We establish the inductive blockwise Alperin weight condition for simple groups of Lie type $\mathsf C$ and the bad prime $2$ . As a main step, we derive a labelling set for the irreducible $2$ -Brauer characters of the finite symplectic groups $\operatorname {Sp}_{2n}(q)$ (with odd q), together with the action of automorphisms. As a further important ingredient, we prove a Jordan decomposition for weights.

Let $H^\infty ({\mathbb {D}}\times {\mathbb {N}})$ be the Banach algebra of bounded holomorphic functions defined on the disjoint union of countably many copies of the open unit disk ${\mathbb {D}}\subset {{\mathbb C}}$ . We show that the dense stable rank of $H^\infty ({\mathbb {D}}\times {\mathbb {N}})$ is $1$ and, using this fact, prove some nonlinear Runge-type approximation theorems for $H^\infty ({\mathbb {D}}\times {\mathbb {N}})$ maps. Then we apply these results to obtain a priori uniform estimates of norms of approximating maps in similar approximation problems for the algebra $H^\infty ({\mathbb {D}})$ .

We show that if w is a multilinear commutator word and G a finite group in which every metanilpotent subgroup generated by w-values is of rank at most r, then the rank of the verbal subgroup $w(G)$ is bounded in terms of r and w only. In the case where G is soluble, we obtain a better result: if G is a finite soluble group in which every nilpotent subgroup generated by w-values is of rank at most r, then the rank of $w(G)$ is at most $r+1$ .

For numerical semigroups with a specified list of (not necessarily minimal) generators, we describe the asymptotic distribution of factorization lengths with respect to an arbitrary modulus. In particular, we prove that the factorization lengths are equidistributed across all congruence classes that are not trivially ruled out by modular considerations.

We introduce certain $C^*$ -algebras and k-graphs associated to k finite-dimensional unitary representations $\rho _1,\ldots ,\rho _k$ of a compact group G. We define a higher rank Doplicher-Roberts algebra $\mathcal {O}_{\rho _1,\ldots ,\rho _k}$ , constructed from intertwiners of tensor powers of these representations. Under certain conditions, we show that this $C^*$ -algebra is isomorphic to a corner in the $C^*$ -algebra of a row-finite rank k graph $\Lambda $ with no sources. For G finite and $\rho _i$ faithful of dimension at least two, this graph is irreducible, it has vertices $\hat {G}$ and the edges are determined by k commuting matrices obtained from the character table of the group. We illustrate this with some examples when $\mathcal {O}_{\rho _1,\ldots ,\rho _k}$ is simple and purely infinite, and with some K-theory computations.

A graph is edge-primitive if its automorphism group acts primitively on the edge set, and $2$ -arc-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on the set of $2$ -arcs. In this paper, we present a classification for those edge-primitive graphs that are $2$ -arc-transitive and have soluble edge-stabilizers.

We obtain an effective analytic formula, with explicit constants, for the number of distinct irreducible factors of a polynomial $f \in \mathbb {Z}[x]$ . We use an explicit version of Mertens’ theorem for number fields to estimate a related sum over rational primes. For a given $f \in \mathbb {Z}[x]$ , our result yields a finite list of primes that certifies the number of distinct irreducible factors of f.

Let $G/K$ be an irreducible symmetric space, where G is a noncompact, connected Lie group and K is a compact, connected subgroup. We use decay properties of the spherical functions to show that the convolution product of any $r=r(G/K)$ continuous orbital measures has its density function in $L^{2}(G)$ and hence is an absolutely continuous measure with respect to the Haar measure. The number r is approximately the rank of $G/K$ . For the special case of the orbital measures, $\nu _{a_{i}}$ , supported on the double cosets $Ka_{i}K$ , where $a_{i}$ belongs to the dense set of regular elements, we prove the sharp result that $\nu _{a_{1}}\ast \nu _{a_{2}}\in L^{2},$ except for the symmetric space of Cartan class $AI$ when the convolution of three orbital measures is needed (even though $\nu _{a_{1}}\ast \nu _{a_{2}}$ is absolutely continuous).

In this paper we study boundedness and compactness characterizations of the commutators of Cauchy type integrals on bounded strongly pseudoconvex domains D in $\mathbb C^{n}$ with boundaries $bD$ satisfying the minimum regularity condition $C^{2}$ , based on the recent results of Lanzani–Stein and Duong et al. We point out that in this setting the Cauchy type integral is the sum of the essential part which is a Calderón–Zygmund operator and a remainder which is no longer a Calderón–Zygmund operator. We show that the commutator is bounded on the weighted Morrey space $L_{v}^{p,\kappa }(bD)$ ( $v\in A_{p}, 1<p<\infty $ ) if and only if b is in the BMO space on $bD$ . Moreover, the commutator is compact on the weighted Morrey space $L_{v}^{p,\kappa }(bD)$ ( $v\in A_{p}, 1<p<\infty $ ) if and only if b is in the VMO space on $bD$ .

This paper is concerned with the growth rate of the product of consecutive partial quotients relative to the denominator of the convergent for the continued fraction expansion of an irrational number. More precisely, given a natural number $m,$ we determine the Hausdorff dimension of the following set:

where $\tau $ is a nonnegative number. This extends the dimensional result of Dirichlet nonimprovable sets (when $m=1$ ) shown by Hussain, Kleinbock, Wadleigh and Wang.

