The taxonomic relationship between the limpets Patella rustica (Mollusca: Archaeogastropoda) and P. piperata is unclear with controversy as to whether P. piperata should be given specific status. The problems stem from its similar morphology but different biogeographic range from P. rustica. Individuals from seven populations of P. rustica and three of P. piperata were analysed for a combination of morphological and genetical characters. Morphological analyses of shell shape and radular morphology revealed differences between species for radular length, higher in P. rustica than in P. piperata, and the shape of the pluricuspid teeth of the radula with a well-developed internal cusp in P. piperata but not in P. rustica. Electrophoretic results based on 11 allozyme loci, however, did not distinguish the two species clearly. The overall genetic identity value between the two was 0·861, a value which lies within the range for conspecific populations of other patellids. It is proposed that P. piperata on the basis of the genetic data obtained, may represent a subspecies of P. rustica that is in the process of diverging due to its geographic isolation.

The structure of the tentacular crown in a multitentaculate pogonophoran, Siphonobrachia ilyophora Nielsen, has been examined by light and electron microscopy. The fine structural organization of the tentacles is described and discussed in relation to the suggested functions for the tentacles in Pogonophora.

The correlation between settlement rate, cypris age and anatomical maturation on the ultrastructural level was studied in female cyprids of Lernaeodiscus porcellanae, a rhizocephalan parasite of the porcelain crab Petrolisthes cabrilloi. There is no settlement on crabs until the cyprids are at least 2–3 days old, and maximum settlement activity is only reached 5 days after the moult from nauplius to cyprid (at 15 °C). Thereafter the settlement rate decreases again, possibly due to depletion of energy reserves in the non-feeding cyprids. Ultrastructural investigations show that the female cyprids cannot metamorphose into a kentrogon until 2–3 days after the moult from nauplius to cyprid, which explains the absence of settlement in young cyprids. Competence to metamorphose depends on changes in the cement glands, the epidermis and the antennules. The cypris moult cycle is arrested at an early stage and moult activity is only resumed after settlement. This ensures that the cyprids will not initiate metamorphosis while free-swimming.

Evidence of sexual dimorphism in the mud-shrimp Upogebia stellata was observed in the abdomen length, total length, and also in the chelae. For the same carapace length, males had a shorter abdomen and, therefore, total length, whilst their chelae were larger and more robust than the females. Of the 91 U. stellata individuals examined, a single specimen was found to be of an intersex type, i.e. it exhibited both male and female external characteristics. Sexual dimorphism and intersexuality are discussed.

Since the early part of the 20th Century the impact of a range of anthropogenic activities in our coastal seas has steadily increased. The effect of such activities is a major cause for concern but in the benthic environment few studies exist that date back more than a few decades. Hence understanding long term changes is a challenge. Within this study we utilized a historic benthic dataset and resurveyed an area west of Eddystone reef in the English Channel previously investigated 112 years ago. The aim of the present work was to describe the current benthic community structure and investigate potential differences between 1895 and 2007. For each of the four major phyla investigated (Polychaeta, Crustacea, Mollusca and Echinodermata), multivariate community analysis showed significant differences between the historic and contemporary surveys. Echinoderm diversity showed a clear reduction between 1895 and 2007. The sea urchins Echinus esculentus, Spatangus purpureus, and Psammechinus miliaris and large star-fish Marthasterias glacialis showed reductions in abundance, in some cases being entirely absent from the survey area in 2007. Polychaetes showed a shift from tubiculous species to small errant and predatory species such as Glycera, Nephtys, and Lumbrineris spp. Within the group Mollusca large species such as Pecten maximus and Laevicardium crassum decreased in abundance while small species increased. Crustaceans in 1895 were dominated by crab species which were present in similar abundances in 2007, but, the order Amphipoda appeared to show a significant increase. While some of the differences observed could stem from differences in methodologies between the surveys, in particular increases of small cryptic species, the loss of large conspicuous species was judged to be genuine. The study area is an important beam trawling and scallop dredging ground; the differences observed are concomitant with changes generally associated with disturbance from demersal fishing activities such as these.

