We use the Freiman theorem in arithmetic combinatorics to show that if the Fourier transform of certain measures satisfies sufficiently bad estimates, then the support of the measure possesses an additive structure. The result is then discussed in light of the Falconer distance problem.

In this paper the Toeplitz determinant of order s ≧ 1 generated by the rational function , with , and , is evaluated exactly for all values of s ≧ m, as , where in with and , thus proving Szegö's formula for the function fm, n(z).

By forming the rational approximation of the generating function the formula is then extended to enabling the evaluation of the limit of Toeplitz determinants generated by certain classes of complex valued functions.

We prove general Dwork-type congruences for constant terms attached to tuples of Laurent polynomials. We apply this result to establishing arithmetic and p-adic analytic properties of functions originating from polynomial solutions modulo $p^s$ of hypergeometric and Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov (KZ) equations, solutions which come as coefficients of master polynomials and whose coefficients are integers. As an application, we show that the simplest example of a p-adic KZ connection has an invariant line subbundle while its complex analog has no nontrivial subbundles due to the irreducibility of its monodromy representation.

Two generalized mean value theorems, for functions with values in a linear locally convex topological space, are proved, as consequences of two theorems for real valued functions of real variable.

Suppose that the function $f$ is analytic in the open unit disk $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$ in the complex plane. For each $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}>0$ a function $f^{[\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}]}$ is defined as the Hadamard product of $f$ with a certain power function. The function $f^{[\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}]}$ compares with the fractional derivative of $f$ of order $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}$. Suppose that $f^{[\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}]}$ has a limit at some point $z_{0}$ on the boundary of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5}$. Then $w_{0}=\lim _{z\rightarrow z_{0}}f(z)$ exists. Suppose that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}$ is analytic in $f(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E5})$ and at $w_{0}$. We show that if $g=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}(f)$ then $g^{[\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}]}$ has a limit at $z_{0}$.

A closed irreducible 3-manifold M is topologically rigid if any homotopy equivalent irreducible 3-manifold is homeomorphic to M. A construction is given which produces infinitely many non-Haken topologically rigid 3-manifolds

We show that rings for which every non-constant multiplicative endomorphism is additive are trivial or power rings (that is, rings R such that R = R2 and x2 = 0 = x+x for all x ∈ R) and that if R is a power ring for which every multiplicative endomorphism is additive, then End (R) is a zero semigroup or a semilattice according to how the product is defined.

A subgroup A of a group G is said to be complemented in G if G contains a subgroup C such that . Every subgroup C with its property is called a complement of A in G. Various results have been obtained about groups in which each member of a given set of subgroups is complemented. Some of these results state, roughly speaking, that the existence of complements of all members of a given set of subgroups implies that all members of larger set are also complements. In this paper we derive another theorem of this kind.

Let p be a class of finite soluble groups which is closed under epimorphic images and let g be a saturated formation. Then if G is a group of minimal order belonging to p but not to g, F(G), the Fitting subgroup of G, is the unique minimal normal subgroup of G. It is to groups with this property that the following proposition is applicable.

It is known that for a given and a given strictly stationary sequence of random variables, the p-norms of the partial sums are bounded if and only if the sequence consists of successive differences from another strictly stationary sequence with finite p-norm. Here this is generalized to random fields, and the assumption of stationarity is relaxed. The index is included.

The concept of loosely Markov dynamical systems is introduced. We show that for these systems the recurrence rates and pointwise dimensions coincide. The systems generated by hyperbolic exponential maps, arbitrary rational functions of the Riemann sphere, and measurable dynamical systems generated by infinite conformal iterated function systems are all checked to be loosely Markov.

Finite innately transitive permutation groups include all finite quasiprimitive and primitive permutation groups. In this paper, results in the theory of quasiprimitive and primitive groups are generalised to innately transitive groups, and in particular, we extend results of Praeger and Shalev. Thus we show that innately transitive groups possess parameter bounds which are similar to those for primitive groups. We also classify the innately transitive types of quotient actions of innately transitive groups.

