populations are controlled by the river runoff, temperature, salinity, nutrient concentrations and grazing. The results were consistent with the hypothesis that no algal blooms have been recorded due to short renewal time.

Several types of relationships link organisms to each other, including competition, predation and various types of associations. This paper presents the first case of association/interaction between dugongs, Dugong dugon, the only strictly marine herbivorous mammal, and three species of tropical dolphins in and around the lagoon of Mayotte (45°10'E 12°50'S), in the western tropical Indian ocean. Data were collected opportunistically from 1999 to 2005 in the surrounding waters of Mayotte from boat (N=2 observations) and ULM (ultra-light motorized vessel, N=2). The dolphin species involved in associations with dugongs were Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, Tursips aduncus, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, Sousa chinensis, and spinner dolphin, Stenella longirostris. In one case, dugongs were associated with both bottlenose and humpback dolphins. Associations were observed in the protected waters of the lagoon and outside, along the external slope of the barrier reef. Group size, activity and group structure of each species were recorded. Behavioural observations suggest that dugongs and dolphins were engaged in similar activities, such as travelling, on several occasions and were clearly associated when group formation was tight. If dolphins and dugongs may not associate for feeding purposes, then these interactions may occur: (1) for predation avoidance toward sharks; or (2) without any ecological reasons due to dolphin and dugong habitat overlap around the island.

Potential fecundity, number of oocytes in the mature ovary, and realized fecundity, number of eggs extruded and attached to the pleopods of female Nephrops, caught at the start of the incubation period were estimated for females from the eastern and western Irish Sea grounds. Potential fecundity was found to differ significantly between eastern and western Irish Sea stocks, while realized fecundity did not differ between areas. Inter-year comparison of realized fecundity, and effective fecundity (the number of mature eggs on the pleopods of females at the end of the incubation period) in the western Irish Sea stocks revealed no significant variation over time. Egg loss during the transition from oocytes in the ovary to mature eggs increased with female size, ranging from 40% at 25 mm carapace length (CL) to 65% at 40 mm CL. No relationship was found between egg diameter or volume and female size.

Chub mackerel, Scomber colias, is widely distributed in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean including the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. This medium-sized pelagic fish species occurs in deeper waters during the colder part of the year and schools are found in coastal waters during the warmer parts of the year, where they spawn and feed. Atlantic chub mackerel is one of the most important commercial fish throughout its habitat and as a consequence of its wide distribution and broad commercial exploitation, biological information on the growth and mortality is required for stock assessment and management. Despite the abundance and economic importance of S. colias in the Adriatic Sea, knowledge about its biology and population dynamics is still limited. Studies of the age, growth, mortality and exploitation rates of S. colias have not been undertaken previously in the Adriatic Sea. Therefore, the exploitation status of this species' stock in the Adriatic Sea is unknown. The purpose of this study was to provide information on the age, growth and length–weight relationship as well as estimates of mortality and exploitation rate in order to define the present state of the population in the Adriatic Sea.

A description is given of an underwater camera unit mounted inside a high-speed tow-net body. The method of using this apparatus for surveying the seabed is described. The illustrations show that good quality results can be obtained when the camera is towed at speeds around 5 knots. By keeping the camera within a fathom from the bottom, satisfactory photographs can be obtained even where turbidity prevents photography at greater ranges.

A novel, automatic method for the detection, extraction and characterization of marine mammal tonal calls is presented. Signals are automatically detected from the spectrogram, isolated using region-based segmentation, extracted and finally characterized by means of a fixed number of radial basis function (RBF) coefficients. A total of sixteen RBF coefficients are sufficient to accurately capture the time–frequency information contained in the calls. These coefficients can be later used to classify signals based on their characteristics. New specific functions for contour extraction and cross-resolution have been developed. The performance of the method has been extensively tested using simulated signals and a set of recordings covering a significant range of situations that can be encountered at sea.