Sea turtles host a diverse array of epibionts, yet it is not well understood what factors influence epibiont community composition. To test whether epibiont communities of sea turtles are influenced by the hosts’ nesting or foraging habitats, we characterized the epibiota of leatherback, olive ridley and green turtles nesting at a single location on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. We also compared the epibiota of these turtles to conspecific populations nesting elsewhere in the East Pacific. If epibiont communities are influenced by nesting habitats, we predicted that sympatrically nesting turtles would have comparable epibiont taxa. Alternatively, if epibiont communities are influenced by foraging habitats, we predicted the diversity of epibiont taxa should reflect the type and diversity of the hosts’ foraging habitats. We identified 18 epibiont taxa from 18 leatherback, 19 olive ridley and six green turtles. Epibiont diversity was low on leatherbacks (four taxa), but higher for olive ridley and green turtles (12 and nine epibiont taxa respectively). The epibiont communities of olive ridley and green turtles were not statistically different, but both were different from leatherbacks. In addition, conspecific sea turtles from other nesting locations hosted more similar epibiont communities than sympatrically nesting, non-conspecifics. We conclude that epibiont diversity of nesting sea turtles is partially linked to the diversity of their foraging habitats. We also conclude that the surface properties of the skin and carapace of these turtles may contribute to the uniqueness of leatherback turtle epibiont communities and the similarities between olive ridley and green turtle epibiont communities.

Throughout lactation, pups of pinnipeds regularly vocalize, including during interactions with their mother. In all studied species of otariids and in some phocids, these calls exhibit sufficient acoustic variation for individual recognition. As female grey seals Halichoerus grypus (Pinnipedia: Phocidae) often pup in dense colonies, and regularly leave their offspring alone to go to sea, the selective pressure for mutual vocal recognition between mothers and pups could be high. To investigate call variation in pups of this species, 170 calls of ten individual pups were analysed. Out of seven acoustic features studied, location of maximum signal strength, the number of harmonics and the frequency and strength of the fundamental show the highest individuality. However, the apparent infrequent use of pup calls during mother-pup reunions suggests that vocal signals may not play the major role in pup discrimination by female grey seals, as observed in other phocids which females do not vocalize to their pup.

Natural marks occurring in cetaceans are used to measure population parameters, social structure and movements. However, the changeable nature of these marks can originate bias in these estimates. The aim of this work was to calculate abundance and prevalence of 28 mark types observed in common minke whales and white-beaked dolphins photographed in Icelandic waters for 11 years (2002–2013) in order to identify reliable markings which could be suitable for capture-mark-recapture studies. In the common minke whale subsample the most prevalent occurring marks were cookie-cutter shark bite, notch and lamprey bite, and herpes-like lesions and blisters were the most abundant. White-beaked dolphins had notch, fin patches and fine scrape as the most prevalent, and black mark and fine scrape were the most abundant. Loss and gain rates were also estimated resulting in eight mark types with no losses in common minke whales including fin outline and injury marks. In white-beaked dolphins there were 13 mark types with null loss rate among which there were notch, distinct notch and amputation. Our findings confirm that fin and injury marks are among the most accurate features to use for capture-mark-recapture studies as noted for other cetacean species. We also suggest including cookie-cutter shark bites for common minke whales and fin patches for white-beaked dolphins due to their low loss rate. These two mark types were amongst the most prevalent in both species, so their addition will be pivotal in increasing the power of analysis conducted using photo-identification data obtaining more accurate population estimates.

The production of tubes by the serpulid polychaete Mercierella enigmatica is compared with somatic growth and reproduction, and is shown to account for the greatest portion of production energy expenditure.

INTRODUCTION

The tube of a serpulid polychaete consists of two major fractions, a conspicuous calcareous component comprising small crystals of aragonite or calcite, and a more diffuse organic matrix (Hedley, 1956; Neff; 1971). The continuity of the organic matrix was demonstrated by Hedley (1956), who showed that careful decalcifkation failed to disturb the form of the tube of Pomatoceros triqueter (L.).

The serpulid Mercierella enigmatica Fauvel (Ficopomatus enigmaticus cf. ten Hove & Weerdenburg, 1978) secretes a hard, calcareous tube shortly after it settles from the plankton (Rullier, 1955; Vuillemin, 1965). Initially, tube growth is relatively fast, but as the tube increases in length so the rate of growth declines. However, the tube of the adult worm can be as much as 80 mm in length, or more than four times the length of its body.