In this paper, we examine the rate of convergence of moving block bootstrap (MBB) approximations to the distributions of normalized sample quantiles based on strongly mixing observations. Under suitable smoothness and regularity conditions on the one-dimensional marginal distribution function, the rate of convergence of the MBB approximations to distributions of centered and scaled sample quantiles is of order O(n−1¼ log logn).

Band sums of associative rings were introduced by Weissglass in 1973. The main theorem claims that the support of every Artinian band sum of rings is finite. This result is analogous to the well-known theorem on Artinian semigroup rings.

In Lee (submitted), the GW-integral (the generalized Riemann integral using Wiener measure) is defined. The object of this article is to define stochastic integral in the set up given in Lee (submitted). We also investigate the connection between the stochastic integral defined with the Legesgue counter part, the Paley-Wiener-Zygmund integral in Paley, Weiner and Zygmund (1933). Applications of the stochastic integral will be explained elsewhere.

If R is a 2-group of symplectic type with exponent 4, then R is isomorphic to the extraspecial group , or to the central product 4 o 21+2n of a cyclic group of order 4 and an extraspecial group, with central subgroups of order 2 amalgamated. This paper gives an explicit description of a projective representation of the group A of automorphisms of R centralizing Z(R), obtained from a faithful representation of R of degree 2n. The 2-cocycle associated with this projective representation takes values which are powers of −1 if R is isomorphic to and powers of otherwise. This explicit description of a projective representation is useful for computing character values or computing with central extensions of A. Such central extensions arise naturally in Aschbacher's classification of the subgroups of classical groups.

In Flaminio and Montagna [‘An algebraic approach to states on MV-algebras’, in: Fuzzy Logic 2, Proc. 5th EUSFLAT Conference, Ostrava, 11–14 September 2007 (ed. V. Novák) (Universitas Ostraviensis, Ostrava, 2007), Vol. II, pp. 201–206; ‘MV-algebras with internal states and probabilistic fuzzy logic’, Internat. J. Approx. Reason.50 (2009), 138–152], the authors introduced MV-algebras with an internal state, called state MV-algebras. (The letters MV stand for multi-valued.) In Di Nola and Dvurečenskij [‘State-morphism MV-algebras’, Ann. Pure Appl. Logic161 (2009), 161–173], a stronger version of state MV-algebras, called state-morphism MV-algebras, was defined. In this paper, we present the Loomis–Sikorski theorem for σ-complete MV-algebras with a σ-complete state-morphism-operator, showing that every such MV-algebra is aσ-homomorphic image of a tribe of functions with an internal state induced by a function where all the MV-operations are defined by points.

In this paper we study groups with Černikov conjugacy classes which are nilpotent-by-Černikov groups, giving full characterizations of them and applying the results obtained to some related areas.

By using row convex tableaux, we study the section rings of Bott–Samelson varieties of type A. We obtain flat deformations and standard monomial type bases of the section rings. In a separate section, we investigate a three-dimensional Bott–Samelson variety in detail and compute its Hilbert polynomial and toric degenerations.

Consider a (real) projective plane which is topologically locally flatly embedded in S4. It is known that it always admits a 2-disk bundle neighborhood, whose boundary is homeomorphic to the quaternion space Q, the total space of the nonorientable S1-bundle over RP2 with Euler number ± 2, with fundamental group isomorphic to the quaternion group of order eight. Conversely let f: Q → S4 be an arbitrary locally flat topological embedding. Then we show that the closure of each connected component of S4 − f(Q) is always homeomorphic to the exterior of a topologically locally flatly embedded projective plane in S4. We also show that, for a large class of embedded projective planes in S4, a pair of exteriors of such embedded projective planes is always realized as the closures of the connected components of S4 − f(Q) for some locally flat topological embedding f: Q → S4.