Between May of 2000 and July of 2001 a study aiming to determine the seasonal variation of syllid local population abundances was carried out. Samples were taken every second month and consisted of two replicates, each one being a quadrat 20 cm wide. After fixing, the samples were washed and the draining water was passed through a 1 mm sieve; then the syllids were identified and counted. For each replicate a number of ecological indexes were calculated, namely population density, number of species and Shannon's and Simpson's diversity indexes, computing mean values for each sample. In order to identify the most representative species of the taxocoenosis the Ci (constancy index, frequency of the species ranging from 0 to 1) and Di (dominance index, relative abundance ranging from 0 to 100 considering all the collected individuals) were computed for each one.

Analysis of the eight samples yielded 6548 individuals and 48 species belonging to the four subfamilies of Syllidae, of which Exogoninae and Syllinae were the most abundant and diverse. During the study period, the syllid taxocoenosis suffered dramatic changes. The abundance, that in May of 2000 was 33,375±775 individuals/m2, diminished to 2162.5±37.5 in September. After this date, the population density slowly increased. The number of present species evolved in a very similar way. Twelve species occurred in all the samples, although just six were abundant enough to yield Ci×Di products exceeding 5, thus being considered as good descriptors of the taxocoenosis. The variation of population density for most of these species more or less paralleled that of the total population of syllids. With regards to relative abundance, the taxocoenosis was always clearly dominated by Exogoninae species, especially by Salvatoria vieitezi, whose dominance scores always fluctuated around 45%. Syllis prolifera was the only important non-Exogoninae species in terms of dominance, although this parameter showed strong variation in this species.

To study some early life history traits of Lipophrys pholis, 110 recruits (TL ≤ 30 mm) were collected in April and May 2013 during the low tide periods in four rocky beaches along the west (Cabo do Mundo, Peniche and Vale do Homem) and south (Olhos de Água) Portuguese coasts. Pelagic larval duration, size at settlement and age at coastal recruitment were back-calculated from the microstructure of otoliths. Pelagic larval duration estimated from micro-increment counts until the settlement marks ranged from 57 to 73 days and showed a latitudinal reduction trend from north to south. This variable seems to be related in 30% with the regional seawater temperatures probably through the direct effect on the somatic growth. Settlement sizes (~19 mm) did not show any regional differences suggesting that this is a more conservative character within species. The mean age at coastal recruitment varied between 69 and 93 days, but northern individuals were recruited at an older age. Back-calculated spawning, hatching and settlement dates appear to be unrelated to the lunar cycle for L. pholis.

A dense population of Polybius henslowi Leach was recorded at the surface of the sea 15 miles off the north coast of Spain. The depth of water at this point was 1740 m. Visual observations of the swimming behaviour show that Polybius tends to swim with the body facing diagonally and backwards against the current. The space between individuals appears to be maintained deliberately and was never less than 6 ft. during daylight. Measurements show that there are at least two sizegroups present. Females represent 40% of the total of 251 animals collected, and these were at approximately the same reproductive state with the ova maturing. The males are on average 2·3 mm longer than the females. No food was found in the stomach of any of the animals taken.

An account is given of the general structure of the body skeleton of the spatangid larva. A considerable change occurs in the skeleton as the larva increases in size, some parts being absorbed and new parts appearing. Of particular interest is the replacement of the anterior transverse rod by the ventral horizontal rod.

The skeletons of larvae, young stages to late stages, of Echinocardium cordatum, E. flavescens, Spatangus purpureus and Brissopsis lyrifera are described. The larvae of Echinocardium and Spatangus are, in essentials, very similar; that of Brissopsis differs greatly from them. A striking difference is that in Brissopsis the ventral horizontal rod arises from the postoral arm and anterior to the anterior transverse rod, in the other two genera it arises from the body rod posterior to the anterior transverse rod.

The replacement of the anterior transverse rod by a ventral horizontal rod is probably normal in clypeastroid larvae also.

