A unital C*-algebra A is called extremally rich if the set of quasi-invertible elements A-1 ex (A)A-1 (= A-1q) is dense in A, where ex(A) is the set of extreme points in the closed unit ball A1 of A. In [7, 8] Brown and Pedersen introduced this notion and showed that A is extremally rich if and only if conv(ex(A)) = A1. Any unital simple C*-algebra with extremal richness is either purely infinite or has stable rank one (sr(A) = 1). In this note we investigate the extremal richness of C*-crossed products of extremally rich C*-algebras by finite groups. It is shown that if A is purely infinite simple and unital then A xα, G is extremally rich for any finite group G. But this is not true in general when G is an infinite discrete group. If A is simple with sr(A) =, and has the SP-property, then it is shown that any crossed product A xαG by a finite abelian group G has cancellation. Moreover if this crossed product has real rank zero, it has stable rank one and hence is extremally rich.

If P is a partially ordered set and R is a commutative ring, then a certain differential graded R-algebra A•(P) is defined from the order relation on P. The algebra A•() corresponding to the empty poset is always contained in A•(P) so that A•(P) can be regarded as an A•()-algebra. The main result of this paper shows that if R is an integral domain and P and P′ are finite posets such that A•(P)≅A•(P′) as differential graded A•()-algebras, then P and P′ are isomorphic.

This paper has a twofold purpose. The first is to compute the Euler characteristics of hyperbolic Coxeter groups Ws of level 1 or 2 by a mixture of theoretical and computer aided methods. For groups of level 1 and odd values of |S|, the Euler characteristic is related to the volume of the fundamental region of Ws in hyperbolic space. Secondly we note two methods of imbedding such groups in each other. This reduces the amount of computation needed to determine the Euler characteristics and also reduces the number of essentially different hyperbolic groups that need to be considered.

Let be a homogeneous tree of degree at least three. In this paper we investigate for which values of p and r the (σθ)-Poisson semigroup is Lp – Lr,-bounded, and we sharp estimate for the corresponding operator norms.

A characterization of all special atoms in the from of the upper radical generated by the class of all prime rings outside the smallest special class containing some prime ring is provided and prime rings for which the above mentioned upper radical coincides with the prime radical are investigated.

Let R be a prime ring of characteristic not 2. Automorphisms α and β of R satisfying α ≠ β, α ≠ β−1, and α + α−1 = β + β-1 are characterized. This result is an algebraic analogue of some results for operator algebras.

In this paper a large family of dominant Fitting classes of finite soluble groups and the description of the corresponding injectors are obtained. Classical constructions of nilpotent and Lockett injectors as well as p-nilpotent injectors arise as particular cases.

We introduce a sequence of polynomials which are extensions of the classic Bernoulli polynomials. This generalization is obtained by using the Bessel functions of the first kind. We use these polynomials to evaluate explicitly a general class of series containing an entire function of exponential type.

The aim of this paper is to explore some properties of quasiuniform multifunction spaces. Various kinds of completeness of the quasiuniform multifunction space (YmX, UmX) are characterized in terms of suitable properties of the range space (Y, U). We also discuss the local compactness of quasiuniform multifunction spaces. By using the notion of small-set symmetry, the classic result of Hunsaker and Naimpally is extended to the quasiuniform setting.

The theory of isogeny estimates for Abelian varieties provides ‘additive bounds’ of the form ‘d is at most B’ for the degrees d of certain isogenies. We investigate whether these can be improved to ‘multiplicative bounds’ of the form ‘d divides B’. We find that in general the answer is no (Theorem 1), but that sometimes the answer is yes (Theorem 2). Further we apply the affirmative result to the study of exceptional primes ℒ in connexion with modular Galois representations coming from elliptic curves: we prove that the additive bounds for ℒ of Masser and Wüstholz (1993) can be improved to multiplicative bounds (Theorem 3).

