A proof-theoretic characterization of the primitive recursive functions is the Σ1-definable functions in IΣ1 as is shown in Mints [4], Parsons [5], and [8].

Then what is a proof-theoretic characterization of Grzegorzyk's hierarchy? First we discuss a related previous work. In Clote and Takeuti [2], we introduced a theory TAC that corresponds to the computational complexity class AC. TAC has a very weak form of induction. We assign a rank to a proof in TAC in the following way. The rank of a proof P in TAC is the nesting number of inductions used in P. Then TACi is defined to be the subtheory of TAC whose proof has a rank ≤ i. We proved that TACi corresponds to the class ACi.

In this paper we introduce a theory IepΣ1 which is equivalent to IΣ1. Then we define the rank of a proof in IepΣ1 as the nesting number of inductions in the proof and prove that the proofs with rank ≤ i correspond to Grzegorcyk's hierarchy for i > 0.

We also prove that the system that has proofs with rank 0 is actually equivalent to I Δ0. These facts are interesting since it is proved in [10] that the theory isomorphic to TAC∘ by RSUV isomorphism is a conservative extension of I Δo. Therefore there is some analogy between the class AC and the primitive recursive functions.

In this paper we investigate the closure of certain filters under different definitions of diagonal intersection. The space of partitions over which filters concern us is Qκ(λ), the set of partitions of λ into fewer than κ pieces, invented by Henle and Zwicker [4] in the spirit of Pκ(λ). Various notions of normality for filters over Qκ(λ) have been introduced in [4] and [7]. Our objective is to find a notion of normality in terms of a tractable diagonal intersection which also in some sense reflects the construction of a partition. Extending the parallels between Pκ(λ) and Qκ(λ) we define two diagonal intersections, Δ1 and Δ2, under which the club filter is closed.

Let us consider countable languages L containing a unary predicate symbol P and L− =L\{P}. We also assume that L is relational. Then for any L-structure M, N = PM can naturally be considered as an L−-substructure of M. The main object of this paper will be the study of the following question: Under what condition does M have to be ℵ0-categorical. ℵ1-categorical, or stable if N is?

Hodges and Pillay [6] proved that if M is a countable symmetric extension of N and T = Th(M) is minimal over P (they said that T is one-cardinal over P), then the total categoricity of N implies that of M. This is a solution to a problem in Ahlbrandt and Ziegler [1]. The condition that “M is a symmetric extension of N” is an interpretation of the condition “every relation on N definable in M is definable within N”. We shall give several interpretations of this phrase: They are the Ø-reduction property, the reduction property, the strong reduction property, and the uniform reduction property (Definition 1). Under the assumptions, we study the question proposed above.

In §3 we treat the case that M is countable and show that if T is minimal over P and M has the strong reduction property over N, then M is ℵ0-categorical if N is (Theorem 5). This is a slight extension of the result of Hodges and Pillay mentioned above. (If M is countable and saturated, then the strong reduction property is equivalent to the condition that M will be symmetric over N if we add a finite number of appropriate constants.) A counterexample to this theorem has been obtained by Hrushovski in the case that only the Ø-reduction property is assumed. We also give a stronger result: If M has the Ø-reduction property over N and is ℵ0-categorical, M\N is infinite, and N is algebraically closed, then there is an expansion M* of M such that M* is not ℵo-categorical but M* still has the Ø-reduction property over N (Theorem 6). Moreover, we give an example such that M has the uniform reduction property over N. Th(M*) is minimal over P. N is ℵ0-categorical but M is not.

In [14] J. Hirschfeld established the close connection of models of the true AE sentences of Peano Arithmetic and homomorphic images of the semiring of recursive functions. This fragment of Arithmetic includes most of the familiar results of classical number theory. There are two nice ways that such models appear in the isols. One way was introduced by A. Nerode in [20] and is referred to in the literature as Nerode Semirings. The other way is called a tame model. It is very similar to a Nerode Semiring and was introduced in [6]. The model theoretic properties of Nerode Semirings and tame models have been widely studied by T. G. McLaughlin ([16], [17], and [18]).

