Periodic surveys of the subtidal epifaunal community on the gorgonian Melithaea flabellifera were conducted over a five year period at the Izu Peninsula, southern Japan. The occurrence patterns of epifaunal species on M. flabellifera were examined. The epifauna consisted of 16 species representing five phyla. The amphipod Incisocalliope symbioticus dominated (usually >80%) and occurred throughout the study.

A total of 327 yeast strains from seawater, sediments, mud of salterns, guts of the marine fish and marine algae were obtained. After crude protein of the yeasts was estimated by the method of Kjehldahl, we found that eight strains of the marine yeasts grown in the medium with 20 g l−1 glucose contained more than 30.4 g protein per 100 g of cell dry weight. The results of routine identification and molecular methods show that they belong to Metschnikowa reukaui, Cryptococcus aureus, Aureobasidium pullulan, Yarrowia lipolytica and Hanseniaspora uvarum, respectively. With the exception of Aureobasidium pullulans 4#2 with nucleic acid of 7.7% (w/w), all other yeast strains contained less than 5.0% (w/w) of nucleic acid. Analysis of fatty acids shows that all the yeast strains tested had a large amount of C18:0 and C18:1 fatty acids while analysis of amino acids indicates that the yeast strains tested had a large amount of essential amino acids, especially lysine and leucine which are very important nutritive components for marine animals.

There seems to be some uncertainty about the exact stage at which the horny case is secreted around the fertilised Elasmobranch egg. Those textbooks which have been consulted either pass over the matter in silence or give the impression that the shell is secreted while the egg is passing through the nidamental organ. Sedgwick (1905), for example, says (p. 143): “The shell is formed round the ovum and its albumen in the lower dilated part of the oviduct, but the material of which it is composed is secreted by the oviducal gland.” Of late years the question seems to have received little attention, but there are several papers on the subject published twenty or more years ago.

A hermaphrodite specimen of Amphioxus has been taken at Plymouth having one gonadial pouch filled with ova and the remaining pouches filled with sperm. This specimen closely resembles a similar one taken by Goodrich at Naples.

The liver and intestine of the Plymouth specimen are abnormal, but no parasites have been identified in the tissues to account for these abnormalities.

It is, moreover, improbable that there is any normal sex-change in Amphioxus, since three independent investigators have found very small specimens of both sexes, therefore no satisfactory explanation can be given of the occurrence of hermaphroditism in the specimen.

Amphioxus have been found to spawn in June, and larvae have beenobtained from the captive specimens.It is suggested that the club-shaped gland may secrete a substance for attaching the larva of Amphioxus to objects, and that this function may be correlated with the asymmetry shown in the early development of the Amphioxus .larva.

Diversity and biomass of ciliates and heterotrophic dinoflagellates were analysed at six stations on a south–north transect (mimicking a time span of months in the biological succession during the Arctic spring–summer) from open water through drift ice and into fast ice (72°30′N 76°32′N) during spring 1993 in the open Barents Sea. A pycnocline was observed beneath the sea ice at 40–50 m. A diatom spring bloom beneath the ice with chlorophyll-a maximum >10 μg l−1 and a diverse protozoan community with a peak biomass of 34 μg C l−1 was associated with this bloom. Maximum biomass of tintinnids (1 μg C l−1), athecate dinoflagellates (8 μg C l−1) and thecate dinoflagellates (26 μg C l−1) were found associated with the chlorophyll-a maximum in the upper 10 m of the water column beneath the sea ice at the northern stations. In contrast, the protozooplankton community was dominated by naked ciliates at the southern open water stations. Here chlorophyll-a was low (<1 μg l−1) and the maximum biomass of protozooplankton was 10 μg C l−1 of which naked ciliates accounted for >50%.

Cell sizes and estimated carbon content of cells >11 μm, as well as depth by depth biomass of 12 species/types of naked ciliates, 12 tintinnids, 12 athecate dinoflagellates and 24 thecate dinoflagellates, are presented. The community of naked ciliates was dominated by Strombidium spp. and Strobilidium spp., the tintinnids were dominated by Parafavella spp., Ptychocylis, Leprotintinnus, Acanthostomella and Tintinnopsis. The very small gyro-/gymnodinoid cells and Gyrodinium cf. spirale dominated the athecate dinoflagellates and the thecate dinoflagellates by the heterotroph Protoperidinium spp. generally accounted for the major part of the protozooplankton biomass along the transect. The Margalef diversity index revealed lowest diversity of ciliates and heterotrophic dinoflagellates in the open water and higher at ice-associated stations. The overall diversity was coupled with prey availability in terms of food concentration, but already saturated at 0.1 μg chlorophyll-a l−1.