Allozymes of Paracentrotus lividus from Palermo Gulf in the northern Sicilian coast (Italy) and from a small body-size population in the western Greek coast (Ionian Sea) were investigated by PAGE. Five of the twenty examined loci were polymorphic (AAT*, ADH*, ME*, PGI* and PGM*) over each population with a polymorphism value of 0–25. Average heterozygosity was equal to 0081 in the Sicilian sample and 0084 in the Greek. Deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were significant in ME* and PGI* loci (as calculated by y). Nei's (1978) genetic distance (D=0–0025) index described a close identity between the two samples. F ST value of polymorphic loci ranged from 0001 to 0029, its mean value (0–008) resulting low and appearing to be discriminate between the samples with a significant difference (P<0–05). The number of migrants per generation was equal to 31.

Reproduction in the shallow-water, sponge-dwelling, branching syllid Ramisyllis multicaudata exhibits several features unique among syllids and among annelids in general. We describe and illustrate the segmental asymmetry which intervenes between regions of symmetry, only found in branching annelids. We describe the morphology of the stolons and of the stolon stalks, which are unique to branching syllids but differ in detail from those of the other known branching syllid, Syllis ramosa. We also illustrate newly found paddle-shaped chaetae, which might indicate that these stolons do swim. We list the number of branch points and termini in an effort to gauge the extent of branching in a worm contained in a small sponge. The species appears to have separate sexes, but this cannot be proven. We compare R. multicaudata and S. ramosa as originally described and find new morphological differences between the branching syllid from Japan described as S. ramosa and R. multicaudata. We also compare the known stolons of branching syllids to those of other genera of the ‘ribbon clade’, a group including Trypanobia and Trypanosyllis, now known to be close relatives of R. multicaudata. Ramisyllis multicaudata is the first member of the ribbon clade, and one of few Syllinae, known to have sexually dimorphic stolons.

The cellular features of mercury and selenium accumulation has been studied by transmission electron microscopy and x-ray microprobe analysis in the liver of striped dolphins. Mercury and selenium occurred as dense intracellular granules, located mainly within the liver macrophages (Kupffer cells). Granules were composed of 150 A spherical particles showing the same electron diffraction pattern and x-ray spectrum as mercuric selenide. The role of macrophages in mercuric selenide granule production and storage is discussed.

The second recorded specimen of Stygiomedusafabulosa Russell was taken in June 1971 from 1200–1400 m in the Bay of Biscay, near the area in which the first was caught. The similarity of the two specimens of S.fabulosa suggests that Stygiomedusa stauchi Repelin, described from a single specimen taken near the Congo estuary, is a distinct species.

Submerged artificial surface imitates newly available habitat for settlement of marine fauna. It also enables study of the timing of benthic larval settlement. Such knowledge is important if the model of possible recovery after disturbance in protected areas is to be assessed. During this study recruitment of sessile benthic invertebrate fauna at spatial and temporal scales was investigated using artificial panels submerged in the Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (Wales, UK). Panels were exchanged monthly between May 2009 and September 2011 (with the exclusion of winter time). Recruitment was highly variable with regard to time and distribution; abundance and number of recruiting species varied significantly between sites (about 2 km apart from each other), depths (6 and 12 m), position on panels (top or underside) and years without any obvious trends. The highest number of individuals and highest values of species richness were at Bernies Rocks, at the greater depth and on the underside surface of panels. Bryozoans were the dominant taxon on panels in each studied year and month. Most macrofaunal species noted on panels exhibit a colonial life strategy with short-lived, non-feeding larval stage. Although many species settle all year round, levels of settlement usually peak in summer months, showing a seasonal recruitment pattern (Bugula fulva, Spirobranchus triqueter, Chorizopora brongniarti and Escharoides coccinea). Some species had a pronounced settlement peak in spring (e.g. Electra pilosa and Balanus crenatus).
