The breeding season of Nerophis lumbriciformis (Pisces: Syngnathidae), has not yet been determined for the southernmost part of its range. A total of 863 individuals was examined between March 1997 and November 1999. In Portugal, the breeding season of this species occurs throughout the year, with a marked reduction during summer and autumn, whilst in Britain it occurs from May to September. Despite these temporal differences, the water temperature at which breeding takes place is similar in the two areas (13–16°C). Together with preliminary laboratory observations with animals kept at different temperatures, these data support the hypothesis that the decrease in breeding activity during summer and autumn in Portugal is due to an inhibitory effect of high water temperature.

The present work records for the first time the association between ophiuroids and the octocoral Carijoa riisei. Carijoa riisei is a colonial octocoral very abundant in the littoral of Pernambuco (Brazil), with growth by creeping stolons with an arborescent structure creating an optimal environment for epibionts. The objectives of the work were to identify the species of Ophiuroidea associated with C. riisei, and to verify the existence of seasonality through the density, abundance and frequency of sampled taxa. Due to the known relationship between the ophiuroids and sponges related in the literature, the sponges founded associated with C. riisei were recorded. Seasonal samples of the beaches of Porto de Galinhas and Guadalupe were realized. In Guadalupe, 39 and 21 ophiuroids (dry and rainy seasons respectively) belonging to the families Ophiactidae (Ophiactis savignyi, Ophiactis lymani) and Ophiotrichidae (Ophiotrhix angulata) were identified. Ophiactis savignyi stood out in all the analysed stations (48.72% in dry season and 52.38% in rainy season). The average density of the ophiuroids was 10.74 ind/100 g of C. riisei, varying from 12.56 ind/100 g in the dry season to 8.92 ind/100 g, in the rainy season. Amongst the species of ophiuroids recorded in the samples, O. savignyi showed 80% and 100% frequency of occurrence in the dry and the rainy seasons, respectively, and O. lymani showed 80% during the dry season. The presence of O. lymani in Guadalupe constitutes the first record in Pernambuco state. Taking into account that all the ophiuroids collected in Guadalupe were considered juveniles (1–3 mm of disc diameter), the microhabitat created by C. riisei may be utilized as a recruitment place for some ophiuroids. No ophiuroids were found at Porto de Galinhas beach, just as for sponges. On the other hand, the ophiuroids were always found with sponges in Guadalupe beach. For this reason, the ecological relation of the ophiuroids with C. riisei could be observed as an occasional relation, in the way that the octocoral supplies a support structure to the growth of the many sponges that have given a favourable habitat to shelter ophiuroids.

Benthosema pterotum is a dominant myctophid in the shelf region of the East China Sea (ECS). They are a key species linking secondary producers and upper trophic levels. We examined the reproductive biology of B. pterotum in the ECS, based on 3065 specimens (10.7–54.8 mm standard length (SL)) sampled during cruises in 1999 and 2004–2009 to enable data over a 12 month cycle to be assessed. Between 14 and 30 mm SL, the ratio of females to males was ~1:1; it increased with SL, and all individuals ≥46 mm SL were females. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) at 50% sexual maturity of females and males was 3.91 and 0.24, respectively. Based on this criterion, females and males can mature at sizes larger than 28 mm and 24 mm SL, respectively. Although mature females having GSI ≥3.91 occurred over nine months (May–January), mean GSI of females peaked sharply during August–September, i.e. the primary spawning period. The hepatosomatic index peaked during April–July, and declined during August–September, indicating storage of materials and energy for reproduction. Based on data from seasonal bottom trawl surveys, small individuals of B. pterotum began to occur abundantly in autumn, and modal body lengths increased progressively during spring–summer, corresponding to the above reproductive seasonality. Oocytes at various sizes were found in mature ovaries, indicating that they are multiple spawners. Egg size at hydration ranged from 0.5 to 0.85 mm. Batch fecundity was positively correlated with SL, and ranged from 253 to 1942 eggs in fish from 30.1–54.8 mm SL.

