We define asymptotically p-flat and innerly asymptotically p-flat sets in Banach spaces in terms of uniform weak* Kadec–Klee asymptotic smoothness, and use these concepts to characterize weakly compactly generated (Asplund) spaces that are c0(ω1)-generated or ℓp(ω1)-generated, where p∈(1,∞). In particular, we show that every subspace of c0(ω1) is c0(ω1)-generated and every subspace of ℓp(ω1) is ℓp(ω1)-generated for every p∈(1,∞). As a byproduct of the technology of projectional resolutions of the identity we get an alternative proof of Rosenthal’s theorem on fixing c0(ω1).

We establish a characterization of certain trees of polygons similar to that of n-gon-trees given by Chao and Li.

Let ${\mathcal{L}}=-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}+{\mathcal{V}}$ be a Schrödinger operator on $\mathbb{R}^{n},n\geq 3$, where ${\mathcal{V}}$ is a potential satisfying an appropriate reverse Hölder inequality. In this paper, we prove the boundedness of the Riesz transforms and the Littlewood–Paley square function associated with Schrödinger operators ${\mathcal{L}}$ in some new function spaces, such as new weighted Bounded Mean Oscillation (BMO) and weighted Lipschitz spaces, associated with ${\mathcal{L}}$. Our results extend certain well-known results.

We continue the study of operators from an Archimedean vector lattice E into a cofinal sublattice H which have the property that there is λ > 0 such that if x ∈ E, h ∈ H and |x|≤|h|, then |Tx| ≤ λ|h|. The collection Z(E|H) of all of those operators forms an algebra under composition. We investigate the relationship between the properties of having an identity, being Abelin and being semi-simple for such-algebras, culminating in a proof that they are equivalent if H is Dedekind complete. We also study various for such an operator T, showing that, apart from 0, its spectrum relative to Z(E|H) is the same as that of T|H relative to Z(H) and that of T relative to ℒ(E) (Provided E is a Banach lattice and H is closed).

Let $\{f_{n}\}_{n\geq 1}$ be an infinite iterated function system on $[0,1]$ and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$ be its attractor. Then, for any $x\in \unicode[STIX]{x1D6EC}$, it corresponds to a sequence of integers $\{a_{n}(x)\}_{n\geq 1}$, called the digit sequence of $x$, in the sense that

In modelling joint probability distributions it is often desirable to incorporate standard marginal distributions and match a set of key observed mixed moments. At the same time it may also be prudent to avoid additional unwarranted assumptions. The problem is to find the least ordered distribution that respects the prescribed constraints. In this paper we will construct a suitable joint probability distribution by finding the checkerboard copula of maximum entropy that allows us to incorporate the appropriate marginal distributions and match the nominated set of observed moments.

A Symplectic lattice L is a free Z-module of finite rank endowed with a non-degenerate alternating bilinear form. Thus we have a bilinear mapping Φ of L × L into the domain of integers Z; we donote Φ (α, β) by α · β (where α, β ∈ L). Then α2 = 0 and α·β = −β·α.

A probabilistic convergence structure assigns a probability that a given filter converges to a given element of the space. The role of the t-norm (triangle norm) in the study of regularity of probabilistic convergence spaces is investigated. Given a probabilistic convergence space, there exists a finest T-regular space which is coarser than the given space, and is referred to as the ‘T-regular modification’. Moreover, for each probabilistic convergence space, there is a sequence of spaces, indexed by nonnegative ordinals, whose first term is the given space and whose last term is its T-regular modification. The T-regular modification is illustrated in the example involving ‘convergence with probability λ’ for several t-norms. Suitable function space structures in terms of a given t-norm are also considered.

Given two topological algebra sheaves, we seek that their tensor product be an (algebra) sheaf of the same type. We further study the latter sheaf in connection with the set of morphisms which are defined on it. As an application, we finally consider fundamental notions and results related to algebras of holomorphic functions in the framework of topological algebra sheaves.