In this paper we introduce a new variety of tame model called a torre model. It has as a generator an infinite regressive isol with a nice structural property relative to recursively enumerable sets and their extensions to the isols. What is then obtained is a nonstandard model in the isols of the fragment of Peano Arithmetic with the following property: Let T be a torre model. Let f be any recursive function, and let fΛ be its extension to the isols. If there is an isol A with fΛ(A) ϵ T, then there is also an isol B ϵ T with fΛ(B) = fΛ(A).

One of the basic theorems in universal algebra is Birkhoff's variety theorem: the smallest equationally axiomatizable class containing a class K of algebras coincides with the class obtained by taking homomorphic images of subalgebras of direct products of elements of K. G. Grätzer asked whether the variety theorem is equivalent to the Axiom of Choice. In 1980, two of the present authors proved that Birkhoff's theorem can already be derived in ZF. Surprisingly, the Axiom of Foundation plays a crucial role here: we show that Birkhoff's theorem cannot be derived in ZF + AC \{Foundation}, even if we add Foundation for Finite Sets. We also prove that the variety theorem is equivalent to a purely set-theoretical statement, the Collection Principle. This principle is independent of ZF\{Foundation}. The second part of the paper deals with further connections between axioms of ZF-set theory and theorems of universal algebra.

In this paper we study nonmultidimensional superstable theories T, possibly in an uncountable language, and develop some techniques permitting the generalisation of certain results from the finite rank (and/or countable language) context to the general case.

We prove, among other things, the following: there is a set A0 of parameters, which has cardinality at most ∣T∣, and in the finite-dimensional case is finite, such that over any B ⊇ A0 there is a locally atomic model. One of the consequences of this is that if C is the monster model of T, φ(x) is a formula over A0, φC ⊇ X and (X, φC) satisfies the Tarski-Vaught condition after adding names for A0, then there is an elementary substructure M of C containing A0 such that φM = X. Applications to the spectrum problem will appear in [Ch-P].

In fact, all the components of the machinery we develop are already present in the general theory. One such component involves a stratification of the regular types of T using a generalized notion of weakly minimal formula. This appears in [Sh, Chapter V and the proof of IX.2.4] and also in [P2]. A second component involves definable groups which arise as ‘binding” groups. The existence of such groups, under certain hypotheses on the behavior of nonorthogonality, is due to Hrushovski [Hr1], and our use of them to help obtain “j-constructible” models is similar to their use in [Bu-Sh].

In this paper we establish the following theorems.

Theorem A. Let T be a complete first-order theory which is uncountable, Then:

(i) I(∣T∣, T) ≥ ℵ0

(ii) If T is not unidimensional, then for any λ ≥ ∣T∣, I(λ, T) ≥ ℵ0.

Theorem B. Let T be superstable, not totally transcendental and nonmultidimensional. Let θ(x) be a formula of least R∞ rank which does not have Morley rank, and let p be any stationary completion of θ which also fails to have Morley rank. Then p is regular and locally modular.

In 1962 Jan Mycielski proposed a very general notion of interpretability [M1]. This led to the question whether a given theory could be interpreted in the disjoint union of two theories, without being interpretable in any of them. He argued that in such a case it would be presumably simpler to study each of these theories separately, and hence conjectured that this situation can never occur for any of the well-known theories of mathematics. This conjecture has now been verified for the following theories (see [MPS], [P], [S1, 2]): ELO (endless, i.e., without maximal element, linear order), Th(〈ℚ, ≤〉), Th(〈ω, ≤〉) and all sequential theories (those which can code finite sequences of elements of their models). The latter include PA, ZF, GB and Th(〈ω,+,·〉). In view of these confirmations it became ever more plausible that the conjecture is valid also for RCF (real closed fields), i.e., for Th(〈ℝ,≤,+,·,0,1〉). In the present paper we show that Mycielski's conjecture is valid for a class of theories which includes RCF and OF (ordered fields).