During a study based on catches taken in the northern North Sea by selected Scottish fishing boats during 1985–1992, large numbers of the normally rare short-fin squid, Todaropsis eblanae (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae), were recorded in 1987 and 1990. Our findings, supported by data obtained from plankton/young fish surveys in 1988 and 1989, suggest that in northern waters Todaropsis eblanae generally mates and spawns during late summer and early autumn (June-November). Successful hatching events appear to occur during October-March, producing juvenile (stage I) squid in the early part of the year (January-June). Estimations of maximum male reproductive output and female fecundity were up to 130 spermatophores and ~28,000 eggs per individual, respectively.

While it is generally assumed that jellyfishes (Cnidaria: Scyphozoa) are stably tetramerous, variation in symmetry (i.e. unimerous to octamerous) can be observed in most populations at a rate of approximately 2%, but sometimes as high as 10%. This type of variation has been observed among clonemates during strobilation in five taxa, namely Aurelia aurita, A. labiata, Chrysaora fuscescens, Pelagia colorata, and Phacellophora camtschatica. It is currently unclear whether the symmetry variation is caused by genetic, environmental, or developmental factors, or some combination. Although hexamerous lineages were not bred successfully, lineages were raised with rates of variation higher than normal. Thus, there may be some genetic component to the variation. In one lineage observed over 4.5 months, the rate of non-tetramery declined substantially from an initial high of 88.9% to a final cumulative low of 29%. Apparently this lineage was able to stabilize tetramery over time, possibly indicating some self-correcting developmental mechanism. Furthermore, no difference was found in variation rates between stressed and unstressed polyps, indicating that environmental factors may not play an important role in symmetry determination in these animals. These results indicate stabilizing selection in controlling the expression of variable symmetry.

The north-east Atlantic grey seal, Halichoerus grypus, is widely distributed along the European coastline from northern Russia to France, with the core population centred around Scotland. To date, very little is known of the diet of the species at the southern margin of the species range. However, because grey seal numbers have been increasing over the last few decades in France, the issue of their potential interactions with coastal fisheries is frequently raised. The diet of grey seal in the Molène Archipelago was investigated by combining scat, stomach content and fatty acid analyses, since all three approaches have complementary potentials to reveal feeding habits of a predator. A total of 145 scats mostly of moulting adult males, 14 stomach contents of yearlings and 14 blubber samples from animals of all ages were analysed following standard methodologies. Scats revealed a diet mainly constituted of 50.6% by mass (M) of wrasse, Labridae (mostly Labrus bergylta), 20.7%M conger eel, Conger conger, and 11.9%M sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax. Stomach contents were made up of 52.3%M cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, 9.5%M sole, Solea solea, and 9.4 %M conger eel. All these prey are different from the diet observed in core areas. Fatty acid analysis from the blubber confirmed that the diet differed between the Molène Archipelago and one of the Scottish breeding sites. It also showed that most of the inter-individual variability was explained by variation in seal body masses, which could be linked to behavioural ontogeny of foraging strategies. Most of the prey species identified in the food of the grey seal in Brittany are also targeted by professional and/or recreational fisheries in the area; additionally, several prey size-ranges also partly overlap with marketed size-ranges for several species.

Qualitative composition and abundance of both ichthyoplankton and small forms of zooplankton were evaluated by field studies in the northern (the Crimea near Sevastopol) and southern (Sinop region and TEEZ) Black Sea during the summers 2000 and 2001. A tendency of increasing the species richness, abundance of fish eggs and larvae as well as zooplankton (which is the food for fish larvae) was observed over a period of Mnemiopsis leidyi and Beroe ovata co-existence. The eggs and larvae of the Mediterranean migrants—bonito and bluefish appeared again in the coastal waters near Sevastopol, which testified to favourable conditions for the spawning and nutrition of these fish species and their larvae. Aborigen copepod Oithona nana was found in the Crimean coastal waters although earlier in the 1990s it had completely vanished. Although rare in the 1990s copepods Centropages ponticus and Paracalanus parvus appeared in inshore waters as well as Pontellids species. Observed increases in species number and abundance of both ichthyoplankton and small zooplankton (≤500 μm), which promoted survival and development of fish larvae, were attributed to reduced predatory impact of Mnemiopsis on prey zooplankton after the arrival of Beroe in the late 1990s. However, the influence of Mnemiopsis continued to be significant during the short period of its peak occurrence in late summer. When this period coincided with the appearance of fish larvae, a negative impact on their survival could be predicted due to a low concentration of food items for larvae feeding.