The populations of three sympatric hermit crabs, Pagurus excavatus, Anapagurus alboranensis and Anapagurus petiti were studied in a shallow (15–25 m) sandy area in the north-western Mediterranean. Seasonal abundance, seasonal size frequency, sex ratio and reproductive periods were examined. Pagurus excavatus was the largest and most abundant species in the zone. Pagarus excavatus and Anapagarus alboranensis are sexually dimorphic in relation to size, with males reaching larger sizes than females. However, the males and females of Anapagurus petiti reach similar large sizes. Anapagurus petiti has a sex ratio that is female biased, whereas A. alboranensis and P. excavatus are 1:1. Anapagurus petiti showed a higher reproductive activity during warmer seasons, while in A. alboranensis the proportion of ovigerous females was high throughout the year, with a minimum in autumn. The activity and clutch size of P. excavatus decreased during summer.

The Marine Protected Area in Gilbert Bay, Labrador is the first established in the subarctic coastal zone of eastern Canada. A standardized survey of the fish fauna of Gilbert Bay was initiated during the ice-free season of 2004 to provide baseline information on the fish present in water less than 15 m deep. Beach seines and gill-nets sampled three management zones within the bay which are afforded different levels of protection from human activity. The 25 species in 15 families recorded belong to five ecological guilds: (1) estuarine and marine fish resident in the bay; (2) anadromous species transiting the bay; (3) marine species which migrate into the bay to spawn; (4) offshore-spawning marine fish for which the bay is a nursery area; and (5) marine species which occasionally migrate into the bay to feed. Gilbert Bay lies in a transition zone between Arctic and cold-temperate biogeographical provinces, and its fish fauna is dissimilar from a cold-temperate fish assemblage described for Trinity Bay in eastern Newfoundland.

Blue sharks (Prionace glauca) and oilfish (Ruvettus pretiosus) are frequently caught incidentally in the swordfish surface drifting longline fishery of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. An information theoretic generalized additive model approach, modelling separately: (1) the probability of making a catch; and (2) the positive catch rates, suggested the presence of intra-annual variations in their abundance and revealed interesting associations with some environmental features. Blue sharks were more frequently encountered during late summer in cool water masses. However, the likelihood of making a larger catch peaked in warmer waters through late spring in the vicinity of land. Occurrences of blue sharks were more frequent to the south-west (Ionian Sea), while positive catch rates were higher in the eastern-most regions (Levantine). Oilfish occurrences, as well as catch rates, were always above average to the east. Intra-annual variation was analogous to that of blue sharks. The species showed a preference for cooler water bodies and its distribution was strongly dictated by the lunar cycle. Annual time series showed a decreasing trend of blue sharks abundance. Catch rates for both species depended on fishing gear configuration. Deeper settings (>20 m), more resilient lines and use of fish attractant light-sticks increased the probability of capturing a fish.

Observations and censi of the echinoid Paracentrotus lividus over 40 y at Lough Hyne marine nature reserve have revealed population fluctuations of >4 orders of magnitude. The P. lividus population has been anomalously low since the mid 1980s. The population age–size structure has also changed considerably and is now dominated by older individuals. Sea temperature is a known and important determinant of spawning (and recruitment) in this species. In certain years sea surface temperatures (SST) may not reach critical values for P. lividus mass-spawning to be triggered. In addition, toxic dinoflagellate blooms may have been responsible for large-scale mortalities within short periods. Years of anomalously low SSTs match the timing of critical decreases in the Lough Hyne P. lividus population. Years with low maximum SSTs coincide with the timing of major El Niňo Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. We suggest a SST and possibly ENSO link to unfished (Lough Hyne) P. lividus population changes and propose such links as potential aggravating factors in the decline of the fisheries.

Variation in size of fossil euryhaline ostracods is discussed and compared to size variation in recent forms. The most likely cause of variation in size of euryhaline ostracods is variation in salinity. Similarities are indicated between Fabanella and Cyprideis species.

The larval form (late cercaria stage) of Pharyngora bacillaris (Molin) has been recorded by Nicoll (1910) from Plymouth as occurring free in the coarse-meshed tow-nettings in August. The adult is a common parasite of the mackerel, and the above is the only record of its larval stage.

Whilst examining tow-nettings at Plymouth in 1915 it was found that certain medusæ were at times abundantly infected with a trematode which proved to be the larval form of Pharyngora bacillaris. As it also occurred free, although almost certainly having originally come from the medusæ, it is obviously the form recorded by Nicoll, who expected the host to be a crustacean and unsuccessfully examined copepods in order to find it.

The medusæ found to contain the trematode were Obelia sp., Cosmetira pilosella, and Turris pileata. Cosmetira pilosella was the commonest host in the early summer when Pharyngora was most abundant, but in the later summer Obelia was found to contain it frequently, Cosmetira not occurring at those times in the tow-nettings. Phialidium hemisphericum was also a host in the later summer and autumn. Even in December it still occurred, though very rarely. A ctenophore may also serve as host for this trematode, as it is occasionally found clinging to the inside of the stomach of Pleurobrachia pileus.