We obtain an effective analytic formula, with explicit constants, for the number of distinct irreducible factors of a polynomial $f \in \mathbb {Z}[x]$ . We use an explicit version of Mertens’ theorem for number fields to estimate a related sum over rational primes. For a given $f \in \mathbb {Z}[x]$ , our result yields a finite list of primes that certifies the number of distinct irreducible factors of f.

Duchon (1967, 1969) and Duchon and Kluvánek (1967) considered the problems of the existence of countably additive tensor products for vector measures. Duchon and Kluvánek (1967) showed that a countably additive product with respect to the inductive tensor topology always exists while Kluvánek (1970) presented an example which showed that this was not the case for the projective tensor topology. Kluvánek considered yet another tensor product topology which is stronger than the inductive topology but weaker than the projective tensor topology and showed that a countably additive product for two vector measures always exists for this particular tensor topology, see Kluvánek (1973). He has conjectured that this topology is the strongest tensor topology (given by a cross norm) which always admits products for any two arbitrary vector measures. In this note we use an example of Kluvánek (1974) to show that this conjecture is indeed true when one of the factors in the tensor product is l2 and the other factor is metrizable. The construction used also clarifies a conjecture made by Swartz (to appear) concerning products of Hilbert space valued measures.

This is the text and invited lecture given at the 20th Annual Meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society in Perth, May 1976.

In this talk I want to give a survey of some of the areas of research in ordinary differential equations. In view of the vastness of the field, the limited thime available and may own inadequacies I will restrict attention to problems in which I have been involved in some way, although I won't be speaking about my own work. Even with this restriction it will be necessary to be somewhat superficial. However, in spite of all these drawbacks, I thought it would assist communication among mathematicians simply to have an idea of what other people are doing. Since this is my purpose I will not mention the quite mild smoothness hypotheses in the statements of some results.

Extension theorems are proved for smooth functions on a coherent real analytic space for which local defining functions exist which are finitely determined in the sense of J. Mather, (1968), and for smooth functions invariant under the action of a compact lie group G. thus providing the main step in the proof that smooth infinitesimal stability implies smooth stability in the appropriate categories. In addition the remaining step for the category of CxG-manifolds of finite orbit type is filled in.

We characterize rings whose multiplicative subsemigroups containing 0 and the additive inverse of each element are subrings. In addition we consider commutative rings for which every non-constant multiplicative endormorphism that preserves additive inverses is a ring endomorphism, and we show that they belong to one of three easily-described classes of rings.

The bichromaticity β(B) of a bipartite graph B has been defined as the maximum order of a complete bipartite graph onto which B is homomorphic. This number was previously determined for trees and even cycles. It is now shown that for a lattice-graph Pm × Pm the cartesian product of two paths, the bichromaticity is 2 + {mn/2}.

The purpose of this paper is to prove strong type inequalities with pairs of related weights for commutators of one-sided singular integrals (given by a Calderón-Zygmund kernel with support in (-∞, 0)) and the one-sided discrete square function. The estimate given by C. Segovia and J. L. Torrea is improved for these one-sided operators giving a wider class of weights for which the inequality holds.

Motivated by work of Garsia and Lamperti we consider null-recurrent renewal sequences with a regularly varying tail and seek information about their rate of convergence to zero. The main result shows that such sequences subject to a monotonicity condition obey a limit law whatever the value of the exponent α is, 0 < α < 1. This monotonicity property is seen to hold for a large class of renewal sequences, the so-called Kaluza sequences. This class includes moment sequences, and therefore includes the sequences generated by reversible Markov chains. Several subsidiary results are proved.

The generalised factorial function (z; K)! has been defined by Smith White and Buchwald [1] in terms of an infinite product which converges very slowly, about 105 terms being required for four figure accuracy if |z| = 10. A method is given for the computation of (z; k)! for 0 < |z|≦ 10 to four figure accuracy.

We characterize the classes of graphs of order n whose automorphism group either contains or coincides with the 2-Sylow subgroup of the symmetric group Sn.
