Let R be a complete rank-1 valuation ring of mixed characteristic (0, p), and let K be its field of fractions. A g-dimensional truncated Barsotti–Tate group G of level n over R is said to have a level-n canonical subgroup if there is a K-subgroup of G ⊗RK with geometric structure (Z/pnZ)g consisting of points ‘closest to zero’. We give a non-trivial condition on the Hasse invariant of G that guarantees the existence of the canonical subgroup, analogous to a result of Katz and Lubin for elliptic curves. The bound is independent of the height and dimension of G.

Let C be a proper smooth geometrically connected hyperbolic curve over a field of characteristic 0 and ℓ a prime number. We prove the injectivity of the homomorphism from the pro-ℓ mapping class group attached to the two dimensional configuration space of C to the one attached to C, induced by the natural projection. We also prove a certain graded Lie algebra version of this injectivity. Consequently, we show that the kernel of the outer Galois representation on the pro-ℓ pure braid group on C with n strings does not depend on n, even if n = 1. This extends a previous result by Ihara–Kaneko. By applying these results to the universal family over the moduli space of curves, we solve completely Oda's problem on the independency of certain towers of (infinite) algebraic number fields, which has been studied by Ihara, Matsumoto, Nakamura, Ueno and the author. Sequentially we obtain certain information of the image of this Galois representation and get obstructions to the surjectivity of the Johnson–Morita homomorphism at each sufficiently large even degree (as Oda predicts), for the first time for a proper curve.

We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for essentially conjugate self-dual Galois representations into GLn. Existing theorems require that the residual representation have ‘big’ image, in a certain technical sense. Our theorems are based on a strengthening of the Taylor–Wiles method which allows one to weaken this hypothesis.

In the paper ‘Bruhat–Tits theory from Berkovich's point of view. I. Realizations and compactifications of buildings’, we investigated various realizations of the Bruhat–Tits building of a connected and reductive linear algebraic group G over a non-Archimedean field k in the framework of Berkovich's non-Archimedean analytic geometry. We studied in detail the compactifications of the building which naturally arise from this point of view. In the present paper, we give a representation theoretic flavour to these compactifications, following Satake's original constructions for Riemannian symmetric spaces.

We first prove that Berkovich compactifications of a building coincide with the compactifications, previously introduced by the third named author and obtained by a gluing procedure. Then we show how to recover them from an absolutely irreducible linear representation of G by embedding in the building of the general linear group of the representation space, compactified in a suitable way. Existence of such an embedding is a special case of Landvogt's general results on functoriality of buildings, but we also give another natural construction of an equivariant embedding, which relies decisively on Berkovich geometry.

We introduce C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and concrete Hopf C*-bimodules for the study of quantum groupoids in the setting of C*-algebras. These unitaries and Hopf C*-bimodules generalize multiplicative unitaries and Hopf C*-algebras and are analogues of the pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and Hopf–von Neumann-bimodules studied by Enock, Lesieur and Vallin. To each C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitary, we associate two Fourier algebras with a duality pairing and in the regular case two Hopf C*-bimodules. The theory is illustrated by examples related to locally compact Hausdorff groupoids. In particular, we obtain a continuous Fourier algebra for a locally compact Hausdorff groupoid.