The parasite is generally to be found clinging to the manubrium or stomach wall of its host, but sometimes it occurs underneath the umbrella wall, so that it looks as if it were on the top, the wall being so transparent; on further examination, however, it is seen to be underneath.

The respiration of Limnoria was measured manometrically in sixteen solutions ranging from 6% to full strength sea water (36%). In a second series of experiments, simultaneous measurements were made in full strength sea water and in dilutions of 7, 14, 21 and 28% respectively. No significant correlation was found between the respiratory rate and the degree of dilution of the medium.

Among gastropods, dimorphism is reported in shell size, radular characteristic, and to a lesser extent in shell shape. The relationship of dimorphic characters of the shell with spawning is scarcely studied in literature. Buccinanops globulosus is an interesting model to study sexual dimorphism in shell shape, because the adults attach their egg capsules to the females’ own shells (callus zone). Our hypothesis is that the shell dimorphism is evidenced in the form (size and shape) of callus zones of the females' shells, compared with the males'. In order to test this hypothesis we use a 3D geometric morphometrics (GM) method with several advantages over 2D GM. The relationship between callus shape and size was allometric. During growth, the main callus shape changes are related to the mean size increment, which is more evident in larger females. These callus zones are characteristically slender in males and small females, and more inflated in large females. Our analyses revealed that female shells are different from male ones and those differences are significant on the callus zone where the egg capsules are attached by the female. This finding suggests a relationship of the shell form with spawning. Our findings are not only relevant in terms of the shell dimorphism of the particular spawning substrate area (callus zones) and its reproductive implications, but also provide insights into the evaluation of shell shape variation on areas without type I or II anatomical landmarks in 3D GM.

Observations on gonad morphology and the structure of ovaries and testes of the coronate scyphozoans Atolla wyvillei and Periphylla periphylla are described based on samples collected from the Gulf of Mexico and Cape Hatteras (north-western Atlantic). In A. wyvillei, gonads of distinguishable sex were observed in medusae as small as 17 mm bell diameter (BD). Spermatogenesis occurred within follicles (average 366 × 254 μm) that were evenly distributed throughout the gonad. Oocytes in different stages of development were observed in all the females with gonads. Oocytes arise from the gastrodermis and migrate into the mesoglea to develop from early-mid to late vitellogenic oocytes characterized by a large nucleus and granular (organic-rich) cytoplasm. The largest oocytes measured were 543 μm and 263 μm from the Gulf of Mexico and Cape Hatteras respectively. Possible reasons for this difference are discussed. In P. periphylla gonads were also initially observed in medusae 17 mm BD, although not all larger medusae had obvious gonads. Unlike A. wyvillei sperm follicles were arranged in long convoluted rows normally only one follicle thick. The organization of ooytes in female P. periphylla was very similar to A. wyvillei, although the gonads were small and the number of oocytes present in each gonad very low (<22). The largest oocyte measured was 777 μm in a 53 mm BD medusa. Although medusae were collected from one time period only (September) in this study, our findings appear to be in agreement with literature evidence indicating that coronate jellyfish produce few eggs continuously over a long time period. Aspects of gonad development and gametogenesis are discussed with respect to potential differences in site productivity and species identification.

One of the most problematic fishing methods in terms of by-catch and discarding is prawn-trawling. This paper analyses the incidental catch of an artisanal trawl fleet during two discrete Artemesia longinaris fishery seasons (2002 and 2004). The fishery season of A. longinaris operates monthly and it takes place in the surrounding area of the Barra do Rio Grande. Sampling was carried out during the fishing season (April–December) always on the same artisanal trawl boat. An observer was included on-board to avoid loss of information due to discards made by the fishermen at sea. Fifty species were caught: 38 fish and 12 crustaceans. Discrete fauna abundance and composition were recorded in analysed years, with higher by-catch ratios associated with elevated rainfall and low salinity. The overall discard ratio was 1:5.6, with values ranging from 1:11.3 in 2002 to 1:2.5 in 2004. The most striking differences between both years analysed were observed during autumn (1:75 in 2002 and 1:11.30 in 2004) and winter (1:16 in 2002 and 1:0.97 in 2004), while spring presented similar values (1:8 in 2002 and 1:4 in 2004). The discard ratio estimated in terms of number showed a different pattern, presenting overall values of 1:2.24 in 2002 and 1:0.5 in 2004. Higher estuarine runoff may have increased biomass production in the surrounding area of Patos Lagoon during 2002, sustaining higher abundance of estuarine-related and marine species in the area, as well as higher mean trophic level and abundance of top-predators. Conversely, A. longinaris production was consistently lower, since this marine species does not tolerate marked reductions in salinity. In 2004, salinity was higher, associated with low rainfall and favouring A. longinaris abundance in the area. During this dry year, the target-species was dominant in samples resulting in very low by-catch ratios, especially in winter (1:0.97). The catch was mainly composed of juvenile fish, since fishery is performed in nursery grounds.