Let u and $\varphi $ be two analytic functions on the unit disk D such that $\varphi (D) \subset D$ . A weighted composition operator $uC_{\varphi }$ induced by u and $\varphi $ is defined on $A^2_{\alpha }$ , the weighted Bergman space of D, by $uC_{\varphi }f := u \cdot f \circ \varphi $ for every $f \in A^2_{\alpha }$ . We obtain sufficient conditions for the compactness of $uC_{\varphi }$ in terms of function-theoretic properties of u and $\varphi $ . We also characterize when $uC_{\varphi }$ on $A^2_{\alpha }$ is Hilbert–Schmidt. In particular, the characterization is independent of $\alpha $ when $\varphi $ is an automorphism of D. Furthermore, we investigate the Hilbert–Schmidt difference of two weighted composition operators on $A^2_{\alpha }$ .

Let $G(n)={\textrm {Sp}}(n,1)$ or ${\textrm {SU}}(n,1)$ . We classify conjugation orbits of generic pairs of loxodromic elements in $G(n)$ . Such pairs, called ‘nonsingular’, were introduced by Gongopadhyay and Parsad for ${\textrm {SU}}(3,1)$ . We extend this notion and classify $G(n)$ -conjugation orbits of such elements in arbitrary dimension. For $n=3$ , they give a subspace that can be parametrized using a set of coordinates whose local dimension equals the dimension of the underlying group. We further construct twist-bend parameters to glue such representations and obtain local parametrization for generic representations of the fundamental group of a closed (genus $g \geq 2$ ) oriented surface into $G(3)$ .

We show that, given a compact minimal system $(X,g)$ and an element h of the topological full group $\tau [g]$ of g, the infinite orbits of h admit a locally constant orientation with respect to the orbits of g. We use this to obtain a clopen partition of $(X,G)$ into minimal and periodic parts, where G is any virtually polycyclic subgroup of $\tau [g]$ . We also use the orientation of orbits to give a refinement of the index map and to describe the role in $\tau [g]$ of the submonoid generated by the induced transformations of g. Finally, we consider the problem, given a homeomorphism h of the Cantor space X, of determining whether or not there exists a minimal homeomorphism g of X such that $h \in \tau [g]$ .

A noncomplete graph is $2$ -distance-transitive if, for $i \in \{1,2\}$ and for any two vertex pairs $(u_1,v_1)$ and $(u_2,v_2)$ with the same distance i in the graph, there exists an element of the graph automorphism group that maps $(u_1,v_1)$ to $(u_2,v_2)$ . This paper determines the family of $2$ -distance-transitive Cayley graphs over dihedral groups, and it is shown that if the girth of such a graph is not $4$ , then either it is a known $2$ -arc-transitive graph or it is isomorphic to one of the following two graphs: $ {\mathrm {K}}_{x[y]}$ , where $x\geq 3,y\geq 2$ , and $G(2,p,({p-1})/{4})$ , where p is a prime and $p \equiv 1 \ (\operatorname {mod}\, 8)$ . Then, as an application of the above result, a complete classification is achieved of the family of $2$ -geodesic-transitive Cayley graphs for dihedral groups.

In this paper we obtain some improved $L^p$ -Hardy and $L^p$ -Rellich inequalities on bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds. For Cartan–Hadamard manifolds we prove the inequalities with sharp constants and with weights being hyperbolic functions of the Riemannian distance.

For a given inverse semigroup, one can associate an étale groupoid which is called the universal groupoid. Our motivation is studying the relation between inverse semigroups and associated étale groupoids. In this paper, we focus on congruences of inverse semigroups, which is a fundamental concept for considering quotients of inverse semigroups. We prove that a congruence of an inverse semigroup induces a closed invariant set and a normal subgroupoid of the universal groupoid. Then we show that the universal groupoid associated to a quotient inverse semigroup is described by the restriction and quotient of the original universal groupoid. Finally we compute invariant sets and normal subgroupoids induced by special congruences including abelianization.

Taking residual finiteness as a starting point, we consider three related finiteness properties: weak subsemigroup separability, strong subsemigroup separability and complete separability. We investigate whether each of these properties is inherited by Schützenberger groups. The main result of this paper states that for a finitely generated commutative semigroup S, these three separability conditions coincide and are equivalent to every $\mathcal {H}$ -class of S being finite. We also provide examples to show that these properties in general differ for commutative semigroups and finitely generated semigroups. For a semigroup with finitely many $\mathcal {H}$ -classes, we investigate whether it has one of these properties if and only if all its Schützenberger groups have the property.

In this paper, we define a family of functionals generalizing the Yang–Mills–Higgs functionals on a closed Riemannian manifold. Then we prove the short-time existence of the corresponding gradient flow by a gauge-fixing technique. The lack of a maximum principle for the higher order operator brings us a lot of inconvenience during the estimates for the Higgs field. We observe that the $L^2$ -bound of the Higgs field is enough for energy estimates in four dimensions and we show that, provided the order of derivatives appearing in the higher order Yang–Mills–Higgs functionals is strictly greater than one, solutions to the gradient flow do not hit any finite-time singularities. As for the Yang–Mills–Higgs k-functional with Higgs self-interaction, we show that, provided $\dim (M)<2(k+1)$ , for every smooth initial data the associated gradient flow admits long-time existence. The proof depends on local $L^2$ -derivative estimates, energy estimates and blow-up analysis.