This study analyses the significance of shell morphological variations in the venerid clam Tawera gayi, a typical element of shallow marine soft bottoms in southern South America and the most common species recovered from Late Quaternary marine deposits along the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego. Fossil and modern Tawera shells from different localities around the southern tip of South America were analysed using the Elliptic Fourier Analysis (EFA) method. Taking into account the palaeontological history of this genus in the southern hemisphere, EFA was also performed on shells of Tawera congeners from South Africa (T. philomela) and New Zealand (T. spissa). The use of EFA permitted the distinction between the three Tawera species and geographical differentiation in the T. gayi groups. These morphological variations of T. gayi appear best related to ecophenotypic plasticity as a response to different environmental conditions, although the palaeobiogeographical history of Tawera in South America cannot be ruled out.

Tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), together with triphenyltin (TPT), were investigated in eels from the Thames Estuary and the Weston Canal (Merseyside). Within individual eels, the concentrations of organotin (OT) compounds varied considerably between tissues. Tributyltin concentrations were highest in heart and gall bladder and lowest in muscle and gonad. Tributyltin was generally the most predominant of butyltin (BT) compounds present in eel tissues and DBT the least. Phenyltins were detected in eels from both locations, notably the Weston Canal where TPT was present up to 0.367 μg g−1 (as Sn) in liver samples. Concentrations of OTs in liver (and muscle) were independent of weight and length in the eel populations examined. In a survey of OTs in eel populations along the Thames Estuary hepatic TBT levels ranged from 0.066–0.347 μg g−1 dry wt (as Sn) in liver of eels and were generally highest in the mid-section of the estuary, resembling the distribution pattern of TBT in sediment. Proportions of TBT to total BTs were also elevated in eel from this section of the waterway, consistent with continuing inputs in this region, albeit at relatively low levels. Major sewage treatment plants are sited here and may represent a possible source.

Barnacles are one of the dominant macrofouling organisms found in the intertidal region throughout the world. Among the different species of barnacles Balanus amphitrite (=Amphibalanus amphitrite) is a favoured candidate organism used in experimental studies. Larval development in this barnacle includes planktotrophic naupliar stages followed by pre-settling cyprid instar. Studies have shown that availability of food during naupliar development is of critical importance to successful metamorphosis of the cypris larva. Traditionally barnacle larvae are raised in the laboratory providing mono-algal cultures of diatoms as food organisms. Such a luxury is not a reality in the wild. Observations to quantify the food available for the nauplii deliberated by monitoring the faecal pellets egested by freshly captured larvae from a tropical estuarine environment (Dona Paula bay, Goa, west coast of India) influenced by monsoon and characteristic temporal variations in the phytoplankton abundance and diversity indicated that the percentage of defaecating larvae (an indicator of food consumed) was comparatively higher during the pre-monsoon season. Generally this season is characterized by lower chlorophyll-a concentration. However, the average number of faecal pellets defaecated by a larva remained constant irrespective of the season. Earlier work in the study area depicts temporal changes in phytoplankton community structure; diatoms dominate during the post-monsoon season whereas dinoflagellates dominate during the pre-monsoon season. These observations indicate a possible shift in the food available for the larvae. As the faecal pellets did not always have remnants of diatom frustules, it is possible to say that the larvae survived on food material other than diatoms. Settlement of barnacles on panels of aluminium in the vicinity was monitored throughout the year and peaked during the pre-monsoon season. It is thus possible to infer successful larval development and metamorphosis in this barnacle species on varying forms of food.

During a survey of the Italian marine meiofauna, several specimens of the rare gastrotrich genus Xenodasys were found in a submarine cave along the Ionian coast of Apulia. The finding represents the first record of the genus for the Mediterranean Sea and reinforces the consideration of marine caves as habitats of high naturalistic value. The specimens, analysed using different microscopy techniques, showed a new species, named Xenodasys eknomios. Scanning electron microscopy, unveiling the astonishing morphology of this unusual gastrotrich, indicates that, due to technical artefacts, light microscopy may generate unreal features, which in the past may have led to the misinterpretation of the anatomical traits of these creatures. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that the ‘Seitenfüsschen’, are genuine elements of the adhesive apparatus, in contrast with previous investigation, which attributed an exclusive sensorial function to these organs. Confocal laser scanning microscopy, combined with actin-binding fluorochromes, revealed muscular elements in a region where originally the muscular chordoid organ was reported for gastrotrich species belonging to the genus Chordodasys. A taxonomic revision of the species currently allocated to the genus Xenodasys led to the establishment of Chordodasiopsis gen. nov. to integrate the former Xenodasys (=Chordodasys) antennatus and to the drafting of emended diagnosis of the genus Xenodasys. An overview of the high-rank systematization of these genera is also provided, with the establishment of Xenodasyidae fam. nov. to allocate both Xenodasys and Chordodasiopsis.