The muscles of the paired fins of rays have long been known to possess large sensory endings of a special type, first described in Torpedo by Poloumordwinoff (1898) and Cavalie (1902), and subsequently re-examined by Barets (1956). They consist of many parallel beaded nerve fibres, derived from a large myelinated parent axon, lying between the muscle fibres of the fins. That they respond to stretch (as was inferred from their structure and position) was shown by Fessard & Sand (1937). Since these are the only sensory endings known in any fish which are stretch receptors lying amongst muscle fibres (neuromuscular spindles are absent from fishes), more information about their structure and relationships with the muscle fibres of the fins is desirable. In this note, we describe the ultra-structure of this simple type of stretch receptor, and the type of muscle fibre with which it is associated.

The genus Podocoryna is characterized by species living on shells usually inhabited by hermit crabs; but the mutual benefits of this association are not well understood.

This study, besides describing the biological cycle of the hydroid Podocoryna exigua, brings new information on the relationship between hydroid and the hermit crab Diogenes pugilator, especially concerning their trophic strategies.

The hydroid shows a seasonal cycle with a minimum density during summer and an increase during autumn and winter, reaching the highest value in spring. The production of medusae is almost constant during all seasons. The dwelling behaviour of the hermit crab affects a particular sedimentivorous strategy of the polyps while a clepto-commensalistic strategy is adopted by the hermit crab towards the hydroid. Laboratory experiments show that the presence/absence of the hermit crab in the shell and also the seawater temperature strongly influence the number of spines, particularly structures developing from polyps. In addition, free-living polyps in the sediments may represent a strategy to colonize free shells.

Elaphognathia cornigera is a temporary fish-parasitic isopod crustacean that inhabits intertidal sponges. The life cycle and growth rate of this species were investigated using a laboratory rearing experiment. In addition, a wild population of this gnathiid isopod was sampled at fortnightly intervals over a 2-year period on an intertidal rocky shore at Oura Bay, Izu Peninsula, southern Japan. The population dynamics of this species were assessed using data from the laboratory experiment. Under laboratory conditions, individuals reached maturity after alternating between the parasitic feeding stage and the independent moulting stage three separate times. The mean larval period at 25°C was around 52 days. All life stages were observed in the natural population between spring and autumn. The density curves for all larval stages showed three to four distinct peaks, with the exception of the first larvae just after eclosion. According to the emergence patterns and growth rates derived from the laboratory experiment, E. cornigera appeared to alternate generations three to four times per year. During the winter months, only larvae in the second post-feeding phase and adult males were observed. This may have resulted from a halt in the development of larvae at the second post-feeding stage, triggered by cold winter conditions, and the post-reproductive death of semelparous females. Overwintered larvae and adult males became the source of the new population the following spring.

The fish Hoplostethus mediterraneus is a bycatch of the deep-water trawling in the north-western Ionian Sea. Data on its life history traits were collected during twelve trawl surveys carried out at two month intervals, between August 1993 and July 1995.

A vertical distribution according to size was observed for this species. The year's young were recruited mainly during the spring-summer period. Sex-ratio changed by size with females larger than males. Mature specimens were found mainly between May and November with a reproductive peak during late summer.

Seasonal growth was detected in the otoliths; the maximum ages of 11 and 10 y were observed in females and males respectively. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters for the whole population were: L3C=287–08 mm, k=0–127 y, to=-2–131. No significant differences were detected between the growth patterns of the sexes. Overall growth perfomance depicted through size-distribution analysis was not significantly different from that obtained by otolith reading.

Estimates of natural mortality rate for the whole population ranged from 0–14 to 0–20. Population structure, growth pattern, age at first maturity and low natural mortality rate indicate a life history mainly constituted by k-strategy characters and regulated by density-dependent mechanisms.

The life-histories of the two species of Cerithiopsis are described here for the first time, that of Triphora perversa is partly known already. All three species are common in Plymouth and their larvæ are very common in the plankton in spring and summer. Pelseneer (1926) has described the eggs and newly-hatched larvæ of Triphora perversa from the Brittany coast and Fischer (1884) has noted that it has a very long free-swimming life, still being a veliger with up to 7 or 8 whorls. The eggs of Cerithiopsis barleei have now been found at Plymouth and the larvæ reared as far as a stage just before settling down, the late stages from the plankton being reared to the crawling stage in plunger-jar. The eggs of Cerithiopsis tubercularis have not yet been seen, but the larvæ are common in the plankton and the late larvæ have also been reared in a plunger-jar until the crawling stage.
