I wish to apologize to the readers of this Journal and above all to my friend Professor Fordyce for an unfair statement in my review of his Catullus (JRS LIII, 246). In his comment on poem 66 he does not make it entirely clear that the Callimachean poem of the Oxyrhyncus papyrus is not the version translated by Catullus : but the fact that two versions existed and that Catullus translated the later version as incorporated in the Aitia is, of course, stated in the introductory comment on the poem. I very much regret that what ought to have been no more than a passing reference to an ambiguity arising from compression was turned by me into a charge of serious omission.