This study sheds light on the evolution of aquatic and terrestrial feeding modes in vertebrates, using two aquatic turtles as models. The estuarine aquatic diamondback turtle Malademys terrapin has a feeding mechanism that is similar to the basic feeding mechanism of terrestrial tetrapods (jaw gape cycles incorporate slow opening, fast opening, fast closing and slow closing phases). Strikes upon prey also involve neck extension and cycles of the forelimbs. Malademys terrapin modulate their feeding behaviour and jaw action in relation to the nature of the prey item. Mussels are approached by walking on the substratum, and limb cycles are of small amplitude during the strike. Crabs, whether encountered in mid-water or on the substratum, are approached by swimming, and the strikes partly produced by vigorous upstrokes of the forelimbs, that occur simultaneously with neck extension. Crabs are dangerous prey, and the turtles often strike with the gape already at maximum, minimizing the time needed to bite a limb or other part of the crab. The tongue is not involved in food capture, but has a major role in food manipulation and transport prior to swallowing. Although transport cycles are similar to ingestion cycles, ingestion and transport are easily separable in the species. Malademys terrapin exhibit great distension of the throat during the strike, but this does not appear to generate adequate suction to aid capture of hard-shelled prey; it is suggested that throat distension reduces pressures in front of the advancing snout, thus preventing pressure waves displacing or alerting prey. The pelagic marine turtle Dermodielys coriacea, which specializes in gelatinous prey, relies heavily on suction for ingestion, which overlaps considerably with transport.

A survey of the ecology of the octopus Eledone cirrhosa in Scottish waters is compiled from structured interviews with fishermen, records of occurrence in traps (for lobster and crab), and a research vessel survey. This species is widespread and common throughout the inshore waters covered by fishing activity (shoreline- 140 m) on bottom types ranging through rock, stones, sand and mud. It is caught in all months of the year but is especially common inshore in the summer (July-September) and further offshore on trawling grounds in October-December. The octopus is a normal and regular predator of large Crustacea (Hotnarus, Nephrops, Cancer) caught in commercial traps but gut contents yield little identifiable dietary remains.

The gametogenic cycle of Scrobicularia plana was studied in Mweeloon Bay (Galway, west coast of Ireland) over the periods of February to September 1996 and January to September 1997. Quantitative (reproductive indices and oocytes size) and qualitative (gonad developmental stages) analysis identified a broad annual breeding cycle, with one protracted spawning event occurring from May until September. Early gonad development had begun by January/February. Spawning animals were first recorded at the end of May and continued to mature throughout the summer. The decrease in temperature in September coincided with the end of the spawning season and gonad regression. Although the species is predominantly dioecious, one case of hermaphrodism was recorded. A female to male sex ratio of 1.1:1 was registered. Sexual maturity occurred at a shell length greater than 20 mm; the smallest individual undergoing sexual development had a shell length of 22.4 mm. The timing of the reproductive cycle in S. plana at Mweeloon Bay is in broad agreement with previous findings on the species carried out in northern latitudes.

Gorgona National Park (GNP) protects the only known feeding aggregation of juvenile green turtles Chelonia mydas on the Pacific coast of Colombia. This study was undertaken to compare the diet of the two known C. mydas morphotypes (black and yellow), and to determine availability, selectivity, and quality of food resources at GNP. Oesophageal lavages and isotopic analysis of epidermal tissue were performed on turtles captured between February and December 2012. Food quantity was estimated by determining per cent cover in quadrats randomly placed on the reefs. Food quality of algae species was estimated by proximate analysis. Food selection was estimated using Ivlev's electivity index, and the trophic level of sea turtles at GNP was calculated. A total of 30 black (mean = 63.9 cm SCL) and 47 yellow (mean = 54.3 cm SCL) morphotype turtles were lavaged. Eight invertebrate and nine algae food items were identified in oesophageal contents. The most frequently found and abundant items in lavages were terrestrial plants, plastic fibres, invertebrates and algae. A total of 27 items, including 15 algae species, were identified on the reefs, of which Cladophora sp. was selected by black turtles, and Hypnea pannosa and Dictyota sp. were selected by both morphotypes; the latter species had the highest protein and lipid content, and low lignin content. A trophic level of 3.5 for black and 3.4 for yellow turtles was calculated. No significant difference in diet between the two morphotypes could be determined through lavage or isotopic analysis.