Xiong proved that if f: I → I is any map of the unit interval I, then the depth of the centre of f is at most 2, and Ye proved that for any map f: T → T of a finite tree T, the depth of the centre of f is at most 3. It is natural to ask whether the result can be dendrites. In this note, we show that there is dendrite D such that for any countable ordinal number λ there is a map f: D →D such that the depth of centre of f is λ. As a corollary, we show that for any countable ordinal number λ there is a map (respectively a homeomorphism) f of a 2-dimensional ball B2 (respectively a 3-dimensional ball B3) such that the depth of centre of f is λ.

Let pα,θ be the Linnik density, that is, the probability density with the characteristic function . The following problem is studied: Let (α θ), (β, ϑ) be two point of PD. When is it possible to represent β,ϑ as a scale mixture of pαθ? A subset of the admissible pairs (α, θ), (β, ϑ) is described.

We outline the classification, up to isometry, of all tetrahedra in hyperbolic space with one or more vertices truncated, for which the dihedral angles along the edges formed by the truncations are all π/2, and those remaining are all submultiples of π. We show how to find the volumes of these polyhedra, and find presentations and small generating sets for the orientation-preserving subgroups of their reflection groups.

For particular families of these groups, we find low index torsion free subgroups, and construct associated manifolds and manifolds with boundary. In particular, for each g ≥ 2, we find a sequence of hyperbolic manifolds with totally geodesic boundary of genus g, which we conjecture to be of least volume among such manifolds.

Some properties of the singular ideal are established. In particular its behaviour when passing to one-sided ideals is studied. Obtained results are applied to study some radicals related to the singular ideal. In particular a radical S such that for every ring R, S(R) and R/S(R) are close to being a singular ring and a non-singular ring, respectively, is constructed.

It has been observed by a number of researches that although it is well-known that all continuous functions defined on C-compact spaces are closed functions, this property does not characterize C-compact spaces. In this note we employ the notion of strongly subclosed relations to prove that a space is C-compact if and only if all functions on it with strongly subclosed inverses are closed functions.

Some new oscillation criteria for higher order neutral functional differential equations of the form n is even, are established.

A probabilistic convergence structure assigns a probability that a given filter converges to a given element of the space. The role of the t-norm (triangle norm) in the study of regularity of probabilistic convergence spaces is investigated. Given a probabilistic convergence space, there exists a finest T-regular space which is coarser than the given space, and is referred to as the ‘T-regular modification’. Moreover, for each probabilistic convergence space, there is a sequence of spaces, indexed by nonnegative ordinals, whose first term is the given space and whose last term is its T-regular modification. The T-regular modification is illustrated in the example involving ‘convergence with probability λ’ for several t-norms. Suitable function space structures in terms of a given t-norm are also considered.

Let K be a nonarchimedean local field, let L be a separable quadratic extension of K, and let h denote a nondegenerate sesquilinear formk on L3. The Bruhat-Tits building associated with SU3(h) is a tree. This is applied to the study of certain groups acting simply transitively on vertices of the building associated with SL(3, F), F = Q3 or F3((X)).

There is a substantial theory (modelled on permutation representations of groups) of representations of an inverse semigroup S in a symmetric inverse monoid Ix, that is, a monoid of partial one-to-one selfmaps of a set X. The present paper describes the structure of a categorical dual Ix* to the symmetric inverse monoid and discusses representations of an inverse semigroup in this dual symmetric inverse monoid. It is shown how a representation of S by (full) selfmaps of a set X leads to dual pairs of representations in Ix and Ix*, and how a number of known representations arise as one or the other of these pairs. Conditions on S are described which ensure that representations of S preserve such infima or suprema as exist in the natural order of S. The categorical treatment allows the construction, from standard functors, of representations of S in certain other inverse algebras (that is, inverse monoids in which all finite infima exist). The paper concludes by distinguishing two subclasses of inverse algebras on the basis of their embedding properties.