We consider only theories with equality and without function symbols. Interpretations will be meant local, multidimensional, and with parameters, as defined in [M1], [M2] and surveyed in [MPS] (for a recent definition see also [S2]). We shall write T0 ≪ T1 to say that T0 is interpretable in T1 (or that T1 interprets T0), and this will mean that for every theorem α of T0 there is an interpretation of α in T1.

In this paper we define and study conditional problems and their degrees. The main result is that the class of conditional degrees is a lattice extending the ordinary Turing degrees and it is dense. These properties are not shared by ordinary Turing degrees. We show that the class of conditional many-one degrees is a distributive lattice. We also consider properties of semidecidable problems and their degrees, which are analogous to r.e. sets and degrees.

Ramsey's Theorem states that if P is a partition of [ω]k into finitely many partition classes, then there exists an infinite set of natural numbers which is homogeneous for P. We consider the degrees of unsolvability and arithmetical definability properties of infinite homogeneous sets for recursive partitions. We give Jockusch's proof of Seetapun's recent theorem that for all recursive partitions of [ω]2 into finitely many pieces, there exists an infinite homogeneous set A such that ∅′ ≰TA. Two technical extensions of this result are given, establishing arithmetical bounds for such a set A. Applications to reverse mathematics and introreducible sets are discussed.

Elementary (first-order) and nonelementary (set-theoretic) aspects of the largest bisimulation are considered with a view toward analyzing operational semantics from the perspective of predicate logic. The notion of a bisimulation is employed in two distinct ways: (i) as an extensional notion of equivalence on programs (or processes) generalizing input/output equivalence (at a cost exceeding over certain transition predicates computable in log space), and (ii) as a tool for analyzing the dependence of transitions on data (which can be shown to be elementary or nonelementary, depending on the formulation of the transitions).

We present a game semantics for Linear Logic, in which formulas denote games and proofs denote winning strategies. We show that our semantics yields a categorical model of Linear Logic and prove full completeness for Multiplicative Linear Logic with the MIX rule: every winning strategy is the denotation of a unique cut-free proof net. A key role is played by the notion of history-free strategy; strong connections are made between history-free strategies and the Geometry of Interaction. Our semantics incorporates a natural notion of polarity, leading to a refined treatment of the additives. We make comparisons with related work by Joyal, Blass, et al.

A dilator is a functor on which preserves direct limits and pullbacks. Let τ < ΩE ≔ min{ξ > Ω: ξ = ωξ}. Then τ has a unique “term”-representation in Ω. λξη.ωξ + η and countable ordinals called the constituents of τ. Let δ < Ω and K(τ) be the set of the constituents of τ. Let β = max K(τ). Let [β] be an occurrence of β in τ such that τ[β] = τ. Let be the fixed point-free version of the binary Aczel-Buchholz-Feferman-function (which is defined explicitly in the text below) which generates the Bachman-hierarchy of ordinals. It is shown by elementary calculations that is a dilator for every γ > max{β.δ.ω}.

Embeddings into initial segments of (the lattice of ideals of r.e. degrees) are relevant for the investigation of decidability of (fragments of) the theory of (with constant-symbols denoting principal ideals). Interest in this investigation stems from open problems concerning decidability of fragments of the theory of R (the usl of r.e. degrees) and embeddings into R. Ambos-Spies and Lerman established comprehensive nonembeddability [AS/LR1] and embeddability [AS/LR2] conditions, but their complementarity is open. (For background on embeddings and decidability consult Lerman [LR1] and Lerman and Shore [LR/SH].) The first systematic investigation of embeddings into is in Calhoun [CL], where the existence of uniform bounds, in the case of embeddings into , on the number of “join traces” arising with nondistributive lattices is shown to remove “obstructions” to lattice-embeddings into R (such as typified in the nonembeddable lattice S8, see [LA/SR], [AS/LR1/). The analysis to follow extends this, by showing that it also removes the “obstruction” to lattice-embeddings into initial segments of R, arising with Lachlan's M5, which embeds into R, but not into every nontrivial initial segment R[0, a], by a result of Downey [DW]. The techniques are Lachlan's [LA], as adapted in Lerman's “pinball machine model” [LR1, LR2], combined with Fejer's “meet-trick” [FJ] as used by Downey [DW] in the proof that every distributive lattice is embeddable into every nontrivial initial segment of r.e. degrees R[0, a], a > 0. We present a sufficient condition, “allowing evasion” [Definition 4.2] for lattice embeddability into every [0, a], a > 0.