Rocky banks (i.e. sea mountain-like structures rising from the sea bottom) are hard substrate habitats of high socio-economic value (e.g. for fishermen and divers) and ecological relevance as they often host unusually high density of fish. Here we tested whether the response of fish assemblages to protection (i.e. related to the presence of a Marine Protected Area (MPA)) in rocky banks is comparable with the response of rocky reefs dropping from the coast (hereafter called ‘coastal rocky substrates’), and whether there are differences between fish assemblages associated with protected and unprotected rocky banks. Fish assemblages were assessed in shallow and deep coastal rocky substrates, and in rocky banks, in unprotected and protected conditions at a Mediterranean MPA in north-east Sardinia in August 2007 and 2008. Whole fish assemblage structures (in terms of biomass) differed between protected and unprotected conditions in both study years. Fish assemblages at rocky banks, in addition, differed from those associated with coastal rocky substrates. Total fish biomass (summing contribution of all species) was higher under protected than unprotected condition in 2007, while species richness and total fish density did not demonstrate any significant change related to protection. The responses to protection displayed by the target species Epinephelus marginatus and Diplodus sargus were clear especially in terms of greater frequency of large-sized specimens in both study years. Biomass of E. marginatus in 2007 and density of D. sargus in 2007 and 2008 were significantly higher in protected than unprotected conditions, especially in protected rocky banks. This study emphasizes the ecological and socio-economic role of protection and the potential role of rocky banks within management/conservation programmes in the Mediterranean Sea.

In this paper we analysed size and shape differences of body (mantle and fins) and inferior beak of the squid Illex argentinus from two Patagonian inner-shelf spawning groups. A new method was developed to reconstruct three-dimensional coordinates based on the 2-D projection of the beak on a plane. Shape of the beak did not vary between groups, sexes and maturity condition of individuals. Also, no beak shape changes were observed through the ontogeny. In contrast, as larger and heavier squids were considered in shape analysis, body widened near the fin insertion, and fin area increased. Our results suggest that shape adaptations of I. argentinus through the ontogeny reflect modifications to optimize swimming performance rather than to increase gamete holding capacity.

A porphyrin pigment found in Asterias rubens has been re-examined and found to be protoporphyrin, and not haematoporphyrin as originally reported by MacMunn. The pigment was identified by spectroscopic and spectrophotometric observations as well as by chemical tests and the use of paper partition and column chromatography. The protoporphyrin is absent from the gut, gonads and digestive caeca, and is present only in' the leathery integument.

The porphyrin occurs in the integument as free protoporphyrin; a yield of 33-6 mg. of red crystalline protoporphyrin dimethyl ester was obtained from a sample of 5485 g. of Asterias integument.

The relative amounts of protoporphyrin in different coloured specimens of A. rubens were determined by a fluorimetric method. With four well-defined colour types the amount of porphyrin per gram of integument was found to decrease rapidly in the series: violet-brown, dark brown, red and pale.

Neither protoporphyrin nor a porphyrinogen was found in the soft parts of Chlamys opercularis or Mytilus edulis, the main food animals of Asterias in the Plymouth area. The exact source of the integumentary porphyrin in this starfish is therefore uncertain, ,but it is suggested that it may be derived from the chlorophyll pigments found in the digestive caeca.

The porphyrin does not contribute materially to the colour pattern of the animals, most of whose colour is carotenoid, and it is most likely that it is a by-product of excretion formed from chlorophyll.

Analyses have been made of some of the constituents of the coastal sea water and the river water, and the results have been correlated with the growth phases of some planktonic diatom species and littoral epiphytes, although for most species the sea-water temperature and light intensity were limiting factors.

The factor determining the death of an epiphytic diatom community in the littoral zone has been considered to be the air temperature in conjunction with desiccation and a summary of the limiting temperatures for each of the four substrata is given in Table 7. Table 10 is a summary of all the distribution and temperature records. The heat itself is not lethal in many cases but the desiccation of the epiphyte in the littoral zone is accelerated at higher temperatures. Diatoms in damp situations were found to occur at temperatures which in a dry site were limiting, and further work indicating the relationship between relative humidity and lethal temperatures is needed.