The distribution of larvae of sprat (Sprattus sprattus) is described in relation to feeding conditions in the Irish Sea. Larvae were most abundant towards the coastal margins. Relatively few were taken in the mixed water of the central Irish Sea. Preferred food organisms were also more abundant in coastal regions. Both sprat eggs and larvae, and microplankton, were more dispersed down the water column when it was fully mixed than when stratified. Characterization of food availability for larvae, as peak (modal) abundance down the water-column, is shown to be related to the degree of stratification.

Diel vertical migration (DVM) and in situ feeding of Thalia democratica (Tunicata: Thaliacea) was studied in the field (Agulhas Bank, South Africa) over a 48 h period in March 1994. Thalia democratica did not display DVM, and both aggregates and solitaires were mostly confined to the upper layers of the water column throughout the study period. Thalia democratica did not display any discernible diel feeding rhythm, and pigment content increased with salp size. Individuals with greatest pigment content were found at the chlorophyll maximum. Estimates of grazing impact varied with salp abundance and gut passage time, ranging from less than 1% to greater than 100% of phytoplankton productivity.

The regulation of major ions in aquatic Crustacea has been extensively studied, and it is hardly surprising that ever-present ionic constituents of sea water such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium have been incorporated into highly efficient regulatory mechanisms. On the other hand, we know little of the mechanisms governing the uptake and regulation of trace elements, despite the fact that metals such as zinc and copper may be important constituents of enzymes and blood pigment.

The work reported in this paper forms part of a programme of investigation into the normal parameters of radiosensitive tissues in the plaice. The work was conducted prior to investigations into the effectsof ionizing radiations on these tissues, in order to form a backgroundto examinations of fish from areas of radioactive pollution resulting from the controlled disposal of radioactive effluent. Tissues were selected on the basis of known radiosensitive tissues in mammals and the work on red blood values reported here arose from these preliminary investigations.

In 1892 Cunningham described a new species of Siphonophore, Muggiœa atlantica, which was first noticed by him in the waters of the English Channel off Plymouth in the autumn of 1891. Since then there have been records from time to time of the occurrence of this species at Plymouth (see Plymouth Marine Fauna, 1931, p. 84), and its distribution in the English Channel and Irish Sea in 1904 was worked out by Gough (1905).

An apparatus has been developed which allows the complete replacement of interstitial water in sediments without disturbance. In principle, it can be adapted to handle sand or mud, different solutions, and different volumes of sediment. The apparatus was tested with 0·05% (wt/vol.) eosin in sea water. After replacement of the interstitial water, the eosin was evenly distributed throughout the sediment. Interstitial water in samples of sediment was replaced by sulphide solutions in sea water, at a range of concentrations. The responses of Corophium volutator to these sediments was tested in choice and non-choice experiments. In the choice experiments, animals avoided burrowing in sediments containing sulphide at concentrations greater than about 5·8 × 10−5M. In the non-choice experiments, animals were progressively inhibited from burrowing when the sediment sulphide concentration was greater than about 5·8 × 10−4M. No mortality occurred during the experiments.

Several hydroid species have an epibiontic lifestyle, living associated with organisms of many different phyla. On the other hand, hydroids can also host dense assemblages of microflora and microfauna, mainly composed of protists and bacteria. Among protists, diatoms are the most abundant and diversified group, followed by foraminifera and sessile ciliata such as Vorticella and suctorians. Regarding the spatial distribution of epibionts, hydroid colonies represent a mosaic of different microhabitats: in some species, each colony portion (base of the stem, branches, pedicels, inner space between the polyp and the theca) hosts different diatom species. Moreover, three foram species have been shown to occupy different positions according to the plasticity of their shell. A host specificity has been also observed: some epibionts are typical of only one or a group of species, such as Vorticella living on the teeth of the Aglaophenia thecae or coralline algae that cover mainly Aglaophenia and Sertularella colonies. The microassemblage associated to Eudendrium racemosum showed a typical seasonal cycle and a vertical distribution which reflects the selective advantage of the different life forms. Experiments with plastic structures miming hydroid colonies demonstrated that the living hydroid affects the assemblage structure. Probably, the perisarc composition and secondary metabolites play a crucial role in the relationships between hydroids and their microassemblage.