If * is a binary partial function which happens to be a group law on some infinite subset of some model of a stable theory, then this subset can be embedded into a definable group such that * becomes the group operation.

In this paper we show that if there is a weakly normal ideal on κ then for each fails. This greatly improves a theorem of C. A. Johnson.

Let L be a first order language. If M is an L-structure, let LM be the expansion of L obtained by adding constants for the elements of M.

Definition. A type is definable if and only if for any L-formula , there is an LM-formula so that for all iff M ⊨ dθ(¯). The formula dθ is called the definition of θ.

Definable types play a central role in stability theory and have also proven useful in the study of models of arithmetic. We also remark that it is well known and easy to see that for M ≺ N, the property that every M-type realized in N is definable is equivalent to N being a conservative extension of M, where

Definition. If M ≺ N, we say that N is a conservative extension of M if for any n and any LN -definable S ⊂ Nn, S ∩ Mn is LM-definable in M.

Van den Dries [Dl] studied definable types over real closed fields and proved the following result.

0.1 (van den Dries), (i) Every type over (R, +, -,0,1) is definable.

(ii) Let F and K be real closed fields and F ⊂ K. Then, the following are equivalent:

(a) Every element of K that is bounded in absolute value by an element of F is infinitely close (in the sense of F) to an element of F.

(b) K is a conservative extension of F.

By an “inverse iteration” of Sacks forcing over a model of V = L, we produce a model in which the degrees of constructibility of nonconstructible reals have order type

The Scott height of a structure gives ordinal measure of the inhomogeneity of the structure. The Scott specturm of a collection of structures is the set of Scott heights of structures in the collection. We will recall the precise definitions of these and related concepts in the next section. The reader thoroughly unfamiliar with these notions may want to skip ahead before reading the rest of this Introduction.

In [11] it is shown that every model of the complete theory of (, +, 1), where, as usual, denotes the integers, is ℵ0-homogeneous, and therefore has Scott height at most ω. On the other hand, a footnote in [1] gives a model of the theory of (, +) which is not ℵ0-homogeneous, while in [11] such a model is described which can be expanded to a model of the theory of (, +, 1). However, since it is also true that any model of the theory of (, +) is isomorphic to a subgroup, in fact a pure subgroup, of a direct sum of and a torsion-free divisible group, it is easy to see that any such model must be ≡∞ω to a model of cardinality at most and so must have Scott height below .

After having recalled the relevant material about Scott heights in §2, we will review the situation for torsion abelian groups in §3. In §4 we shall produce torsion-free abelian groups of high Scott height. It is the proof of Theorem 15 that was our primary motivation in writing this paper.

We know from [H1], [H2] that in a stable theory, given a nontrivial locally modular regular type q, one can define a group with generic domination equivalent to q, and that the dependence relation on q can be analyzed in terms of this group. In a stable one-based theory, every regular type is locally modular; hence, this result holds for every nontrivial regular type. We show here that, in fact, in a stable one-based theory, a similar type of construction can be done without the assumption of regularity. More precisely, we show that for any type q, the nontrivial part of q can be analyzed by generics of groups and that any nontrivial relation can be described by affine relations (Theorem A).

This construction is then used to answer a question about homogeneity in pairs of models which is still open in the case of arbitrary stable theories (Theorem C).