The ability of a diatom to survive depends upon the water-retaining ability of the substratum. Chalk and large algae favoured the growth of most solitary epiphytes, and filamentous epiphytes grew particularly well on algae except the filamentous Navicula, which were best suited by chalk. The Achnanthes blue-green community was most frequent on wood. Concrete makes a firm substratum and allows rapid growth in winter but it is easily dried and most diatoms on it are destroyed in the summer.

Four diatom genera (Fragilaria, Grammatophora, Biddulphia and Melosira) are able to exist in the epiphyte flora and the shore plankton and the term facultative epiphyte is suggested to describe the behaviour of at least some of the species of these genera.

The progress of the copepod Mytilicola intestinalis Steuer from obscurity in Mediterranean mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, to notoriety as the scourge of European blue mussels, M. edulis, has been well documented (e.g. Lauckner, 1983). However, a reputation as a pest in a commercially important species is not easily overturned and operators in the economic sphere must be expected to proceed with circumspection where their livelihoods are.at stake. In the UK, Parliamentary Orders still control the deposition and movements of seed shellfish in the attempt to contain the spread of the copepod.

Jaera nordmanni (Rathke) occurs abundantly beneath stones and algae in freshwater streams (McCartan & Slinn, 1953), brackish water pools (Naylor & Slinn, 1958), and estuaries (Naylor, Slinn & Spooner, 1961; Harvey, Jones & Naylor, 1973). The species is widely distributed and ranges from the Black and Mediterranean Seas south to the Azores, and north to the west coast of Scotland (Naylor, 1972). Three forms of J. nordmanni have been described (Lemercier, 1958, i960) of which only Jaera nordmanni nordica Lemercier has been recorded in Britain (Naylor, 1972; Jones & Fordy, 1973). The two other forms, Jaera nordmanni nordmanni Lemercier and Jaera nordmanni massiliensis Lemercier, have a more southerly distribution (Naylor, 1972), and can be separated from J. nordmanni nordica by differences in male sex characters (Lemercier, 1958, 1960; Jones & Fordy, 1973). Apart from some eco-physiological work (Naylor et al. 1961; Harvey et al. 1973) and a recent study with a scanning electron microscope (Jones & Fordy, 1973), little is known of the biology of J. nordmanni. The present paper reports on the breeding biology and seasonal population fluctuations of Jaera nordmanni nordica, and compares the results with a similar study on the members of the Jaera albifrons Leach group of species (Jones & Naylor, 1971) which are closely related to and often in competition with J. nordmanni.

Facilities for keeping marine fish for experimental purposes or for display to the public are usually run on either an open system with direct supplies of water from the sea, as in the Bergen Aquarium (Rollefsen, 1962), or on a mainly closed system in which the sea water is continually recirculated (Saeki, 1958). The pros and cons of each system are well known and have been discussed in the published papers of the 1960 1st International Congress of Aquarology held in Monaco (Comité Scientifique et Technique du Congrés International d'Aquariologie, 1962–63) and in the report of the ad hoc meeting in 1975 on design and practical operation of research aquarium systems held at Texel, The Netherlands (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, 1975). A combination of the two types of system is often used in research institutions and series of papers on sea-water aquarium designs and methods of operation have been collected by Clark & Clark (1964).

An in situ tagging technique for the long-spined sea urchin Diadema aff. antillarum, suitable for carrying out short and medium term ecological studies is described. It is a simple method in which external nylon tags are anchored in holes drilled through the urchin test. The technique was tested in the field and found to be effective for individuals of more than 20 mm test diameter in terms of survival and tag retention rates.

Observations are described upon the innervation of striated muscles, the innervation of the slime glands, and the subcutaneous innervation in the hagfish, Myxine glutinosa L. It is shown that the two types of striated muscle fibre receive different types of motor innervation. Presumed sensory endings are described from above the striated muscle fibres of the ventral part of the body, and are similar to those endings near to the dorsal root ganglia whichcan be traced to their cells of origin within the ganglia. It is suggested that these endings are proprioceptive in function. Other endings within the outer edge of the myosepta are described, which may possibly also have a proprioceptive function. A rich plexus of neurons is described upon the capsule of the slime glands, and these neurons, like those of the subcutaneous plexus, receive pericellular terminations from the axons of central cells. It is suggested that they are motor to smooth muscle fibres, in the slime-gland plexus being related to the expulsion of slime (together with the action of striated muscle fibres), and in the subcutaneous plexus playing some role in the control of the venous blood in the subcutaneous sinuses.
